Chris' Lack of Activity Explained: Meet Minecraft Puppet Steve

One of the biggest questions surrounding Chris Bores is "what is he doing instead of making videos"? There will often be long gaps where he doesn't post any meaningful content. Just loads and loads of filler. Hell the last two months has been nothing but boxes, crappy phone apps, and Chinese tech items. I figured he had a job but couldn't figure out what it could be. His ghost hunting stints are usually for the Halloween season (despite what he claims, it's clearly a Halloween attraction and not serious work) and not a full time thing.

Welp, thanks to an e-mail (for their sake, their identity will remain anonymous), I have learned what he has been doing since at least January.

Welcome to the Minecraft Puppet Steve channel.

Where do I begin?
Just watching one video, and it reeks of Chris Bores. Not only is it obviously his voice, but so much of it is the same. The editing, the style of humor, the visual effects, he even uses the same royalty-free music tracks (one video has the song he plays in his 80's videos). The only difference is that he's not Chris Bores or the Irate Gamer, he's a puppet based on the Minecraft player character Steve. Amazing how he looks more like a puppet Chris Bores rather than Steve. Yes I know you can customize your Minecraft skin, but Steve is one of the two defaults (along with Alex).

So does Chris play Minecraft on this channel? NOPE! He talks about toys.
The first couple videos actually don't have Minecraft characters, but rather two different puppets called Marty and Muffin. They talk about Minions Mega Bloks and Gravity Falls figures.
Then Puppet Steve appears and talks about Minecraft toys for four straight videos. Rather, three are about toys, and one is where he insults the Enderman. Including calling him an "evil-hearted booger face". ... Yeaaah I get the feeling this is for like 8 year olds. But even then I would show them way better stuff.

He stops looking at Minecraft stuff at that point, and just does whatever. Starting with a reaction video to the trailer for Sausage Party. Uhhh I thought this was meant to be a channel for kids? I think Steve is meant to be a kid because one line in the video is "My mommy won't let me see this" but honestly it's hard to say.
This channel isn't safe from boxes either, the next video has him looking at 1UpBox. Good lord Chris this is sad.
And hey, did you miss his Skylanders, amiibo and Lego Dimensions videos? (Nooo) Well he's got them on this channel now. One about the latest Skyalnders Happy Meal toys ... seriously? Two about (then) recent Lego Dimensions releases, and one about amiibo. All with the same lack of detail you know Chris for.

But hey, he's not all about Toys-to-Life games, he's also about regular toys. Including Five Nights at Freddy's figures (man, Scott Cawthon must be swimming in money now), Secret Life of Pets, Teen Titans Go (barf) and his most recent video about Ghostbusters. It's probably the closest we're going to get to hearing his thoughts on the new all-female team.

Say, did you miss IG's "CRAZY" reviews? (Noooooooo) Don't worry, they're back on this channel! Well, at least one "CRAZY" movie review. For Zootopia. I don't think Chris paid attention to the movie, or even saw it. He never goes over the deeper issues involving racism and political corruption, instead claiming it's all about "growing up to be whatever you want" while claiming he's in the movie, that everyone dies, and the Enderman is the villain. WHERE'S THE JOKE?!

And I know some of you wanted to see Chris cover Pokemon Go, and he does on this channel! Three videos, though one is a music video made for Minecraft Jams. No idea. The other two make it pretty damn clear Chris knows nothing about Pokemon. There's even a "list joke" where he can catch "Caterpie, Weedle, and Donald Trump" Ugggggh (it was Shellder by the way). You would think Chris would have done this on his bigger channel but apparently that would have been too much work and taken time away from PRECIOUS BOXES.

Right now, Minecraft Puppet Steve has over 8,400 subscribers. Most of them likely came from Minecraft Jams (who have over 367k). Not too horrid having started in January, but something is amiss with the views. Let's look at his most popular video "LEGO Dimensions Slimer Ghostbusters Action Figure Unboxing Review Puppet Steve Minecraft". Fucking word salad title.
It has nearly 300k views, which is shocking considering his small sub count. Even more shocking considering the video only has 416 overall ratings (382 Likes, 34 Dislikes) and only 17 comments. I suspect there's foul play abound with the view counts, making Puppet Steve look more popular than he really is. Something he did before on his SkylanderC channel. Even when trying something new, he has to cheat.

I'll give him one thing, this is original. Unless there's a Minecraft-related puppet show I'm unaware of, this is far more original than Irate Gamer. But that doesn't mean it's good. I understand this is for kids, but kids deserve faaaaar better than this. Some of the stuff he covered on this channel I would rather show to kids. Gravity Falls, Zootopia, Secret Life of Pets, Ghostbusters (the original and the cartoon). Other stuff like the DC Animated Universe, The Lego Movie, Adventure Time, Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Power Rangers, Yo-kai Watch, Marvel Cinematic Universe (yeah I know not the most kid-friendly, but the merch says otherwise), even Steven Universe as controversial as that is. I've heard good things about The Loud House. There's a ton of other things I would show kids, I would not subject them to this random garbage.

Now, there's one big elephant in the room that needs to be addressed. Why are you hiding this Chris? My source claims Chris is attempting to distance himself from the Irate Gamer name. You're not doing a good job of that Chris.
Why not tell your fans? Surely some of them would like to know what the fuck you're doing these days. They yell at you because you're not making actual content, just shitty box videos and app videos. If you tell them "I'm working on puppet stuff", then they would likely understand you. But no, you're hiding this. Hell, you're hiding the name "Chris Bores". The videos don't end with "Created by Chris Bores", just a "please subscribe" endslate.
If you're no longer doing actual Irate Gamer content just to focus on this, TELL YOUR FANS! Don't jerk them around with "I'm thinking of retiring guys, I might do a Kickstarter maybe I don't know" and "I'm on break, totally on break". I mean, you went on about how you don't have the time and money to do Irate Gamer, and yet you seem to have plenty of time and money to do this puppet show. BE HONEST WITH PEOPLE! Enough with the lies, especially when you can't even keep your story straight.

I am impressed he kept this hidden since January, and I'm sure he's been fearing the day I would learn about it. I'm sure you've got a plan of some kind right Chris?

And I see you posted another video on your IG channel, another god damn box. *looks through* He calls Tetris on Game Boy rare... in case you needed another sign that Bores has no idea what he's talking about. Which by the way is very prevalent in the Puppet Steve videos. Especially in the Five Nights at Freddy's one.

  2. Those who hide are afraid.

Also speaks volumes that proud Chris Bores who pretends to be his own proud doting mother is in actual fact ashamed of his past work and too scared to bring his existing audience along to see his new projects. Imagine if Rolfe had hidden Board James....but then again, why would he? He's not done anything to be ashamed of.

  3. Credit where due: He's doing more videos than we thought. There's a lot to unpack here, but I clicked on his chronologically-first video, Marty & the Muffin w/LEGO Minions, and my first thought was Marty's a decent-looking puppet- I doubt he built it. My first guess is that its one of those design-your-own Muppets that I think FAO Schwarz sold for a while. And the puppetry's OK- I didn't close the window in disgust. Interesting how on the Muffin, Bores can approximate that "li'l guy" voice that was in every 70s and 80s cartoon- Frank Welker, I think?

But there's a lot more to watch and criticize. And I see by the thumbnails that the Minecraft puppet is coming to dominate the channel.

Do you suppose he failed to promote the channel because he wanted to have one thing that we didn't tear to shreds?

    1. Honestly, Bores should stop doing YouTube videos and just become a puppeteer. He shouldn't go near writing the scripts or anything else, but there are many TV/movie/theater companies who are looking for decent puppeteers (a friend of mine tried it out a year ago, though he recently gave me all his puppets because he didn't need them anymore).

      Delete
    2. He's only using puppets to hide his true self. There is no point for him to be a puppeteer.

    3. minions are mega bloks, not lego, at least lego is not making the figure fiddly to put together

  5. Trying to watch the first video he uploaded with "Puppet Steve", and a minute in he refers to the Ender Dragon as a "Level 5 Black Ender Dragon". Anyone who's actually played Minecraft knows that there is only one Ender Dragon, and only the player can level up. Would anyone else help me take these videos apart? I don't want my brain to fall out.

    1. Currently on the "Enderman Rant" video. I can clearly see Bores is using mods for the Minecraft gameplay footage (look at the bottom left corner).

      Delete
    2. I take back everything I said about the decent puppeteering! The Enderman attacking Steve is literally just a low-quality static image being dragged around!

      Delete
    3. On the Minecraft Blind Box video now. He calls the red villager a "Priest villager" and the Slimes "slime cubes". Also, he used the same joke about the sheared sheep being inappropriate for kids in two different videos so far. And the next video is the Sausage Party trailer reaction. Wish me luck.

      Delete
    4. And Bores decided to (poorly) censor the Sausage Party trailer in the (clearly staged) "reaction video", even in the few places where there was no swearing. WHY. And apparently Steve only recognized Seth Rogen from Kung Fu Panda when he's more famous for adult movies? This isn't funny, this is stupid!

      Delete
    5. On the LEGO Dimensions Wave 4 video right now. Steve asks what a Gamer Kid is when he sees the Midway arcade level pack. It's "what the fuck is a muscle" all over again!

      Delete
    6. Watching his amiibo video, and he pronounced Ryu as "rye-you". I think Bores has made this mistake before.

      Delete
    7. More naming mistakes are present in his FNAF toys video: he refers to Chica's cupcake as "Mr. Cupcake", (he doesn't have a canon name) and the Endoskeleton as "animatronic skeleton". Also, when Golden Freddy "summons" a rock to kill Steve during a "joke" in the video, it flies right in front of the zombie to kill him. Good old Chris Bores.

      Delete
    8. After resting, I'm going to finish up these videos. In his Secret Life of Pets toy review, he refers to Norman the guinea pig as a hamster.

      Delete
    9. Watching the first Pokémon Go (or has he refers to it, "Pookamon") video. Right of the bat, the zombie appears to be playing it on a Texas Instruments calculator of some sorts. Steve "tackles" the zombie afterward, where the "guts" that come out of it are represented by packing peanuts (?). And when Steve actually plays the game, Bores' hand is covered up by crudely edited on "puppet hands". And if you missed the arrows from the Irate Gamer pointing out everything on screen, they're here too!

      Delete
    10. Also, the "driving hack" video is an obvious fake. Who would have guessed. All the driving footage is clearly stolen, complete with watermarks in some places. Also, more proof that Puppet Steve is Bores is when he goes to a Pokéstop, it's located at the "TMCC Community Center". One quick Google search reveals that it's located in Toledo, Ohio, not far away from where Bores lives.

  12. Back when Chris and I had common friends on Steam, he spent a very small amount of time playing L4D2, plus a couple other games, but a lot of time playing Garry's Mod. I always expected him to make Garry's Mod machinima for YouTube, but years later and there's nothing.
Now, there this second channel that he's created while trying to be anonymous. I'm wondering if any of those shitty Garry's Mod videos out there actually are Bores, and he just didn't want anyone to know?

  13. As far as other kids' shows go that are worth watching (and web shows do count, IMO), I have a few ideas:

    Stan Lee's Mighty 7
    Descendants: Wicked World
    We Bare Bears
Jem and the Holograms (the 1980s cartoon, not the 2015 live-action film that was only in theaters for a fortnight)
    Star Wars: Rebels
SpacePOP (seriously, the songs are addictive)
    Voltron: Legendary Defender
    Wander Over Yander
The 7D (a comical prequel to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, has writers from Animaniacs, too)
    Mugman
    Inside Out
    Star Darlings
    LoliRock

I'm sure you may or may not agree with me, but I personally enjoy them.

And it's been... (sigh) four months since he last "reviewed" an old game. Chris, you do realize people mainly watched you for game reviews and not other forms of crap like ghosts, boxes, and Skylanders figures, right?

I wish we could figure out why Chris is so belligerent to his "haters" or critics...

  14. What treachery! You wouldn't suppose he sustains himself on just these videos? Quantity over quality and all that, but I'm not familiar with how ad revenue works on Youtube.

Suffice it to say, you can't fix stupid no matter how hard you try. I took one of those hidden vids a look-see and was not impressed. The show is utterly saccharine, and the voice? Yeah. That's Bores, alright. I can disguise my voice better than that!

    1. Probably because Minecraft is popular with kids these days and he is clearly targeting that audience. Honestly the original puppets look like Muppet rejects.

      Delete
    2. The thing that bugs me about it is I know I've seen those Minecraft puppets somewhere before but I can't seem to find them now. The previous puppets look homemade and not the best job of it. These two just look too well done. Either he took a level in puppet making out of nowhere or he had them made for him/found them for retail somewhere.

Still if he did make them, bravo, he's managed to actually put effort into something for once.

      Delete
    3. I have noted that the 'hands', when he shows the puppet opening things, don't come anywhere near the quality of the actual puppets themselves making me more convinced that he didn't actually make these minecraft puppets. Almost every toy line he shows off are complete sets and it's fairly obvious that he's proud of that.

And it figures he likes Teen Titans Go!

      Delete
  17. I can get wanting to distance himself a bit from the mess he's made of his reputation as the Irate Gamer (though it seems like he ought to have tried to do that sooner, not counting his "opening up" video), but it does seem a bit disingenuous to not announce a new project like this to his long running fans. I mean, anyone who still unironically sticks with him at this point would probably be just as into this new toy show.

  19. Some interesting things: Socialblade reveals Bores' new puppet channel is part of or claimed by BroadbandTV, which according to Wikipedia "is currently the fastest growing and the largest multi-platform network (MPN) worldwide". It has a Youtube gamer network called TGN, one of its channels is "TGN Minecraft Songs and Animations" which has uploaded 9 of Chris' puppet videos since June 30. Ok I guess that was really just one thing, and it probably wasn't that interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Also, I guess now we can say beyond a doubt that Bores does indeed have a puppet account.
    Wokka wokka!

    ReplyDelete
  21. This puppet Steve thing is a pretty good fit for Bores actually. He can continue with his random dorky skits and show off his toy collection with relatively minor effort. On top of that he can shield himself from criticism by saying it's just a goofy show for kids.

Whereas Irate Gamer created some expectations (as low as they were) that Chris no longer wants to oblige. And it brought a lot of heat on him for the quality of his reviews which he never really cared about to begin with (games were just a framework for Chris to hang his brand of bad comedy from).

All in all. This is a good move for everyone. He just needs to shut down the IG channel and stop torturing what fans he has left with crap content. Then again greed knows no bounds.

The puppets themselves seemed to parody Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street, while their main sketch of Mitch bonking Clem on the head may have been a reference to the classic puppets known as Mr. Punch and Judy.

He also didn't touch on the Game Gear or Game Boy versions (while I've only played SNES and Genesis, I've heard that the Game Boy version is actually the best one).

    7. Yes, I do admit that the MD version of B&B is pretty tough, but once you figure out the pattern to the stages, and where to use the items you've collected, then it becomes pretty easy to get the timing down, so you really need to put your thinking cap on.

Also, the best R&S game IMHO is Stimpy's Invention on MD.

    8. With R&S Time Warp, I think the game was designed the way it was on purpose. If you're into the show, you'll probably like it because it feels like the show. Unfortunately, it's also a game with a broken password system.
