Look At My Face Over This South Park Game!

A new video already? That’s surprising.
It’s a review of South Park: The Stick of Truth, which came out today. And like past reviews where he puts out a video the same day as release, it’s going to suuuuuck.

Chris posted the video on YouTube, and embedded it to GotGame with some poorly written text to go with it. Here are some “highlights” from the text review.

He shows the picture of his own character, and… I guess it’s a South Park version of him? He then calls it “Super Sweet”. Even when people used “sweet”, they didn’t say “super sweet”, your use of slang is outright alien.

“The way your character moves across the screen is awesome” Wow, that is a horribly written line. Is that really something worth praising? The way they move across the screen?
“The animation is amazing that way!” Yes, because South Park is known for its amazing animation.
“The battle sequences are set up like a final fantasy type of system” No it’s not. It looks more like Super Mario RPG, with timed hits and everything.
“and there is a learning curve of getting all the nuances down pat.” Like all games that don’t hold your hand throughout? I remember the days when learning curves weren’t something to complain about *glares at negative Wonderful 101 reviews*

He doesn’t say much else. Onto the video!

The video ope- oh my god we’re in trouble. Chris is not on his set, instead he’s on a couch in a completely different room. He is also filming with a webcam! Wow, and I thought his previous Neo reviews were slapped together without care, this one isn’t even trying!
Because of this, I’m not doing the timestamps. If Chris isn’t going to try, then why should I bother?

He says Ubisoft sent him the game and he’s unwrapping it on camera. Yeah, he hasn’t even played it yet before hitting record. This is going to be a treat. Also, how are you on good terms with Ubisoft after that E3 video? I know it’s been years, but that was a pretty serious threat. No follow through at all…
“Here’s the disc, it looks pretty cool” … Who… talks about discs looking cool? You can tell there’s no script, no thought put into any of this. Especially since he’s talking about how the disc looks.

He puts the game in… are we really doing this? Facecam! Chris is doing facecam! Finally jumping on that trend… Noticed how you’re not making money at all from the abysmal views? “It worked for PewDiePie, it will work for me!” As long as he doesn’t start screaming about rape.
He complains about there being an update. Oh boo hoo, get used to the updates, all modern games have them now. Wait, Stick of Truth came out today, meaning this is a Day 1 update. Oh… that’s where things look sketchy. Of course, Chris doesn’t address that it’s a Day 1 update, just that it’s an update. There is a difference.

And apparently we’re dropping the face cam and doing post-production narration. You do realize that ADD shouldn’t pour over into the editing right?
He gushes over the character creation. You do realize that a lot of games have this right? If anything, South Park’s customization is kind of lame since you can’t customize facial features. I know I know it’s the artsyle, everyone has the same face, but still it’s nothing compared to other games.

He brings up the opening cutscene with the protagonists parents, and compares the dad to Fred Armisen from Portlandia. I… don’t see it. *shrugs* Also, Portlandia? Why not Saturday Night Live, that’s where he’s more well known.
He goes on and on about interacting with the environment, acting like this is completely new even though so many other games do this. At one point the facecam comes back to show him laughing at a joke.

He brings up the jokes, and more laughing on face cam.
He arrives to Cartman’s backyard, pointing out how it’s called “Kupa Keep”, and seems to think it’s a play on “King Koopa”. … I don’t think so. He’s really grasping at straws here.
EDIT: Turns out the full name is "The Kingdom of Kupa Keep", or KKK. It's not South Park unless it's something offensive. King Koopa my ass. Thanks to Guru Larry for informing me of this.
He brings up the classes, but doesn’t say  what they do. Only lets what Cartman says play out, and mentions how his humor isn’t politically correct. Ya don’t say!

He finally gets got the battling, and only looks over the tutorial. He claims it’s like Final Fantasy. Noooo, I said above that it’s more like Super Mario RPG.
He claims it took him 30 minutes to figure out the game. *looks at gameplay* How? It looks simple! Explain where the difficulty comes from! Don’t just assure that your word alone is good enough!

Chris keeps gushing about the references, the references, the references, oh my god it keeps going!

At around 4:36, notice how he’s laughing on the facecam, but the narration starts up. So, what’s the point of the face cam? Just to show your laughter?

“Let me just preface that this game is not for kids in any shape form or fashion” REALLY? FUCKING REALLY?! You mean the comedy intended for adults is meant for adults?! Chris has made such a shocking discovery today!
… It’s Rated M for Mature! Not intended for children under 17! It’s the ESRB! How do you still not know this?! Video games aren’t just a child’s plaything anymore!
Also, you used “preface” wrong again. It’s meant to be at the beginning, not near the end. Me am good grammars.

He then stops when he reaches a wall of rats and says the game is great and blah blah blah, followed by the most tired “Game On” I’ve ever seen.

What was the point of this? He didn’t even beat the game. I seriously doubt this was an early review copy, he probably picked it up early morning and made the video shortly after his play session.
Why the face cam? Why show yourself laughing at the jokes? It’s South Park, we can assume it’s going to be funny. You don’t have to show yourself laughing to tells us it’s funny!
If the next Neo review has face cam, then I guess that’s going to be his new gimmick. Right down to the use of webcam and lazy script.

  1. Despite some flaws I think its one of the better IG Neo reviews that Bores done imo

Let's at least give Bores credit for getting three videos out in something like three weeks.

Oh, and just so buggin gets it through her thick skull I am not threatening him I am warning him. I don't get all up in arms about bashing games the fanbase in question on the other hand that is another story.

    2. Micharion, have you dealt with any rabid Zelda fanboys?

      Delete
    3. No, but I know that when it comes to Ocarina of Time saying that it is a bad game is a bad idea. Mostly I am just assuming that it would very likely be the same with A Link Between Worlds what with it being one of the few Zeldas to be liked as soon as it came out.

      Delete
    4. @ Micharion:
I have to be honest; before playing A Link Between Worlds, I was disappointed that you had to rent or purchase items from Ravio instead of finding them inside of dungeons like every other game in the series (I know that the first Zelda game on the NES had you buy items from shops/caves, but you still found some of the more crucial items in dungeons). I also was confused about why every item from Ravio used magic power. (I can understand the fire rod and tornado rod using magic power, but arrows and bombs too?)
However, after playing the game for a while now, those two issues don't bother me that much anymore. I am really enjoying the game so far, what with exploring both Hyrule and Lorule as well as searching high and low for Pieces of Heart and the missing Maiamais.
If Bores did review A Link Between Worlds, I doubt the review would be very good, especially since he said on his website last summer that he was disappointed with it not being a remake of A Link to the Past.

    5. My bad; it was last October that Bores said A Link Between Worlds didn't impress him, not last summer.

  5. Excellent article, but one thing to point out.

You mentioned how people don't say "SuperSweet" and the slang is alien. However, in South Park, the phrase is actually common. It was used twice in the movie, in the opening song by Cartman, and in the closing song by Kyle's mom.

I'm also pretty sure that Cartman has said that numerous times throughout the series. Not 100% certain about that one though.

As far as the video itself goes, it's still not anywhere near good. This time though, I have to give Bores some credit, he actually said something that goes along with what he's doing.

    Other than that, excellent article.

One question I really have about it is Azrael going to be in it and is this the hell he was referring to in his message?

  13. I'm only a little ways into the game (PS3). I've just met Token, and completed a couple side quests.
The games a tad buggy. Sometimes black circles appear where prompts use to show up. Sometimes characters will speak at the same time. Lag is a bigger issue, sometimes creating sync issues in cut scenes. In battle, lag will occasionally prevent successfully performing time-based attacks and blocks.
Those few bugs can hopefully be fixed with a patch. Aside from that, the game is great. Although I've never played "Paper Mario", I had no problem learning the combat system. Every aspect of its presentation emulates the show perfectly.

  14. I would like to note that reviewers tend to get games much earlier than they are released so it doesn't make sense for Chris Bores to be getting the game at release date. There's a reason why reviews come out before the game comes out, its to hype up the sales. If Ubisoft is in fact giving Chris Bores the game at release date then there are insulting the shit out of him by saying "Here eat out of hands, we don't give a shit what you think" and here Chris taking the insult face first.

  15. Too bad I've never played Wonderful 101, as Action RPGs do not interest me. However, as a non-player the criticisms made perfect sense. When a game fails to explain basic gameplay elements like unite attacks, that's not a learning curve, that's being needlessly obtuse.

It reminds me of the creator of the first Baten Kaitos game. He said that the dungeons and mazes in that game had no map, despite how easy it was to get lost, because he remembered making maps as a kid and wanted others to experience that. Here I was thinking, Uh, yeah. There's a REASON why games got rid of that annoying element - which, I must add, was more because of poorer technology or lack of experimentation than conscious decisions".

    ReplyDelete

    1. Fortunately, Baten Kaitos Origins fixed the whole "getting lost" problem (among SEVERAL other issues) and it's one of my favorite RPG's. The only dungeons I think someone could get lost in are Zaurak Keep and Tarazed. That's kinda it.

"This game is not for kids."

Oh really? Did the words "South Park" tip you off or was it the "M" rating?

    ---

    LadyBuggin's response?

"Seeing that South Park's main characters are "kids," most kids would be interested in purchasing the game, one would think. They may not be old enough to know that it really isn't geared for children. Not all parents would know this before purchasing the game for their children till they get home and see that the game is really geared for an older audience. I'm just amused you couldn't figure that out for yourself, and needed an explaination? :D

    7. Fat joke?
He was mocking Chris' taking way too long. He's saying by the time he's done, he would be over 100 years old. Most people don't live that long.

      Delete
    8. Its roughly two years per video in the HoVG series. Assuming the human life span is 80 years and Chris is 40 (yeah I know its an overestimation), Chris would have time to make 10 more parts. I'm pretty sure he would be able to finish the history of videos games in 10 parts or less unless we were to consider that he would have a fatal heart attack before 80. Of course every joke has its own interpretations, I tend to find the funny even in the things that shouldn't have them.

      Delete
    9. But by the time he had told video game history up to 2014, many more generations of console, and whole new paradigms in the technology, marketing and experience of gaming will have come and gone.

His Magnavox Odyssey video came out 3 1/2 years ago. His Fairchild Channel F video, two years ago.

Those consoles hit the market in 1972 and 1976, so it has taken him 18 months to cover 4 years of gaming history. This is not a straight linear progression to a prescribed end, it's closer to Sisyphus pushing a rock up a hill.

      Delete
    10. "Sisyphus pushing a rock up a hill"
The problem with this analogy is implying that the HOVG series has a set goal and ending. I'm pretty sure that the HOVG series is just an power fantasy that Chris has to make himself look like a gamer. If it isn't then why the hell does he have so many research mistakes on it?

People who are clearly willing to defend the Irate Gamer and by extension Chris Bores despite how clear and obvious of a jackass he is, obviously aren't going to care if the information is wrong, heck reading and doublechecking is beyond people who do that. Chris's problems and blatant trolling are so obvious to the point that it took less than one week for someone running a undercover operation to have evidence of Chris personally encouraging people to troll others. We're here because its fun to be here and we leave when its not fun or boring to be here. It's pretty clear you are just trying to get other people to start a feud with Blaze the movie fan and quite frankly no one cares. How you can get a laugh at people who write and believe the same things you did is beyond me.

  35. Well, here's a baffler on his webpage:

    http://theirategamer.com/movies-have-the-most-terrible-endings/

Apparently, he saw an article on movies with bad endings and is rebutting/agreeing/commenting upon it, but there's no link to the original article or a source website or author mentioned. Any idea what he's responding to?

    1. he did the same thing for a top 10 movies that fans hated.

He said he did not agree on why I, Robot with Will Smith was on the list because he (Chris Bores) loved the movie.

What got me rubbing my eyes and facepalming is when he agreed on Michael Bay's Transformers for being "Not like G1."

Okay, I'm getting f*cking sick and tired of everyone coming up with that statement, especially you, Bores as I say this ONE LAST TIME: Bay's Transformers film series WERE NOT, and I say one last time, WERE NOT based on G1. The movies and the tv shows of everything to the Transformers franchise were created to advertised TOYS! That's all! TOYS! Not 1980s cartoon show! TOYS!!!! Just like your little precious Skylanders that you f*cking cuddle with in your sleep, the games are meant to advertise TOYS! End of story.

*sigh* God, I hate repeating myself but I had dealt with that issue with Transformers fans in the past when the movies came out.

    2. You should check out the article where he cries about Mr. Peabody & Sherman under-performing and doesn't understand why. My word he's so naive.
Then he writes off all of Dreamworks upcoming movies for stupid reasons. His rants really make no sense.

      Delete
    3. I assume he watches WatchMojo's Top Ten worst movie endings and half-assedly write his own top ten list.

Please Bores, there are endings out there that are FAR WORSE than X-Men: The Last Stand, Indiana Jones 4 and Castaway.

If you want a REALLY terrible movie ending, watch The Cavern or The Devil Inside (which I doubt you know what these two movies are).

    4. @THESHIELD: Yes, and G1 includes the toys from that period. Even if the movies aren't based on that specific period, it's an understandable mistake, given the number of characters from G1, including a Witwicky.

    5. @lupus753 I remember He11sing920's Fanboy Chronicles rant video about Transformers fan bitching about the Michael Bay movies as he said it best:

"In the end, it's not really about movies and cartoons that they bitch about. When it all boils down, they (the Transformers fans and Chris Bores himself) are complaining about the TOYS. And before anybody corrects me by saying:

'No man! I'm not talking about the toys! I f*cking love the series!'

If it wasn't for the TOYS, you wouldn't have your series! If it wasn't for some marketing genius putting out Transformers toys, there wouldn't be no Transformers cartoon (the cartoons were created to give the toys a personality that any fan who played or collected Transformers figures can actually latch onto). Same thing can be said about the Unicron Trilogy, Beast Wars, Beast Machines; about the only one that is more merchandising driven is the Michael Bay movie series. All of them are all merchandise driven. So you honestly you have to also hang your hat on the merchandise that is attached to those products. Because without them, your show of choice wouldn't exist."

And I can imagine Chris Bores saying this as a response (once again from He11sing's old video).

Chris Bores (scorned): No...I never touched a Transfomers toy in my life. I just love Generation 1! Now f*ck off.

  38. The Bores has a new contest/show news video up. He says the next IG episode will be in "a few weeks." I assume that means late April or sometime in May.

He also said he thinks he'll work on a new History of Video Games episode.

What really got me is that he said he has a roughdraft of the timeline of the final episode. I assume he means a story board?

Shouldn't he have had a script and storyboard ready before he ever began filming way back in 2010?

    3. @MacDragard-

Yeah, I got the sense that this was a big clearance sale. I mean, he made it a point to say that EVERYTHING is on sale.

To answer your question, I have been to the last four MAGFest events and go to PAX Prime and I have never, ever seen anybody with Irate Gamer clothing or any other IG merchandise.

    1. Well to be fair, this is just a logical escalation of the bullshit charades that countries are having against each other. Did you know that Russia is playing people money per comment as long as the comment says something negative about US? Its gotten so ridiculous that literally every article regarding the recent Ukraine crisis is just riddled with fake accounts saying "Hey look CIA did that, aren't the american such imperialist bastards, Russia deserves to send tanks into another person's country" and the broken voting system (you can refresh your page and the system will allow you to vote again) means that these get a ridiculous amount of thumbs up for a comment that is literally dumber than shit.

Until societies as a whole stop the whole stupid "We have to be #1" crap we're just going to have to deal with paid politic commentary from "Botaccount21" and this new super flagger system has been declared to not be about copyright infringement. So we can expect even more political censorship on youtube.

To be fair though... who gives a shit about politics on youtube? If it isn't worth talking politics on 'the guardian' because of Russian bot accounts, who the hell will talk politics on youtube (and expect anything more than stupidity and repetition)?

Evidence for Russia paying for jackass trolls:
      http://dolboeb.livejournal.com/2565817.html#
Site for jobs for the aforementioned jackass
      http://vk.com/promolux

And on a last note: Youtube says the super flaggers are based on getting rid of pornography and hate speech. Yeah because youtube clearly has problems with pornography and still thinks people are gullible enough to think they actually give a crap about hate speech even when they get dozens upon dozens of requests each day to shut certain jackasses up and never did anything about it. How is giving 200 people supreme power going to help anyone?

  43. Over at cinemassacre.com, James posted a movie update that's 24 minutes long, mostly of him talking about the minute technical details of the moviemaking process.

Any ten seconds of the video features more coherent information, and sustains more viewer interest, than Bores' entire last video where he attempted to explain how hard it is to make a story arc video.

That difference alone is truly astonishing; that Bores would still try to tear down James, or compare himself favorably in any way, really goes beyond belief. I kind of want to start a missionary charity devoted to tracking down all of Bores' fans and gently transitioning them over to watching Cinemassacre, just in case any of them hope to be filmmakers someday.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Bores' stupidity continues to astound me everyday.

He just posted an article about Mighty No. 9 at GDC, and he goes "It looks to be very similar to Megaman" No shit! It's the spiritual successor by Inafune since Capcom doesn't want to make anymore Mega Man games.

He also tries to be "funny" by bringing up how there's 8 evil robots and "Might #9" (his words, I know he's called Beck) is the exception and he goes "Where have I heard that before?" Ugh, quit being an ignorant idiot.
