A Budweiser Ad Campaign? Better Grab a Drink.

Nearly one month into 2012 and we have our first IG video, and it wasn’t what he promised. Instead of History of Boring, we get another I Rate the 80s, oh joyous days… This time he’s going to talk about the Bud Bowl, a series of Budweiser commercials that showcased a football game between bottles of Budweiser and Bud Light always set during the Super Bowl. I feel he’s cheating as the campaign started in 1989 and thus feels more like a 90s thing. Granted, the TMNT cereal was first released in 1990 so his qualification must be “if it existed in the 80s in some form, it counts”. Personally, I just think he doesn’t give a crap. Grab a beer, I know I’m going to need it, and let’s go. 0:05 - 0:16: Oh hey, he changed his table to something better. Instead of the clusterfuck of random toys, it’s a bunch of Budweiser & Bud Light bottles and assorted party foods. This is appealing to the eyes and doesn’t invoke the idea that you care more for what people see on your desk than what they hear from your mouth. Did I just say something positive about IG? Urgh, it feels gross. “…string of commercials in the 1980s” For all of one year. Only the first Bud Bowl was in the 80s, the rest were in the 90s. As I said before. 0:16 - 1:02: We get our modern stock footage intended to “set the year”. Seriously, what’s the point of this? The quality is far too high to be set in the 80s or 90s, why does he show it? History time, grab a drink! As he explains when each commercial aired during the game, he plays a video clip in the corner. When he mentions half-time, the clip covers his face and he swats it away. Uhh, was that intended to be annoying? He brings up how the Bud Bowl commercials were really popular, following with clinking two bottles together… causing an explosion. Ugh. For someone that hates Michael Bay, he sure takes a lot of cues from him. Look, if you’re going to make something explode, SET IT UP! It has to be a punchline, you can’t just do it randomly and expect people to laugh. 1:02 - 1:40: He quickly summarizes the second Bud Bowl, then a random joke where he says Budweiser was on fire, setting the bottle he was holding on fire. Just because you can do effects doesn’t mean they’re mandatory. Then a quick summary of Bud Bowl 3. Honestly, this video is just boring so far. Nothing immensely stupid yet… 1:41 - 2:08: He moves onto Bud Bowl IV and says things are “getting weird”. He notes that instead of watching bottles play, it’s about a guy looking for a ticket. Watching the commercial and checking Wikipedia, this year was when they introduced a contest involving a ticket. The commercials were about this guy looking for his ticket to hopefully win. Yes it’s stupid we didn’t get to see the stop-motion bottles but they were trying something different. I can respect that. Of course, IG turns on his horrendously fake anger, claims that even 20 years later he’s still pissed. Dude, it’s a commercial for beer, no reason to flip your table (which is what he does to showcase how “irate” he is… grrrrr?) “I hope you die you jackass” Our host ladies & gentlemen, wishing death on commercial characters from 20 years ago. 2:09 - 2:30: When talking about “fan complaints”, he shows a TV getting smashed with a sledgehammer. … Why was that needed? Why all this stock footage? I’m so confused! Onto Bud Bowl V, he mentions it’s in CGI, has celebrity announcers and Joe Nameth appears. Come on, what about Corbin Benson? He was on L.A. Law! Though these days people know him on Psych. Say, that’s a good idea, I should watch that instead! *gets pushed back* Focus Daniel. He also lists off various products shown in the commercials. There’s something I’m going to bring up at the end about all this. 2:30 - 3:07: “Bud Bowl VI marked the last of the Bud Bowls” No it wasn‘t! I’m looking at Wikipedia and it says there’s a Bud Bowl VII and VIII. In fact, I checked the blogs “Strictly Commercials” and “mental_floss” (no relation to Brentalfloss) and they both confirm the existence of VII and VIII. Though from what they say, they were just single commercials with little focus on the game. He summarizes the game, bringing up how Bud Light won due to outside interference (a hand grabs a Budweiser bottle). This gives us a gag with a giant hand grabbing one of IG’s bottles. *yawns* Snooze-inducing. I’m switching back to soda, this beer isn’t helping me. IG goes on to say they “retired” the Bud Bowl (read above, they had two more years) and mentions a “new campaign” and the Budweiser Frogs. Say, you know which mascot would be more appropriate for this show? Spuds MacKenzie, he had more time in the 80s. We get to the rating. “Alright sports fans” Pffffft, oh please! Those are less likely to watch you than 80s fans and gamers! He enjoyed them, and we get another Nostalgic Overload. Whatever… Also, explain how it wouldn’t appeal to today’s audience. From what I’m watching, the commercials look timeless and can be aired in any year. The video ends with IG hoping they bring it back one day, asking for a light, causing an obvious CGI one to shine on him, he corrects himself saying he wanted a Bud Light, then gets crushed by an image of a giant bottle. Can’t really get mad at the ending, the whole video was just dull. Other than stupidly random moments and fake anger, the entire video was uneventful. He didn’t add anything funny or insightful to the commercials, just described what happened. The jokes were just there for no reason. A lot of parts seemed like Bores showing he can do effects. We get it, they aren’t really that special. What I don’t get is that his audience is mostly 10-12 year old kids, and he talks about commercials for a drink they aren’t allowed to have. Wait a sec… Chris himself was a kid when these aired! If he was born in 1978, he would have turned 21 in 1999, one year after the final Bud Bowl. Yes I know the Super Bowl is a family event and he could have seen them there, but the way he described the products earlier… I’m probably just over thinking it again. I guess I didn’t need all this whiskey, I’ll store it until the next main IG episode, or a Neo video that really pisses me off. Blogs mentioned earlier found here: http://strictlycommercials.blogspot.com/2011/02/brief-history-of-bud-bowls.html http://blogs.static.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/22310.html That’s all for now.

    P. S. "If he was born in 1978, he would have turned 21 in 1998"

    Don't you mean 1999?

  4. I'm actually eager to see the match. Though I hope it's better show-wise that last year's Superbowl. (Christina Aguilera's butchering of the Star-Sprangled Banner and the Black Eyed Peas' performance who was the beginning of the E.N.D for them. (It's too easy to make fun of them for me.))

  5. Yeah, this one was just kinda meh. If he hadn't shoehorned in a bunch of lame special effect jokes and actually provided some analysis of the commercials (Perhaps with humor actually derived from said analysis) it might not have been halfway decent.

  6. This is one of his better videos, though that isn't saying much. At least he put in more effort on the table design, which really shouldn't be complimented on, but its Bores, what can you do? I think if he expanded on his opinions more and gave a much better, much more concise "final verdict" than just the generic "Nostalgia Overload" and whatnot, one day, he might just create a near-watchable video.

  7. So... LadyBuggin777 was right about what video was next? Maybe she actually is Bores's mother?

  8. I'm surprised at the mild reaction to this one to be honest. I don't think I've seen him do anything this phoned in since he (seemingly) stopped doing movie 'reviews'.

  10. You know, I never understand his dumbass ratings. If he gave Madballs a Nostalgic Mediocre because they aren't widely popular, why did he still gave the TMNT cereal a Nostalgia Overload? Nobody I know remembered that cereal and yet it receives an Overload? At least people do remember Madballs because they did expand the franchise but a cereal that nobody remembers get a better rating than that? I don't get it!

    1. Maybe it cames with how the general audience came to remember the series. Not the subject persented, but the series overall. After all, when he made the He-Man toy series, the show was popular (but popular doesn't mean good) and gave the toys a Nostalgia Overload but when he made the M.U.S.C.L.E toys, he likes the toys yet he gave it a Nostalgic mediocre because we didn't have the anime which proves Bores doesn't know about the differences between eastern and western culture. Yeah it's a dumb rating system (and it's just my speculation) but coming from the guy who says that Goonies 2 sucks because the first is not released in America (if we removed the Play-Choice 10) hates hard games for flimsy reasons, hates ZAMN for more dumbass reasons and overall is a hypocrite, it is not that far-fetched.

    ReplyDelete

    1. That depends how long it takes for Bores to release another video besides contests and updates. Bores just released his Bud Bowl video on Friday, so at least give Bores a couple weeks before asking BatDan about the next redux recap.

  14. See, not being a football fan, I'd never heard of these before and they could be potentially entertaining to learn about, especially since I think stop motion is really damn cool.

However, this barely qualifies as informative. Look, I'm sure they were really damn cool commercials, and maybe I'm out of touch about this sort of thing, but do people REALLY complain to companies about commercials unless they do something offensive? "What? How dare these commercials feature a man trying to get a ticket! I must voice my complaints immediately!"

Bores makes it sound like these damn commercials were a really big, important part of his childhood. Dude, they were friggin' commercials. I watched plenty of commercials as a kid, though I can barely remember most of them. See, I cared about the thirty-minute toy commercials rather than the 30-second ones.

    1. I seriously doubt people complained, they may have been disappointed or underwhelmed, but it wasn't worth complaining to Anheuser-Busch. It wasn't like that Groupon commercial with Timothy Hutton that made light of Tibet.

That's a good point. Unless it was related to toys, food, or TV shows, I doubt kids cared that much about commercials.
Plus, these were beer commercials, I doubt Anheuser-Busch was concerned with marketing to kids. Sure, kids can see them but they won't think "I need a Bud right now", they'll think "Wow this is really cool!"

  15. I took a look at the Bud Bowl 7 commercial that Mental_floss linked on his blog. In a way, I'm kind of glad Bores didn't cover that since he probably would have unleashed more of his forced anger on that one. I personally find that one even worse than the one about the guy chasing his ticket because it was only one 60 second spot, and the only footage that they did use of the actual game were all recycled from the older Bud Bowl games. I haven't been able to see Bud Bowl 8, but I'm sure that's no different.

    1. Good point, the less forced anger the better. Still, he could have at least acknowledged they existed, it's bad form to leave out big details.

  16. There are some Super Bowl ads I enjoy (I'm looking forward to the Ferris Bueller ad with Matthew Broderick more than the actual game), but really? I mean, the way you talk about this video sounds like the Bud Bowl ads were the least bad Irate The '80s video, but you also say there's not much of a point. It's like that whole bit about the Ninja Turtles cereal-it's boring. (By the way, I did enjoy having Pokémon cereal, being born in the 1990s, but I'm not willing to search a box and try it when it's 12 years past its prime; especially not now that I have acid reflux disease.)

  17. At 1:47 in the video, a disclaimer reads: "No purchase necessary. Void in MD, OH, TX and where prohibited. Must be of legal drinking age. Entries must be received by 2/7/92."

Since Boring Man is from outside Cleveland, being in Ohio, that means if he was of drinking age in 1992, his entry to the contest with Bud Bowl IV would be null and void. You knew how bad it was when he throws the table in disgust, much like in his "Sonic Colors" review. By the way, I'm not a football fan either, and here in Canada, we have the CFL Grey Cup every November. The only reason Boring Man made this was to appeal to adults who remember these commercials.

    1. Took a stroll over to Screwattack's site and yes, Plushies are being sold. Does this bother me?

      No

      Will I buy one?

      No

The way I see it, aside from the plushies all the rest of the official AVGN merch is shirts, hats and combo packs. Nothing wrong with that. Hell I believe Retsupurae even got into the shirt selling thing (And their sub count is lower then IG's!).

The difference with Chris is that none of his work has any passion whatsoever. He frequently gets his information wrong and continues making an ass of himself. Chris's schedule slip is the on scale of VGcats, the difference being he cobbles together a half-assed video once in a while to remind people he still exists.

This is enough reason for him to sell shirts and DVDs of his crappy works.

I have more respect for Mr.Rolfe and the Retsu crew. Saw what you will about the latest AVGN videos, but he was able to maintain a steady schedule for a good time. His work still manages to entertain, (though I'll admit the new stuff doesn't have the punch that it used to have) and its clear the man has passion for what he does. Not too sure if the Retsu crew have the same enthusiasm but they've made me laugh alot more then Bores ever has so free pass on them.

Of course the question is? Am I a hypocrite because I look down on Bores for releasing unnecessary merch around his shitty shows, while AVGN and Retsupuare have done the same thing with their more respectable shows?

      I guess so

      Do I care?

      No

As for "selling out"? The fact you can still watch AVGN videos without buying any of the DVDs kinda tramples that notion. Least in my eyes.

      Delete
    2. Selling out is to exchange the integrity and morality to become more wealthy and successful. Just because someone sells their face on something does no make him a sell out.

Bores is a sell out for lacking effort in his online content, especially for his video's at GotGame. He even admitted to not putting an appropriate amount of time play a game for a review. Furthermore, Bores' products are of poor quality. That design of his T-shirt was just some brushes rushed in Photoshop. He also whores out his products to his fans because obviously Bores' products are not selling enough otherwise, he would have no need for such contests. Those contests are just a blatant attempt at advertising. Bores is perhaps the biggest sell out I ever heard.

James Rolfe selling a couple plush dolls..pfffttt..so what?

      Delete
    3. At least James is selling real and worthy merchandise. Bores can only think of selling mousepads.

      Delete
  24. Wow the double standards you people have are astounding.
I can just imagine the uproar if Bores released plushies of his characters.

Chris may be lazy, he may be a hack, and he may be talentless, but James has the greedy sell out category locked up.

atleast while James was pandering to his fans for money, Bores actually gave back to his few fans.

      @Shaolin Dave:
I might buy one, too (plushy skeletons wtf!). Too bad he won't do it, since that would actually be a clever business descision.

      Delete
    5. Ozz, everything looks like a double-standard if you aren't possessed of an analytical mind that's capable of looking past mere surface similarities.

Sure, James has merch too, but the chief difference between he and Bores is that if you know anything about James' history, it's pretty damned clear that he continued with the AVGN series after realizing he'd stumbled onto something with the first video, not for the purpose of generating merchandise, but because it allowed him to flex his creativity and entertain people. To put a fine point on that, the dude is gearing up to give fans what they've been waiting for for years in the form of an AVGN movie. Folks donated cash to the tune of something like $250,000 just to see him fulfill his dream, and every time he steps in front of the camera to update folks on his progress, he's the most humble, thankful dude you'll ever see. He can't stop thanking his fans for the opportunity they've helped give him. So for him to offer up merchandise doesn't come off as a cynical cash-grab, and most importantly, he doesn't beat his fans over the head with it. The dude has given us so much quality entertainment over the years that if he wants to make a little money doing it, then great. He deserves it.

Bores, on the other hand, clearly latched on to the formula that James popularized, not because he has any artistic integrity or a desire to entertain people, but because he saw in that formula the opportunity to earn what he imagined would be easy money doing it. The poor quality and sporadic schedule of his videos speaks to that, as does the fact that he releases tons of sub-par merchandise that he repeatedly flogs in his videos. Nothing he's done leaves me with the impression that he genuinely cares about entertaining his fans, and I wouldn't be surprised to find out that he only sees them as dollar signs to exploit. That's what makes him a sell-out, Ozz. Not the mere existence of his merchandise, but that it's so obviously the impetus for what he does. It's cynical as all hell, and while I obviously can't speak for any of these guys, I just can't respect that.

    3. Keep him coming, we know from his reactions to insults that he is a lot more bothered by us then we are of him

  34. I hate commercials anyway. They're just so forced. "I command you to laugh! Now buy our shit!"

    1. Why? Sometimes commercials are gewnuinely funny, you can just ignore the fact that it's trying to persuade you.

    2. I could, but I'm kind of cynical.

You're right that sometimes commercials have been funny. I haven't been impressed by a Super Bowl ad in years though, and they're the biggest budget ads.

They're goal is to sell a product (obviously) and that means appealing to a wide audience and THAT means (usually) a nice, safe and generic style humor. I don't blame them for doing what they are meant to, but I don't enjoy them either.

    3. ...Uh, sorry if I sound like a douche. If you like them that's OK with me.

    4. It's fine. I haven't even watched the commercials, what with me not being from the US and all.

    5. In today's Politically Correct world, you won't find too many of them. In the old days, that is not always the case. Check out some Wilkins Coffee commercials made by Jim Henson if you haven't seen them yet.
