Fan Testimonial from Prince Mario

Hi.
While I'm still retired from covering Bores, I will still post former fan testimonials. Here's one from Prince Mario.
If you have a testimonial you wish to submit, please let me know.

Hello to all of BatDan's readers I'm a somewhat popular youtuber by the name of PrinceMario (You can view my channel right here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCz2fQphFH9QoFaYyvpO8fbw) In this post I'm going to tell my story on how I used to love Chris Bores when I was 10-12 and how I grew to hate the guy.

It all started back in 2009. I was just 10 years old at the time and we still had dial up because we couldn't afford wifi. Back then there were certain sites like YouTube that I had just discovered and found it to be the most amazing thing ever. I started looking up videos on Super Mario Bros 2 because I always wanted to know how the NES Mario games were (keep in mind that Mario 64 was the first Mario game I played so I didn't know a whole lot about NES) and the first result was Irate Gamer's Super Mario Bros 2 video. At the time I loved it because I was a huge Mario fan and I loved random humor. I also found his jaws and back to the future reviews and found them funny,

At that point I was an Irate Gamer fan. I wasn't the kind of IG fan who would go and attack AVGN fans (I didn't know who AVGN was at the time) but I was just a casual fan who enjoyed his work. I would show my cousins at family gatherings Bores' reviews and they would find them funny. Just keep in mind I didn't know as much about retro gaming as I do now so at the time I thought Mario 2, Ghost and Goblins, and Contra were bad games because Bores said it.

This all changed about a year later when I discovered the AVGN. I discovered his Ninja Turtles review and saw the date it was posted and thought that Bores directly stole from that video. Then I went and watched more videos by James Rolfe (Back To The Future, Mario is Missing, etc). However at the time I still enjoyed both Bores' and Rolfe's works and just thought they were similar.

Then in 2011 Bores posted an E3 video on him blowing up Ubisoft because he wasn't allowed to attend the conference and that was the first video by him that I hated. Then it got even worse. In 2012 James Rolfe posted a video promoting a Cheetahmen II kickstarted that got a lot of hate. At the time I didn't care too much about the video because I try not to get involved in internet wars (I didn't with the war between IG fans and AVGN fans).

However right when the whole flame war was going on Bores posted a video titled Ebegging The Spoof and I hated that video so much I unsubscribed from IG and totally lost all respect for him. After that I completely forgot about him.

That is until 2014 when he posted a 40 minute video attacking James Rolfe and this point is where I found the IG sucks blog. I started reading every post on the blog and going back to Bores's videos and thinking 'how did I find this funny." I then found I can't believe it's not AVGN and DoubleEdgedSowrd's take on the videos and that was where I found Bores entertaining to watch again. The guy's text commentaries were s o enjoyable. I also found the Third Rate Gamer and loved him and I wish he could make more stuff.

Then afterward I started reading the blog until Bores called it quits. Now will Bores come out of retirement or put something that's worth ripping on. We don't know. That is my full story thanks to Batdan for letting me share this.

    1. Does your princess get kidnapped often and you have to rescue her? Ha.

Jokes aside, hmm, seems like most of the people found Irate Gamer by his SMB 2 video. Most likely because at that time, YouTube has been featuring him heavily (like how some videos persistently appears on your recommended list).

And yep, I also hated that Ubisoft video. If it is done today, it's going to be much more damaging to his rep.

Just one question though: When you used to be his fan, did you comment on his videos? What kind of responses will he give, like is it "Cool, thanks for the comment!" or something else? I'm just curious.

    2. I never commented on his videos at the time because I wasn't allowed to have a YouTube account back in 2009 so I had to use my older brother's account.

  2. I watched Irat Gamer's 3-hour commentary on Bores and it was great. His second one got blocked, by the fucking bastards at ShoPro! Seriously, fucking YouTube is getting worse with this DMCA bullshit! Fucking fair use is dead!

  3. Very interesting testimony, Prince Mario. Regrettably, there hasn't been a whole lot from Boring Man besides all this puppet nonsense and masturbatory FNAF videos, and the CB Network has been dormant for some time. I will have to check out your channel sometime, but for now; I'm watching some E3 coverage. Nintendo has not only given some great new looks at Super Mario Odyssey, but more on the new Kirby as well as some real new Metroid games. Metroid Prime 4 and Metroid Samus Returns, to be precise. Been a while, but I've been busy with school and Breath of the Wild, among other things. Also, with Splatoon and Pokkén getting new games on the Switch, I'm practicing for the new ones on the originals. Sony and Microsoft also had good shows, and I am very excited for what lies ahead.

    2. I know. Stolar had multiple foul-ups that make me glad he's no longer working for Sega (he has done somewhat better at Mattel); and though I agree that the long-term is something I am keeping in mind, the short-term seems to be all right. Most likely, provided I have the money and I'm actually able to find one; I still intend to see if I can get a Switch for Christmas or my 26th birthday. I don't know how Skyrim or FIFA will fare compared to their counterparts; but I am interested to see how developers make use of the console as well. I don't plan on playing those versions with the same expectations I would have on their competitors. Even though Sony didn't have any big hardware reveals, I am glad to see the Insomniac Spider-Man game moving forward; as well as a remake of Shadow of the Colossus, one of my all-time favorite PS2 games. Most likely, I will probably get Horizon Zero Dawn once the new expansion goes live. As for Microsoft: the Xbox One X (formerly Project Scorpio) does look impressive, but the price tag of $500 is a bit of a deterrent for me right now. Still, the concept of being the most powerful console ever does intrigue me for what can be done with it. That, and there is something that amuses me about the Crackdown 3 spot with Terry Crews and bringing back the original Xbox controller (the "Duke") that was as big as my head. I am also glad that the 3DS will be supported past 2018, since there have been games I've been wanting to play on it for ages and many others. Even though I still miss Iwata, I submit Kimishima has risen admirably to the occasion and in filling his senior's shoes.

  4. It seems a fair number of IG fans found him through their curiosity of retro video games and without context they were unable to separate the BS from the "review". Out of curiosity, Prince Mario, did you believe the slowed down star in the SMB2 video really was that slow? Did the History of Video games series leave an impression on you?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I did at first but then I played the game for the first time and that's when I stopped trusting Chris Bores. I was never a huge fan of the History of Video Games series and I never liked how there was only one episode a year. I could probably get to the Wii in the same time it took him to get to the Oddesey.

      Delete
    2. Seven years and Boring Man only managed to get up to the Intellivision.

      Delete
    3. What was even the point of History of Video Games. We all know he's not a gamer and he got so many things wrong in those videos (Al Acorn, saying Nolan Bushnell wasn't in the odyssey confrence, getting the release date of the Atari 2600 wrong etc).

      Delete
    4. I kinda hoped it would continue, to see if he'd try to keep up his "Genesis was released to compete with SNES" story.

      Delete
    5. Hell, as I expected; the Switch launch came and went and he never got to the NES. The pacing was definitely one of the many problems with the series; along with the inane sketches and bad jokes (if he thought Atari Hangman was filthy, Custer's Revenge would have blown his mind). That, and judging consoles that were made in the 1970s by modern standards was tremendously dumb (Odyssey and Channel F being notable offenders). He even teased getting to Pac-Man before all this puppet fuckery began and became his main focus.

    1. I don't blame you, those things are obnoxious to me; and even with more of this stuff coming, every time I just check his channel; the content seems indistinguishable from one video to another. Shame, because I actually find puppetry a rather interesting medium. Jim Henson, he is not.

    2. We should get the Puppet Steve fans to know about Bores's past on YouTube and we'll expose him so badly that puppet steve will go downhill.

      Delete
    3. Bores has already been exposed as Puppet Steve. Most people who might have cared had already moved on.

Don't worry, Puppet Steve will die faster than Irate Gamer. The show has no real vision and the production values are extremely lazy. And this time Bores won't have the infamy and mass exposure from YouTube to boost him

      Delete
    4. Yeah, I can see Puppet Steve going the same way IG did; albeit at a much faster rate. The kids that watch his mugging will move onto other content creators and not look back on this fondly at all. It is entirely possible to make toy reviews interesting as a subject matter (I really enjoyed Ashens' lambasting of his least favorite Pop figurines, a line he's made no secret of his dislike for); but I can telegraph every new video Boring Man makes with these puppets: toy gets unveiled, toy gets vaguely described ("reviewed" is generous at best), Puppet Steve and sometimes Alex or Zombie Steve try and fail at hijinks; lather, rinse and repeat. While Chris' other content was pretty bad too; at least the other stuff on "CB Network" was all uniquely bad (Irate the '80s, Pursuit of the Paranormal and the Artistic License History of Video Games, among others). There's only so many times that I can deal with all this puppet nonsense before they all blur together.

Why keep blabbing about something that happened years ago from somebody the internet has long forgotten about?

I only bother asking because I still want to know what goes through BatDan's head when he still makes these posts?

I posted a comment like this on the Duck Hunt video a few months back and he seems to have deleted it. Interesting. He's not putting any more videos on that channel, yet he's still deleting comments on it. Kind of weird, considering their's still A LOT of hate comments on his last couple of videos.

Also, despite any criticisms I or anyone has about Pubta Steve, (or the video I am about to mention), it was nice to see him bust out those NES games in that recent video. (I vaguely recall wishing Bores would do something like that in a comment on here at some point).

  22. The Collingwood Arts Center has removed the ghost hunting section from its website. While Chris did do a charity ghost event there last year it seems that his ghost hunts at that location are severely diminished. In fact, the CAC website seems to be debunking Chris on the About page:

"Contrary to the opinions of various paranormal enthusiasts, very few incidents of paranormal activity have been witnessed by the residents. Although "orbs" (said to be a deceased person's energy or life force) can be captured in photographs quite routinely, the mysterious sounds and visions of ghosts reported on various websites are rarely, if ever, credibly documented. If such paranormal activity exists, it merely adds to the unique flavor and ambience of one of the largest and oldest structures in Toledo's historic Old West End."

"(These will be shipped in 1-2 weeks as they are currently on back order!)"... yeah, "on backorder", as usual you're not fooling anyone but yourself.

I'm not surprised at all that he's selling fidget spinners. If there's a fad that requires no creativity on his part, you can bet he'll try to profit from it. From the looks of it, he just printed up some pictures and glued them on.

    2. And that is leaving out the fact that Chris does not have the rights to either Steve or the Minecraft zombie. Microsoft might have something to say about that but with only 32 sales so far, they might not think it's worth the effort, There was a video on the Puppet Steve channel marketing the fidget spinners and he called them "rare". I suppose he is correct on that one...

    2. "Their current model does not financially support anything that takes long to produce." BULL. CRAP. You're full of it, Bores. There are several channels with main series that take a while to produce and they do well on YouTube. Not to mention those channels put WAY more effort into their videos than anything you've ever made. And even without their main series, they put out PLENTY of content that they know their fans will enjoy. Chris just admit you never really cared about Irate Gamer and it was only something you did for money. You're able to make plenty of money off of Puppet Steve, something that requires much less effort than the Irate Gamer. You got rid of Irate Gamer because you didn't need it anymore in order to make easy money. Enough with the lying, Chris. You aren't fooling anyone.

This toy has this, this, this, and this! This toy is cool! Like and subscribe!" *Insert several random stupid jokes in between*

    2. BatDan tried covering Puppet Steve and it was pointless. The videos are mostly showing some toy and saying it's cool. Chris might have some "wackiness" now and then in Puppet Steve but it's ultimately pointless.

  49. Wow, Chris actually did a non-toy video on the Puppet Steve channel. In this video, "Puppa Steve" looks at "Easter Eggs" from the 2017 DuckTales reboot. All he does is points out several nods to the Scrooge McDuck comics and the original DuckTales show. Ummm...random? What was the point of this video? I know Chris' Puppet Steve fans may be part of the audience for this show, but why make this video on a channel where you constantly talk about toys? Do five-year-olds even care about Easter eggs to things they wouldn't even know about? Are you just desperately trying to show how much of a DuckTales fan you are since you have this pipe dream that of working on the DuckTales reboot? Chris, it's not going to happen. Just give up.

Also, I can't be the only who thinks that Chris didn't find all these facts himself. I'm pretty sure he looked them on the Internet somewhere. Part of me wonders if he completely lifted most of the facts from another video.

The last "Easter Egg" Puppet Steve says is not an Easter Egg. It's more of a foreshadowing of the mystery of the nephews mother. Chris, it's not an Easter Egg if it's a major part of the series. I'm pretty sure that line will be a major part of the reboot.

Chris calls the original graphic novel "The Life And Times of Uncle Scrooge" AGAIN! The actual title is right there on the screen when he says it! HOW do you keep on getting that wrong? Do you even care?

Oh, and Chris continues to show how much he fails at basic grammar. At around four minutes, he says: "This ancient Aztec coin which everyone hide behinds." "Hide behinds"?! What the hell? Chris, what is wrong with your English? I'm legitimately curious. Did you grow up speaking some other language or something? Don't start with that "I have an accent" bullcrap. NOBODY talks like that

Ignoring the fact that I myself am from Texas and I don't give a crap about politics whatsoever, what these people are saying is that hundreds of people, including children, deserved to have their homes flooded and destroyed and several lives lost because a large number of other people living in the same state supported a president that they don't like. So should we go bomb Germany because Hitler came from there? Uggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh

It's all good, every video is a lesson for me and it's what I believe is what keeps people like me (newbs) from degenerating into mini Irate Gamers ourselves.

  52. Just some perspective on the Puppet Steve Etsy shop. As of this writing, there have been a total of 47 sales there (compared to over 180,000 subscribers on the YouTube channel.)

26 of those sales were for the Puppet Steve Lego figure (gross revenues $259.74)

14 of those sales were for the Puppet Steve fidget spinner (gross revenues of $111.86)

7 of those sales were for the Zombie Steve fidget spinner (gross revenues of $55.93)

No sales for the Zombie Steve Lego figure yet but he is fairly new.

Total gross revenues from Etsy are $427.53. I'd be curious to know how much Chris pays for those products.

I don't really think a Patreon campaign would work for Puppet Steve. Looking at these numbers it is clear the majority of Puppet Steve fans have the disposable income to support Chris beyond YouTube ads and that is a notoriously unstable source of income.

    3. I don't normally leave comments on Chris or "Puppa Steve's" videos, but I just had to leave a comment on this particular video because it disgusted me on every level. Ignoring the poor quality of the Let's Play itself, the intentions behind making this video just infuriate me. This is a channel aimed at children, something "Puppa Steve" himself says, yet he felt the need to make a video playing this type of horror game and put it on a channel that he KNOWS children as young as five are watching. I know Chris has done things like reference things that kids wouldn't get or promote South Park figures when kids watching his video wouldn't even watch South Park. But dear Lord, this is taking things to a completely different level. Chris, I know you have no freaking idea who you're audience is and I know you don't give a damn, but that doesn't give you the right to start putting whatever the hell you want on your channel just so you can make money. Chris, you know kids 5-6 are watching these videos. Kids are gonna' find your videos easily since you shamelessly exploit Minecraft by using it for your stupid character. VERY young kids are going to find these videos. And then very young kids are going to watch videos of horror games like this and have nightmares. ALL because you wanted to mooch off of something else that was popular. Chris, kids are not asking you to do Let's Plays of these games. You are doing it because you want to make money. You don't give a damn about who watches your videos. And you're perfectly fine with traumatizing little kids because you can make money off of it. How the hell do you sleep at night, you dirtbag? I'd really like to know.

I already know Chris is going to delete my comment. It won't matter. Hopefully angry parents will see what Chris is doing and they can somehow have "Puppa Steve" shut down from YouTube. 2. According to the comments, BATIM's fan base mostly consists of kids. Whether or not that's true, that doesn't change the fact that this game was NOT meant for kids. Some seven year olds may enjoy watching stuff like this, but I'm pretty sure there are A LOT of seven year olds who would be traumatized after seeing stuff like this. Just because kids like something intended for teens and adults, it doesn't make it appropriate to put it on a channel intended for kids. Some six year olds may like Pulp Fiction, but that doesn't mean it should be shown on Nickelodeon.

It's a good thing Emily Wants To Play didn't become as big as FNAF, or else Chris would've done a video on that as well. Emily Wants To Play is waaaaaay scarier than FNAF or BATIM.

    1. 1. Bored has been offered constructive criticism many times though I am not sure how many people made public offers.

      2. AVGN has been heavily criticised on a number of points ranging from quality of his material to raising funds for his movie and his perceived association with the Cheetahmen II reproduction campaign.

      3. It was never proven per se though there may have been some circumstantial evidence.

      4. There have been many videos about Bores removing critical videos from YouTube

      Delete
    2. 1. Well I feel that the fact Bores was offered help was a sign that his priorities were skewed. I can understand playing the part of the genie and Wise Sage if Brad and Eric were unavailable, but when people are willing to aid in production and are denied, it just seems like he made it harder for himself.

      2. I guess for all that James might slip up on he does try to take the higher road like not making a slam video akin to Bores' Cheetahman II parody video.

Heck, back when Doug Walker started doing the running gag of slamming the AVGN, James actually wanted to take part of the joke sooner, but feared that his more rowdy fans would take it the wrong way and hassle Doug.

Can one honestly make the same case for Bores?

      Delete
    3. I was refering to the 2007-2008 years. During them I recall very little discourse over James tgat wasn't IG fanboy attacks. As playitbogart pointed in his blog James began reviewing more and more media licenesed titles, his toilet humour was getting the better of his work at times (like in the simpsons review)

Another point was the fact tgat he reviewed titles that were already covered by his peers, like rambo (playitbogart reviewed it first) and terminator for the nes (armake21 also made it first). Despite this, I don't recall that much of a discussion on the matter.

Note: edge, I'm reffering to videos from the time period, when talking about bores recieving constructive critisicm

      Delete
    4. Well, if you were referring to a specific time period it would have helped if you had mentioned that in the first place. The earliest incident I can think of when James was criticized for toilet humor was the Odyssey video which had the Nerdy Turd. If there is an earlier incident then I am unaware of it.

In my opinion it is silly to criticize someone for reviewing something another person has already reviewed. I never understood the logic that reviewing something means nobody else can ever review it as well.

Chris posted a recent Facebook post about how he had a booth at a paranormal convention and the crowds at his table were so big that 'he couldn't count how many times they blocked the walkway', and then he shows a picture of just two fat people in front of his table. 1. My first thought that event looked really sparse. Then I thought I might be unfair with that - the photo could have been taken in the morning. So I wasted my time to investigate. MiParaCon is the Michigan Paranormal Convention and it was held at a convention center inside of a casino/hotel.

The named guests included the usual suspects like Grant Wilson. No mention of Chris Bores... which is fair enough. He never claimed to be a guest. The photo looks like he simply had a vendor table at the convention. That is perfectly fine though you'd think somebody who created a new branch of psychology (which Bores claimed to have done) would be a more prominent guest.

Bottom line, I can't find any image to suggest this was a heavily populated event. Furthermore, that walkway in front of his table was so narrow that a well fed person or two could easily block it. Nothing to brag about and I hope Bores was joking.
