E3 2013 Part 2: Is He Given Any Direction At All?

Last time, in Irate Gamer’s E3 coverage.
Bores gushes over Batman or things that feel like Batman.
He was incapable of understanding why people cheered at Sony’s press conference.
He was inexplicably excited for Halo and Dark Souls 2.
He brushed off Nintendo like it was nothing.

And now, the continuation.

Video #9: Skylanders Swap Force E3 2013 - Epic Interview Part 1 (Review, Preview)
June 22nd 2013
Exclusive to YouTube.

And here’s the Skylanders. No surprise there.
Epic? Pffffft.
Wait, Part 1? *checks time* 12 MINUTES?!
Hell no. I’m not watching this. It’s probably just a bunch of generic questions that amount to nothing new. No. No. No. No. No. NO!

Video #10: Skylanders Swap Force E3 2013 - Epic Interview Part 2 (Kaos’s Mom, TarClops)

Once again, no.
I will point out the grammar error in the title. If a word ends with “s”, you merely add an apostrophe by itself. Otherwise you get stuff like “Chris’s”. What’s sad is that this isn’t the first time he’s done this. In that really old “Loyal Order of Chris” video on his Y2B2006 account, there’s a sign that says “Loyal Order of Chris’s”. One would think that they would teach him the correct way considering his name ends with “s”.

I… I just don’t care anymore. The Skylanders obsession is getting tedious.

Video #11: Super Mario Wii-U 3D - E3 2013 Interview Preview.
June 24th 2013

Back to something that isn’t Skylanders.
By the way Chris, how is Mario okay but Zelda needs to be “dark and gritty”. When people say they want Zelda to be like Skyrim or Dark Souls, they’re talking about the gameplay!
I won’t be too hard on him this time since I’m kind of looking forward to this game. Though like many others, I expected a game on the scale of 64 or Galaxy, and we just got an upgraded 3D Land with cats, and the Super Mario Bros 2/US cast with their same abilities. But the Wii U is in such a bad drought right now that I’ll take it. Plus, I like cats.

Of course, Bores calls the game “Super Mario World 3D” instead of “3D World”.
“I don’t think we can fit another anagram in there!” … You have no idea what an anagram is do you?
“I like it a lot better than uh Mario Wii U” I know he’s referring to New Super Mario Bros. U but… ugh it sounds so wrong.

Bores gushes over how the game harkens back to the old school for people like him. I thought you hated Super Mario Bros. 2? You made an entire video on it, it’s the one that GOT YOU NOTICED!
He mentions they “brought back” the Fuzzies from Super Mario World. You need to play more Mario games because the Fuzzies showed up in a lot more titles. All the Paper Mario games for instance, along with recent outings like Galaxy 2 and 3D Land .
“If I got it wrong, don’t send me a bunch of e-mails” No you got it right, but you’re still going to get a bunch of angry e-mails over other things. Especially since you’re bleeding subscribers.

Slightly off-topic, but GotGame’s E3 Awards are called the “Epic Win Awards”. … Yeah, that should give you a clue about how their site is run.

Video #12: Super Mario Wii-U 3D (Level 2-1) E3 2013 Gameplay
June 25th 2013
Exclusive to YouTube

Just like Mario Kart 8, we have more footage of Bores trying out the games.
Something I forgot to mention about the Mario Kart 8 footage. Bores suuuucks at the game. Like, really sucks. He keeps crashing into walls, he uses power-ups at the wrong time, it was a train wreck.
So does Bores fare any better here? Hell no! He is utterly terrible. No idea what he’s doing, the person playing Luigi is carrying him.

By the way, no sound again. Was it that hard to add music or post-commentary? Something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89VuI2nyINw

Another silent gameplay video. The title is a lie, there’s no interview here to be found.
Also, it’s called “Super Mario 3D World”, not “Super Mario Wii U 3D”. Do some fucking fact-checking dumbass.

Video #14: Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze - E3 2013 Interview Preview
June 25th 2013

Here’s Donkey Kong. Wonder why he didn’t mention it in the overall recap video from before.
He opens the interview saying he felt the last game was “missing something”. Didn’t you heap piles of praise onto it? I remember your review was gushing about how it’s such an “awesome upgrade that stays true to the ca-lassics” or some buzzword-filled crap like that. Then again, you didn’t play past World 2 so…

Other than that, lazy lazy interview. In fact it’s the shortest one. Characters, power-ups, same old shit.

Video #15: Dying Light - E3 2013 Interview Preview
June 26th 2013

Huh… didn’t see that coming. A zombie first-person shooter. Especially since Bores has avoided talking about FPS games since he complains they give him motion sickness.
*reads description* “The New Zombie Game from Warner Brothers” Actually, WB is just publishing. Development is being done by Techland, whose recent titles include Call of Juarez: The Cartel (gross), Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, Dead Island and Dead Island Riptide. Oooh boy…
Why are you showing interest in Dying Light? Didn’t you say you hated Dead Island and that it also gave you motion sickness?

Oh wow, it’s shorter than the Donkey Kong video.
Yeah… whole lot of nothing. Enemies, weapons, the game itself doesn’t even sound that exciting.
I do love how the developer was promoting that not only do fight zombies, you fight humans too. Yeah, that happened in The Last of Us, and that’s a better game. I know not to “judge a book by its cover”, but Techland’s resume leaves a lot to be desired.

Oh great… more Magic the Gathering. At least he spelled “duels” right this time.

*watches video* I didn’t understand a thing about that. I’ll have to consult my experts.

My experts couldn’t find much wrong. Just a usual boring interview. Figures.

Video #17: Marvel LEGO - E3 2013 Interview Preview
June 27th 2013

Yep, new Lego game… He never talked about Lego Lord of the Rings, did he?

Bland bland bland bland…
“You’ve done a lot of DC properties” All two of them. Lego Batman 1 and 2. Unless we’re in an alternate universe where Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter are DC properties.
Oh that’s right, Disney owns both Marvel and Star Wars now. Hilarious.
The rep says there’s 70 characters in the game. Really? I’m reading there’s 120. Which is it?
So much blaaaaaah *reads Wiki article* Oh sweet, Agent Phil Coulson is in the game.

Video #18: Diablo 3 Multiplayer! - E3 2013 Interview Preview
June 28th 2013

I would say I’m surprised, but he’s mentioned Diablo in the past. Like when he compared it to Castlevania Portrait of Ruin. Man… he sucks at comparisons.

Bores mentions he didn’t play Diablo III on PC because of the rumors about a console version. So if he’s willing to play PC games, why doesn’t he review them?
He also brings up the multiplayer. A feature Bores will ignore if he ever reviews this game.
“I heard you don’t have to be online to play multiplayer?” Well, not everyone since there’s LAN, but considering you have no friends, you’ll need to be online.
Gauntlet comparison…
Bores claims he remembers the original Diablo port on PS1, saying the controls were clunky. Either Steve told him this… or he really did play Diablo. What is he?

Maybe Bores really did play Diablo. There are people out there that have only played World of Warcraft, or Call of Duty. But that’s the thing, they’ve only played that one game, they know they’re not hardcore gamers. So why does Bores pretend to be hardcore? Why does he pretend to be an expert? Years ago I saw SWAGshow defend that, saying “he’s not a hardcore gamer”. Then why is he pretending to be a know-it-all with that “History of Video Games” crap? By the way, it’s been over 15 months since Bores released Part 5 of that. He still expects people to take this seriously?

Anyway, last video for this post.

Video #19: Disney’s Fantasia - (music evolved for Kinect) E3 2013 Interview Preview
June 28th 2013
Exclusive to YouTube

Fucking Kinect game? Seriously Bores? You can’t use it in your room! I’ve seen the room you do your videos, it is tiny! By the way, you never did talk about Kinect Star Wars since E3 2011. What happened, did the fact that you were the only person above the age of eight to like that game scare you?

I’ll be honest, when I heard the title I thought this could have been interesting. Making Fantasia set pieces set to all kinds of classical music. Then I saw the trailer, and I heard Bruno Mars. Yeah this is going to suck… Harmonix has fallen hard.

We actually get some footage of Bores playing, and good lord this game looks awful. Hey Harmonix, remember when you tried to get people to play real guitar with the “Pro Guitar” in Rock Band 3? Now we have… fireworks.
“This game is amazing” You know nothing Bores.
Then he compares it to Guitar Hero, but says it’s not like Guitar Hero. Ow, this hurts my brain.
Bores’ ADD must love the flashy colors, because this still looks terrible.
He asks if there’s Disney characters, and the rep goes into some schlock about music and interactivity. That’s funny, I heard Mickey and Yen Sid are going to be in the game. Fuck when is Kingdom Hearts III coming?

Bores urges everyone to check it out, and we end on more footage of him playing. When will he see Kinect is just a terrible gimmick?

It’s Friday so it’s time to post this. Aaagh, how much longer do we have of this?

    1. Actually he is making it pretty obvious that he is just putting words in the titles just for more viewers regardless of the relevancy of them. Too bad youtube doesn't tolerate stuff like that bores have fun when people find out. Man I really want a wii u but unfortunately I have no money and no job.

      Delete
    2. @ Micharion:

I don't have a Wii U either. In fact I probably won't get one for at least two years or more, unless I am lucky. Personally, I am not interested in getting a Wii U yet. I would say to wait for the price tag to drop, more updates or patches (if any) to arrive, and a larger library of games to accumulate before getting a Wii U (unless you must have it now as some diehard Nintendo fans did back during the November launch last year).

      Delete
    3. Well I would like to have it now is the thing but either way I would have to wait and considering I am probably going to do college it's going to be even harder to try and find a job. Of course I still don't know what I want to do with my life.

  2. So, once again, just the usual cluelessness from Bores: bad grammar, bad comparisons, flip-flopping on games he talked about in the last video. I'm also looking forward to Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze. I'm definitely putting the drinking game on hold. I may not actually drink, but I'd be jazzed on Mountain Dew Code Red within the first three minutes (which is the threshold I reached on DLAbaoqu's riff of the Home Improvement review). And yes, it has been about 15 months since the Fairchild Channel F HOVG (a video which itself took over a year for just 5 minutes of content). I'm also interested in Lego Marvel Super Heroes (my initial team would consist of Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, and Wolverine; and I love Coulson too); I'll probably rent it when it comes out. As I said in the last post, it's only a matter of time before he does something monumentally stupid (like you said, Twilight Princess is about as dark as Zelda is getting, and blowing up UbiSoft's office was amazingly bad). See you later, Dan.

He also (unintentionally) showcased one of the biggest problems with the industry, the reliance on ultra-violence.

      Delete
    2. Yeah I honestly don't get why every game now has to be extremely violent just to sell. Of course this just might be me an old fart, somehow, considering I am pretty much living proof that people that played games of a violent nature when young do not become killers. I played Perfect Dark and Unreal Tournament before I was a teenager.

    3. I feel like the Gamin industry is going down the same slope that the comic industry in the 90s. More violence, overly dark and melodramatic stories, and releasing more crap in such a short time. Hopefully the gaming industry can stop these problems from leading to a crash that will almost destroy them. The comic industry didnt see the writing on the wall until it was too late

    4. Well, Nintendo's grip on the consumer is slowly loosening and they were prominent contributors in family oriented entertainment. If they don't step up, we just may get to the point where all games look like rejected Christopher Nolan movies. They seriously need to take a break from all the Mario titles and focus on original content. Because when it comes down to it, we NEED Nintendo around. Do you have any idea how dull the console wars would be without them sitting on the sidelines? Without Nintendo, it'd be all about making the best grapics engine. Innovative isn't always good, but it at least keeps things interesting.

  5. Here are my reactions to some of these videos:

    Skylanders Swap Force:

Epic Interview? Yeah, that's true. It was epic because of how BORING it was. Both parts of the interview are about characters, gameplay, levels, voice actors, and release date. That's pretty much it.
Although in the second video, Chris asks if any characters from past Spyro games will make a comeback (while displaying a picture of the cover art for Spyro: Ripto's Rage on the screen) and the representative says no, besides Spyro and Cynder. All I can say is: THANK. GOODNESS! Seriously, Spyro's character design looks terrible compared to his design in Spyro 1, 2, 3, or even A Hero's Tail. If Activision included other characters (Hunter, Elora, Bianca, etc.), I bet their character designs would be butchered too.

    Super Mario 3D World Gameplay:

Yeah, Chris does suck at the game (even though it's not as evident here compared to Mario Kart 8). I'm surprised he picked Toad as his character in the second gameplay video considering he hated Toad in Super Mario Bros. 2 (despite hating on him for stupid and false reasons). Besides that, not much to say here.

    Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze:

It's obvious that Chris has never played any Donkey Kong Country game besides DKCR. Underwater swimming is not a new innovation and he probably has no idea who Dixie Kong, aka Diddy Kong's cute girlfriend, is (I haven't played a single game starring her and even I somewhat know who she is). Also, "the last Donkey Kong"? You mean, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D? That was the most recent game in the DKC series after all. Again, he has never played any other game in the series besides DKCR. Oh and nice mug shot at the end of the video, Chris.

    Also @ BatDan:
You mentioned last year during E3 2012 that you had purchased Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure and some character figures for the game. If you feel like it, could you please share your thoughts on the game?

  6. I will point out the grammar error in the title. If a word ends with “s”, you merely add an apostrophe by itself. Otherwise you get stuff like “Chris’s”.

    1. It's DEFINITELY correct in the UK. In fact it drives me nuts when people in Britain don't put an s after an apostrophe just because the word ends with an s. The worst offender I can think of is St Thomas' Hospital. Maybe it's different in America though, since Chris's pronunciation of melee as 'mee-lay' didn't seem too bad to me either. I've heard 'meh-lay' deemed acceptable as well, so it seems it's the 'lay' part that's important. Try pronouncing it as 'mee lee' or 'melly' though and that'll result in some heads in hands.

      Delete
    2. I believe the apostrophe after an s only applies with multiple owners.

    3. I haven't watched it yet. Hopefully it's better than Ikari Warriors and Toxic Crusaders.

I'm still kind of looking forward to the AVGN movie, but starting to lose interest in the rest. "James and Mike Play" has become more entertaining than AVGN episodes.

I'm also not too fond of how he removed the 'fan games' section (people put a lot of work into those) or how he's been blowing off jayrod2.

    4. @tpcooldevelopment
Yeah, I was actually going to point that out. I would assume that the Nerd was so baffled and fustrated by the game that he couldn't even come up with anymore good jokes, and since the game sucked so bad, it probably wasn't even worth wasting anymore good jokes on it. Or he's just running out of good jokes.

Also, is it me, or has he been lip syncing himself in this episode? He seems to be talking throughout the first half, but then it seems that he's lip syncing and barely keeping up with his own manic dialogue throughout the rest. It's so obvious to me that it kinda hurts looking at it. I can understand him lip syncing on small parts in past reviews (Top Gun, Atari 5200, Virtual Boy), but to do it for a full episode...? I do not think that's a good sign.

      @Shaolin Dave

I am sure that James is mostly trying to avoid drama of some kind. He has a lot going on with him, what with his movie still in development. As for the fangames, with the "official fan game" coming out, hopefully the makers of the previous fan games would mirror their games in a site related to Cinemassacre.

  11. I noticed when it comes to Skylanders he acts surprisingly competent cause it's something he likes. Granted that didn't make the "review preview" any less boring but still I wouldn't have a problem with this if only he put the same competence into his reviews only less boring. I'm actually surprised he's familiar with the old Spyro games due to the fact he never brought them up until now. I was sure he'd be like the rest of the internet and hate Skylanders just because Spyro looks a little different given his love-hate relationship with Sonic.

There are a handful of Kinect games I find enjoyable like The Gunstringer and Kinect Sports but Bores just always seems to spring for the flops like the Star Wars video game and now Fantasia. I just don't get it.

Case in point, he claimed that Sonic Adventure was just as bad as Sonic 06. Now THAT'S stupid. It's not even a matter if you dislike either game, he's just wrong.

Eh... Really? You'd put him in the same category as iJustine? Those aren't the kinda words you can easily take back, you know. That's like someone saying that your artistic direction is on par with Ed Wood.

    6. Well to be perfectly honest, Egoraptor always seemed like a Poser when it comes to Retro Games.

It was even worse with GameGrumps which was just him and JonTron Gloating themselves over Random Shit-talk jokes rather than insight over the game they were playing, and i am sorry, but..

They Touching Gems like Wild Guns and Pocky & Rocky 1 and causing this games to go to Cruel Un-affordable prices on EBAY and Retro Stores, ALL Because of Game Grumps and Egoraptor pretending to know about Retro Gaming.........

It Feels Like a stab at the Heart.

And i am not making the whole, "Game Grumps causing games to go at high prices", If at the very least they weren't a bunch of Posers, I mean what do you think is the Reason is, For Real, Banned to mention them on /Vr/

    7. It was even worse when people actually Sent them games to play, i know it shouldn't be that much of a deal, since they are donations, but for example, at the very least, James never asked people to donate games, the fans send him games.

    8. I've never really been a fan of Egoraptor, even during his animation days. He had a couple of funny cartoons (like the PSP Squirrels one) but most of them were the same, and while his animation got better, his humor got worse (PokeAwesome is a good example of this).

When I compare him to iJustine and DSP, I mean in the way that they don't actually pay attention to what the game is showing them, and act like morons that can't figure anything out.

Glad it isn't just me who thinks so. And please, don't remind me of PokeAwesome 2. I'd very much like to keep that crap out of my mind as long as I can... I thought the Concole vs PC short was pretty funny though.

I understand that he and Jon are just trying to be funny, but when it gets to the point that you're blaming the game for your own stupidity... well, why would I take ANYTHING you say about gaming seriously?

Then again, incompetence in playthroughs can be made funny. The first eight videos in BSC's Pokemon Leaf Green playthrough has Lewis sucking HARD at the game and wasting time. It's made funny by the other commentators calling him out on it. One of my favorite exchanges comes from part 8, where he was STILL on the nugget bridge:

Lewis: "We are getting so off topic that it's actually kinda funny"

Johnny: "Well Lewis, have you see what's happening on screen?"

Lewis: "Yes, I just killed an Ekans"

Johnny: "That's right, not a God damn thing!"

    10. i have mixed feelings about egoraptor. i agree with his feelings designers shouldn't depend on forced tutorials or manuals to teach players about the game.
when i design games, i think like an arcade designer. if the player can't grab the controller, see what's on screen, and figure out what to do, then i've failed as a designer.

    1. Do you mean didn't go well because the footage was poor? or didn't go well because rookie mcdumbfuck shot everyone other than the aliens?

    2. The sectoids were unusually good shots. I know corners in a UFO are to be taken with caution but yeesh one shot one kill for most of them. It is not easy to recover after losing the entire team especially on experienced.

    3. Two tips I've got for you

      1. Use high explosive bombs to leak explosions into the hull.

      2. Using the look command (right click) it is possible to open a UFO door and not do anything. Use this to peak and shoot the aliens before reaction fire occurs.

That said I would probably save scum.

    4. I don't really want to save scum on a recording is the thing even though I know in some cases X-Com can be unfair. I don't really know how to open the door without going in. Also I don't know how explosives work exactly since I have yet to try them I will probably try them next time though.

    5. To open a door without going in, just have soldier stand in front of the door and give a look command in the direction of the door. You may have to double click and if that doesn't work, you can just give a move command on the door.

    2. Honestly, I've been avoiding Teen Titans: Go for awhile. Just seemed like Cartoon Network were trying to get the same type of following FiM did for Nickelodeon. I could be wrong of course. How is the show as a whole?

      Delete
    3. I wouldn't say it's anywhere near the level of the original show, but on its own merits I verily enjoyed it. It made me chuckle a few times, and admittedly I kind of enjoy this lighter take on the characters.
