An Unnecessary Clickbait Follow-Up

On Friday, Chris released the follow-up to his Sewer Shark video. He said before it would get "long" if he posted it in the initial video. Except this video is only 3 minutes 40 seconds. Sounds like a lie so he could turn it into clickbait. As the title goes "Sewer Shark SEGA CD SATANIC MESSAGE?!"

So what's so important that it needed its own video?

The video opens with Chris claiming that he found this years ago and nobody has posted about it online. Yeah that's a lie. I'll show it's a lie later in the post.

A long explanation on how Sega CD games could also be played in a CD player. I guess it's something for really young people that don't know about CDs?

He finally plays the message. Which is a short phone call to Digital Pictures with someone talking backwards.
"It's not Satanic" ... Chris, you should look up Betteridge's law of headlines. It renders your stupid title pointless.

He goes on about how it freaked him out as a kid. No I can't buy that you ever touched a Sega CD as a kid. No.

The backwards message is just someone saying "Number 9" three times. A reference to Revolution 9 from The Beatles' White Album. He claims the Beatles were infamous for putting backmasked messages in their songs. That was only two songs, Rain and Free as a Bird. There is no "Paul is dead" messages, there is no secret Satanic shit in Stairway to Heaven, it's all interpretation. But then what do I expect from someone that still thinks ghosts are real.

The video ends with Chris declaring Sewer Shark one of his favorite Sega CD games. Whew talk about shit taste! There's way better games on Sega CD. Chris seems like the type that thinks the flashy new tech equals quality, when it really doesn't.

First of all, Chris is lying when he says this has never been seen before. I Googled "Sewer Shark Easter Egg" and this was one of the first results.

Posted in 2010! Eight years ago!
Once again, Chris fails at doing basic research.

Secondly, why couldn't this be in the first video? This didn't really need to be a separate video. Well, outside of the blatant clickbait. That's probably the entire reason.

Sorry for the sloppiness of this post. There wasn't really much to say.
Well there is one thing. Chris' view counts are terrible. The Sewer Shark video is only a little over 10,000 now. For someone with 156k subs, that is garbage. It's like how Puppet Steve has over 280k subs, but his Etsy store only has 126 sales.
Speaking of... *checks Puppet Steve videos* "Five Night's at Freddy's Star Wars Lego" What the fuck is this? Throw it in the trash.

  4. I remember hearing the Sewer Shark "backwards message" clip years ago, myself. When I was listening to various console warnings about not putting a video game CD in a normal CD player...

Also, if Bores were to put any other Sega CD game into a normal CD player, this is what he'd get. Trust me, you'll have nightmares.

  5. You know, I am actually going to praise Chris to an extent here.

Yes, this new series has so far been a low effort and boring experience. No argument there.

These two videos were shot at the same time (Chris is wearing the same shirt). My guess is that this was split into two videos so he would have one ready while he is away at ParaFest this weekend.

I'll give Chris credit for at least doing this instead of waiting months later for a follow up video like he often did during the days of the Irate Gamer.

He still has a lot of work to do in the quality department though.

    1. Congratulations! Writing a book is no easy task so take pride in what you accomplished.

If you decide to pursue crowdfunding, make sure to calculate the cost of shipping physical rewards to your supporters. If you don't, the shipping will wipe out any savings from ordering in bulk.

Have you considered putting it on Kindle and Kindle Unlimited?

You might also consider putting it on Google Play. They often give $5 off of book orders so if you put it on sale for $5.01 during those times you give people a low cost path to check it out.

    2. Is there any penalty? I remember that if I had put it on Amazon, I could only sell through there and nowhere else.

    3. Putting your book in KDP Select requires exclusivity (which includes Kindle Unlimited and Kindle Lenders Library).

The standard level KDP does not require exclusivity.

    4. But what kinds of rewards could I possibly give out? I'm poor as dirt and I can't think of anything other than autographed copies, and that brings in issues of addresses and not looking like a cocky douche.

  7. I don't know if this is an intentional message or not, but the Beatles song "A Day In The Life" also seems to have some sort of weird message played backwards. The end of the song seems to say "Will Paul be back as Superman?" when played backwards.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In the days of vinyl records, that was the "run-out groove" of the Sgt. Pepper album, not really part of Day in the Life, the album's final song. If your turntable didn't have automatic return, the tone arm would go all the way to the center groove. This groove was normally silent, but the Beatles whimsically put a few seconds of themselves making noises for a smidgen of added value.

Like many backwards-audio situations, you're entitled to use your imagination but no message or meaning was intended.

  8. So I've looked into the Channel Awesome Controversy. From what I'm seeing, I don't get why everyone is pointing fingers at the Walkers. Mike Michaud seems to be the main guy responsible for what's happening. Many people agree that if Mike was fired, the site would get better.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I really want to like the site again. I've been following NC for 10 years now, and I stopped following once the reviews became more like skits, but I'm now glad the NC reviews every other week are more like his old classic reviews.

      Delete
    2. It seems that at best the Walkers were silently complicit with abuses by Michaud. In the case of Rob Walker, he did seem to give conflicting information to Allison and others. As for Doug, he was apparently the deciding vote to fire Holly the day after her surgery and seemed to have a role in dismissing Allison when she was filming a scene and didn't respond to Skype messages for 15 minutes (though Michaud is definitely the bigger problem in that incident.) Other than that, the complaints about Doug seem to be a bit of insensitivity (the rape joke in To Boldly Flee) and a bit of incompetence as a film maker (no water on set, not enough cars to transport the set, continuity errors, unsafe conditions).

      Delete
    3. @ Silent Spring

because the Walkers are either complicit or willfully ignorant. You can't tell me they knew NOTHING of any of the goings on. Neither brother may not like business but at the same time they can't play or be this stupid.

      Delete
    4. I'm curious to hear Michaud's side of the story, but I'm unsure if that's going to happen. Even the Dom, another member's who's recently left the channel, claims that he was asking for answers about all the controversy, and according to him, Michaud has remained silent. Now if that's true, then I'd find very suspect.

      Delete
    5. (Speaking as somebody who's been an avid watcher of the site since TGWTG was first formed, and feeling like I did when Bill Cosby was outed as a rapist.)

Nobody isn't saying that Michaud isn't the main guy that people have issues with; but the reasons the Walkers are getting flak is because of their roles in everything.

Not only did they basically handcuff themselves to the most incompetent businessman I've seen since... well... I won't say, by basically selling the IP to the Critic, Doug's other characters and the whole site to him for who knows what reason, the Walkers are shit at business.

They might not have been doing most of the awful administration things themselves (unless it was a committee thing), but they were complicit in it such as Holly's firing.

What utterly disappoints me is something that I've noticed since they started doing the Annual Specials; Rob & Doug usually do all the writing themselves, never letting any of the other producers get involved until the script is finished. So you have personalities like FilmBrain or Brad or even Linkara who are way out of character in the movies, because neither of the Walkers really ever watched their stuff or asked them "What would your character do here?"

And because of their bad business sense, their unprofessionalism, and their inability to actually apologize, CA is a ghost town now.

Literally the only people left outside the Walkers (and their associated actors) are Brad, Masako, Sage, AngryJoe, Guru Larry, E-Rod, Maven, Toons These Days, Yomarz, Gaming Wildlife, Battle Geek Plus, and Bargain Boy.

Most of them have either their own sites or a Youtube channel to stand on; it's looking more and more likely that they're going to keep hemorrhaging producers.

It's April right now; TGWTG/CA is 10 years old now. I don't think it's going to live to be 11. And even if it does; it will never be the same. Too much bad blood.

      Delete
    6. Oh, and also there are still producers like Rocked and Horror Guru who are still there, but are hidden away under "Archived Shows" because the site is still so shittily designed which EVERYONE has complained to Rob and Michaud about for years and still hasn't been changed.

I just found out that FilmBrain is also gone, yet another long term producer not even getting a farewell message.

Since my memory is a bit fuzzy, why did Count Jackula leave the site? Was it because the Walkers/Michaud gave him pressure for firing on the SJWs who were pissing on AVGN (for his refusal to review Ghostbusters), JonTron and PewDiePie?

      Delete
    7. Last bit, actually looked up Jackula's channel, and he's made a video about his time at Channel Awesome.

Actually goes into the subject that most people involved with ChangeTheChannel don't really want to talk about: how they made things equally as shitty as the management did.

Like I mentioned before, I used to hang out with a clique that grew overtime based on my best friend in middle and high school and who he started hanging out with, and the people in this clique were all a bunch of anime/video game nerds who all worked at GameStop or were friends of friends from high school and were very similar to the Channel Awesome crowd. I of course stopped hanging out with this clique when they claimed that anyone who voted for Trump is the same as a child molester, misogynist, etc

    9. Okay, thanks for clearing everything up. Yeah, we can't say the Walkers didn't do anything wrong whatsoever, but I honestly think people are going a bit overboard when they say things like "I'm never watching Nostalgia Critic again." I still find NC hilarious and Doug Walker seems like a nice guy. He just needs to stop being so blind to everything that's going on. It would be great for him to make a video about it, offering his side of the story. But I have a feeling he would create even more controversy if that were to happen.

Also, what happened to Todd In The Shadows? When did he leave Channel Awesome?

      Delete
    10. Todd did leave, and he also didn't get a farewell notice to the best of my knowledge; just the removal of all his stuff.

I believe he left sometime last month, but he's uploading directly to Youtube nowadays.

Disappointed that I rarely get any of his vids recommended to me; I get a shitton of Lindsey's stuff, and I have to click "Not Interested" every time.

    11. After reading the doc, damn, the management in Channel Awesome is horrifying. And I speak as a (former) fan. Miscommunication, mistreatment of producers, poor filming conditions, and general incompetence all around. Admittedly, there's some petty grievances there, but it doesn't excuse the serious accusations against Channel Awesome. Check out some of the sections from Allison Pregler and PR person Holly Brown for some details. And it saddens me as a former fan.

Channel Awesome could've remained a great website, hosting some up and coming talent and reviewers. Instead, it evolved into the Doug Show, with more emphasis on Doug and pals instead of its various producers. Might as well, considering the mass exodus of producers last week.

Honestly, if the main people in Channel Awesome just acknowledge what happened these last few years and sincerely apologized for all the mistreatment and show that its a better company, then maybe it wouldn't be too late to fix their reputation. But alas, the damage is done in the eyes of many people, especially with their weak apology. 'We're sorry you feel that way?' Seriously? Logan Paul had a much better apology than that.

  9. Comment from Chris on Facebook:

I had the best time at the paranormal convention yesterday. You fans kept me so busy I hardly had any time to go to the bathroom! It is so amazing talking to new people and watching them hit that "Aha" moment with my research.
Now the following comment is going to piss some people off but if you are offended, I'm sorry but you are NOT helping people, you are causing more suffering than you realize. I keep running into a huge problem in this field and one person that stuck out for me yesterday was this woman who had lost her daughter a year ago to a tragedic accident. All she wanted was answers and not some 'fluffy' canned responses that many seem to regurgitate at will. (I will not mention any names). She teared up many times during our intense conversation and after spending 20 minutes deprogramming her from all the "shit" these damn psychics and mediums keep shovelling to her, she for the first time really began to understand the deeper meaning behind this and walked away very comforted by what I had to say.
I know my spiritual journey isn't for the majority of my fans on here and I lose way more money than I will ever get back in this endeavor but these moments are exactly why I do this. I see a huge lack of anyone educating people on the ancient powerful teachings about the other side. Being able to make this kind
of an impact at these events makes it all worth it.

Honestly, this is just so... disheartening. I've seen that site grow for more than 10 years. I was always saddened when someone left (even Lindsey, then again that's before I found out how SJW she was and would become), and when JewWario killed himself, and when it became soberingly clear that people weren't gonna ever be on speaking terms with others ever again despite the (perhaps only surface level) comradery they had.

I'm glad that all the non-Walker related producers at least had the solidarity to leave when it became clear that Michaud was never gonna change, but seeing others like Walter, Tamera and Malcolm double down on that sinking ship...

The closest I can compare this to is like being a little kid, and seeing Mickey Mouse and the crew take off their costume heads at Disneyland, and seeing ugly, unpleasant people underneath. Multiplied by Bill Cosby.

I'll even say it: I'm heartbroken. I'm so depressed, that I just want to crawl into bed and not leave for a few days. It's always bad when you know something is coming to an end; even worse when things come to light that make it next to impossible to watch/remember the past without feeling shitty.

He says these things bring home the arcade experience - despite the fact Karate Champ has a joystick and two buttons. (Karate Champ had two joysticks for each character. You did fighting moves by moving the joysticks. A roundhouse kick had you move the joysticks in opposite directions, for example.)

He mentions a game as having come out in the arcades in 1983, "right at the end of the video game crash". WHAT?! The crash was simply a retail phenomenon for home consoles. There was never a shortage of arcade games coming out during that time.

Chris thinks the fact these things take 4 AAA batteries is "super cool".

He liked Bad Dudes in the arcade because 2 players could play it simultaneously. He said that was a rare thing in the arcades back then. HUH?!

He sounds most animated when talking about Retro Game Treasure - the show's sponsor. I think we can see why Chris Neo was created.

    2. My reaction and review:

      - I guess the glasses are going to be the main thing now, even though he looks like a gay Geordi LaForge

      - Gushing over the arcade cabinet. Ok, we get it looks cool. You don’t have to spend over a minute talking about how “super cool” or “super slick” it is, especially redundant things like how many batteries it takes.

-Video is basically just a boring play through of him saying it’s hard and difficult.

-Valid point about the marquee, but I seriously doubt it would have costed significantly more to light it up.

-Complaining you can’t play two players on a fucking console the size of a game boy. No comment there

-This episode is just a repeat of his puppet Steve video without the puppets and he even admitted going to ToyCon.

-That didn’t look like a Game Boy Game at the end

Overall these items are pretty neat. I mean we’ve come a long way since the shitty tiger electronics games

    3. Who the hell pronounces "volume" like that? It sounds like he's saying "Valium"... well, the video is putting me to sleep.

  25. Hey, guys, are you aware about Jew Wario's sexual misconduit?

If that was true, that means that Chris's claims that he will suffer for eternity sadly and infuriately accurate.

    1. Regardless of what JewWario MAY have done, saying "he's burning in hell" or "I'm glad he's dead" is going way to far. I can't stand it when people do that. Please don't start with that.

    2. May? It's pretty much confirmed he did do it. Holly the HR chick pretty much said it, and recently tweeted out his wife probably knew about it before he offed himself like a coward.

I'm far from religious, but if that's how one feels, why would it be going to far? Especially when heinous things they've committed. If I said I'm glad Hitler's dead and burning in hell, you gonna tell me I'm wrong?

    3. Can we please not compare JewWario to someone like Hitler? You don't know how JewWario felt about what happened. He could have felt terrible about it for all we know. But we WON'T know, because he's not here to talk about it.

Not defending JewWario's actions at all. I just don't think it's right to compare him to Hitler or say that he's burning in Hell.

  26. So, I've only tangentially been following the Channel Awesome implosion (I'll probably catch up on the details once the smoke has settled in a week or two), but with them basically losing all of their content creators over the past couple weeks, I have to wonder, are larger content aggregator sites kind of dead at this point? I just feel like pretty much each one I've seen at best faded into the background in relation to their creators (like NormalBoots) or at worst slowly ate itself from the inside through mismanagement until it was ready to collapse overnight (like Channel Awesome or for a much older example Machinima). Maybe it's just how the medium is evolving these days, but right now the groups with the most promising futures are ones that just stick to a more tightly knit groups of creators, like TeamFourStar (please don't let them balloon out of control...) or some of the groups of former or currently departing CA reviewers who still associate with one another. Maybe it's just the ones I've followed, but that sort of seems to be the case from what I've seen.

  27. Only two shows left on CA - Brad Jones and Guru Larry. Like, damn. Like I mentioned before. It's like going to your favorite mall that once had a full functioning food court, an arcade, a kickass toys/electronics store, a movie theater, etc. only to find the only anchor store left is a JCPennys (Nostalgia Critic), a GNC (Brad Jones) and a hot dog stand in the center aisle (Guru Larry).
