Ben Phillips Presents "Opening Up: An Irate Gamer Documentary"

Long-time fan of the blog Ben Phllips, who has contributed in the past by providing the rules for GameTrailer's OutNerd the Nerd contest, has created a video dissecting Chris' infamous "Opening Up" video.

Here you can see Ben point out the many inconsistencies in Chris' story with evidence to back it up.

Enjoy!

  1. Meanwhile in Puppetboria, Bores reveals in the new Puppet Steve video that he went to Universal Studios Flordia for Christmas vacation. He then proceeds with the usual boring toy review.

  2. I like the documentary! Fair and sober, it limits its evidence to absolutely known actions Bores has taken and doesn't try to make him look worse than he is for entertainment purposes (that's not a criticism of this blog; I'm just saying the alternative approach is refreshing, and also works). Ben lays out the facts in their proper chronology and the 'dog that caught the car' metaphor at the end feels apt- sudden success can be a hell of a drug, and Bores just wasn't prepared or schooled in managing it.

That at least explains ten-years-ago Bores, though doubling down on the various lies for a decade suggests an ingrained personality disorder rather than a poor, startled deer in headlights.

    4. I think it doesn't really matter who is in power, I think politics has just turned into another thing to gain ad revenue. hopefully this isn't too political or too far in tin hat territory (and its just a theory/opinion and political neutral: Hillary is a whackjob warmongerer, Trump is all kinds of whackjob, I find it funny that both of them are so old. Whoever is pulling the strings in these elections (particulary in deciding/manipulating who the 2 who enter the thunderdome) are really pushing the boundaries. I find it strange that so many states are legalizing marijuana. I really think they are trying to numb people up for whatever madness we have in store. I could go on but basically, large portions of what America is built on is a charade, and its seems like the cracks are really starting to become more obvious.

  7. Well, ladies and gentlemen, i'm back from taking down that demon. it was a hard fight, i tell you hwaht. Anyway, Chris posted another Puppet Bores video out his ass comparing even more bleeping FNAF figures to the LEGO police figures. And it's probably the same old shit as his previous videos, considering the fact that i'm not going to watch it.

    1. That's not even a real LEGO set, it's a bootleg. The giveaway is the flesh-colored skin on the figures for something that's supposed to rip off LEGO City, which official LEGO figures only do for sets based on licensed properties.

  10. I posted this on the last thread not knowing there was a new one:

OT: Remember playing Final Fantasy 9? Did it feel like watching a Disney movie? I'm surprised Disney never made a movie based on Final Fantasy 9, especially since they worked with Square to make Kingdom Hearts. Then again, sometimes Disney does things that don't make sense. Like how come they don't and never have had a TRON attraction at Epcot? That would have made more sense to have than rides like Mission Space or even the now defunct Body Wars. Better yet, how come Disney replaced Captain EO/Honey I Shrunk The Audience with a Pixar Shorts 3D attraction? I mean, it's ok, but this is the sort of thing that should be at Hollywood Studios or MAYBE Magic Kingdom; not Future World at Epcot. I could go on...

  11. So I just watched Ben's video. While he did a great job debunking Chris' video, I'm a little unsure about one thing he says. He says there isn't enough evidence as to why Mike Matei uploaded Chris' email. But didn't Mike outright say here on the blog that he did it because of Chris' TMNT review?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Glad you enjoyed the video! I believe I can shed a little light on the issue you bring up here. You are in fact correct, Batdan does say he shared a correspondence with Mike in which they discuss why Chris' email to James was released. It's in the entry titled "Chris Bores 'Opens Up' a Truckload of Bullcrap". There's 2 reasons I didn't use Batdan's post as evidence, both of them basically come down to maintaining a sense of fairness to the audience I was speaking to in the doc. While I absolutely wanted it to be informative and entertaining to people who have been following this situation since the very beginning, I also wanted it to speak to the uninitiated, along with people on the opposite side of the argument. While I do very much respect and trust Batdan, the blog is unfortunately titled "The Irate Gamer Sucks Blog". Which on it's face looks like a hate blog. It'd be difficult to say I wasn't being bias if I used the blog as a source. The second reason I didn't use that specific post has to do with the lack of evidence Mike provides. No screen caps, no emails, nothing but his word. Since one of the defining characteristics of the doc involves me not taking Chris at his word I figured it would be a mistake to take Mike at his, because that would imply I think Mike is inherently more trustworthy which would again be bias thinking. Hope that clears things up.

      Delete
    2. Okay, that makes a lot of sense. You said in your video that you wanted to give Chris a fair trial and I guess referencing a blog that Chris and his fans already see as a "hate blog" wouldn't really be a fair trial. That makes perfect sense. Great job on the video once again.

    3. I do recall there was screenshot of the mail by Mike, unless i am mistaken.

  12. Has anyone else ever fallen asleep as Irate Gamer videos play on Youtube on auto repeat and had strange dreams as a result? I won't bore(s) all y'all with too many details, but last night (more like early this morning, damn elusive sleep) just that. I dream these people are trying to kill me, I run away and come across Batman (who in reality I have almost zero interest in) and he tells me I must defeat them because they are an evil threat to the world. (The dream turned into a violent, bloody, pus filled horror gore story from there). I wake up, IG is on, and I check my YT history and several IG episodes from his "story arc" were fake beard robed Bores tells IG what he must do to save the world played. Too weird.

  13. Holy Shit. It actually happened. The end of The Irate Gamer has happened. It's over. I can't believe it. I think it's time to end this blog. Puppet Bores is the same shit over and over again. His downfall is still coming. It's officially the end of Irate Gamer. Bores has declared it once and for all. Now is he going to tell his fans the truth as well as telling them about how IG is done with? Or is he still going to hide it like a little pu**y? We shall find out. (Then again, he could get desperate or it could be a ploy for attention, but that's very unlikely now.) Seriously though? He ends the show on a tried old joke he's done before? That's not even satisfying at all! It just stops! I was hoping the last episode he would do was on Metroid if only because i wanted to see how shitty it would be. Godda** it. Oh well. I wonder how Dan's going to feel now that Bores has declared IG is over... Rest In Piss:Irate Gamer 2007-2016.

  16. Wow I "came here" (sat on my ass and went nowhere) for something else but what a surprise that is. I think there is some chance he will revisit it in 5 or so years, he did that too long to just toss it completely away. Well I got thinking of his worst individual jokes and I think these are the most "cringy" (IG episodes only, and I left out the toilet humor and jokes that involve killing/harming sentient beings):
Give me your wallet/bandito (Mario Time Machine)
    Shaft joke (Kung Fu)
    Robbed (ROB)
way to jack off on the cheerleader/cunty bitch (ZAMN)
Ring King BJ reference/What The Fuck Is Muscle? (MUSCLE)
    Taylor Swift Victory (Punch Out)
    nae nae joke (Castlevania)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Let's see, off the top of my head:

    1. The dated "Michael Jackson is a pedophile joke" from his Colorforms review.
    2. The Satan "where the hell are these things coming from?" joke from his Aladdin review (I actually find this worse than the "call 911 because I was Robbed" joke, though that one is still awful).
    3. The Trixie rabbit joke from his He-Man action figures review (in my opinion his worst random reference)
    4. "Stay away from my weiner you!" from his Castlevania review.
    5. His terrible dubbing in his Tekken 6 review.
    6. His pointless skit at the beginning of the Contra review.
    7. The maxi pad joke in his Bazooka Joe review.
    8. Kool-aid man busting through the wall four times in his original Kool-aid man review.
    9. "This is Home Improvement, not Jungle Improvement"
    10. And, in my opinion, the absolute worst. The Dr. Wily rape joke from his Mega Man review. This joke was not only extremely unfunny and disturbing, but also really offensive. Rape is not funny, Chris ! No matter who it's done to! Ugh, Chris obviously has no idea how comedy works.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Mine were pretty much off the ope of my head too. ughhh I forgot about the mega man rape joke. outside of the regular IG videos, I'd put the phony Simon Says cards in that one HOVG pretty close to the top, actually lots of jokes in that series are pretty abysmal: the condoms in the console bit, and the roullete wheel thing to name but 2. I think the legitimately most funny moment in that series is when Bores is captain of a space ship, abandons the message and says something about going to the "nudie bar", mostly because I find it amusing that Ronnie seems pretty psyched to go. I made a brief blog post with a few lists (mostly for as a convenient place to it for my own reference) about Bores. I guess if anyone wants to look at it they can click my name.

  19. Trial version installed. Takes a while to get used to, though.

Playing around with one concept, but I wonder if it meshes with the idea of Seth somehow arriving in that universe, wanting to introduce Communism. I guess it was just my addled mind looking back at those fairy tale anime that aired on Nick back in the late 80's and early 90's.

Also, an old failure shows up... kinda. You have to beat him in order to get your third teammate. Won't say who it is... but Sonic plushies the world over cringe at his name.

      "King of the Fuzzy Door"

  20. You reckon that James Rolfe will finally break the long silence and speak out about Chris Bores? I know he's avoided speaking much about him before but since IG is now officially dead, maybe he wouldn't mind?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. James doesn't need this to talk about someone than doesn't mean anything anymore. Maybe he would have done it in 2009 or 2010. But i think even then James would have past it as unnecessary.

      Delete
    2. Exactly. What is there for James to say other than 'don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out'?

      Delete
    3. Yeah, I highly doubt James even cares about Chris anymore. Keep in mind that the whole AVGN vs IG thing was a one-sided war.

      Delete
    4. Honestly, James tends to get enough backlash as it is from some of the Irate Gamer fans as is without, and actually making jabs at Bores would only make that worse.

But I think honestly, he tends to avoid taking part in such discussions to be professional.

  21. The Power Rangers for SNES review has to be one of his absolute worst and it was the very point where he said "fuck it" and become a parody of himself, bashing good games for really stupid reasons.

  24. So what do y'all think is the worst Irate Gamer review (regular Irate Gamer Review) of all time? I'm still debating. My contenders currently are Aladdin, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Kool-Aid Man, X-Men, Power Rangers For The Sega CD, Kid Icarus, Mega Man, and Duck Hunt.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. My picks are:Mega Man, Punch-Out, Silver Surfer, ZAMN, ALL of the Contra reviews, Castlevania and Duck Hunt (If only because of how lame it was for a finale).

      Delete
    2. Lots to list! But the top three are, in no particular order:

Aladdin (he didn't even mention the Genesis game!)

      Zombies Ate My Neighbors

Mega Man (seriously, that Dr. Wily rape joke may be even cringier than "Someone call 911, 'cause I was R.O.B.'d!")

      Delete
    3. I might have to go with Goonies II, mostly because he spends so much time bitching about the title. It's hard to decide though, even his decent videos have so much disinformation and poor humor (I consider his Waldo one decent, but the mistakes in that one really bring it down, for example)

      Delete
    4. SMB2, CV1, and Aladdin are pretty high up there. The Contra trilogy is pretty high I there as well, what with the pointless skits and that half-assed cliffhanger for the second video. No real thought went into it.

  25. Now if I can get a few sprites customized, but the conditions of them may be a bit weird...

  26. New Puppet Steve episode is called "MInecraft Mini Figures Playsets Series 1 Cave Biome Collection Playsets Unboxing".
    • The title looks like it was typed out in 10 seconds, complete with a typo. Also, the cave is not a biome.
    • Bores seems to be using these "contests" as a vessel for him to get rid of his FNAF stuff because he doesn't seem to care for it. "Benjamin O." won the last giveaway. Now he's giving away his FNAF light up toys.
    • "Each one of these figures is super cute and cuddly". Uh, Bores, I don't think you can cuddle a tiny plastic figure.
    • Claims a playset comes with an exclusive figure, and complains about how it's not actually exclusive. The box never said that the figure was exclusive, so Bores' complaints are invalid.
    • Bores thinks the redstone on one of the playsets is blood. Some Minecraft expert you are.
    • Bores' "niece" voices the Alex figure in a stupid stop motion skit where a waterfall is revealed in a playset, complete with a Legend of Zelda sound effect. Steve acts surprised about this, despite the box clearly stating that it's a waterfall.
    • Dumbest line: "Is this an episode of Indiana Jones or something?". Indiana Jones is a series of movies. Episodes would refer to a TV show. I stopped watching the video after this.

    4. And that ending made Jon M. Chu even dumber than "Daddy Derek" Savage, Paul Feig, and, dare I even say it, Uwe Boll when it came to dealing with critics of the movie, and even its trailer. (I wonder if it won a lot of Razzies last year?)

    6. Can you imagine a person asking you to make a video of how much you love something in order to have a cameo in the film, only to NEVER receive a call from the filmmakers to ever come to set and when the movie came out, you realized that your video was used to justify something that you despise?

      That's absolutely insulting.

      Delete
    7. @itsmrben Well, it should have. At least with Pixels (which is a crappy movie, too), they didn't insult the fans nearly as much as Jem did, unless my memory's fuzzy. Then again, considering Pixels had Adam Sandler (and given his reputation these days)...

    8. A movie based on a cartoon series based on a doll series that Hasbro created to compete with Barbie, who ironically got her own rock band-themed animated movie/miniseries. Anyways, Jem isn't a series that remained popular after the 80s; the doll series was shortly cancelled and there was no Jem cartoon outside that from the 80s. Therefore Jem's main fanbase is going to be the nostalgic 80s crowd. You'd think they'd try to appeal to them more and not just make it appeal to today's teenage girls.

I only hope if they make a Sailor Moon movie it doesn't get the same treatment.

  37. Hi everyone. I haven't been here for a while because for the past two weeks, I've been playing Final Fantasy XV. And I will say that I really like it. I love the combat system and the story so far, I say I enjoy it.

I haven't finished the game yet so NO SPOILERS please.

However, one time I do criticize is that it's an open world. I appreciate any game programmer who puts in effort in creating a vast and interesting open world, but as a result, the game suffers from most open world games these days, the various sub-quests and requirement to stop during your journey to gather magic, items, minerals, etc. will completely distract you from the story. I've been playing this game for nearly 40 hours now and the main reason why I played this game for so long and still haven't finished was because of the sub-quests.

But, I still have the urge to continue playing the game because I really want to know where the story will take me next and I'll continue playing until I've reached the end.

Offensively lazy video. He shows no gameplay footage of these characters in action, he only looks at the toys. In the A-Team pack he mentions Mr. T - even though the character's name is B.A. Baracus. Oh, and the A-Team has a bus.

Zombie Steve resorts to the tired gag of trying to eat the toy.

  59. A sad life span indeed, especially since it had so much potential and could have been so much more respected within the gaming community. The sad and unfortunate truth is that Nintendo made so many mistakes with it. It was terribly underpowered, the marketing was practically nonexistent, a lot of people were confused on what it was to begin with, and it barely had any third-party support (often ending up with games that were gimped, missing features, or came out several months late) which led to droughts that would last for months on end.
Regardless of how badly Nintendo screwed up with the Wii U and how terribly it fared financially, there's no denying it had amazing games that cannot be matched: Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros for Wii U, Super Mario 3D World, the HD remakes of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, Yoshi's Woolly World, and even underrated/overlooked gems like The Wonderful 101 and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (also looking forward to Breath of the Wild in March, which is still confirmed to be getting a Wii U release alongside the Switch).
Even if the Switch takes off after it launches, I hope the Wii U will have a great legacy as a system that people can still enjoy and potentially wonder why such an innovative gaming console could not have lasted within the community (Adam Koralik from FigureItOut Productions said something along those lines when comparing the Wii U to the Dreamcast, with how people today adore the latter system).

I understand what you are saying and several of your points are valid. While I definitely want the Switch to succeed and at least sell as much as or slightly more hardware units than the Gamecube (~21 million) minimally, I do fear for the system as well. Given how it's not as powerful as the base Xbox One and Playstation 4 models, there's absolutely no question that the Playstation 4 Pro, and especially the upcoming Project Scorpio, will be way more powerful than the Switch. This, along with all of the detrimental features of the system and its accompanied tablet that you listed, does seem to spell doom and gloom for the system, which could very well turn out to be Nintendo's Dreamcast in a worst case scenario. However, I do not want the company to potentially go third-party and make their exclusive first-party games across their competitors' platforms. Even if something like that could turn out to be more profitable for them, playing a Mario, Legend of Zelda, Kirby, Pokémon (etc.) title on Sony or Microsoft's consoles would not have the same feel or charm. Plus, I fear that Nintendo games would be forced to be more mature and up to snuff with all of the gritty and dark first- and third-person shooter titles currently clustering both systems, which would ruin the charm of Nintendo's IPs even more.
Going back to the Switch, even if it's not as powerful as its competitors and has a lot questionable features surrounding it, I still hope it does moderately well. Preorders are continuing to sell well alongside a recent increasing stock for consumers to purchase, Nintendo recently unveiled to Nikkei a reasonable yearly price for their online services, and the company also put out a 30-second Super Bowl commercial that truly expresses what the Switch is and what it can do (though it only showcased Breath of the Wild).
Though it's questionable, these and other factors do make it out that Nintendo has learned from the failures of the Wii U and has the potential to turn the Switch into a success. All we can do is wait and see how it fares once it launches next month. I give Nintendo my best wishes, because they definitely need a big home run to make up for the Wii U and let mainstream people know they're still a relevant company.

  68. New Puppet Steve video. More Minecraft action figures.
    • "Steve"'s voice sounds a bit off. Bores sounds like he really doesn't care anymore.
    • The first one is the Zombie Pigman. Bores makes it kill Stay Puft Marshmallow Man (because of his weird Ghostbusters fetish), Count Chocula (because food), and a poop emoji toy (because he thinks he'll be cool if he puts that in).
    • "The spider comes with a spider eye. I don't think he can actually use it". It's the eye that the spider drops when you kill it. That's a basic Minecraft fact!
    • Alex makes a brief cameo.
    • "And of course, to unlock this arrow firing ability..." It's an action figure, not a video game!
    As little effort as always!

    5. Oh it has been thrown out but these guys are obviously willing to try anything in order to try and keep this going. This is obviously trying to use court proceedings to try and stall the deadline of the last ruling in order to try and keep this alive as long as possible. All this has done is respond to a previous motion by the court and pretend that the latest order from the judge wasn't really relevant.

It's obvious they think that forcing the judge to sit on the bench somehow delays any deadline on the table. They are going to find out the hard way that ISN'T how it works at all. All they are going to do is get an already grumpy judge grumpier.

      Delete
    6. Note they filed this on the start of the weekend which is often a legal stalling tactic as the papers have to be processed on a business day making it until tuesday for a judge to be able to comment on the motion.

    8. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0_Kio4XcYE

Yep it was as I figured. Digital Homicide is trying to reset the clock and start the whole thing over again. It seems he thinks that if he can get the judge to do so he'll be able to continue without having to hire a lawyer.

He's going to get this judge very, very annoyed real quick. Nothing in the amendment does anything to change the order the judge has already put on the table.

    9. "The objective of The Defendant is to associate them all, do damage to them all, and destroy them all."

AHAHAHAHAHA I'm convinced. James Romine IS a ten-year old boy trapped in an adult body.

      Delete
    10. What makes it funnier is that he's not actually filed anything new just restated the original complaint but with more of the 'evidence' included then he did before. He hasn't actually done anything to show he's complying with the order given out for the judge in order for the lawsuit to be considered viable to continue.

All he's done is admit connection to one of the 'trade names' that Jim connected to Digital Homicide. Which means he still needs to hire a lawyer in order to file a lawsuit in behave of Digital Homicide or any other corporate entity as a business can't file a lawsuit Per Se. I'm not sure what James thinks this Amendment does to counter the suit's current situation.

      Delete

    14. @ Rocket120

They are recycling the exact same complains they filed in their last lawsuit against Jim Sterling, but just adding a few more quotes from Jim in order to keep this lawsuit ongoing.

How ironic seeing how most of their games are completely recycled with the exact same assets and gameplay.

      Delete
    15. Several of them are flat out the same game but trying to pass off what equates to different levels as a sequel to the first 'game' thinking no one would think that is shady. Yes, they seriously think no one would notice 5 versions of the same game with the only difference being the sprites attacking the player sprite. They think that's putting hard work into their products.

      Delete
    16. Their biggest sin was Wyatt Derp and Wyatt Derp 2.

Not only was Wyatt Derp is exact same game as thousand other shooter games Digital Homitards produce, but its sequel Wyatt Derp 2 is the EXACT SAME GAME as the first one, but just at a different camera angle.

      Delete
    17. Which was just a respriting of a game they made called Krog Wars a space invaders clone that had a top down and a 3D mode. They reskinned that into Wyatt Derp and just split its two 'mode' into those two games.
