Chris Starts a New Series to Look at Boxes Full of Crap

I'm beginning to think Chris doesn't know the meaning of the word "retired". Three videos in a week? Pick a story and stick with it.

Anyway, this video was so dumb, I actually had to make a separate post. Impressive how Chris can pack quite a bit of stupidity in a little over three minutes.

Chris has started a new "series", this one covering various pop culture subscription boxes like Loot Crate. I'm impressed there's a thriving market for this. Calling it "Box Wars". How original...
Say, why did you delete your first Loot Crate video Chris? Why are you deleting so many videos? Explain yourself you censor-happy doofus.
Oh and the video is also a contest. Back into old habits I see, making every other video a contest. Guaranteed comment spam!

Starting the video. Not going to time it because it's so short.

"Alright pop culture fans" Cringey, but at least he's not saying gamers.
Declares that this is a new segment. We shall see...
It has a stupid intro. How long did that take Chris?
"And since there's so many pop culture box of goodies services out there" So many = three. Okay there's probably more but he only covered three in this.
By the way, this isn't like his other videos. This has editing, a lot of it. Possibly scripted too. How come THIS gets the editing attention?

He starts with the latest Loot Crate.
"And they're probably the most popular of them ALL" What was with that weird inflection on "all"? It sounded like he was trying to sing.
"This month's (theme) is puzzles and things of all that nature" ... Okay maybe he didn't script this.
First item is a t-shirt to "honor the death of David Bowie". Odd choice of words, I would have gone with "pay tribute". I don't know, it just sounds off.
"Featuring his likeness from the movie Labber-nith" I'm sorry what? You mean Labyrinth right? This isn't even an accent thing. How are you so bad at English?
Second item is a pair of Harry Potter socks listing Voldemort's Horcruxes.
"And I thought those two movies SUCKED" Another sentence ending on an on odd emphasis. He's referring to the Deathly Hallows. Care to explain why Bores? Also, he still doesn't seem aware that Harry Potter is based on a book...
Third item is a Legend of Zelda pin (in the shape of the Hylian Shield)
Fourth item is a poster. Bores attempts a joke saying it's a pirate periscope. Weaaak.
It's an Uncharted 4 poster. "Which will be coming out soon" Did you film this a week ago? Uncharted 4 has been out for two days now. Then again, I don't expect Bores to keep up with current gaming events. His bubble won't allow it.
Fifth item is a tooth-shaped flask from the History Channel series Vikings.
EDIT: Actually, it's a bull horn. Thanks to MacDragard for the correction.
Final item is an ice mold that allows you to create a D&D 20-sided die. That just seems dumb.

He moves onto 1Up Box
The theme is "miniatures". Which he says he in a deep booming voice for some reason.
First item is a shirt. This one has Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach and a Despicable Me Minion on top of a giant strawberry shortcake. ... This is really stupid. This is like a dumb deviantArt drawing. Why this crossover?
Second is a Kirby bouncy ball.
Third is an Ant-Man "drawl-string" backpack. That looks more like a bag than a backpack.
Fourth is a Despicable Me Minion decal. Not even in color.
Fifth is a Yoshi coaster. ... Why?
Final item is a Baby Mario plushie.
Bores then reveals that 1Up Box send him a second box of the same thing. He believes it's so he can get a Baby Luigi or Baby Peach plushie to "collect them all", but he just got another Baby Mario.  Then he puts a filter on, adds a scare chord, and makes a face. What's this supposed to mean? That it's "freaky" there's two Baby Marios? Please, it's not as freaky as a few Mario Kart titles where somehow Mario & Baby Mario co-exist in the same timeline. Same with Luigi, Peach, Daisy, and Rosalina.
Anyway because this is a duplicate, this is the thing being given away for the "Pick Me". Meh...

Finally onto Super Geek Box
The theme is "destiny".
First item is an Ash Ketchum hat. Which Bores claims to be really excited over. You're not a Pokemon fan! I know you're not!
Second item is a t-shirt combining Star Wars and Pokemon. Darth Vader as the trainer and Boba Fett as Bulbasaur. ... Bobasaur? Ugggggh
Third item is a bagged Marvel bobble-head. Bores got Ant-Man. Odd that there's two Ant-Man items in this video.
Fourth item is a Teenage Mutant Ninja Squirtle key-chain. Either his lighting is bad or that Squirtle looks more green than blue.
Fifth item is a "Transformers" poster featuring "SGB-01 Ultramus Prime". Okay so I looked this up and I can't find ANYTHING about an "Ultramus Prime". It looks more like a Gundam. Is it something Super Geek Box made just for this? They're not sponsored by Hasbro so this must be their way of getting around copyright. How does Bores not notice that it's clearly not Optimus Prime? It looks like Masami Obari should be upgrading it for an OVA.
The sixth and seventh items are a pair of decals with their off-brand Autobot and Decepticon logos. What are these? What are you trying to pull Super Geek Box?
Final item is a Star Wars Lightsaber lanyard. Bores tries to make this look "cool", but I'm just shaking my head in disappointment.

The video concludes with him actually picking a winner. Bores actually having to be decisive? The skies are falling!
He declares Super Geek Box the best of the month. Really? With the stupid Star Wars Pokemon shirt, the knock-off Transformers and the dumb lanyard?
The reason it wins is all the Pokemon stuff. You're not a fan! Quit trying to act like you are! I know your fans are a bunch of little kids that would probably believe that, but you don't do a good job showing that you know anything about the franchise outside of a few basic details.
He gives out a few extra awards.
Coolest shirt if the "Labber-nith" shirt from Loot Crate.
Coolest item is the Ash Ketchum hat from Super Geek Box (again with trying to be Poke-fan)
Lamest item is the Viking flask. He looks so confused by it. It's a bull horn you dumbass. How do you not see this? Also, how is THIS the lamest item? What about the colorless Minion decal, or the Yoshi coaster, or the Lightsaber lanyard,  or that awful knock-off Transformers stuff? You have shit taste!

Soooo, how long until Bores abandons this series? One could be optimistic and say "after this one", but this video will probably do "okay" because it's also a contest, and those are prime for view & comment spamming. Want some proof? The tech review he posted on Monday has 440 comments. The terrible phone app on Tuesday? At least 57 (who knows how many he's deleted). Chris knows what he's doing, but this won't last him long. People will grow even more tired of him and his poor content and his shilling.
He calls this a review in the title, but it's barely one. He just lists the items and then says "best and worst" at the end. That's not a review. Then again, he has a really bad habit of calling things that aren't reviews "reviews" *cough*E3*cough*.
Hope this junkfest is worth the $60 a month you're paying for this Chris.

  1. You'd think the first box service that the Irate Gamer would subscribe to would be IndieBox

He has a tendency to promote garbage ("Busker Boss", "American Chilly", "The Irate Gamer Game") and bash good games, it's probably better he stays away from Indie Box.

    1. That is pretty awesome.
But I doubt Bores would find use for that. It's all PC games and he's all "I don't play PC" (even though you've spotted him on Steam, which is still weird).

  2. Am I the only one getting sick and tired of Chris acting like he's a fan of things that he clearly knows nothing about? "The 'Labber-nith' shirt is the best." Chris, you obviously have never seen that movie. Don't even try to act like you're a fan of it. I really hope Chris never talks about Labyrinth in his 80s series. That is, if he ever bothers to make one again.

  3. At this point, I'm assuming Chris gave up his channel and just uses it to entertain his kids now (given his even more immature and stupid behavior on screen), because whats more entertaining than "watching daddy act stupid on the Internet?"

    ReplyDelete
  4. Dan, I have to seriously correct you. The Viking item is a bull horn; not a tooth. Being a huge fan of the show and Viking history in general, I just can't let that slide. In all fairness, it's not a flask either, as Chris has incorrectly labeled it.

Also, I think you should have addressed how he advertised his latest episode of the Irate Gamer show as if it came out a couple days ago and not almost a month ago. First of all, by now whoever watches the Irate Gamer show would have seen it already. Second, it sounds like he needs to promote the IG show because obviously this new series won't hold enough weight.

  5. I put in hours and hours breeding perfect Pokemon with the perfect moves, IV's, EV's, Natures and Abilities, some of which include Lucario, two Charizards, Aegislash, Blaziken, Gardevoir, Sceptile, Gengar, Weavile, Ferrothorn, Gliscor, Skarmory, Bisharp, Breloom, Azumarill, Talonflame, Volcarona, a bunch of other Pokemon with Mega Evolutions, and pretty much every pseudo-legendary including the genderless Metagross and the brutal Hydreigon that evolves from Zweilous at level 64. What the fuck have you raised in the game, Chris?

    1. I doubt he even knows how prominent the metagame is. All this bullshit makes me want to sic my various favorites on him. My first Lucario in X, Falcor, can start with a Bone Rush to the head and an Aura Sphere in the groin. My first 6IV Pikachu, Satoru Iwata, can follow with an Electro Ball up the ass. The idea of him being a Pokemon fan is laughable as someone who's preordering Sun and Moon very soon. Now, I think I'll go hit myself over the head with my Blu-ray copy of the first three movies.

      Delete
    2. No offense dude, but really? Bone Rush on Lucario when you can just teach it Earthquake? And while Aura Sphere is a good move, most Lucarios run a physical set, especially if you're going to mega evolve it. Mine has all perfect IV's (except in Special Attack, which it never uses), its hidden ability Justified (the only ability Lucario can have that's actually useful before it mega evolves), a jolly nature, max EV's in Attack and Speed, and it knows the moves Swords Dance, Close Combat, Iron Tail, and Bullet Punch (which it can only get as an egg move from Hitmoncham).

      Delete
    3. Call it personal preference. Don't get me wrong, those are good tactics; but I'm still new to the metagame, and I tend to primarily play for recreation and fun. Still, it was a fucking abysmal video. Even his 12-year-old fanboys could probably beat Chris in battle, which I highly doubt he even plays the games. Since he was doing that ghost bullshit during the X and Y launch, I don't expect to see him around for Sun and Moon. You have your playstyle, and I have mine. Even so, there was a collective headdesk from all my fandom here.

Some friends of mine are planning a documentary, called Mother to Earth, on the first Earthbound game, Mother (or Earthbound Beginnings), specifically how it was made and how it was eventually released outside of Japan.

The Kickstarter is only barely half-way to its' goal and only has three days left, so if any of you here have some extra dosh lying around, it'd be appreciated if you could pitch in! If you can't back it, simply spreading the word on Twitter or however else would also be good! My friends and I would really appreciate it! The link is here:

"I really wanted to hate this Cinemassacre GHOSTBUSTERS review but I'm such a fan of noisy, thick-saliva swallowing it won my heart."

Some Cinemassacre fans took this as an unwarranted attack and have reply-tweeted their disapproval. Patton responds to a few but is mainly keeping back from fanning any flames.

      Delete
    2. A whole bunch of people keep leaving comments like "Patton's wife will be making a cameo in the new Ghostbusters." Wow. That's...freaking low. Even if Patton is attacking Cinemassacre, disgusting comments like that are totally uncalled for. Just shows that Cinemassacre fans can be just as horrible as Chris' fans.

    3. @Silent Spring I respects James' opinion. If he don't want to review it, that's totally fine. That won't stop me from watching The Ghostbusters reboot, because I want to know if the movie is good or not by watching it when it came out. Who knows, maybe it was as bad as people speculated, maybe it's not.

      Delete
    4. I wonder if anyone from Cinemassacre (particularly Mike or Bootsy, James doesn't want to be involved in drama) will respond to what its fans have done to Patton? They'd probably tell them to leave him alone.

More like the journalists who waste their time writing such articles are the ones that are more stupid. And thankfully, all the people in the comments say what pile of garbage the articles were.

"By modernizing the script, you're making it dated!"

Besides, people think we hate the movie solely because of a female cast? That's not even a problem! The problem is everything else (for instance, Winston in the original was a scientist like the others, creating an equality. What does the token minority in this movie bring if she's not a scientist? That just brings in implications). Plus, the writing is just dreadful!

Sorry about the novel. Just had to get this out!

  26. If you go back and watch IG's earlier reviews, like Where's Waldo and Goonies 2.....they're actually not that bad. They're no masterpieces, but they certainly are WAY better than the reviews bashing good games and with the really stupid references and cameos. You can see why some of us used to watch IG in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think his reviews of Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Aladdin, and Super Mario Bros. 2 are just as bad as they've always been (it's hard, so it sucks! Wahhh!!). Not to mention that those games are actual good games. He also reviewed Contra, Tetris, and Ghosts and Gobins, which are also good games. Heck, Goonies 2 is also a pretty good game. Bashing good games is something that Chris has done since the beginning. He just recently decided to only bash classics and not even try to look for games he thinks are "bad." Probably because it's clear that he doesn't know what makes a game bad or good, so he finds it safer to bash classics.

      Delete
    2. Where's Waldo was probably IG's best game review. There were legitimate points throughout the review, which is rare for Chris. He even reviewed the SNES follow-up, which is uncommon for him to convert multiple games in one review. There were issues with the episode (plagiarism from the AVGN, Super Mario World for the NES, etc) but had IG made more reviews like that, he probably would have improved.

      Delete
    3. In both reviews, he actually addresses the problems he had with the controls. Nowadays, he doesn't even complain about the game's controls anymore in any of his later reviews.

  27. So, Alan Young, the voice of Scrooge McDuck, died yesterday. You want to bet that Bores is going to come out with a video about it in which he gushes about DuckTales and pretends he's a super-mega fan, enables ads, and tells his 12-year-old viewers to subscribe to his channel at the end?

That being said, I really hope Bores doesn't even ATTEMPT to try making a heartfelt tribute to him-- like Hunter said, he'd probably pretend to be a fan and profit off Young's death just like he did with Nimoy. Though... maybe we could be proven wrong and Bores surprises us.

FOR EXAMPLE! The petting minigame is gone. But you can see any female cavalier's panties and very near bare ass at any given moment. And it's not even subtle. It's like they just forget about armored pants or something. Ass just RIGHT there.

And several of the supports had mentions of murder and whatnot taken out. I think a support that had Beruka talking with someone about how many people they've helped shuffle off the mortal coil was removed. BUT they did not even try to censor a good portion of Peri's support dialogue, wherein she describes, in some vivid detail, how she'd murder her own servants for the slightest provocation.

I'm not even done and we've got censored chaste minigames removed but ass shots are literally everywhere, and dialogue of murder removed but apparently the player character who is a legitimately sociopathic serial killer is all uncut? What.

  29. Off topic, but does anyone remember that show Nick Arcade that aired on Nickelodeon in the 90s? That was one of my favorite shows back in the day. It was always exciting to see what games the players play. I remember Super Ghouls and Ghosts, Sonic The Hedgehog, And Battletoads were among the games they had on there.

    1. I thought Asa was against James after the whole "e-begging" incident. Good for him to not have a vitriol on James for once regarding this. :D

Perhaps Bores will do the same thing. Or, maybe I'm being too optimistic here and he'll continue to slander him because James was in a negative situation. Or maybe Chris won't respond at all. (Better he not respond at all than to slander James again.)

  32. Funny how Crash Course's video game history series is already past the 1983 game crash and it only started a few months ago. Is there any more proof that Bores is made fail?

  33. Alright, I want to call attention to this thing you said in BOTH of your Yo! Noid recaps (this is the redux wording):
"5:01 - 5:07: “And the game isn’t really that hard. If you die, that means you suck and are bad at it.” … Excuse me one moment. *runs 40 miles away* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! *runs back*
You hypocritical son of a bitch. You complained when a game was too hard FAR too many times, and you pull this shit? I don’t care if he’s “selling out” and making the game look good, that does not excuse his hypocrisy! Fuck you!"

Remember in AVGN's Nightmare on Elm Street review where he was forced by Jason to make the game look good? I doubt you complained then. You're the hypocrite here. Of course, you just want to make him look bad.

I'm not saying Chris Bores doesn't suck; I'm just asking you to correct this.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In James' FRIDAY THE 13TH review, you could see James wanting to talk shit about the game multiple times throughout the video, but every time, he was stopped by Jason threatening his life. Though, he finally builds up enough rage to kill Jason himself and put in a final word about the game sucking. Bores, however, does not make it clear in the end that the game is bad.

      Delete
    2. I'm wondering, Benjamin, when was Jason in the Nightmare on Elm Street review?

That out of the way, my next question is, can you not differentiate between what's happening as a part of a story, and someone actually being a hypocrite?

      Delete
    3. I thought it was meant to be some form
of satirical joke in response to people knocking him for is SMB2 review. I mean, notice how he photoshopped Yo Noid onto a top three games list. It was a poor attempt at humor but that's the way I saw it.

      Delete
    4. Alright, I called it the wrong name. That was a stupid mistake.

Hunter the Hunter, Chris made it pretty clear that he thought the game was bad in the end; what does him saying he won't endorse the game because it sucks, then saying "Yo Noid, yo fuck yourself" while flipping it off, and then throwing it off screen mean to you?

Josh, that was clearly part of the story. He had to say good things about the game because he sold out. It was supposed to be a joke. Did you think he actually sold out to Dominoes to promote a nearly 20-year-old game in real life?

MacDragard is the only one who gets it.

      Delete
    5. Yo!Noid isn't bad, he just whined that the game was hard. Just like with most of his reviews. Chris never actually reviews games, all he does is reaches for complaints and whines that the game is hard. Not to mention that he's terrible at all the games he plays. So saying "If you die, than you suckered and you're bad at it" is pure hypocrisy.

James, on the other hand, actually makes legit statements and points. The audience could easily tell that the games he reviews are bad. So when he's being forced to make the game look good, people can tell that's not what he really means.

      Delete
    6. Oh, and the reason he started praising Yo!Noid was to do that awful selling out joke. It wasn't funny and you legitimately want to smack him. Kind of different than being threatened by a killer, am I right?

      Delete
    7. I'm aware that Chris sucks at video games and reviews. Even if the joke wasn't funny (but not fucking offensive like you A-Loggers claim), he still wasn't being serious.

      Delete
    8. Chris only reviewed Yo! Noid to sell his t-shirts, not actually do a review. Yo! Noid is not a bad game and does not deserve this kind of review. Sure it's difficult, but that doesn't make it bad. You should look up Batdan's redux recap of Bores' Contra review for more information on "Real difficulty vs. Fake difficulty."

      Delete
    9. Also, what makes the selling out joke offensive is that the entire purpose of that video WAS to sell out. He was trying to sell his t-shirts, not review a game. He had NO right to joke about selling out in a video where he was doing that exact same thing. Not to mention that the only purpose of the Irate Gamer in the first place was to make money off of an idea that wasn't his. Even if Chris wasn't being serious about the selling out joke, it's still offensive due to what he stands for.

    4. The "jumping off a roof" comment was in response to "all-female cast"

He completely 180'd after the first trailer came out. The brief clip of Slimer was enough to charge his nostalgia-boner. This is why he fails as a critic, he always lets nostalgia cloud his judgement. This is a 30-something man that liked Pixels.

      Delete
    5. He only talked about the new Ghostbusters on FB, saying things like "Since it's Ghostbusters, it will make money" like he was passing it off, but he actually said the humor was great. Probably because it's similar to the humor in his show.

  39. So, Rob Walker just posted this on Facebook:

"So the next movie we're reviewing a couple weeks from now managed to earn an instant place in my Top 10 Worst Things I've Ever Had to Sit Through for The Nostalgia Critic.

    Seriously.

I felt dirty just watching it.

Like I had betrayed my generation, this generation, and the next.

Doug kind of enjoyed it in a "So earth shatteringly bad, it's at least ironically hilarious" sort of way. But I couldn't even appreciate it on that level.

I think the most insidious thing about it is the way it just doesn't completely misrepresent what my generation was about. It's not the way it completely misrepresents what an entire gender or age group is all about. But it also completely misrepresents what Millennials are about. Oh, make no mistake, there are things about Millennials that drive me nuts. But I don't pretend my generation is perfect either. We all have blood on our hands. But THIS movie? GOD. It made me want to punch every last damn Millennial I see in the face.

    And that's NOT FAIR.

That's a movie that willfully, cynically, tried to say "See? We get it. We're hip. We all know what you're REALLY about. Now munch on the dewy fields of our pathetic pandering, Sheeple! MUNCH!!!"

I have faith in humanity that this is not true. That an entire generation can't be dumbed down into one simple marketing formula designed to separate kids from their wallets. That Millennials -- despite all their generational quirks -- are so much BETTER than this.

That it tanked at the box office gives me hope. Faith, perhaps, wins out.

It's what got me through this film...

... that and the bottle of bourbon that Doug thinks he's hidden so well in his pantry.

    God I needed that."
