Even a Rebrand Doesn't Stop Recycled Content

*wakes up*
*sees cavalcade of internet drama*
*goes back to sleep*
*gets alert from informant that Bores posted something*
Alright.

Got a near six minute video this time. Some tiny arcade cabinets.
The thumbnail is terrible. Chris is eating a clearly fake hamburger, like he couldn't go to Burger King or something to pick up a real burger for this thumbnail? What kind of low effort crap is this?
He really wants to emphasize that he's talking about BurgerTime.

Intro, "retro gamers", shmup opening...
Jeez, he's wearing the stupid glasses throughout the video. Are people telling him the glasses are cool? They're not.
He thinks these things are a good way to play arcade classics. Are they? They look tiny, and hard to use. Are they for kids?
He admires the accuracy to the original cabinet. "I don't know how they did it" ... They looked at the cabinet  and copied it? He wonders how they got the art. Likely a deal with G-Mode, the company that owns the rights to BurgerTime. This isn't rocket science!
More admiration, more "cool"
"The sausage that tries to kill you" That's actually a hot dog. The enemies are called Mr. Hot Dog, Mr. Pickle and Mr. Egg.

"These things take four AAA batteries, SUPER COOL" First of all, those are AA batteries, AAA batteries are much skinnier. Second, that is not "super cool" in any way! That's a lot of batteries, and since you have three of these things that's 12. That seems like a waste.
"You can turn the volume up and down which is super cool" Stop saying "super cool". Is it a verbal tic now or something?

"I pretty much have a love-hate relationship with this game because it is so (pointless pause) DIFFICULT" Not really. I mean, the original arcade version maybe since it costs quarters to play and adds a psychological effect that demands you do well or you waste your money. I can't imagine this version since you likely get infinite continues. And even then the game isn't THAT hard, only in later stages.
Chris admits he could only get to the second level. Wow... you suck.

He plays... cries about how tough it is (even though he's not dying a lot)... tries to remember when it was made, claims '83 (actually '82, a year off)....
"It came at the tail end of the video game crash" Chris you do realize that the crash only affected home consoles right? Arcades were safe.

He complains about the aspect ratio, that it should be taller. I should mention this isn't the original arcade version, it's the NES port. Making it "taller" wouldn't help. Also, that makes this a total rip-off. It promises the arcade version, but you don't get that. Going to mention that Chris? Then again, he thinks people wouldn't tell the difference between two versions of Ghosts n' Goblins.
He also complains that the marquee doesn't light, and thinks that it would drive the price up if it did. No not really, this just looks cheaply made.

He moves onto Bad Dudes. He tries to act nostalgic, how he played it at a pizza place. It's not working.
He laments that there's no multiplayer. No shit, that thing can barely fit your hands, much less two.
And then... oh wow. He states that a big reason he loves this game is that it was co-op (or "two players at the same time"  as he often puts it) and that "it was very rare to find games like that". No it wasn't! Contra came out a year before, Rampage came out two years before, TMNT came out a year after. There were plenty of co-op games around that time! How?!
By the way, this is the NES version too. Where BurgerTime only had slight differences, Bad Dudes is VERY different from the arcade version. Wait... remember his Smackdown vs Raw 2008 video? At the end of it he randomly decides to "shred" Bad Dudes on NES because it "sucked ass" compared to the arcade version. How does Chris not notice this? It could be... he's a big liar that never actually played any of these games!

And he goes on about how he needs to review the NES version because what he hates about it is that they removed the co-op. You're playing the NES version you moron! How do you not notice this?!
"I haven't played this in years" Not an excuse!

He moves onto Karate Champ
He thinks this game had a different name. Only in Japan, it was called Karate Do, but everywhere else it was Karate Champ
Again, the NES version. You might have seen this in videos talking about bad games.
He tries playing, randomly references The Karate Kid (cringe) and... stops.

"You could build your own coffee table Arcade!" No.
He mentions how he was at ToyFair. Huh, I wonder if it's connected to when Puppet Steve went to ToyFair. HMMMMMM
Notes there's more coming. I don't think he'll be looking at them, always promises but never delivers.
He claims a PR guy told him they also want to do obscure games. Good luck.
He then claims he told him that he really wants Food Fight. I don't think they can do that, all the games are Midway, Bally, Namco, that line. Food Fight is from Atari. Unless they strike a deal with them, don't expect it.
"It gets no love these days" Because nobody cares. It's not really a major game. Also, I doubt he played it.

Video ends, but then we get a commercial from his sponsor. Retro Game Treasure, a lootbox service that gives you old games.

Boring.

You may notice in the title I use the term "recycled content". That's because Chris looked at these exact same cabinets on Puppet Steve. On March 29th, so it hasn't even been a while. It's just so damn cynical and lazy. Are we going to see more crap already looked at on Puppet Steve? How long until "Chris Neo" starts doing FNAF shit?
I'd compare the videos, but my tolerance for Puppet Steve is at an all time low after that... "Poopeez" video. *glances at his channel* He just posted a video where he runs over a bootleg plushie with a lawnmower, and a 10 minute video on another grossout toy called the Flush Force. Is grossout coming back? Are we going to see Nickelodeon bring back Ren & Sti- oooh wait no that's probably a bad idea now.

Over on his Facebook, he mentioned that there's another video coming for an NES game, one he's had planned since 2007. I know there's a some games he promised way back then. Deadly Towers in the comments of one of his oldest videos (before they were disabled), and the Simpsons NES titles. Or it could be something else entirely
He then claims this video was "30 years in the making". I get what he means but it still sounds dumb.

That's all for me. It's cold outside.

  5. Chris has not been vindicated about JewWario. For the record, Chris wrote that Justin would suffer in the afterlife for committing suicide. Chris did not comment on any misdeeds that Justin did in his life.

Secondly, as a Buddhist, Chris is aware that his religion does not believe in Hell as described by Christians. Buddhists believe in Narakas but even that does not apply in this case. Narakas are not where a spirit goes as punishment from a divine being. They are a place where spirits reside until karma has been satisfied and at that point they are reborn. Finally, being sent to a Naraka is not necessarily a fiery punishment as there are also freezing Narakas.

For a person who claims to be very spiritual, Chris is not very good at religion.

The reason Chris received criticism for his comments in 2014 was because of the sheer insensitivity to Justin's wife and loved ones. Now it has come to light that Justin has done something awful and I wager the personal issues were behind that horrible act as well as the suicide. That does not make Chris's comments any less distasteful though.

    1. I agree. And it is still very distasteful to say things like "he's burning in hell" or "I'm glad he's dead." For all we know, he may have actually felt awful about what he did (that is, if he actually did it). But we'll NEVER know for sure now since he isn't alive to speak about the matter.

    2. Yeah, having a contact on his phone called "My Slave" is really feeling aweful about it. You seem more heartbroken it was him than anything else.

He's a coward for taking his life amidst of being a predator. CA, Ex-CA contributors who knew, and JW are all not innocent in any way over this scenario.

His wife apparently knew he was one too.

So you think Scott Peterson feels awful bout killing his wife and unborn baby too?

      Delete
    3. Also, contrary to popular assumption, Hell is shame. Not fire and torture, as most would like to think.

      Delete
    4. Chris' comments were more about suicide itself. His statement wasn't just offensive to Justin's case but to all suicide victims.

I did consider it, after hearing this but no, what Chris said was unacceptable as it wasn't about one individual, it was about everyone who's killed themselves.

    1. The blog isn't letting me use the "img" tag, but BTG's response, quoted in full, is:

      Well crap

It truly is like old times, gents and ladies- we've even stumbled upon a crime. (pours the cognac)

      Delete
    2. He responded to mine, too:

"Oh, I see. I may need to change mine. Someone made mine, but I think they used a template"

      As for getting a screencap:
If you're on PC, then it's Ctrl+PrntScrn to get it to the clipboard, then you can paste it anywhere (I think there's also a "snipping" tool that comes with Windows, just look in your Start Menu for it.

if you're on a Mac, Cmd+Shift+4 to select part of the screen or Cmd+Shift+3 to just grab the whole thing, and it'll automatically save a file to your desktop.

and here's how to make a hyperlink, it's barely more difficult than copy-pasting a URL.

      Delete
    3. He responded to me as well. Sounds like he got the intro clip from a small service site like Fiverr or something but that bit of content is available for others to use.

      Delete
    4. @Edge XL He responded: "Someone made it. They probably used a template for it. That sucks."

Aren't templates supposed to be starting points that allow you to customize? Chris' intro looks way too similar to BTG's for this to be just a coincidence. What it looks like happened is that Chris took BTG's exact intro and made a few minor tweaks to it. If that's what happened, then I guess he has been going back to old habits.

      Delete
    5. @Silent Spring - It really depends on the licensing agreement. I myself have purchased a fair amount of royalty free music, sound effects and art for use in my own projects. Most of them only require me to credit the creators of the works, not to make any modifications to the works. It's how stock content creators make the most money - they simply slap the customer's logo on the end. I'd really love to know who created that particular space ship sequence in the Chris Neo videos.

      Delete
    6. Chris also replied to my comment. He said: "You're an idiot. This intro is available for sale on envato."

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6F2Yj2Lyvq0&t=1s

I'm still not buying it. Going by his logic, Blue Television Games purchased his intro from the exact same place. He and Chris' intro had a few minor differences, but looked almost the same. I'll give Chris the benefit of the doubt that MAYBE he bought a template and made a few changes to it. But that would mean whoever made BTG's intro made no changes whatsoever to the template (Chris' intro had every single thing that BTG had, with just a few things added). But that honestly feels like a stretch.

Also, I STILL can't do screencaps for some reason. CTRL+PrntScr didn't work.

    9. Here it is, for 20 bucks to license/use, I guess. His nose seems clean here, but it still shows he's not keeping aware of what other YouTubers are doing, not that he can watch literally all of them.

      Delete
    10. @Harrod Nice find! But there is a problem. That license is good for a SINGLE product. Under those terms Chris would have to pay to use that for every single video ($20x3= $60 so far).

Chris claims that intro was for sale on Envato. The thing is, Envato charges a subscription fee. They don't sell items individually. Their licensing terms require you to register the asset for each project that it is used in. That said, I can't find that same intro or the creator on Envato.

      Delete
    11. There are also two tiers of licensing on it, based on whether the end user is charged for the product. Fortunately, if Chris-Tube-Neo DVDs are ever sold, we can fully trust him to update the licensing status as necessary.

      Delete
    12. Okay, well I guess Chris is clean this one time. But let's be honest, when you have a long history of thievery (some of his old game reviews, the stolen Sonic Generation footage, the Screen Rant article) and you happen to have something in your video that looks very similar to something from someone else's video, it's very hard not to assume that you're stealing again. No Chris, assuming you were stealing does not make me idiot. It's your own fault I came to that conclusion.

    13. @Silent Spring. If it makes you feel better, it's possible Chris is violating the license agreement.

    2. I wish Doug would redeem himself. If James Rolfe can redeem himself after the e-begging controversy, so can Douglas Darien Walker.

      Delete
    3. There's nothing wrong with a crowdfunding campaign, nothing for James to "redeem" himself from as far as that's concerned.
There's plenty wrong with creating harsh and abusive workplaces and being indifferent about sexual harassment and assault, and it takes quite a bit to be redeemed from that.
Hopefully they both could redeem themselves from general drop-offs in quality of content, but I personally am not very invested in it (especially with Doug).

      Delete
    4. @vnisanian2001 The difference is that James did not really do anything wrong. While one may think the AVGN movie is good or bad (I think it is pretty bad myself), it is clear that he spent the funds on making it and everyone received their promised rewards. As far as the Cheetahmen 2 thing goes, James only promoted it and even then everyone received their promised rewards.

On the other hand, at the very least Doug was involved in firing Holly the day after her surgery, pressured Allison over midrolls and posted a response that could potentially put at least one of JewWario's victims safety at risk. (Don't get me wrong, what JewWario did was heinous but the victim wanted this to remain unknown because she is afraid of the potential backlash.)

Doug could well recover and thrive away from Channel Awesome.Lindsay, Pehlous and Allison certainly did. However, Doug would have to make a sincere apology for what he did and not a "We regret you feel that way" statement.

      Delete
    5. The fact that people still say that James was "e-begging" still utterly pisses me off. He gave a product that was promised, whether you liked it or not. And to base the idea that he "stole" money based off of an uncited claim is the pinnacle of desperation.

      He didn't pull a Spoony.

      Delete
  16. I know it's old and OT, but can someone tell me the whole story of the Cheetahmen 2 Scandal?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A man named Greg Pabich wanted to release a reproduction cartridge of Cheetahmen 2 with corrected code so that all of the levels could be played and beaten. He began a crowdfunding campaign to finance the project. James Rolfe, Pat Contri and The Game Chasers were asked to promote the campaign and they did. The game was made, put on cartridges, fit inside retro style boxes with instruction manuals and comic books. All of the people who pledged money received their rewards.

James had previously ran an IndieGoGo campaign to finance the AVGN movie. That movie was also made and people who pledged their money received their rewards as well.

James did receive a lot of criticism for crowdfunding the movie (people were not as tolerant of these things as they are now). Some people also erroneously believed that James was behind the Cheetahmen campaign when in truth he merely promoted it.

      Delete
    2. Plus, it wasn't really a scandal as far as I'm aware?

I know people wanted it to be, but didn't Pabich actually deliver on the fixed games to people? It's not like he pulled a Mighty No 9 on people.

The big issue was when Mike Mattei freaked and tried to pull support for the campaign because of the rumors.

      Delete
    3. Though I've heard that the version Greg delivered was actually worse than the original Cheetahmen II. In other words: none of the major bugs were fixed and a whole host of new ones were introduced. The only thing actually fixed was that you can now play every level.

      Delete
    4. Extra bugs would actually surprise me. There were already fixed ROMs of the game online, and I assumed Pabich was just going to burn those to ROM chips like any other repro cart, and pocket the money he raised to "fix" it.
Even Nintendo has sold ROMs that were made by unauthorized third parties rather than make their own.

    1. I kinda liked it. The pop-culture references are plenty, and in a way come of as just blatant and excessive pandering, but it was still sort of cool to see many familiar characters as avatars, rather than trademark-safe knockoffs. It made the virtual world on the movie seem a lot like online communities worlds, particularly in modding communities, so it's a believable online world of the future.

The real-vs-virtual world aspect was more believable than say "Tron" or "The Matrix". It really did seem like natural progression from where we are now.

The actual story was alright, basically your typical quest for fame/power with some "corporate warfare". Not trying to post any spoilers here, but the final item the hero needs to find was supposed to be in a clever hiding spot, but I think most classic gaming geeks would have figured out out during the exposition at the beginning.

I did see Rampage and I thought the movie was ‘meh’. It’s just an average popcorn flick starring Dwayne Johnson. And definitely don’t expect a well written story. I will say though that the visual effects, especially on George, Ralph and Lizzie, actually do look fantastic.

    5. Bores didn't "call out" JewWario, he criticized him for committing suicide, likely because of his silly religious beliefs. It had nothing to do with the things JW were doing.

  24. Lol. Chris replied to my comment asking about his intro. I brought up the notable examples of the time he HAS stolen in the past. This is what he said:

"Its people like you that ruin YouTube for everyone. You demand me to comment on stupid garbage like your the internet police on what I'm doing. I'm here to make videos for people that find me entertaining enough to watch, not produce Oscar winning programs. This is youtube. Get over it."

I can't even make fun of this comment. It's a complete joke on it's own.

    4. "This is youtube. Get over it." <- Chris literally recycled those two lines from his Opening Up video.

The problem, Chris, is that YouTube is not a shield from criticism nor is it an excuse to be unethical. Being on YouTube does not mean you get to use copyrighted content without authorization (Fair Use is very limited) or spread false information.

Violating licensing agreements is serious, Chris. If that is what you are doing then you need to stop. I once sued a website operator for using my own content without compensating my and I was awarded for EACH violation. You don't want, Chris. Trust me on this one.

    2. My thought is Doug Walker will go independent and start making his NC episodes on Amazon Prime as soon as the smoke clears.

      Delete
    3. If James does have an opinion on the Channel Awesome debacle he will not be sharing it publicly. Rolfe has absolutely no part in this. He is actually extremely soft spoken in real life and has no taste for internet drama. He will maintain his personal friendship with Doug Walker but will not become involved in the CA controversy.

      Delete
    4. I don’t think he’d want to say. He took the high road by staying quiet about the Irate Gamer (for the most part), so I expect he’ll do the same with this.

      Delete
    5. One of the reasons I admire James is that he comes off as a guy who just wants to make videos (and films), always slaloming around unrelated or tangential attention-getting opportunities. Who else would you expect to be the biggest star and the last man standing?

      Delete
    6. That was always one of the best things about James. He has always came off as being someone passionate about movie making and gaming and films. He never really cared to start some big website or the politics about it. He just makes stuff. Sometimes it flops but the good outweighs the bad. And hell he even seems to come out pretty clean whenever Mike Matei does something dumb, too

    7. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't James part of Channel Awesome at one point?

  32. Okay, I am not going to type a long post because frankly, I'd rather mess around with this Labo stuff. 3 quick points though.

Chris does not want to mention Irate Gamer. He refers to it as "his previous show".

He Game Genies his way through the game. He is open about it though.

When shilling for the sponsor, he mentions Game Boy games while putting down a Game Boy Advance cartridge. I guess he can technically call it a Game Boy game but why not say "GBA" or put down an actual Game Boy cartridge?

    ReplyDelete
  33. At least he's doing an actual bad game...

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ok I know this game is bad and is known for its sheer difficulty, but Chris isn’t even trying. Like in his previous videos, it looks like he’s purposely running into enemies and jumping off ledges.

Also complaining about how green monsters don’t fit in a middle age setting, even though it’s purely a fantasy setting? Really stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  35. “There were so many bugs in this game, from controls to the hardness factor.” Words mean things, Bores, you can't just cut up an old gaming magazine and glue together a script ransom-note style.

  37. Looks like I was right about the Game Genie thing.

Also, I'm surprised he did Deadly Towers, since "you-know-who" also reviewed that game.

    ReplyDelete
  38. One thing I will give Chris credit forv he actually showed a LOT more of what DT is like (the seven towers, the bosses, etc.) As it is, it's pretty hard to find ANY footage of the game past that infamous first maze that James focused on in his video.

  39. Irate Gamer is back to falsely flagging videos! He false flagged Ben's documentary on his "Opening Up" video. The piece of shit hasn't learned a damn thing in the 11 years he's been on YouTube! I made a video about it here:

    4. You know what's funny? Ben's entire purpose of that video was to examine the Opening Up video in a completely unbiased way. He even says in the video that he was giving Chris a fair trial. ALL he did was see what was true and what wasn't based on REAL evidence. He PURPOSELY did not reference this blog to avoid coming off as biased. Yet Chris is still butthurt because Ben had the AUDACITY to analyze the video to see if what he was saying was the truth.

Remember this little remark Chris made?

"Its people like you that ruin YouTube for everyone. You demand me to comment on stupid garbage like your the internet police on what I'm doing."

We're not allowed to be the "Internet Police" and call you out for blatant theft, yet you're allowed to false-flag videos when they say something about you that they don't like?

This is all I have to say to Chris:

  40. Same here. As I stated in the video, I thought Bores was finished with his false flaggings, especially after he mocked Mike Matei for disabling comments. But I guess he still just can't take the heat. He tried to claim on Facebook once that he doesn't care since he's "retired" (even though we know he isn't now), but this just proves that he was once again, lying.

  41. It's hypocritical that he mocks Mike Matei and James Rolfe when they were under fire during the whole Cheetahman 2 'Scandal' yet he cannot handle criticism himself.
