Is This the End of Irate Gamer?

I know I just made a post, but Chris finally broke radio silence and dropped a bomb today on Facebook.

"I've been getting questions about the next IG Episode. The character is pretty much semi-retired at this point since the channel didn't see a big enough growth last year. I haven't had enough free time to edit episodes lately that require many man hours so I'm not sure when the next episode will be completed. Thanks for continuing to support the show, I love all the fans!"

 Well... this could be real.

Now I know he mentioned retirement before, and then 24 hours later said "Turns out I'm sticking around haha!" since it was a clear attempt at fishing for praise. "No don't go Chris we love you" and all that. However, this sounds much more serious. The red flag is "the channel didn't see a big enough growth last year", which I imagine was his experimental "three videos a week" phase that only ended up driving people away with terrible style changes (CRAZY videos) and severe selling out.
This does coincide with my discovery that he's no longer part of a Multi-Channel Network (according to Socialblade).

By the way, this tells me his "technical difficulties" excuse was a lie. Knew it!

This could also mean that he's not completely done. Just that IG episodes will be even slower than usual (which would be impressive considering the "storyline" years saw like 2-3 IG episodes a year). We'll likely see a lot more stupid toy videos as those don't take long to edit. Though I hope this means he's done with all the selling out, no more terrible tech reviews or art books.

Does this mean I'm done? No. Just that output will be a lot slower to match his. There's still his possible second book (which I doubt will really happen) and his alleged Hardcore Pawn appearance (if that hasn't been cancelled). As he says, the episode he was working will eventually come out, and I will cover that.

If Chris goes through with a full retirement instead of a "semi" one... I called it. Chris, you never tried. You didn't want to try. You never accepted help, you turned away countless people, you tried to take the easy way without realizing that trends change and people change and people get older. You stayed stagnant relying on the same tired jokes and ideas, even when you tried to do your own thing to avoid Angry Video Game Nerd comparisons, you relied on pointless references and random humor. You still showed amateur knowledge of games, complaining about things that are standard, and your attempt to bash beloved classics only showed you had no clue what you were doing. The last year also had you jump on trends far too late, and you didn't understand what made those trends work. I've had many former fans of yours come to me, realizing that you were really only funny when they were 11 or 12 years old, but as they grew older they realized that you weren't funny at all, even on nostalgia. Speaking of, you're approaching 9 years on YouTube (not counting Y2B2006), old enough to be considered "internet nostalgic" and what do you have to show for it? Your channel hasn't even come close to 200k subs. Channels started much later managed to skyrocket past you (Markiplier and The Completionist began in 2012, JonTron in 2010) and you never tried to adapt. When you tried to make a separate Skylanders channel amidst complaints that you were releasing too many videos about them, you lasted a week and came back to your regular channel crying that "YouTube is too different". Not even trying to learn what's changed, or ask someone for help. I imagine Guru Larry, who had spent YEARS trying to help you, would have offered tips. But you never listened, you never took criticism. You hid behind sock accounts to deflect criticism (the most notable being your "mother"), you had your friend Eric Allen do the same early on (Eric, contact me, I've got questions), and after years of avoiding the most common criticism you received, you spoke out about it and instead threw everyone under the bus. You didn't really apologize, you played the victim while crying that James Rolfe is a big bad bully that purposely sabotaged you (without showing ANY evidence of this). You fucked up Chris, you tried to make easy money by stealing an idea, for a hobby you clearly have no clue about, and it got way too big and way over your head and you were forced to keep going, resulting in the position you're in now. Do you even have genuine fans at this point? Even DarkSydePhil somehow has those, and he's in a worse position than you.

I hope you're proud of yourself Chris. Enjoy your fucking ghosts.

Again, there might be more videos so this is not a goodbye post. But it will likely be a while before I post again.

  1. Chris and IG could have been something more. If he didn't screw up all those countless times, he wouldn't be the laughingstock in the gaming community like he is today.

I'm actually waiting for a Chris Bores documentary. If a Chris-Chan documentary can be done, then why not Chris?

  2. I had a feeling Chris's Internet career would decay far enough to hit this point sooner or later. It's kind of tragic, really.

  3. 1. Isn't this his 3rd semi retirement?
    2. He only says the IG character is in semi retirement. I'm sure he will milk the tech/toy/book thing (can't imagine how long companies would wanna send him shit if he doesn't do IG anymore so not sure how long he could ride that gravy train), I would expect the next video to have him mentioning his "semi retirement of IG", or maybe even a video dedicated to it. I am very sure he will be back with IG. This is probably just another ruse to stir up attention, or if he is legitimately too busy to do all that grueling time consuming editing it probably won't be for long.

  4. Is he going to make another 40-minute video demonizing James Rolfe?

    1. What's the point of him doing that? If anything, it would make him lose even more fans because it will prove that he was lying the first time and that he is just making an innocent internet celebrity look bad.

  5. I'm confused. I just checked Bores' channel, the most recent video is IG Tech Review - Archer Speakers, Headphones, 1byone light first look. It was posted a week ago (march 15). I check his channel frequently (yes sick I know) and I haven't seen this until now. Can anyone explain?

And HOVG, ... i don't know, since season 5 it's part of The Irate Gamer Season 5, so that is still alive, but the playstation 1 is planned for Episode 87 in the year 2065 so there is a long way ahead

  9. As much as we all have joked about it throughout the years, this point in time was eventually going to come. It was inevitable that, with the way Bores was handling his channel and releasing videos that didn't appeal to his fanbase, he would be forced to put the Irate Gamer character to pasture.
Even if he isn't permanently done yet, Bores is on bought time nowadays. Though there will always be a fanbase willing to support him (like DarkSydePhil), a time will come when he will have to leave YouTube and find a job elsewhere that offers better pay and other beneficial incentives (no, I don't believe his ghost-hunting shtick will be enough to support him).
Let's just hope that, whenever that time comes, Bores will have found something he is truly passionate for and enjoys doing. I know we here find entertainment by seeing just how bad his videos and work ethic can be, but Bores is, in the end, a human being just like all of us. Therefore, I at least want him to succeed at something in life that can be considered a positive achievement.

  12. People thought Uwe Boll was a goner when he released that charming video last year. He's still making movies, but they're hardly even known. Chris will probably turn out the same way. Still making videos, but so unheard of that he's hardly even considered infamous anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Well, that was unexpected; and by unexpected I mean totally expected. He's been hemorrhaging views and subscribers for years; and that "55th most subscribed" glory can only go so far when other "caustic critic" personae have seen much change over the years, and Chris has shown a perpetual inability/unwillingness to evolve. When he's experimented; it's been in the wrong areas. His career began leeching off you-know-who; it's devolved from there. Well, I just got back from Batman V Superman; guess I'll see what happens tomorrow. If Chris is serious; I hope whatever IG review he's working on is as spectacularly bad as his "movie." One that would make Batman and Robin look like The Dark Knight (by the way, I put BVS at better than the former, not as good as the latter). Until then-Pokkén Tournament!

  16. Off topic, but what are your guys' thoughts on the Batman vs. Superman movie?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I personally thought it was better than Batman and Robin; but not as good as The Dark Knight Trilogy or the MCU films it was trying to emulate. I acknowledge that many of the decisions Zack makes as a storyteller are often controversial; but I can't deny he's got a hell of an eye for spectacle. I also noticed that many scenes had lines and shots echoing stories like The Death and Return of Superman and The Dark Knight Returns; two of my favorite stories featuring these characters. I say, bring on Suicide Squad; Wonder Woman and Justice League.

      Delete
    2. I hate that movie. It perfectly represents everything that's wrong with Hollywood blockbusters from the last few years: incoherent plot, obnoxious score, endless sequel set-ups.

And have made yourself so seperated from the community that you will never recover
I don't even believe that this is the end for you
This is probably just you giving an excuse for your terrible turn out
That or perhaps you just want to finally do your stupid ghost movie even tho you spent YOUR ENTIRE LIFE SAVINGS and getting nothing out of it

  18. Let me guess... Chris had an opportunity with an MCN so long as his views met a certain threshold. That would have been the motivation behind his surprise return to YouTube and three videos a week schedule. In an effort to find content he resorted to ridiculous videos like his paper tablecloth greenscreen and buying cheap tech crappie from shill websites.

When his views predictably dropped the network let him go. After the failure of his book Chris is now forced to find another way to earn money. Would that be a fair guess?

He seems to be too much of anew attention whore to quietly disappear. I suspect he will be back to crash and burn in a spectacular way.

  21. If Chris wanted to stay relevant, he should have read gaming news everyday, learn about the newest trends in gaming, learn how the gaming industry works and also the lastest gaming technology and indie games. He should also have made friends with other gaming reviewers like Jontron and the Completionist rather than his former detractors who don't even care about gaming in the first place. He should think about new and upcoming games instead of toys like Skylanders and Lego Dimensions.

And look what happens when he chose to do none of that. Congrats Bores, after nine years on Youtube, you still haven't evolved.

    1. All of which shows that Chris never really had any sort of vision or plan for the Irate Gamer show. He jumped on a bandwagon.

He can claim that James sabotaged him all he wants but when he woke up and realized he gained about 11,000 subscribers almost overnight he really should have sat down and planned how he was going to use that momentum.

Instead he handled his show very haphazardly and took on too much work for himself. James at least has friends like Mike, Bootsy, Ryan, etc to make content when James is too busy to post.

  22. Off topic.

We should all congratulate Digital Homicide for taking over Konami as the new number 1 worst gaming company in the world. The fact that they are able to sue Jim Sterling for 'ruining their lives' shows that the future of the video gaming is going to be destroyed. If they succeed (which I highly doubt they will), it will create a chain reaction. More and more gaming companies can sue video game critics for giving them negative scores and opinions.

So again, congratulations Digital Homicide. The future of gaming is dead because of you. It's truly both hilarious and pathetic that you guys spend more time, money and effort in suing someone rather than using them to make a good video game.

  28. I say that it has been a really haphazard run for him.

From the stigma of being an AVGN rip-off that he can't get rid of, I would give him credit that he sort of evolve his show on the things he actually likes doing (even though most of the topics he did on flopped; ghost hunting is a fad, his toys reviews are not as interesting, etc). The tech reviews, I will leave it out, since he was just selling out to those companies.

To side track. I feel that angry reviewing is also coming to a slowdown/halt, since I think even the AVGN might be growing tired of it. He has moved on to different style of videos, while the normal AVGN-type of vids are becoming more sparse.

Sigh.. If only you take the advice of Larry and the countless number of people that tries to help you out, Chris.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with what you're saying about angry reviewing winding down.

I mean, I'm currently thinking of AVGN as a good character that is predominantly historic. The 2014 movie was his one big hit over the past five years. There is a feeling that maybe that is it for the Nerd.

But, I could be wrong, since there is a new AVGN episode coming out within the next couple of months, and maybe it might breath fresh energy into the character for least another few years.

      I'm just saying.

      Delete
    2. Yep, I still go to Cinemassacre now and then. AVGN reviews are still good, but you know, the aforementioned sparseness.

Or he's simply running out of bad games to review. ;)

      Delete
    3. Well, here's a list of bad games that AVGN hasn't reviewed yet:

      Gilligan's Island
      Bebe's Kids
      Barney's Hide and Seek
      Ultraman
      James Bond Jr.
      Captain Novolin
      Road Runner's Death Valley Rally
      Space Ace
      The Pagemaster
      Rise of the Robots
      Time Killers
      Strider Returns
      The Adventures of Mighty Max
      Ballz 3D
      HammerLock Wrestling
      Warlock

    5. That may be, but you never know, AVGN just might review it anyway.

    6. Here's a bunch more bad games that AVGN should review:

      Sword of Sodan
      Techno Cop
      Awesome Possum
      Heavy Nova
      Fantasia
      Stormlord
      Nightmare Circus
      Heavy Shreddin'

    7. He's just having fun now playing games. I'm not disappointed the output of Nerd videos have slowed down significantly, especially when the games aren't games he may not necessarily be familiar with.

His James & Mike Videos aren't too bad for a dose of Cinemassarce. Board James was a nice derivation too.

    8. James admitted on Twitter that he's nearly done on a new AVGN episode, not sure what it will be about, just thought I'd throw this out there.
Meanwhile Chris hasn't added anything new to his twitter since the Start of the Month, another example of Chris not interacting with his fans

      Delete
    9. That's exactly what I told everyone, and I'm betting that the new AVGN episode is gonna involve time travel, where AVGN travels back to 2007 or 2008 and meets his younger self and prepares him for the storms which lie ahead.

  33. Hello, all! Long-time reader, first-time, etc, etc. Firstly, kudos, on such an amusing, yet always incisive blog. You have hit the nail on the noggin countless times: Chris Bores is waaaaay more than just a shoddy knock-off of James Rolfe, et al.

Something about Bores has always bothered me, however: what exactly interests him? Bandwagon jumping? Does he actually like anything? Or is he simply a hollow husk of a human, incapable of independent thought and reason, guided only by what seems to be popular (and, ergo, profitable) at any given time? If you rocked on down to his gaffe for a party (Christ!), what would his conversation be like? Self-absorbed, yet yawningly empty? If you said, "Do you like so-and-so?", would he even be able to give a genuine, heartfelt answer? Or would he simply say, "Hell, yeah!", if so-and-so was popular, or, "Shit, no!", if so-and-so wasn't? And then misquote some clapped-out quotes and/or memes? (I imagine he still says, "Wazzup!!!", completely oblivious to the fact that it's about as fresh as a decade-old bottle of Eau de Surströmming.)

It’s a shame he never really embraced the whole "good bad movie" reviewing thing, because watching him tear into Tommy Wiseau would have been absolutely fucking hilarious. Pots calling kettles racially connotative epithets spring to mind, there.

At one point, they even took down his video again RIGHT after it went back up. What the heck, YouTube? Why do you let this crap happen?

I'm just bring this up as a warning that terrible companies will go to extremes to get videos taken down (Mr. Enter actually advised his fans to warn people about this). In this case, going out of their way to abuse a broken copyright system IN A DIFFERENT COUNTRY. Be very careful guys.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZAScOOsHjo

I don't know, it seems to mostly be an anti-Nostalgia Critic video than an WTFU, but it seems he's clueless to what WTFU is about seeing that he thinks WTFU is just "a stupid, crybaby movement".

Unfortunately, I sort of agree that NC spoils the movies in his reviews. Don't know if NC ever warns about spoilers in his reviews.

  38. I wish I could say he's quitting, but it sounds like an attempt to get whatever followers he has left to rush to his support. You know the kind: won't say anything until you announce you're quitting and they rush you to say "NO! Don't quit! We love your show!"

He'd been bleeding followers for years and the "AVGN is a big, fat poopypants asshole" video exacerbated the diaspora. It made him look weak and played up a victim mentality.

His decline from a crappy Nerd copycat in 2007/2008 to abysmal reviewer period in the present is analogous to the increased usage of greenscreen.

In his Y2B2006 videos and his early IG videos (BACK TO THE FUTURE, INDIANA JONES) he actually used real sets: he shot in his living room, went walking around in some woods, peddled into a dumpster at a bunch of condos...

By the time of PREDATOR, he never left his house. Making his studio look like jungle by moving around a plastic ficus, greenscreening a desert, and taking a BRAK SHOW approach by using stock backgrounds for cities and such.

In many ways, it seems to be indicative of an implied isolation from the outside world. He claims that there aren't many game reviewers left, but is unaware of people like ProJared, Peanut Butter Gamer, and JonTron -- only Angry reviewing seems to be dying out.

...Am I pulling a Guptill and overanalyzing this to the point of looking stupid?

  50. I can't believe no one else has pointed this out, but the fact that Chris is now playing retro games on an HD LCD TV is really bad. They are really laggy. He should be using a standard-definition CRT, but of course he doesn't know this. There is this thing called a Framemeister that helps reduce lag, but he probably doesn't know it exists.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah. There's probably at least 5 frames of input lag on that TV with standard-definition consoles while CRTs don't lag at all (unless you count a few nanoseconds). Of course, it doesn't excuse how much he sucks. I connected my NES to a laggy LCD HDTV that I could notice tons of lag on to see if he really sucks or it's the lag, and I could still easily beat Great Tiger and Piston Honda 2 (the later bosses are impossible without a CRT, though, but the earlier bosses give a long enough timing window to be playable even with all the lag).

      Delete
    2. why does it matter though? The guy is known to use emulators and steal footage. No one probably pointed it out because it's irrelevant.

      Delete
    3. I know he uses emulators, but it still looks bad because he's trying to make it seem like he's playing on the original hardware. Just the fact that he thinks playing NES connected directly to an LCD HDTV is a good idea is yet another giveaway to the fact that not only is he using emulators, but he's also not a gamer.

      Delete
    4. Look, there is a lot of dirty stuff Bores does, playing on a LCD is not one of them.

  52. I know my question will probably be ignored since, well... I'm me...

But I've seen a few of you bring up Boring Man using an emulator. The only issue there seems to be with that is that when he uses one it seems to be in an effort to cheat rather than using one period. A friend of mine asks because he's not sure if you need to own a cartridge in order to do a game review. Is this true?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. you really don't need the cart.

      Delete
    2. A lot of reviewers use an actual cart on original hardware. I'm sure a lot of them use emulators, or cheap NOAC consoles, or Retrons, or Pitendos.

Besides the question of an authentic experience (no emulator is 100% accurate, especially when they have features to improve the experience), there's the legal and moral questions.

Legally, I think you can use an emulator if you own the game and ripped the ROM yourself, but it’s been a while since I read up on it so that might not be true.

Morally, it's a bit of a gray area. I think most people don't have a problem with emulating things that have been out of print and off store shelves for a long time. I've seen "Super Metroid" go for $200+ loose (seeing it for $70 on eBay now), but wether it's $3 or $300, Nintendo won't see one penny of your flea market or eBay purchase.

However, the cart isn't the only way to legally acquire these games from the legal copyright owner. "Super Metroid" is on the Virtual Console for $8.

So, I think the problems that people have with Bores using emulation is:

      1) Cheating, as you mentioned.
      2) Not playing on an old CRT doesn’t give the authentic experience so it proves he’s not a gamer (I disagree. Lot’s of “real gamers” don’t keep a CRT around, myself included).
      3) Piracy. Sometimes he does show the cart as a prop, so maybe he does legally own all the games.

      Delete
    3. Correct. An emulator is legal. However, the RIM must be ripped from your own cartridge and must not be downloaded from an unauthorized source.

My issue about using CRTs has nothing to do with "real gamers". Playing NES games on a modern TV can introduce significant lag. Try playing Mike Tyson's Punch-Out with a loss of 5 frames per second. Providing game play footage with this deficiency is not presenting an authentic experience to the viewers and as we have seen a large chunk of his viewership is very young and would have no idea.

      Delete
    4. Honestly, one thing that Bores does right is the quality of the video recording. In his Back to the Future review, he used emulation and it showed. His later reviews, however, used a legitimate capture device from his TV screen. Considering how lazy Bores is, this is a major plus.

      Delete
  53. A lot of people keep on suggesting to make a Top Ten Worst IG Moments of All Time if Chris does decide to call it quits. I have a better idea. How about multiple top ten lists? He continue making his series on Youtube but since then, he started slandering AVGN, members of TGWTG and other well known Internet celebrities just because he's jealous of them being more famous and earning more money than him.

The most disgusting thing is that he kept accusing AVGN and other Internet reviewers as money greedy scumbags for using sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo and kept defending himself that even though he's a poor man, he would still never rip people's money off when in reality, he does go to casinos and gamble his money off. Even worse is that he enjoys slandering Jewwario and when the reviewer tragically died in 2014, he DARE posted a video to give condolences to the late reviewer. That's right, this man who constantly bullies Jewwario, is now trying to express sorrow for him upon his death.
