Has Something Finally Happened?

Holy shit! He posted a new video!
*checks* It's another contest. *eye-twitch* For his poster.
*flips table* This is ridiculous...

Remember how he said 2013 would be his year? Ha! We're in March now and he's only put out 8 videos. Only two of which I'll classify as new content. No, I'm not counting his idiotic history revision.

He mentioned that the next two videos are an I Rate the 80s and a retro review. He also goes into some crap about History of Video Games taking a long time and how the games are rare and expensive. Hang on, isn't the next episode about the Atari 2600? What's exactly so rare and expensive about that? Unless he's looking for Chase the Chuck Wagon, and I'm fairly certain he will never afford a copy of that.

Here's some stuff from my Facebook informant.

A fan asked about the side content in Skylanders Giants and what he thought about it.
IG told him he "doesn't care for sidequests". You do realize that an "in-depth" review means you go into as many details as you can right? That should include side content, otherwise it sounds like you added "in-depth" to make the video sound more important than it really is, and that the title would be a big fat lie.
He also said that the sidequests in Arkham City were "meh". Did we play the same Arkham City? That game had awesome sidequests. The Mad Hatter's tea party, finding Nora Fries, finding Azrael, confronting Hush. Did you even play the entire game?
Granted, Bores is a fraud gamer that doesn't understand how sidequests can help a game. Like Jon and Arin, he just seems to rush through as quick as possible instead of taking time to enjoy it. By the way, the Grumps have gone way downhill for a while now.

A while ago, someone asked about Action 52. IG told him that "the game doesn't have enough material". BULL! SHIT! That game is nothing BUT material! It's 52 terrible games in one! How is that "not enough"? You're lying to get out of reviewing it aren't you? Because you don't have the patience to play 52 games.

There is other stuff, but I feel those were the parts worth mentioning.

Bores better keep a close eye on his Blip account. The site is planning to do a quality cleaning and multiple channels will be taken down for not meeting their guidelines. Blip hasn't made it clear what the guidelines are yet, but everyone is watching their ass to avoid elimination.

That's all for now. Pfft, year of Irate Gamer. Yeah right.

  1. IG doesnt care for sidequests? Why not? They add replay value to a game, encouraging people to keep coming back in order to find every little secret there is and earn a 100% completion score.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is a short game due to it only have four dungeons, but it makes up for this with the HUGE abundance of sidequests. Not to mention, the only way to see the entire staff roll, with all cutscenes, is to collect each and every mask in the game.
Several Kirby games, like Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, will only reward you with the "good" ending when you find everything possible in every level.
Seriously, sidequests and bonus/additional content are a GOOD thing. But then again, IG is not a gamer, so, naturally, he wouldn't know this.

    2. And as Batdan mentioned, the sidequests in Arkham City are excellent. Oh man, did it feel good to finally put the Riddler in his place.

Actually, speaking of Arkham City, one detail confuses me about the Mad Hatter Quest. Was there an impostor Alfred who told Batman about the fake cure? 'Cause I doubt that Mr.Wayne's most loyal butler would set him up like that.

      Delete
    3. Not to mention the Fallout series. that series had a lot of sidequests?

    4. @J-Dog:

Mad Hatter has a short appearance after Batman rescues Vicky Vale, so I think he already hypnotised him so that his mind could make up a reason to fall into MH's trap.

    5. WTF?!?! Irate Gamer says the Arkham City sidequests are 'meh'?! They were awesome! I enjoyed The Riddler's side-mission the most. I also fondly remember the Mad Hatter's mission, Hush was also dark and creepy in a fun way and the Azrael side mission was really clever.

      @ J-Dog

Yeah, I also had a hard time thinking how did Mad Hatter came up with that fake cure for Batman and have an imposter call him up. XD

      Delete
    6. @J-dog @Sovereign64

It stands to reason that the Mad Hatter might have known about Joker infecting Batman with that disease and used Batman's desperation for a cure to create a hallucination that would lure Batman into his trap. Alfred calling Batman and telling him the location didn't actually happen but was created by Batman's hope for a cure to suddenly be available to him.

Game Grumps going down hill lately? I mean, I know they've had a some bad episodes...but I still find Jon and Arin fun to watch. The Castlevania recently were good. I would love to hear what you have to say about the Grumps.

    1. Besides, when were they ever about 100% runs?

Not to mention that they usually don't play games that actually have lots of secrets. The only one I can think of was Mega Man 7, and here they DID get everything.

      Delete
    2. The Grumps getting stale? I dunno what Grumps you're watching BatDan, but I think they're funnier than ever... and it looks like others here agree with me :p

To be fair, they definitely have their ups and downs, but I wouldn't say they're done already... They're just getting started, if anything.

      Delete
    3. I didn't really like their Snowboard Kids 2 video, since that was a game I loved since my childhood and both Jon and Arin seemed to just jump in and do poorly rather than do a couple of runs beforehand to get used to the controls and gameplay (and focus on beating the computers, they get 3rd-4th just about every race) before broadcasting several races live.

      Delete
    4. Maybe batdan watched naughtybear episode 1. The problem with John and Arin is that they spend way too much time just talking about themselves and not enough time you know... talking about the game. Bonus points when they express feelings about game design that totally useful (i.e expressing hatred for subtitles then complaining that they have no Idea what's going on because they're too busy talking over everything). I still watch their videos because they're funny but I can see where some of the frustration comes from.

      Delete
    5. Well, that's always been a big problem I've had with LPs in general: People take over important stuff then act like they're totally justified in complaining about not knowing what to do, or that the plot doesn't make sense. For example, I'm a fan of Awesome Video Games, but the end of their Asura's Wrath playthrough was a total wall banger for me.

      Delete
    6. @Justin De Lucia:

The modus operandi of Game Grumps is playing games unprepared to capture their raw first impressions, so the viewers can see their genuine surprise/amazement/frustration.

(This doesn't work with every game, though.)

      Delete
  4. He doesn't like sidequests? I personally find them to be fun in between or after the main quests in most games I've played that offer them. So, an Irate the 80s and a retro review are next? I'm personally still finding it odd that he'll spend thousands on old games and systems he doesn't really like; but he deems the G1 Transformers "too expensive". Most people have said you can just get a few figures and use the catalogs for the rest; and the Chinese KO figures from Zhong Jin could also work. I also get the feeling he won't touch Action 52 because of it being covered by you-know-who. Cartoon cheetahs or pixel demons would probably jump out of the TV if he tried. Then again, that hasn't stopped him from covering games a certain other person has before. I'm personally expecting Godzilla, given the giant HAL-bot. See you around, Dan.

Speaking of sidequest, I never played Batman: Arkham City before since I didn't own a PS3 or Xbox. But come on, Chris. Side quest are awesome. Side quest rewards you items. Also, in some games, they are required to get a 100% completion.
On the side note, should I talk about KY?

  9. Not to take Chris's side or anything, but how many of Action 52's issues are redundant from game to game? How many times can you say "choppy animation, bad hit detection, bad sprite design, overabundance of space shooters" before it gets tiring? It's like when I got late into the Twilight series. Even I realized how often I was complaining about the same old shit.

    2. Maybe, but if he does commit to it he'd have to do the entire thing or viewers would feel gypped. And by the end it'd probably be obvious how threadbare the idea is, at least at his skill level.

Besides, we've seen how well Bores handles deadlines and "epic" projects like his storyline and HoVG. If he were to take it on it'd probably good for the purposes of this blog, but I still say it'd run out of gas long before it was over.

    4. There's a few flaws of the Action 52 games that he's never covered before, like jump/attack buttons being the opposite of the norm, and only being able to control jumps mid-air. Few games outside of Action 52 are designed that way.

Some of the complaints he's made before would be more relevant here. For example, breaking his five-second record from Ninja Turtles.

...BTW, before AVGN I'd never heard anyone tear into TMNT so much. I know some people prefer the later games, I've never heard of anyone who outright hated the first. I actually like it, despite it being a little unforgiving and unpolished. Am I alone?

      Delete
    5. I'm with ya Dave, it's definitely not perfect, but it's definitely better than people make it out to be.

      Delete
    6. I had quite a lot of fun withe NES TMNT. I found the dam level really easy (you can switch characters at any time... so there's no problems as long you don't let the health bar drop to 0). My problem with the game was the maze like overworld that essentially ensured I never got past the hint "Find the rope so you can access the rooftops".

Like wise there are similar trends in RTS gaming. When someone asks whats the worst RTS you've ever played, cue someone saying "Dawn of war" or "C&C3" instead of actual shit like "times in conflict" or "Star wars force commander". The reality is that most Gamers aren't used to playing actual shitty games and generally haven't bought shovelware due to things like "Quality control". They thus then have to take the closest substitute to a shitty game, a mediocre game.

      Delete
    7. The first TMNT was OK, but I still have trouble with it. When I first played it, I was more used to the beat-em-ups (the NES port of the Arcade Game, The Manhattan Project, Turtles in Time); so I was caught off guard by its difficulty. I can rarely get through the water stage without at least one of my turtles dying. Still, even though it caused grief for many people, it still sold 4 million copies; making it one of the bestselling non-Nintendo made NES games. I'm willing to bet that it was because it came out in 1989, when the Ninja Turtle craze was really it its apex.

    8. @Kill Ultra: That happens all the time. Ask an American otaku what the worst anime she ever saw was and she'd say "Bleach" or "Gundam Seed Destiny" or "Wedding Peach" or whatever. They'll rarely mention truly awful affairs like Garzey's Wing or Cosprayers or Pilot Candidate (and those are just the ones I've heard of). Japanese otaku are likely more knowledgeable.

Personally, I still have bad memories of playing Legacy of Goku.

      Delete
    9. @Patrick
Exactly, I'm just pointing out that when most people start a trend they're not qualified for (i.e reviewing classic games), its easy to spot the people who don't really know the whole culture based on their inability to tell what is a good feature and what is a bad feature. Its a shame so many people want to jump a on bandwagon instead of preparing and planning first.

It should be noted that there aren't any real Anime critics (at least none I'm aware of) and as a result anime has gotten a backlash since people don't know what to watch. Mercy on all who have watched Garzey's Wing, Cosprayers, Candidate for godess or Dog Catalogue... especially for the people who have watched the last two. Did anyone know there is transformers manga called transformers Kiss players with sexualized little girls? I haven't read it and I will never look at the transformers franchise the same way ever again.

P.S I totally remember the episode where Goku punched squirrels for exp and died to fucking crabs. Level grinding should never be a game.

And people say that "Dawn of War" is one of the worst RTS? I had a blast with that series!

(True, later expansions of the first game got kinda wonky in the balance department thanks to too many Eldar fans amongst the developers, but that's why we have the awesome DoWPro mod)

    12. "several Japanese fans were themselves openly decrying Kiss Players, fearing that American fans would think that this was somehow accepted as "normal" in Japan. Yeah Doresh the kids are not kids and in fact are old enough to drive a car, but the artist wanted to make them look like fucking kids. Bonus points for even offending the native culture. Now who's willing to scanlate this crap? XD

    14. I seem to have a fairly high threshold to be offended by sexual matters, so my opinion was never as strong as that of others. I heard that the radio show was better, but that was never translated, so I have no way of knowing.

Japan is generally rather bad at handling the Transformers. It's nearly always aimed at kids, but the Japanese shows aim even lower. Beast Wars was dubbed into an over-the-top, toilet humor gag series and Transformers Prime also has some questionable decisions.

      Delete
    15. Yes. I've heard of Kiss Players. Energon and Headmasters are also pretty bad, but at least they have camp value. Kiss Players is just nasty. I have heard of them trying to turn Beast Wars and Transformers Prime into comedies, despite both shows being some of the best examples of how some adaptations analyze how the franchise is at heart, a robotic civil war. They also went the other way and tried to turn Transformers Animated into a prequel for the live-action movies. Also, I have heard of Cosprayers and Garzey's Wing; largely through TV Tropes' So Bad It's Horrible index. So far, the worst I've willingly seen is Code Geass R2, largely because I found it to be a lackluster follow-up to a good first season; though Goro Taniguchi at least has the fact that Bandai wouldn't let him do the whole series at once in his defense. I still find R2's pacing uneven and the bulk of its story decisions nonsensical. I do admit that many people also tend to bash series because they're popular. One last thing: Legacy of Goku was iffy, but it's not the worst DBZ game I've played. That honor goes to Ultimate Battle 22.

  18. U know I still cant get over the fact that Bores said he had a gf...that has children. That woman must really be into 30 year old man children...who stalk Toys R us for Skylander toys...0.0

    1. I can't help but wonder what's even going on there. I mean, there are so many questions. How'd they meet? Does she know what he does? Do the kids know what he does? Does she know about his relationship with his mom? What kind of role model is he on that poor woman's kids? I realize that seems like prying... but c'mon, you've gotta be at least a little curious.

    2. I'd say its a chode maneuver but then again, there its entirely plausible for Chris Bores to be a horrible internet citizen but a nice guy in real life. The whole negative publicity thing seems way too well planned, I mean no else has had this long of a feud with AVGN.

  21. Wait so IG isnt copying the AVGN?! Is he in fear that by reviewing Action 52 he will be compared to the AVGN again?

    1. IG has copied the AVGN in the past. He hasn't done it too much lately. If anything it appears Chris Bores wants to associated with the AVGN as much as possible seeing how he reviewed die hard and silver surfer. I could see Irate Gamer reviewing action 52... I can't see him making a review longer than 20 minutes though.
