Thirty-Two Months Later: What Is Even the Point?

Why does Chris even bother with the “Irate Gamer” name these days? He never talks about video games, and he’s never “angry” about anything. Really, the only reason he’s still going is that it’s his only channel to have some sort of base on it. Even though the views on the Skylanders and ghost videos are appalling. Of course, Chris will blame YouTube instead of himself because he’s a narcissistic moron. I still don’t understand how people believe that “opening up” video despite the complete lack of proof.

Hm? Bores posted something new? If it’s ghosts I don- HISTORY OF VIDEO GAMES?! WHAT?!
Yeah, this came out of nowhere. After TWO YEARS AND EIGHT MONTHS without a new installment, he actually released one. He was actually serious about continuing. Not that it will ever be finished (spoiler alert: He’s never going to reach the NES at his pace).
As a reminder, Chris started History of Video Games five years ago, and he’s only just now gotten to the Atari 2600. Are you serious with this crap? Give. Up. There is no more point, you are not talented or smart enough to keep this going.

*breathes* I think I’m ready to take this on.

Let’s take a look at the description.
“The Golden Age of Video Games is fast approaching!” Approaching? The 2600 is part of the Golden Age! Oh wait, that’s right. Bores is a moron and thinks that everything before this was the Silver Age, even though that makes no sense. Then again, he did call Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels the “perfect predecessor” to the first SMB so he probably doesn’t know the difference.

Onto the video!

0:00 - 0:42: Oh jeez, he’s using that “For over 35 years…” intro again. He changed it up a bit as there’s footage of him playing an arcade game, and he added footage of the Legend of Zelda tech demo (from 2011), even though that’s not how the Wii U Zelda actually looks. You know Chris, if you want to make a series talking about history, it helps to stay up to date with current events.

0:43 - 2:05: We start with the history stuff. Modern stock footage, bits of Bores being “wacky”, such as walking in a green screen arcade full of “bad games”, and “drowning” in Pong consoles.
He brings up Warner buying Atari and the release of the Atari VCS (the console’s official name before the 5200’s release, we’ll see if Bores brings that up).
He points out how the VCS allowed swappable cartridges to extend the life of the system, with a bit where he gets “mad” at a game.
Then he shows the joystick with the single button, leading to a “wacky” green screen bit where he presses the button and a battlefield appears behind him, with a solider firing a rocket at him. Yep… same random crap.
Then he points out the switches on the console. When he gets to the one that lets you reset the game, we get a joke where he locks himself into a loop resetting himself until another version of him appears to punch him out. Wouldn’t this “joke” work better if that was someone else? I just don’t get why you clone yourself. Are you that unwilling to have other people in your videos?

2:06 - 2:37: “On October 1st 1977” Wrong! The Atari 2600 was released September 11th 1977. Where did you even get October 1st?
At least he got the price right.
“Here’s a fast fact” Are you still saying that for “consistency” or “popular demand”? Likely the former as I doubt anyone is demanding that.
He brings up how they didn’t make money on the console, but by the games since they were cheap to make. Going to mention how this means they had to sell the console on the games, a philosophy that continues to this day? Of course not, he doesn’t understand.

Something about labeling the games by genre, I can’t really find anything on that.
Atari launched with 9 games. Onto the review then, I’m guessing we’ll get a lot of “this sucks compared to modern standards” idiocy.

2:38 - 3:40: He starts with Combat.
“One of these was the Arcade version of Tank, but scaled down…” Actually, Combat is a combination of Tank and Jet Fighter, a game you’ve neglected to mention before.
“By pressing the Game Select button” It’s not a button, it’s a switch. There’s a difference.
There are a multitude of “boards” to select, and then we get a “joke” about the “Combat Hall of Fame”, showing Bores on top of a pillar, but then (I guess) narrator Bores says it doesn’t exist and the pillar disappears. You know, there’s a post on Facebook my informant mentioned to me. I’ll address it at the end so keep all these “jokes” in mind.
You can also play as planes and jets, and even as three jets at once. Prompting more Bores clones, as they all “control” the triple jet. Set to the 1812 Overture because … it’s something Family Guy would probably do.
However, he loses because he’s too big of a target (with fake “You Lose” text that clearly doesn’t belong, does he think we’re idiots?) and then… the three Bores’ launch into a weak Three Stooges routine. Here’s some advice Chris, the Three Stooges routine doesn’t work when there’s only one of you! Get some god damn friends to help you!

3:41 - 5:33: He moves onto Indy 500.
“The point is to drive faster than the other car” IS THAT WHAT A RACING GAME IS?! WOW!
The controls don’t seem to work, which sounds like a problem with him as the info I find say the game works well, leading to a pointless appearance from Mr. Magoo. HE EXISTED!
EDIT: Turns out the reason the game didn't work is that he was using the wrong controller! In the video he was using the Paddle Controller, NOT the Driving Controller. Only the Driving Controller will work with the game. Nice research Bores! Thank you to Guru Larry for pointing this out.

Then he moves to Video Olympics, and a bit where he overreacts to the fact it’s more Pong. And then a montage of the different games set to Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance (look it up), of course with “jokes” thrown in like “Genghis Pong, King Kong Pong (NO! The joke was right there! It’s King Pong you fool!) and Hong Pong Phooey (oh that’s why he didn’t use King Pong, because “me childhood”)”. Jeez this video is padded.
And of course a pong ball hits the cartridge out of his hand because… yep…

He moves to Street Racer
He briefly explains the mechanics and then a montage of him constantly losing (with more fake text). After a while he stabs his eye out with the joystick and more Mr. Magoo (his impression is as usual terrible). What is the point to any of this?!
And yeah, that’s what people want to see in a documentary about video games, someone stabbing their own eye with a joystick. And he wonders why people don’t take him seriously!
He then shows the other modes, and finds one that he doesn’t understand. That’s skiing, those are skis, you’re going down a mountain. Do research.

5:34 - 6:21: Onto Air-Sea Battle. More gameplay, more of the modes, ending on one where you can move the turrets, leading to one of them to leave the game, go into IG’s room and shoot him in the face. Again, he coughs up Styrofoam. Is that supposed to be his teeth? I’m sure you could find fake teeth out there.

Onto Star Ship. He mentions the stuff you need to shoot, and finds ships that resemble Klingon Warbirds of Prey from Star Trek. *looks up Klingon ships* They look nothing like that! I get the feeling this is just an excuse for more jokes.
Yeeep, Spock appears and has a “shocked” expression, which is just his eyes getting really wide and cartoon-y.
Also, according to Memory Alpha (the Star Trek wiki), there’s a difference between a Klingon Warbird and a Klingon Bird of Prey. I’m sure someone far more versed in Star Trek lore can explain this better.

EDIT: I sort of missed this the first time around, but Bores tells Spock to fire all the weapons. Spock doesn't handle the weapons on Star Trek, usually it's Chekov. Thanks to Jonathan Wilson and Brandon Brown for informing me.

6:22 - 7:14: Onto the last three games!
He shows Blackjack, but needs to put a joke in there so he confuses it with “Jack Black”. Again, keep these “jokes” in the back of your mind.
Then shows Basic Math, looks incredulous, then the Count from Sesame Street appears to tell him the answer to 3+3. Oh my god, that is the worst Count impression I have ever heard. Whoever said you can do voices LIED!
Then Surround, a sort of two-player Snake. It looks like the inspiration for the Tron light cycles. Any mention of that Bores? Of course not, he’s never going to mention how these old games inspired future ones. He knows nothing!
Of course, why explain that when we can have sketches! Enjoy a long sketch of two guys “playing“. It’s pointless and adds nothing. Is this why it took two years? Because you didn’t have enough stupid jokes?

Video concludes with more history. He mentions something about Bushnell not wanting the console to be sold after the holidays (it’d help if you source this stuff), the hiring of Ray Kassar, and then he shows an entire 2600 commercial. Padding?
Afterwards, he says the tide of the industry was turning, and a pointless splash effect. WE GET IT, you have effects! Stop it!
Next time, the Arcade games of 1978. Let me guess, another two years. See what I meant from earlier when I said he’ll never reach the NES? If the next episode is ONLY 1978, this shit is going to take forever and will never end. Cut your losses Bores and stop!

Uggggh.
This was barely informative, and those were barely “reviews”. This was all one giant excuse for Bores to have random Family Guy-esque sketches. Isn’t that the point of the I Rate the 80s series? To stroke his nostalgia and randomness boners over there? You can’t expect people to take either series seriously anyway.
Not to mention getting things wrong… as per usual. And now to wait years on end for Part 7.

Oh and you know how I said to keep all these jokes in the back of your mind? Well, my Facebook informant saw someone post this Top 10 YouTube comedians video. Bores responded saying "A lot of my humor is a bit on the dry side so I doubt I'd be on that list"
… Dry? DRY? You don’t know what dry humor is! It’s deadpan comedy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadpan You are not deadpan, your style is off-the-wall randomness and references. There is nothing dry about reacting to stupid characters. Maybe you should spend more time researching comedy than trying to find ghosts.

Say Bores, how about trying to defend Sonic Boom now? Oh that’s right, you stopped making Neo videos for whatever reason. Somehow, GotGame has yet to dump him. It can’t be site traffic, he hasn’t posted anything there in months. Someone has to know.

  1. Batdan you forgot to mention Bores says "fire at will Mr.Spock" when Spock was the science officer and never (in my recollection of TOS) never once was on weapons shows how much he knows about Star Trek

I forget, who was normally responsible for firing weapons?

    2. Chekov or Sulu. Usually Chekov but they are both run from the same area of the bridge. You can see this in The Wrath of Kahn. Spock's station is in the back facing away from the veiwscreen. It makes no sense to ask him to fire weapons.

  2. Sorry, can I just point out that the reason the Indy 500 game didn't work was because he was using the Paddle Controller and not the Racing Controller.

(Racing controllers spin freely, where as paddle controllers lock after a 360 degree rotation).

He was using completely the wrong controller, it even says on the cartridge the paddle controllers won't work on it!!!

    1. The Paddle also will cause strange interactions with this game because of it's two controllers to one port set up. It will only turn the car half of the way while the other paddle does the other half. Even worse it tends to switch back and forth as how the system was set up to let 4 players function would confuse the game's programming.

It is nearly impossible to play that game with he paddle controler.

    2. @Guru Larry - I bet Bores is going to try to convince his "fans" and "buddies" that he knew you use the Driving Controller for Indy 500, but says he used the Paddle Controller as a joke in a futile attempt to avoid another entry on his "Did Not Do Research" page on TVTropes... XD

  5. Meh, the video wasn't too bad but the jokes are so predictable that I wasn't smiling the whole time. It's boring. Plain and simple.

Also, to be honest, I'm kinda disappointed that Sonic Boom turned out so horrible. I thought it was a game that had potential but instead, it turns out to be a truckload of crap. -__-

    1. I haven't seen any of it yet but it's only a couple of episodes in, so unless it really is Satan's ballsack I'd say stick with it for at least another few weeks. There's been loads of shows, animated or otherwise, that I didn't really get into at the start but ended up enjoying. I don't think I liked a single episode from the first half of Dexter's first season but I kept going and eventually found some quality there. Didn't think much of The Wire at first either but it ended up being one of my favourite shows of all time.

    2. I'm actually talking about the game, Rise of the Lyric. The game was god awful due to several bugs and glitch. Some people on Youtube even posted videos that they beat the entire game IN ONE HOUR thanks to a glitch by bringing up the start menu continuously.

I don't know about the cartoon but I'll watch some episodes if I have the time.

    3. Not to sound harsh, but what potential was there for Boom? It was an unnecessary spin-off series developed by a brand new company basically to start a toy-line. Boom was on death row as soon as it was announced.

    4. Okay so I've seen all the episodes of Sonic Boom so far (which is 4) and......yeah they are kinda bad. -__-

  6. Pat the NES Punk, who I'm not particularly a fan of, is doing a far superior retrospective of the games industry and is doing so in much fewer and more concise parts than Bores. I don't know if any attempt at documentary-making, even on Youtube, has contained as much padding and pointlessness at such a glacial rate as Bores's series. It's pitiful.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I actually had to stop the video and rub my head when he not only called the Klingon ship a warbird, but also told Spock to fire weapons.

As a massive Star Trek geek, I can say that yes, the 2009 and 2011 movies referred to them as "warbirds," but that is an error. A forgivable one, especially since they're an alternate universe, but an error nonetheless. ROMULANS use Warbirds, Klingons use Bird-of-Prey or, considering the ship it's SUPPOSED to resemble, a D-7 battlecruiser or the upgraded K'Tinga class. Now, that's just being pedantic as a Star Trek nerd, but even a casual fan should know that SPOCK IS THE FRIGGIN' SCIENCE OFFICER. GAAAAAAAH.

Also got to love how Chris does the equivalent of Winter Gaming with the 2600 controller by moving it around like crazy. Let me tell you - I never owned a 2600. Hell, I only played an NES at a friend's house, so I only RECENTLY got to play on a 2600 for the first time at a convention. And not being used to it? I had to friggin' wrench that joystick around to make it move and I sure as hell wasn't moving it back and forth in the way he was.

Also got to love how he FIRST correctly refers to them as switches and then every other time calls them buttons. Pedantic again, I know, but it's annoying because there are SO MANY errors like that. And what's with him showing the insertion of the Olympics game THREE TIMES? Did he think we'd forget what the cartridge looked like? It's already sloppily edited by putting the game in with the name very clear and visible and then saying the name of the game AFTERWARDS like we're incapable of reading.

This is just wild speculation on my part, but I think the reason he finally did this video after 2 and a half years is, once again, the AVGN Movie. It brought up the specter of Atari and the video game crash in people's minds again so he was just trying to capitalize on that. I don't blame him for wanting to, but this is so haphazardly done.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To make the reference even more pointless, the Bird-of-Prey was not even part of the Star Trek universe until Star Trek 3. The ship the enemies in the game resemble was always called a Klingon Battlecruiser. Just watch the opening of The Wrath of Kahn.

Yes having Spock fire weapons is completely moronic, it was always either Chekov or Sulu that did that. Spock's station faces the back of the bridge! The only way he could have been more wrong would to have asked McCoy to fire weapons!

  10. Might I suggest adding this to the Year End list of worst IG moments for 2014?

Here's my (updated) list of worst Bores moments this year:

    7.) Too. Much. Skylanders.

6.) Waiting almost 2 3/4 years for the next installment of History of Video Games... and not even giving a damn

5.) Bores at E3... for the 6th year in a row

4.) The "epic" finale of his story arc, complete with pointless cameos and Archfiend clearly yelling "FUCK YOU, AVGN!"

3.) Bores being more interested in ghost hunting crap than video games (or anything else of substance)

2.) Insulting JewWario after his suicide and shoving religious bullcrap down people's throats

1.) Bores' nearly 2/3 of an hour-length video response to the Archfiend of him making false accusations about James Rolfe in a poor attempt to dethrone him and get people to sympathize with him... and somehow, it worked with MrWeenieProductions, One176, RandomDCE, BigAl2k6, among many others. Including Archifend and Asalieri, of course. It really baffles me how so many people are pleading with the Internet to stop criticizing Bores and that he's a "nice guy" (yeah, right) and how AVGN gets treated like he's the equivalent of Hitler these days, going by the majority of comments on that video.

    3. Ooh, good point. And I just realized... there's others. So, to update:

10.) Doing nothing for weeks, yet still gets money

9.) The Stick of Truth review

8.) Creating a separate channel for Skylanders, only to abandon it entirely. He should take lessons from Gamester81-- he has separate channels for video games, nostalgic stuff, and Star Wars stuff.

And that's to add to the seven I already listed as worst moments of 2014 for Bores!

  12. I just wanted to point out another omission regarding the Atari 2600. The model released in 1977 had six switches on the front of the console. Bores shows the model that has four switches in front and two in the back- that model was released in 1980.

In fact, when going over the console Bores only mentions four switches (including one in the back) even though both versions had six switches. I just found it weird how Bores referenced the year 1977 while showing the 1980 revision.

Chalk that one up to lack of research from Bores, I guess.

You're only making yourselves look like immature assholes who are making terrible attempts to make Chris give up. 3. The fact that he never improved a bit from 2007 and in his arrogance doesn't think he had to improve at all is his biggest flaw and the basic point of this blog.

Every reviewer I've ever watched that has gone on for lengthy periods has improved markedly from their beginnings to now. Whether it is the AVGN, NC, Spoony, JonTron, Linkara, Phelous, The Cinema Snob, etc. and whether or not you personally like their work since their early days to now they all show marked improvements. The fact that Bores got in on the early wave of nostalgia reviewers shows that he at least might have saw something big brewing but he has been stuck on neutral ever since.

  18. So, anyone been following that 3DS hacking thing? This game, Cubic Ninja, apparently has some sort of back-door thing that would allow people to use homebrew software, and now this game that was met with lukewarm reviews and relegation to bargain bins is now going for over $60-$100 at both online and in-person retailers alike. Crazy, huh?

I actually managed to snag a copy for $10 the very instant I read about it, and it's already been shipped. Seems some people are coming across dodgy sellers trying to get the sales cancelled so they can sell the game for higher prices.

The exploit in question will be revealed in the coming days. What do you guys think about all that?

    1. Sounds interesting. But can't homebrew software already be played on flash carts intended for piracy?
Homebrew brings a lot of crap games (and for more advanced consoles, security risks), but it's cool what gems you can find out there.

      Delete
    2. The thing about this particular exploit is that unlike flashcards, which can easily be stopped with a system update, and then you have to wait for a while before the flashcard developers find another workaround, this exploit doesn't seem to focus on the same thing those do, and as a result could always be used without any kind of downtime.

To be honest, you may wanna just look it up yourself. I admit I'm probably not explaining it that well.

    2. Ehhhhhh. Should we really keep supporting TGWTG? I'm still bitter about Todd trying to use a dead friend of his to make a point.

    3. Todd did what now? This about JewWario?

    4. Yeah. It is.

Todd in the Shadows made some very public comments about an issue that he felt strongly about, and tried to use JewWario's death as a tool to win an argument.

So, in conclusion, Todd is just as inconsiderate as bores himself.

    2. He still did it, still thought it was a reasonable thing to do.

    3. He apologized in the most backhanded and cunty manner. He inferred beliefs of someone who is no longer with us and came across like he didn't actually knew what he was talking about. Todd knew less about JW than anyone else did.

    4. No, he did not. He recognized that what he did was wrong and admitted responsibility in doing something he should not have.

And who the hell are YOU to say one of his friends didn't know anything about him? And I am speaking as someone who DID know Justin pretty damn well.

I do not get this kind of unrelenting attitude to someone who has APOLOGIZED for a wrongdoing. What the hell do you WANT? He did something wrong, recognized he did something wrong, apologized for it, and you won't let it go! This ain't Bores we're talking about. It's a guy who thought people were disrespecting the memory of a friend and inadvertently did the same thing. It sure as hell isn't "He's going to hell for committing suicide" like Bores said, who STILL HASN'T APOLOGIZED FOR IT.

    5. He thought that he was able to shame and degrade his followers into admitting a fault by putting words in a dead mans mouth. His 'apology' amounted to him insisting that he was completely justified in doing so, because he 'knew' Justin.

You forget that others knew him as well.

    6. Yes. I'm one of them.

But I'm not going to make this about Justin. I'm keeping this about Todd, who I REPEAT: admitted he was wrong to do so.

    7. I've read his apology. It wasn't sincere. It read like he was only putting it out there to try and get people off his back about being a horrible friend.

It's really telling about how, in his apology, his rant about how his point was still relevant was longer and went into much more detail than the apology itself. That's what Todd actually cares about: that is opinion isn't discredited because of some unrelated drama.

    8. Having talked to the guy while he was working on it and before that, I can assure you it was friggin' sincere.

  25. The history part of these videos doesn't make a lick of sense. He has barely covered the launch titles for the 2600.

There is nothing that can justify the slow and stunted pace of this history series. The big question for me is why can't he handle the 2600 in its entirety then go over the arcade for the same period at the same time. Come on so many of the titles are ports!

  26. Do you really want to watch Bores cover 12 years of games at once? Though he would probably rush through the Atari 2600's library in about 30 minutes.

  27. Dan, I think you should start another blog called Gilgar13vids Sucks since Bores's main channel doesn't have any variety anymore due to the fact he uploads MONTHS later, he retired from the Irate Gamer, Skylanders.etc Oh and i'm new in Blogger so i don't is it possible that you can make more than one blog.

  28. Does he not realize the video game INDUSTRY is outpacing him?! It's taken him how long to get through the first generation? More than 5 years at least. Video game generations last about 5 years. Proof positive he will never finish at the rate he's going, it'll be physically impossible to! Unless the entire industry shatters at some point (much worse than the 1983 "crash"), or something.
