Generations of Sonic Speed By IG's Slow Schedule

If I said “I didn’t see this game coming”, I would be lying. Given how he’s talked about Unleashed and Colors, it was only a matter of time until he got to Sonic Generations. If he released this review one day later, it would have been seven months since it came out.

What’s that? Generations was praised by critics AND loved by fans? And it’s unlikely Bores will add anything new long after the game has been released? Ha, you guys have read my mind. I don’t see Bores saying anything new half a year after this game came out, but as usual I’ll recap the nonsense.

0:06 - 0:28: IG announces the review, then wonders if it’s the one “Sonic fans have been waiting for”.
After once again reminding us Sonic games have sucked and that he didn’t like Unleashed. We get it! You didn’t like Sonic Unleashed. Personally, I don’t think you have the right to judge it considering you barely played it. At least tell me you’re familiar with Sonic 06, that one has far more problems than Unleashed.
“All I gotta say, it’s been a long time coming” What about Sonic Colors? That was pretty good, you even said you liked it.

0:29 - 1:08: He mentions the levels are comprised in two styles, the classic side-scrolling style and the “zoom through the level” style. Don’t you mean 3D? That’s… the big difference. Classic Sonic is in 2D while Modern Sonic is in 3D with some 2D elements. That’s the point, to showcase the major differences between the Sonic of old and new.

Oh this is hilarious. IG mentions back in the day he played Sonic 1-3 so much he “pretty much memorized the levels”. Bullshit. You’ve done so much to prove you’re not a gamer that the idea of you playing Genesis back in the day is laughable. You thought Super Mario World was an NES game. Also, if you played Sonic 2 so much, why did you bash the flying stage in Unleashed? It was kind of the same thing as Sky Chase Zone.

He goes on about how the levels got “major upgrades” or something. I’m sorry, I just don’t believe that he played Sonic 1-3 that much.
He also says the graphics are “breath-taking” and if you have a 3D TV then you’re in for a treat. Honestly, I’m not surprised Bores doesn’t treat 3D as a stupid gimmick. Given his love of special effects, having them pop out must be like cocaine to him.
This prompts a joke where he’s playing with 3D glasses and a couple of stock electric balls fly out at him. He remarks it “feels so dimensional” whatever that means.

1:09 - 1:31: He briefly talks about the story and says it’s not really needed, but knows Sega loves putting their stories in there. You clearly never played Sonic 06, you don’t know how bad it can get. Generations is Coppola compared to 06 being Uwe Boll.
He attempts to skip the cut scenes, but he can’t, prompting one of his forced growls where he slacks his jaw. Stop that! You don’t look angry doing that, you look like you have problems.

EDIT: It's been confirmed to me multiple times that you can skip cutscenes. So Bores was angry for... no reason at all. This also furthers confirms he didn't actually play the game, but watched Cyberman65's playthrough. This is getting worse and worse....

1:32 - 2:06: IG says he’s reached the part where he tears it apart, but can’t find anything to rant on. Surely you can find something, too many bonus levels for you, easy mode too hard? Nah, this shows some progress.
But he does go back to his ranting on Sega taking a long time to release a good Sonic game, brings up Unleashed again (god damn it, enough! This is worse than Epic Yarn) and not only wants the old Sonic games done in this style, but wants old NES games done the same way. They have! NES titles have been remade for years! Bionic Commando, all three NES Final Fantasy titles, the first Fire Emblem, Metroid, all three Super Mario Bros games, Kirby’s Adventure, they’re just not all on HD consoles.

His final verdict is for Sonic fans to check it out and it’s a nostalgic overload (wrong series Bores). That’s it.

Despite my rants, that was fairly harmless. A boring video of IG gushing about a game, as per usual when it comes to IG Neo these days. But seriously, I still find it hard to believe he played the classic Sonic games that much. Especially his belief that the only thing that matters about Sonic is “speed”.
I will compliment him for not bringing up that he played it at E3.

I do wonder when he’ll put up his Ninja Gaiden 3 review to YouTube. The backlash to that will be glorious.

EDIT: blueluigi brought up a VERY interesting detail about this video. When viewed in HD (click the little HD button in the bottom part of the video), a watermark saying "Cyberman65" can be seen. Through a YouTube search, there is a user called Cyberman65 with  a playthrough of Sonic Generations. He's also a YouTube partner as well.
http://www.youtube.com/user/Cyberman65

Wow, he can't even get his own footage. The fact he didn't credit Cyberman65 is an even greater crime.

EDIT: Karl Reid has brought some new info.
He left a post on GotGame's Facebook page, informing  them of the stolen footage using the screenshot left by Mario Augusto Puga Valera. GotGame says they'll "take care of it" and now under his video, a message saying "Green Hill Zone footage courtesy of Youtuber Cyberman65" with a link not to his channel, but to his first video of the playthrough.
Okay, no. He didn't just steal Green Hill Zone, he stole ALL the footage from him. That watermark is in every shot of gameplay.
You can't just add that and expect this problem to go away. You don't know if Bores asked him for permission (he likely didn't).
How desperate are you for traffic that you will ignore everything he does? You let him get away with reviews of games he's only played for an hour, and videos where he blows up the office of a video game publisher. What the hell guys?

EDIT: Cyberman65 responds!
He messaged me back saying "thanks for telling me" and that he didn't know about this. Proving Bores did NOT ask for permission.
He also posted a bulletin saying thanks to everyone for informing him, his late response was due to him being away from his computer, and that he is NOT happy about this. However, an hour prior to posting the bulletin, IG sent him a PM about it. Sounds like someone is scrambling for damage control. He also notes this is exactly why he uses watermarks on his videos. Good advice!

EDIT: GotGame has changed "Green Hill Zone footage" to "Game footage". Dolly it up all you want guys, it still doesn't change the fact Bores stole from him.

  2. Still though, he's managed to release a Irate Gamer Episode, a movie review, and a Neo review all in one month. Granted the latter to were really short, but still this hasn't happened in a long time.

    1. I have Sonic Rush Adventure for the DS. It's the game for the people that complain about Sonic straying too far from it roots.

Then again, they'd complain about how it has a story, and bash the few 3D segments.

    2. people still complained about Sonic Adventure 2 Battle having the 2 other stages for tails/robotnic(I refuse to call him eggman >:-( ) and knuckles/... the bat.. idr her name. amd having the chaos.. which were cute! and awesome! and so cool and I loved them! sending them away made me want to cry :(

But yeah I agree a game should stay somewhat close to its roots, but Sonic has done a good job of mixing things up at the same time! At least in my opinion.

    3. I loved the Tails/Robotnic (I like that name more too) levels. I don't like the Knuckles/Rouge the Bat ones as much though. Still, Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are awesome games. I'll probably never be good enough to 100% them.

  6. can i play devil's advocate?

i know Bores review of Ninja Gaiden 3 was terrible but, i saw Armake21's video of gaming decline, and he brought up a good point.

that Ninja Gaiden 3 was supposed to be more in the style of the original NES games and hence why they toned down the difficulty, and because the 1st 2 Ninja Gaidens were too hard to be enjoyed.

    1. That's no excuse. If they were afraid that the game was too hard for some people to enjoy, then they could have added difficulty settings. That way, they could appease the mainstream audience without alienating the fanbase.

    2. The original NES games are some of the most difficult video games ever made.

    3. @Shaolin Dave:

Exactly. If one thinks that the previous games in the new Ninja Gaiden series were "too hard to be enjoyed", you ain't the nothing yet. NES-era Ninja Gaiden is downright sadistic, especially the 3rd entry whose difficulty was cranked up to eleven thanks to the developer being sure that we guys in the west can handle it.

That's so ironic coming from Bores, the same guy who put a pointless stupid storyline in his reviews.

    ReplyDelete
  12. It was relatively harmless, EXCEPT for the bullshit about how the story isn't needed after constantly bleating on about how so many NES games don't explain the story on-screen. This is just like him criticising Sonic 4 for not being different enough, months after saying Sonic Unleashed was too different and Sega should stop trying to vary the gameplay.

  13. When I was watching this video with the HD mode (the SD mode crops out the small text) then if you look over to the down-right corner, you'll see a very small watermark that reads Cyberman65. I did a Youtube search, and sure enough, there does exist a Youtube user named Cyberman65 who uploaded a playthrough of Sonic Generations on his Youtube account, and it used the SAME WATERMARK that's used in Bores video.

Yup, that's right, it seems that Bores, once again, stole gameplay footage from another user for this review. That further shows how lazy he is AND that he's still a thief.

    4. For some reason, Bores stealing footage kinda reminds me of "Third Rate Gamer", where on some of his videos he "steals" AVGN footage and comments over it.

      Delete
    5. Ok, the plot thickens..

I posted on GotGame's facebook(because apparently they do not have an email address or any official way of contacting them) and pointed out the watermark and lack of attribution using the screenshot Mario posted. They then told me they would look into it, then 2 minutes later they added some text underneath the review- "Green Hill Zone footage courtesy of Youtuber Cyberman65." They linked to a URL I gave them, which was directly into a video by cyberman65, not his channel. They then seem to have deleted my post from their Facebook wall.

I'm considering going back and telling them that in fact all the game footage(the cutscenes too) is ripped off, but given their unprofessional attitude and failure to identify the scale of the rip of, they really don't seem to care what Chris does.

Cyberman26 remains offline from YouTube and Twitter as well so we will have to wait until he comes online again to get the full picture here.

      Delete
    6. I just checked, your wall post is still there.
But the fact they only mentioned Green Hill Zone and not ALL the footage shows they don't care what Bores does. Only that he brings in traffic. Sad...

      Delete
    7. Yes, you're right, it's still there, whoops. Anyway, cyberma65 just posted a bulletin on his youtube:

"Thanks a lot guys for telling me about the deal with the Irategamer taking my videos. Was away from the computer yesterday. Not happy about this, but he PMed me about it and stuff about an hour ago. That's why you have watermarks on your videos."

So wonder where it goes from here. If I was him I'd be pissed right now- he's 100% right about why he uses watermarks, it shows that he is well aware people will take his footage. You'd just think Chris could find footage without a watermark, or make some attempt to crop it out. He is just shamelessly lazy.

      Delete
    8. .... or he can actually play the game himself and get his own damn footage.

I created an easter egg in one of my games that was the names of me and the two other creators written on the floor. That's all it was suppose to be, an easter egg. It eventually became the only proof that we were the real creators when some certain asshats decided to simply modify the text file for the credits and claim it as their own.

  18. I'm afraid Chris Bores (and Gotgame, for that matter) represents everything wrong with new media: poor research, low quality, arrogance, manipulative editing, style-over-substance approach, general irresponsibility and, most gravely, intellectual dishonesty.

Judging from Cyberman65's opinion, those trends are here to stay. We're going from the "blogosphere" to both the "tabloidsphere" and the "ripoffsphere".

Seriosly, the Web needs urgent regulation addressing that vices.

  20. You know, the "no skipping cutscenes" bit really only seems like a valid complaint when you're playing a game that has no extra lives/continue feature. For example, several RPGs boot you back to the title screen when you lose a fight, forcing you to start from your last save. Many modern RPGs have cutscenes prior to major boss battles, which is where one expects to die a lot. As such, it seems reasonable to expect to be able to skip lengthy cutscenes prior to such an encounter. Sonic Generations, on the other hand, has both extra lives AND infinite continues, so even if you can't skip the cutscenes (a dubious claim already, considering the source), the only reason one would be forced to rewatch one would be if they quit the game after watching it before defeating the boss. Seems to me like Bores just sifted through the barrel of generic complaints in another sad attempt to prove that he's a gamer.

But you see in my first link that they did at first only give credit for the Green hill zone footage and not all footage. 3. Funnily enough, his NG3 review is flawed for almost the complete opposite reason. He actually likes the game for how easy it is to pick up and play.

And therein lies our problem. NG3 has been criticized for nerfing the difficulty level from past NG games, as well as toning down and altering numerous other franchise hallmarks. Chris outright admitted to not playing any other NG games, and throughout the review it's blatantly clear he doesn't know a thing about the franchise or it's fanbase.

As well as that, we also have the typical Chris Bores reviewing style; his pretentious attitude, comparisons to other games that are irrelevant, getting game titles wrong, giving praise and criticism for all the wrong reasons and empty remarks that don't tell us anything about the game.

  33. I've given up on reading the comments of Chris' video. God, every single thing I hate in Youtube comments are compressed into a cornucopia of horror. It's so hard to look at...

By the way, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gO87OGMQZHQ&feature=g-all-u I think we all need a good laugh.

Well, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised, considering that his fans are idiot 10 year olds.

Also, are you going to do the E.T. recap soon? Because I don't think there'll be any E3 videos until late next month.

    1. Seems like another case of a somewhat amusing critic of crappy youtubers that got too big for his/her britches, leading to level the same sort of criticism at respectable internet celebrities. I'm not saying it's impossible to poke fun at guys like James Rolfe and Doug Walker without coming off as a total dick, but it requires a lot of talent, sort of like a good celebrity roast.

So basically, you can talk as much shit about Bores all you fucking want, but when it comes to so called "good" reviewers like Doug, James and Noah you are taking shit too far.

"I'm not saying it's impossible to poke fun at guys like James Rolfe and Doug Walker without coming off as a total dick"

      Yes, yes you are.

    3. See, these are the sorts of arguments I usually see from people attempting to riff these reviewers, but are unable to find the same flaws they find in IG's videos and aren't clever enough to pick apart something of higher caliber. Instead they, like you seem to have, devolve into accusations of "Nuh uh!" and "No, you are!"

      Delete
    4. Oh, yeah, it takes quite a lot of high caliber riffing to poke fun at an unfunny and offensive Elmo video or the comedy genius that is "building brown bricks with Minecrap".

Irate Gamer, you can make fun of him all you want, but this ... you simply aren't sophisticated enough to riff on this.

  36. So Ubisoft held their press conference today. Who wants to bet that, assuming they didn't bar GotGame from entering for last year's stunt, Bores makes some sort of "tough guy" statement like "I guess they learned their lesson last year!"?

  40. I feel bad for GotGame, honestly. It's some unpopular site that only makes profit because they have the Irate Gamer. Without him, the site would get no traffic whatsoever; that's why they try to cover all of Chris' mistakes. They can't afford to lose him.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Quite right. Although, with Chris declining in popularity, he is becoming a useless resource.

      Delete
    2. I don't they could get some solid traffic by giving some recent up to date reports from E3 but they keep sending a guy who takes 2 months to produce any content. Some of the stuff announced at E3 is done to get a bit of publicity before its upcoming release, what good is it for Chris to talk about seeing it when its out on the shelves.

  43. I'm quite amazed at how low this is, even for him. Also, how lazy can Bores be? I mean, this is like a robber entering your house and tripping with the rug, falling flat on his ass over a table. Was it really that hard to erase that watermark?

    ReplyDelete
  44. HA! Bores has lost over 11,000 subscribers in the last 30 days. Looks like even his fans are getting sick of him.

    ReplyDelete
  45. To be fair, several Youtube channels have lost an inordinate number of subscribers over the past month, possibly due to them terminating several inactive accounts.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Correct. This is why I stopped reporting on his sub loss. It's happening to everyone now.

  46. Hmm... well it's been a couple days since e3 started, and still nothing from Bores. I'm wondering if he's either running really slow on the e3 videos, or Gotgame didn't take him this time around.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I would not expect "coverage" from Bores for a week from now at the earliest. Last year he only got one video out during the week of E3. The rest of the videos came out about a week later, and that is only counting the videos on GotGame. Really, we all know Bores is just there for the games instead of doing his job as a press member.

  50. E3 update from my Facebook informant (about a day ago).
He mentioned games that looked good to him.

His list includes (using official names and not the ones he typed) Star Wars 1313, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, South Park: The Stick of Truth, New Super Mario Bros. U, and Skylanders Giants.
He also bragged about getting a Spyro variant. Note: Unless they're Legendary or Dark characters, Skylanders variants are exactly the same as the regular versions when playing the game. The only difference is the figure itself is shiny or clear.

He also mentioned that he couldn't edit anything because he's been "too busy". I'd question how he would edit something, but I imagine he has a laptop. If he can afford an iPad 2 (*points to RoboCop video*), he can afford a laptop.

Nothing about revenge on Ubisoft or any of the press conferences.

    1. What? No The Last of Us, Watch Dogs or Beyond: Two Souls? Or any other game that got talked about a lot? And instead he's interested in Skylanders Giants? At least he mentioned Star Wars 1313 and Injustice. I'm personally not really hyped about a new Mario game, to be honest (unless it's a new Super Mario RPG, or something like that).

Oh, and he called the games "star wars 1313, dc comics injustice, lego batman 2, south park, super mario u and skylanders giants"

    2. Bores has this ability to block out games people want to hear about at E3 further diminishing his credibility as a gaming journalist (if GotGame sends him to E3 for their site, then that is what his role is). Bores doesn't get this and thinks it's a personal holiday instead of work and just raves about games only he is interested in.

E3 is not like the Super Bowl which are numbered for each season. E3 is an abbreviation for Electronic Entertainment Expo with each of the three words begin with the same letter, hence the name E3.

  61. Seven months? Even when I reviewed this game for my college's newspaper in January, it was because the school was closed for Christmas vacation and I bought the game with my Christmas money. But I digress. Sonic Generations is the perfect game for Sonic's 20th anniversary, as opposed to that bug-ridden mess of a game we got for his 15th anniversary. I played the Wii version of Unleashed, and it is passable. It's not as bad as others would have you believe. What I think made it a bit better than the PS3/360 version is that the flying stages and adventure segments were made into simple point-and-click sections; and the motion controls made it easier to use some of the Werehog's special moves. I really loved Colors and Generations. And the story in Sonic Generations is much better than Bores' Pixel Demon bit. I won't spoil it for those who haven't played the game; but you will be surprised.
