Looking Through a Snow Globe to One Last Poker Game

On January 18th 2006, struggling Ohio-based filmmaker Chris Bores opened a channel on the still young YouTube. Allowing him to post various videos including parodies of the popular show Mythbusters, a tribute to Back to the Future, and most prolific, his ghost hunting show Haunted Investigators. The channel did not get noticed, getting buried in the hundreds of newcomers signing up everyday. Discouraged, Chris looked to what was popular. What he found were several satirical videos of grown men complaining about video games from the 1980’s. Leading the pack was a series called The Angry Nintendo Nerd, later renamed The Angry Video Game Nerd. Created and produced by James Rolfe.

Inspired, Bores began work on a new series. Buying used NES games on eBay by the boatload, some used SNES games, some used consoles, and his effects & editing programs. Bores then consulted a thesaurus and found the perfect name. The Irate Gamer. He opened the separate “Irategamer” channel on April 23rd 2007, ten years ago to this day.
His first video was on Back to the Future for NES. In an effort to stand out from the other reviewers, Bores ended the review showing his “super special awesome” effects with a scene where he gets in his car and travels back in time to murder the CEO of LJN (classy). Bores stood by his effects as the reason he was successful.
Though the video was also loaded with similar jokes and points made in the AVGN’s video, and whatever new points he brought up were meaningless or poorly thought out (50 enemies? There’s not even 50 levels in Super Mario Bros!) the video went mostly unnoticed. Bores continued to make videos of poor (writing) quality, until he got to his eighth episode on Super Mario Bros. 2.

YouTube, seeing a video with higher than normal production values, but without the hard-R cussing Rolfe’s series was familiar with, took Bores’ Super Mario Bros. 2 video and featured it. Meaning front page and side-bar coverage all over the site. This lead to Bores getting a ton of new fans, and a lot of critics. His follow-up video on MUSCLE was also featured, leading to more fans. During this time, he sent an e-mail to Rolfe about how he was a major inspiration and how he’s sorry for “possibly copying” any of his reviews. Rolfe and his partner Mike Matei saw the letter and thought nothing of it. At least until his next video on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Though Bores looked at more than one game, his review of the first game on NES was almost exactly like Rolfe’s review. Furious with him, Matei posted the e-mail to show what a fraud he is on the ScrewAttack forum. Chris Bores became one of the most hated video makers on the internet.

This did not stop him though as he continued making videos. He also got noticed by a small gaming website called GotGame, and similar to ScrewAttack hiring Rolfe, they hired Bores to make content for them. Leading to the creation of “Irate Gamer Neo” and his reviews of modern games.
As the internet screamed plagiarism accusations at him, a few people looked beneath and noticed an even bigger problem. Bores had no idea what he was talking about, and the reviews were beyond poorly written. Saying classic games like Ghosts & Goblins, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, and Contra were bad games. Realizing that there were people that actually believed him, people started posting videos pointing out the errors, and one person even made a blog. I won’t acknowledge them by name after they threatened my life, but I will say I was inspired by their blog to create Irate Gamer Sucks, and go even more in-depth into his videos and showcase how and why he’s wrong 98% of the time. I did so for 8 years, archiving his immense stupidity and slimy tactics (sub4sub, view cheating). I even convinced a lot of people that he was fraudulent.

I sat through the stupidity of 2008, the train wreck of Aladdin, the laughable attempt at looking legit with History of Video Games (didn’t even make it past Intellvision), the storyline with more holes than 9/11 theories, the absolute worst of IG Neo, the almost passable but still garbage I Rate the 80s, his attempt to bring back his ghost hunting career, his tell-all video that told even more lies and did nothing but throw Rolfe under the bus, his attempt at being a “professional” YouTube user with multiple videos a week, his first published book, and his utter devolution into shilling garbage before just giving up and going with toys and puppets.

Where am I going with this?  Well… I’m done. I don’t have anything else to say.
Chris isn’t making Irate Gamer videos anymore, and I don’t have anything new to say about Puppet Steve (it’s the same damn thing over and over again). No reason to keep going.

Not entirely at least, if anyone close to Chris is willing to do an interview about him, I’d be glad to do one. Whether it’s SWAGshow or Eric Allen or Brad Harp, or that guy from the TMNT Cereal video (who was he?) I’d be happy to listen. Maybe someone from the ghost community? Maybe even get answers for some of the big unsolved mysteries. Like the validity of LadyBuggin777, how hard Chris actually worked on his videos, Chris’ job outside of YouTube, the reason for countless delays and how it somehow took over 3 years to do his stupid storyline,  and how legitimate of a gamer he was (and considering his complete abandonment of games, it’s likely he wasn’t legit at all).
I’d also be glad to take more former fan testimonials, or even current fans that are likely upset that he’s abandoned you without any closure, instead focusing on an audience of 6 year olds in a show that’s essentially “dangling shiny things in front of you”.
If Chris does come back with actual content, you bet I’ll be back. Otherwise, I no longer have content myself.

Through all the years, trials, tribulations, fans, haters, drama, comedy, I hope you enjoyed reading every last bit, even the early posts that I don’t look back on too fondly.

Special Thanks:
- I’d like to thank my informants for keeping me in the loop with whatever bullshit Chris was up to.
- I’d like to thank Uatu the Watcher for finding a lot of information I never would have found myself, including Chris’ activity in an old Yahoo Group for a Beanie Baby knock-off called the Meanies.
- I’d like to thank Larry Bundy Jr for providing plenty of information about YouTube and Chris himself.
- I’d like to thank Mike Matei for providing evidence of Chris’ lies and for more information.
- I’d like thank Lewis Lovhaug and Brad Jones for reading my stupid ramblings and inspiring me to keep going.
- I’d like to thank the person that showed me Puppet Steve for the first time. I never mentioned him as I questioned his legitimacy, but he claimed to be related to Chris’ wife Nicole and provided some scathing information about him. Don’t take this as fact, but he claimed Chris didn’t hold a job, spending all his time looking up 80’s media. Nicole was angry that he wasn’t looking for a job. They were so cheap they didn’t buy soap, they made their own. The Skylanders stop-motion video was only done in a couple days, not weeks like he claimed. Plus some other info I don’t recall off the top of my head. Again, take with a major grain of salt. I didn’t post it until now as I doubt Chris himself cares at this point.
- I’d like to all the people that didn’t fall for his “Opening Up” video.
- Most of all, I’d like to thank you the readers. Even in the dark times you kept me going. I can’t thank you enough.

  1. Well, it's been a fun time being in your blog, BatDan. I hope that if I ever become a reviewer/writer/film director/ anything, I don't end up as bad as Bores.

    1. Yeah, I hope whatever people take from this blog is that the Irate Gamer is an example of how not to do a web series.

  2. Well BatDan, it was only a matter of time that Chris Bores would become such a shell of his former self that there's absolutely nothing we can say about him anymore. But good job keeping up with all of his garbage over the years. I've actually been following the blog since 2014, but I didn't start commenting for another year because normally I don't like to comment on the Internet. Mainly due to the type of people you encounter (blegh). But I've actually really enjoyed all your posts and all your points about Chris. It's been a lot of fun, but sadly all things come to an end eventually. Then again, Irate Gamer pretty much came to an end a long, long time ago.

Chris still might publish a second ghost book, but I'm sure he's too busy with puppets to bother right now. Not to mention that the first book was a flop anyway, so I don't see what reason he would have to publish a second book.

So much for the Hardcore Pawn appearance. It would've been quite funny to see a recap of that (if it actually happened).

Maybe once Puppet Steve loses it's popularity and Chris gives up on that, maybe there will be more material in the future. I honestly don't see Puppet Steve lasting for more than two more years.

It really was awesome, BatDan! Thanks for all that you've done. I wish you tons of luck.

  3. I've kept up with your blog almost since the beginning, BatDan, and it's sad to see you go. However, I respect your decision here, and with Chris's lack of content lately, I don't blame you.

Thank you so much for all the great posts, and for working so long at detailing everything you could about Chris's failures. You and this blog will surely go down in Internet history. I used to watch the Irate Gamer myself back in the day, as far back as when he was still being featured on YouTube. My brother and I used to love him just as much as the AVGN. We were young, dumb and more tolerant of shitty media. (I used to like a straight to DVD knockoff of Cars for fuck's sake...) That is, until I discovered this blog. Looking back now, I have far more nostalgia for this site than anything IG has ever put out. You single-handedly showed me what was wrong with him back when I was so much younger and more impressionable. It seems like forever now. You helped teach me to think more critically about the things I watch, to know what does and doesn't make good comedy, and when to call out people's mistakes. Now that I'm older and just entering adulthood, I can safely say that I owe you one, BatDan.

Thanks for all the great years' worth of posts, comedy and fortitude. It's been an honor keeping up with this site, and I wish you the best of luck in moving on from here on out. Give yourself a good, long break from everything, you've more than earned it.

  4. Dan, I remember in 2010 you wanted to close down the blog because Chris didn't make videos very often. But your fans wanted to see more, including myself, so you delivered for 6 more years. I appreciate that, man.

  12. Godspeed, Dan. I really loved seeing all the posts debunking Chris when it came to reviewing things or trying to make James look bad. And yes, I agree that Puppet Steve isn't really worth covering as his material is beyond formulaic.

  13. I wouldn't jump on Chris and his wife for making their own soap. There are legitimate reasons for making soap at home. (For the record, my wife refuses to buy soup at the grocery store and always makes her own.)

On topic though, I think Dan made the best decision. Chris abandoned his IG fan base and Puppet Steve is so empty and soulless that it is meaningless to document it.

Thank you, Dan, for all of your hard work over the last eight years. You went above and beyond what anybody could reasonably expect. Chris will always be a mediocre producer and he will never again have an opportunity like he did with IG.

Also, thank you for posting my article on this blog a couple of years ago. That was an honor.

Take a rest, Dan. You've earned it.

  15. It does seem that this is really it. Sad, too, how far Chris has fallen (not that he was all that high to begin with). But yeah, there's nothing useful to say about anything he's doing now beyond what was already said, so I guess this is it.

I'd like to offer my sincerest thanks too, for creating a blog to show how wrong Bores was on so many things, and for the entertainment you've provided over the years.

Now I just hope you plan to leave the blog up still rather than deleting it or something. Since, you know, there's always gonna be a reason to remind people how wrong stars, of any sort, can be, with this dissection of one now plainly brown dwarf (at best). Also, it's still fun to read the archives.

  17. I think a (former) GotGame employee would be our best bet if we want to get an interview with someone close to Chris. It seems as though Eric Allen wants nothing to do with Chris anymore which is probably why he disabled PMs and comments on his channel, and it seems that Brad Harp and the guy from the TMNT commercial are the same regarding their time working with Chris.

  18. Who's all for buying BatDan a drink after all he's done? Seriously, thanks. Without this blog I wouldn't have found out about ICBINAVGN and DoubleEdgeSword2's followup and just how crap Irate Gamer was. I still don't know why I thought he was cool when I was in middle school.

  20. off-topic: Have any of you heard of "Ludum Dare"?

It's a three-times-a-year game jam. Game developers (or teams of developers) enter a competition to develop an entire video game over a weekend, following a theme. It's been going on for 15 years. I've been wanting to participate for a long time but it always lands on weekends when I'm busy. I finally got to participate today, along with two friends.

The theme this weekend was "A Small World". Our game is "Around The World In 80 Seconds"

Whether it be dissecting Bores' videos, debunking his constant lies, or questioning his public comments (i.e. Facebook), it has been an absolute blast reading through every new post you put up. I've been a reader and follower of this blog since December 2011 (man, how fast time flies) and it has been a fun ride all the way.
If this is truly the last post you make, I don't blame you. It would seem that Chris has all but abandoned and moved on from the IG shtick and focused all of his time and effort (or lack thereof) toward Puppet Steve. If Bores doesn't come back, I can see why you wouldn't have to as well. Besides, I would say you've earned a rest after everything you've done for the past eight years.
Whatever happens next, I wish you the best of luck, BatDan!

  32. One last word about Chris:

You wanna know how he let his fans know that he's OFFICIALLY done with the Irate Gamer? Through the description on his channel. Wow. What a way to go out.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Well, as they say, all good things must come to an end.

BatDan, this has been an amazing ride, long time reader, first time commenter(ironic isn't it that I'm doing this on your last post). Anyways, let me just say that reading your rants, raves and debunks of IG's videos has been a joy. Especially considering I used to be one of his fans when I was a young.

I think it was 2010 or 2011 and I was going through a bit of an obsession with Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was on youtube, watching some videos of the final smashes in the game, and I began to wonder about the character, R.O.B. (Keep in mind I had no idea about the classic games.) So, I searched for the character and one of the results happened to be his review of R.O.B. and his games. After that, I went to his channel and began to watch his videos. So, he was my introduction to classic video games.

Now, not having any prior knowledge, I trusted his opinion. I actually believed that Super Mario Bros. 2, Ghost n Goblins, and Zombies Ate My Neighbors were bad games. (Something I'm still kicking myself for doing.) I did end up trying them out and realized that they weren't as bad as he said. Though I just shrugged it off as different opinions.

However, it was at the time of his "story arc" (Part 1 of his Robocop review) that I began to fall out of his fanbase. I was getting annoyed with having to wait for his next video and so I began to look for something else to watch. Then, as I was watching one of his older videos, I came across my first introduction to AVGN (his Castlevania reviews). As a result, Chris's videos became an afterthought and I became more interested in James's reviews.

Then, I found this site and, after reading some of your posts, I finally realized how stupid I was for watching his videos. I then stopped watching his videos, only going back to watch one while also reading your blog of that episode.

Now, after so many years, it's all coming to an end. So, once again, thank you for the laughs and critiques, BatDan. This blog site will always bring back fond memories.

  34. Well, it's officially 10 years ago today that the Irate Gamer made his debut. If Chris doesn't do something today, then that'll be his last chance. Knowing him though, it'll probably be, at best, a generic Facebook post or tied to another shill video. What a tragedy. 10 years would be plenty of time for a competant filmmaker to vastly improve their craft, and Bores had so much time to be forgiven for his earliest reviews. But really, he only got even worse through the decade.

A damn shame by any standards.

Oh, oh man, I don't know anything important or relevant to any blog posts :/ I hope I didn't come off as false advertising, just a few things such as how he responds to parody messages (a few friends of mine have sent him parody messages of his infamous e-mail to James) where he responds by either pretending to care "cool thanks!" or being incredibly gullible (probably not even for Chris).

He also had a situation when his girlfriend broke up with him and a few 'haters' were going to meet him in person at a Haunted investigators expo or something, and taunt him about it. They never did though. I'm not sure if you mentioned these before.

  50. Batdan,
thanks for every article you published since 2010. These articles were so enjoyable, and i'm wishing you the best.

In 2007 i discovered the IrateGamer (Super Mario Bros. 2), i was 17 but knew nothing about the NES and those old consoles (I started with a PS1 in 2000), i thought it was hilarious. In January 2009 i read a comment under one of his video calling him an AVGN-Ripoff. I was curious, who was this AVGN. I watched his review of "Die Hard" for the NES, i saw his reference to 9/11 and i found it hilarious. I liked him since the first munute. I watched and enjoyed both of them till 2010.

Summer 2010, i was dissapointed about the delay from the Irategamer, in about 3/4 months no new episode, so i looked him up on the internet to get some information what's taking him so long. I found this blog and read your article, i was like "Is that guy serious?". So i started to see if Bores was wrong and you were right. It was a learning process for myself to question myself if stuff is right what people are talking about. So i learned a lot about old consoles, thanks to you and James Rolfe. I read every article since this summer, and even made a marathon last year to read every article from the beginning to now, because of Bores slow pace.

So once again, thanks BatDan, thanks to you guys for some great comments to everything you just wanted to talk about and partly expand my horizon.

    Thanks!

  59. Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 is officially announced. Once again, there are complaints about it not coming to Nintendo Switch, but I feel that the real shortcoming of this collection is that they're not using the Sega Saturn version of Mega Man 8.

  61. I'm late to the party and I haven't visited in a good while since Bores never posted anything, but wanted to thank Dan for his years of keeping this blog up.

I discovered this blog randomly one day a LONG time ago and the best part of it for me was that you seemed to write exactly what I was thinking when I watched IG's videos.

    Anyway, thanks for the memories.

  62. It's been a while since I've been on this blog since bores doesn't post anymore but thanks for entertaining me with this blog. One thing you could do is another former fan testimony. I actually used to like his content when I was like 10 and it was before I knew the controversy surrounding him. I just found his random humor entertaining. If you want I can give you my full story on how I grew to hate the guy.

    1. Umm...Mr. Enter is a great reviewer. He gives thorough analysis of shows, gives plenty of legit points, and clearly has a passion for what he does. What are your arguments against him? I'd honestly like to know.

  64. Didn't get around to posting on this thread yet. I'm assuming it will be the very last one but I just wanted to say this.

Chris Bores created a show to bash bad video games in a style very similar to AVGN. It appeared as a rip off, yes, but at the end of the day that didn't matter because AVGN became so popular that tons of people were copying him or parodying him or even trying to top him. It did come to everyone's surprise however that his channel became as popular as it did.

I'm just going to end with this, you can agree or disagree if you want I don't care. Chris Bores took a huge risk by making his show and I commend him for putting himself out there and becoming a success. Yes he made a lot of bad decisions, the quality of his show wasn't what we would have liked it to be and he did some really below the belt things during his YouTube career, but at the end of the day he stuck through it and now he's still living doing what he enjoys. Most of us are either in school/college or working a 9 to 5 and following the regular motions society set for us and wouldn't dare set foot outside of our comfort zones.

It was fun reading this blog and picking apart the Irate Gamer videos - I did think it went a little far sometimes like crossing over into Chris's personal life or even Puppet Steve, but if Chris wasn't at least somewhat successful, this blog wouldn't exist. When you're successful, no matter who you are, people will ridicule you.

    1. If he's found financial security with the Puppet Steve thing good for him I guess, but does he really show any sign of enjoying the job simply beyond getting paid?

      Delete
    2. How exactly did he take a "huge risk"? You're giving him WAY too much credit.

      Delete
  65. It's funny how Chris boasted about his appearances in "Gore Orphanage" and "Hardcore Pawn", when his part in "Gore Orphanage" amounted to nothing more than a post-credits cameo, while "Hardcore Pawn" ended before his appearance even made it into its broadcast.
