Sooo Much Shilling! Selling Out is Fun!

Funny thing happened on Monday. Chris unlisted his Tales of Zestiria video and let his entire channel see the incompetence. Yet, there were people that said it was good. Are standards that low? Are people willing to forgive a “review” where he only plays a few hours of a game that can go over 60? Barely scratching the surface or going into the more complex mechanics? Are people THIS dumb?
So… I asked them. I asked them in the comments why they find this acceptable, and to my surprise, the comment went through. Yeah, I wasn’t blocked. When it went through, I added a line telling Bores that if he deletes this, he is only proving my point. Unsurprisingly, he deleted it the first chance he got. Thankfully, I screen capped it.

I left a few more comments, most of them gone now. You can see them on this Imgur page provided by Hunter the Hunter.
Safe to say that Chris still refuses to listen to any form of criticism. He’d rather stay in his little bubble, sticking his fingers in his ears and blame everything on “haters” or “stupid kids”. Ironic since the latter is the majority of his audience… He really should watch the South Park episode on the dangers of “safe spaces”.

On Thursday he posted something he hasn’t done in a while. A contest! *sighs* Fuuuuuck.
Yeah, it’s another “Pick Me”, but with Bores pulling an extra scummy move.

This “contest” involves the site Leaptrade.com. Didn’t he already do something involving this site? *looks through archives* He did! He “reviewed” the site back in April. But… it’s not on his channel anymore. Why is he deleting so many videos lately? Is there something he wants to hide? I can understand deleting the Leonard Nimoy tribute since it would expose him as an inconsiderate asshole, but the others like the LootCrate video and the Leaptrade “review” were boring and harmless. I will never understand his thought process…

Anyway, this new “contest” requires you to sign up for Leaptrade using his specific referral code then to write “Pick Me” in the comments. What’s the prize? A free game. What game? He doesn’t say! For all you know, he’ll be giving out Sonic Boom or Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5, something really shitty.
So what’s the “scummy move”? See, when a Leaptrade member refers someone to the site and gets them to sign up, they get a $5 credit. … YEP, this whole “contest” is nothing more than “Give me money you stupid kids!”
Though, I don’t think Bores thought this through. In order for him to get the $5 credit, not only do they have to sign up with the referral link, but also trade in a game. My informant found this info and I believe Bores only saw “$5 if you refer friends” and is exploiting his subscribers in the hopes of getting lots of credits. Hopefully the parents of the kids don’t let them trade in their games…

Yeah… even Chris’ claim of “giving back to the fans” has underhanded ideals to it. How is nobody noticing this but me?

No video Friday, but we’ve got one today on Saturday. How strange.
It’s a “review” of Star Wars Battlefront. Not sent to him by GotGame, but by Vidfall.com, which he mentioned multiple times in various “I got a new amiibo” videos. Well, one of them now, I know there was one where he bragged about getting Olimar but that seems to be gone as well. Seriously, what are you doing Chris?
As a reminder, Vidfall is some site where you watch videos to get “deals”. It seems kind of shady to be honest, perfect for Bores who can only get deals with shady companies since his name is mud.

Onto the video!
But first, the description.
For once, he actually says this is a sponsored video. About fucking time. Not like the video will be any good but at least he finally learned to list that something is sponsored.
“Today I'm looking at the controversial Star Wars Battlefront” Controversial? What’s controversial about it? The only thing I saw people get angry about was the shitty season pass (“Buy this $60 game, and now buy this $50 DLC pre-order with little knowledge about what you’ll get”) but the game itself has been mostly mixed.
The description also mentions he’s working on the next History of Video Games. So 3-4 months after the last one. Considering how he’ll probably only cover one topic again, this shit will never be finished.

Wait, I just realized. Battlefront isn’t on PS3 or 360, it’s only PS4, Xbone and PC. Meaning… Bores finally has a next gen console! Why did it take this long? Shouldn’t someone who has a job “reviewing” games have the next gen consoles around launch?

No timestamps today. Video is unscripted.

We open to IG in his room and he holds up a PS4 copy of the game. So he’s got a PS4 now, could have used that before but apparently ghosts are more important or something. Then he goes on a long spiel about Vidfall and how great they are. Chris, Chris, you save the commercial for the end of the video. When JonTron or The Completionist or Peanut Butter Gamer have a sponsored video, they save the commercial for the end (they also put way more effort into their videos but that’s because they actually care about what they do, unlike Bores)

Also, he mentions in the description that the captured footage was corrupted. Why didn’t you just use the PS4 Share feature? Are you not aware it exists?

“I’ve been hearing a lot of bad things about this game” That reason likely being “It’s crap compared to Battlefront 2” but since this is Bores, he has no idea what that actually is.
He says he likes, it claims there’s “not much story”. Maybe you should play past the tutorial since the footage makes it clear he barely played it. You have to stop doing that.
“This one is all about the online experience” That you never talk about. Why do people take you seriously again?
“You can see it’s trying to rival things like Call of Duty and Modern Warfare” That’s the same fucking franchise! You could have at least said “Call of Duty and Battlefield” … Wait, that would mean knowing what Battlefield is. My mistake.
“Set in the Star Wars universe” What gave that away?
He calls it a first person shooter. There’s a guy on the screen, it’s third-person. Learn the difference.
“Of course you can play from… uh, there’s all different kind of characters you can play from” Thanks for giving away this video isn’t scripted! You can’t do unscripted work Chris! Also, “play from”. Don’t you mean “play as”? I never hear anyone say “In Super Smash Bros, you can play from Mario or Link”

Anyway, he brings up how you can play as Darth Vader, or Palpatine or Boba Fett. Not quite, those only work in special dedicated modes or events. Most of the time you’re playing as the character you create, who he calls a “random rebel soldier”. Yeah, it’s clear he barely played this. He doesn’t even seem to tackle the online modes.

He mentions the vehicles, says he liked the Speeder Bikes, blah blah blah. Graphics graphics graphics. Chris’ old crutch when it’s clear he has no idea what to say, just talk about the graphics.
“If you’re a Call of Duty fan” Ugggggh.
He brings up he was playing the Deluxe Edition and comments that he doesn’t know the difference between that and the regular version. THEN RESEARCH IT YOU FUCKING LAZY FUCK! For the record, the Deluxe Edition just has a few extra weapons and emotes. Not really worth the extra $10.
And we end on more Vidfall shilling. You can tell Chris wants sweet deals like Audible or Crunchyroll, but won’t get them because he’s a lazy inconsiderate asshole.

Not much to say about this one… it’s nothing.

I really should get started on the Year End List.

  1. Why would anyone, including IG fans, care what Chris thinks about any modern game that's not Nintendo, especially when he just now got a PS4? If anyone wants to know whether a triple A game is good or not, they just go to Angry Joe. Whether you like him or not, you have to admit that he's at least way more honest than IGN (the views even show it too).

  2. This is something that just occurred to me. How do we even know Chris actually played the game or that he got a PS4 at all? It didn't look like he was filming the TV this time (so he could have stolen the footage again), the video never showed him playing the game, and if he did finally get the PS4, he would have announced that he finally got one or would have shown it off, knowing how much he loves to stroke his ego. And let's be honest, all the shit he says in this review doesn't necessarily reflect the thoughts of someone who's actually played the game, and it sounds more like basic shit anyone could find out by researching the game. I don't know, just seems suspicious.

    2. I have that same feeling, too. When Chris says, "I don't know the difference between the Deluxe Edition and the Regular version", that kind of proves that he didn't play the game. He stole someone else's footage.

  4. I honestly thought resorting to shill book reviews would be at the top of my personal list of worst IG moments in 2015. Now I am not sure if Bookgate or ebegging for referral credits is sleazier. I am leaning towards the latter since Chris claimed this was for the fans. We still have over two weeks left in this calendar year; Chris Bores may still outdo himself.

On a side note, am I the only one who thought it odd that he said he had so much fun chasing rebels of a Speeder bike yet never showed footage of him successfully killing an opponent character while riding those bikes?

    4. My instinct: Respectful distance is the best move. Formal condolences are for people who know the bereaved better and are explicitly friendly; I don't feel I know Bores well enough to guess whether he'd take the condolences 100% in the spirit they were offered, or whether he might misread something done with the best of intentions (we've discussed his social-awareness skills at length before).

As long as we don't act flippantly about his sad/tragic circumstances, I think it reflects sufficiently well on this blog.

  7. Kenobi's beard, this is terrible. Personally, I'm waiting a bit till there's more titles I'm interested in on PS4 (my usual threshold before buying a new console is at least five); since I gather the game runs better on Xbox One (my brother is probably getting one soon, so I'm eager to have him by my side when he downloads the Jakku DLC). Also, I agree that South Park episode did a pretty good job of capturing the whole mindset of painting a target on one's back; then complaining when the arrows start flying. So, with six days left till The Force Awakens; I'm going back to my college tradition of The Star Wars Holiday Special (which I find oddly entertaining in its badness, in a similar manner to The Room or Plan 9 From Outer Space).

  9. Sorry to sound nitpicky, Dan, but isn't the Wii U in the same generation of consoles as the PS4 and Xbox One? And Bores has reviewed Wii U games before.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm not criticizing Batdan, but many people don't consider the WiiU a true eighth generation console, mostly due to being a bit weaker than the competitors. It's sad, since the WiiU is honestly not bad, not to mention that its games can be pretty fun.
      ^-^

      Delete
    2. Those people are delusional, and don't even understand how console generations work.

Besides, Wii U is up and away the best eigth gen console anyway.

      Delete
    3. Evweything on PS4 and Xbone feels like it's either just a first person shooter or an open world game. Only Nintendo has true variety anymore.

      Delete
    4. While the Wii U was pretty poorly marketed and has pretty lousy 3rd party support, I mostly blame its failure on Nintendo's massive bias towards the 3DS. I mean, we're never going to see real Fire Emblem, real Pokemon, or real Animal Crossing games on home consoles again because of how much portable technology is advancing. Plus, they're bringing over games and features originally for the Wii U (like Hyrule Warriors, amiibo support, and to an extent, the Mega Man Legacy Collection) to the 3DS like it deserves it. Hell, Smash is the Wii U's biggest game right now, but it doesn't even have it to itself, and casual gamers who don't consider/understand the differences in the tech between both systems or the differences between both versions of the game will just get the 3DS version because it's cheaper. And yes, I know that the 3DS is more popular in Japan because people are always travelling and don't have shit for time, but that hasn't stopped Sony, another Japanese video game company, from focusing on the PS4 and basically saying "fuck all" to the Vita (seriously, a company can't have decent balance between both their home consoles and portable systems?). While the Wii U does already have many problems on its own that drive more people towards the PS4 or Xbone, I still believe that it could have been saved had Nintendo believed in it more and treated it more fairly.

      Delete
    5. I think it is silly to disregard the Wiig U as an eight generation console considering the fact that it released during the eighth generation and all. Generations are determined by release dates, not system specifications.

      Delete
    6. The Wiig U. The system of choice for those suffering male pattern baldness!!

    8. Hunter, Pokemon will and was NEVER intended for a home console, I'm not sure why you'd even bring that up. Game Freaks themselves said they would never make a home console version.

your rant makes little sense. Nintendo's been favoring the Wii U for a while, hell they get DS and GBA games, what sense does that make...and outside of the upcoming Red/Blue releases on the VC, the 3DS VC is dead, and that's out the mouth of one of the companies (Natsume I think).

Wii U was in bad spot to begin with, all because of the Wii. Nintendo was stupid to actually think everyone who bought a Wii would buy a Wii U, or that third party devs would magically flock to the console.

      Delete
    9. Oh, well excuse me for not wording that correctly. A main series Pokemon game will never come to home consoles despite fans' demand for it, and we will never see new Fire Emblem or Animal Crossing releases on home console ever again. There, happy now? And sure GameFreak SAID they'd never make a home console Pokemon game, but Egoraptor also said he'd never become a Let's Player, and he ended up completely giving up on animating to become just that.

And while the reason I stated for the Wii U's failure may not be THE major reason for it's failure, or even a major reason at all, I'm sorry, what? Nintendo is FAVORING the Wii U right now? Really? Is that why the 3DS is getting 2 new Fire Emblem games in addition to the one it already has, a real Animal Crossing game in addition to a spinoff, Kid Icarus, Mega Man Legacy Collection, a port of the original Xenoblade Chronicles, and the game the Wii U should have had to itself (Smash), while the Wii U just gets Amiibo Festival, that weird FE crossover game with Shin Megami Tensei, and no Xenoblade Chronicles on its virtual console that could easily be ported to Wii U?

      Delete
    10. 3DS also killed the Ice Climbers.

      Delete
    11. I very much have to disagree with the sentiment that "only the Wii U has true variety." Saying that it feels like there's only FPS and Open-World games is just as inaccurate as saying Nintendo only has platformers. Games like BlazBlue, Deception 4, Final Fantasy, Gravity Rush, Guilty Gear, Ni no Kuni, Yakuza, J-Stars, Dragon Quest Heroes, Dragon Quest Builders, Mortal Kombat, Persona, Resident Evil, Until Dawn, and of course Tales, present plenty of variety. And that's without talking about racers that I keep forgetting about because I honestly don't care for them. Need for Speed just came out, Gran Turismo's on the way, Forza 6 is out. There's variety there if you just look.

      Delete
    12. Well, I guess what I'm trying to say is that most people and news coverage only focus on FPS and Open-World games.

  11. Also, BatDan, I think it is worth mentioning that Chris provided misleading information about the credit that Lea parade offers for games. In the video he said you would more than likely get $69 for Arkham Knight on PS4 but that was the buy price. A person who trades in that version of the game only gets $48. Chris traded in games per his own words so he must have been aware of the difference between buy and sell prices.

    2. Expectations are much higher for a feature-length film than a web video. People pay actual money and set aside a couple of hours to watch it, and there's genuine hope for something approaching Hollywood quality. The length of time we waited for the film only adds to the sense of expectation- compare Star Wars Episode I. For all the cool stuff James achieved in the movie, I can imagine someone who donated big for the Indiegogo fundraiser, and counted the days until release, feeling a little cheated by the panicked-crowd scenes achieved with a handful of people running in place against a greenscreen.

      Delete
    3. Movie was way too long. The ideas were interesting, execution was pretty meh.

I commend James for being able to fulfill a life long dream, but at the same time, it could've been tweaked and refined. Jokes fell flat too.

Now if the film were something akin to the last Board James season, I think that would've been better...it seems like Board James is James at his most creative.

    5. It wasn't bad. I do think James' Board James S2 storyline would've made for a better movie, though.

Though I will say the AVGN movie is 1,000,000x better than Chris Bores' rushed-out mess of season 4 that he considers a movie. Yet, that somehow gets more praise...

    6. Who the hell gives Rise of Red more praise than AVGN:TM? It can't be anybody who's seen both.

      Delete
    7. It's at least thirty minutes too long, the script is unecessarily convoluted (not to mention James went a little overboard about how great the character is), many jokes fall flat and it feels way cheaper than what the budget it had could have afforded for.
That said, when the movie works, it works, when it doesn't it's incredibly boring.
Overall, it is a decent effort, 5/10.

    8. @Harrod - I think the reason might be because of the people who thought James Rolfe was "e-begging" because Bores, Archfiend, and Asalieri said so around the time of the whole Cheetahmen II "scandal". At least, that's what I heard...

  15. Off topic, but why do so many people hate on the Nostalgia Critic's new videos (or anything from 2013 onward). I'm not kidding, a lot of the comments on his newer videos are things like "NC sucks now" and junk like that. I personally think his newer videos are just as good, if not better than his older stuff. They really show how much he's evolved over the years. Honestly, I think people just hate his stuff now just because it's different than it used to be. Kind of like modern South Park (which, for the record, I think is a lot better than old South Park).

Now no disrespect to anyone here on the spectrum, but I believe Chris here might suffer something far worse than any of us may or may not have. The symptoms are clearly there in his videos. It's the same reason why Roy was included in Melee. I mean Fire Emblem is one of Nintendo's most popular and best selling series in Japan so naturally, they'll get a lot of representation.

Sure, people are upset that more characters from the ballot weren't chosen, but we got Bayonetta. She wasn't the number one pick, but she was the highest rated choice that Nintendo could negotiate. I personally love that she's getting included. An M rated character joining the mascot brawler of the most successful family oriented company is a great, bold, and interesting move!

At the end of the day, these are optional characters. If you don't like 'em, don't buy 'em. Let the people who are happy be happy.

    7. To be honest, I never expected any of the characters I mentioned to get in. Any character that didn't originate in a video game is out, characters from indie games will most likely alienate too many people, Banjo-Kazooie and the rest of Rare's non-Donkey Kong stuff is owned by Microsoft, Sakurai already said that the 3DS couldn't handle the Ice Climbers' mechanics (with Duck Hunt serving as a replacement/compromise), and Rayman already has a trophy in the game.

    8. Mewtwo and Lucas already had trophies in the game before becoming DLC.

    9. You can be happy with Corrin if you want, that still doesn't stop me from wishing they developed another character.

I love Fire Emblem, I own all the games, but Corrin was a huge disappointment. You can't really jump from 2 reps in the previous game to 6 without some complaints of oversaturation, especially when we already got a FE character as DLC, and ESPECIALLY when this new one is a blatant advertisement.

This could have been a great opportunity to introduce a new franchise into Smash but nope. Here's a FE Avatar character. Again.

    10. If Sakurai was going to put in a character that wasn't Wolf, he should have done Inkling. That shit is a no-brainer. You get a new, unique character, a character from a recent release, AND a character representing a whole new series within Smash. Splatoon is hot right now, it would have made more sense than yet another Fire Emblem character.

    11. And ironically, Roy in Melee was also a blatant advertisement for the latest Fire Emblem game at the time Melee came out, and they ended up bringing him back as DLC anyway instead of Wolf. I'm sorry, but I strongly feel that Wolf should have returned over Lucas and Roy. Not only is he less of a clone than either of them are, but he's also actually been in multiple games that have all seen international releases. Also, we NEED more villains in Smash, and one from a series that has an upcoming game for the Wii U would make perfect sense.

    12. I don't like saying we "need" more of something in Smash. I'd rather they don't add in characters to fill some quota and add characters that deserve it. That's why I don't like Corrin's addition, I don't think he's deserved it.

I do agree, though, that Wolf should have returned.

    13. Sakurai is a dickweed to being honest, he is basically like this:

A Stubborn Japanese man that is too much into the shinagimi sentiment or whatever its called.

    2. Also, we kind of got a Shrek Smash Bros. clone a while ago. It was OK; with decent gameplay for its time and the actors from the films reprising their roles. It may not have had the impressive visuals of the films (well, for a film about a hideous ogre anyway); but I kind of liked how the humor fit the mold of the first two films (which I love, I didn't like the third one as much; and I haven't seen the fourth one yet.).

  21. Bayonetta. Wasn't expecting that. Even so; I'm quite looking forward to playing as the title character from one of Platinum Games' best titles. Enchanted hair attacks; shoe guns, twin pistols: it's a match made in heaven, even if Palutena makes it clear that's not where she comes from. Also, the Cloud DLC is going live soon. I can imagine the servers will be experiencing traffic that, as The Social Network put it; "is unusual for halftime at the Super Bowl." This is coming from a man who doesn't have the game yet; but will probably be getting it very soon.

  22. I typed in "Irate Gamer Sells Out" on the search bar on Youtube and guess what turns up as the first matches?

His channel, and his other official videos, go ahead and try it

  23. It's after midnight Ohio time, and nothing. Schedule slip at rock bottom is still only my second worst moment of the year; topped by Ghost Hunting 2.0 and Chris' ill-fated attempts to salvage it. Well, I got my ticket to Episode VII Friday evening; I'll check back with you all then. Until that time: Super Mystery Dungeon!

  24. Off topic: Hideo Kojima has finally left Konami.

    http://www.theverge.com/2015/12/16/10276750/hideo-kojima-ps4-exclusive

He has also relaunched Kojima Productions as an independent studio. I really hope the nightmare between Kojima and Konami is finally over and that Kojima can fully recover from the ordeal.

    1. I'm quite looking forward to seeing what Kojima can do on his own; and potentially interested in getting a PS4 in the near future (after my Wii U and my brother's XB1) to play his first of many new IPs. Still interested in Phantom Pain; but first I plan on getting the 25th anniversary Metal Gear collection for my PS3 so I'll understand what's going on.

  27. Good lord he can't even do simple arithmetic. He says that there are 1200% more buttons on the controller than on Atari's. Clearly, he only took into account the numeric keypad buttons, and forgot about the side buttons. In that case, there are still only 1100% more buttons! If you don't see why, consider that if the Intellivion's controller had one button, it would have 0% more buttons than Atari's. If the Intellivion's controller had two buttons, it would have 100% more buttons, etc.

Why didn't he just say 12 times as many buttons? This is not the correct context to use a percentage to describe a numeric difference.

    1. That spinning disc (I have no idea why Mattel used that instead of a joystick) acts as a button, too. So it actually has 17x the button count of the 2600 controller. :D

    2. I would forgive the one-button discrepancy, but watch again. Wait, don't: He says twelve THOUSAND percent more buttons. That'd be over a hundred buttons.

    3. This is the same man who can't tell a 6 from a 9; and would rather spend HD reversionings of his videos on stupid Family Guy sketches than correct mistakes he made in the past. By the Force, we're going to all be retired before he gets to the Genesis VS Super Nintendo portion.

  28. semi off topic but looks like Retoware's Video Game Years' "final" episode has aired.

In four years they went from 1977 - 1989.

Meanwhile, Chris started 6 years ago and barely made it out of the 1970's

    1. Unless some of the Atari/Intellivision cartridges he showed were from the '80s, he still isn't out of the 70s. Intellivision was introduced in '79.

That's kind of why I included all the Artistic License History of Video Games entries in one slot in my tentative worst moments; given how it's been six years since he started this slog (including HD reversionings with the same bullshit as the SD videos).

  31. Wow. The Intellivision game where you climb a building to save a woman from an ape who's throwing barrels at you... "Shouldn't this game be called King Kong?" How can you get that close and still miss so wide?

He calls Reversi checkers; it's Othello.

And right at the end, he doubles down on the Atari Space Invaders confusion from the last chapter.
