Update: Out of Town This Weekend

Hey just want to let you know that I'll be out of town this weekend so if Bores posts something worth talking about in that time, don't expect a post on it for a while.

Thank you.

  1. Probably for the best...Chris has quite obviously given up as a content creator and just getting by with the minimum amount of effort.

  3. If you wanted to crowdfund for something, but lack funds for a lot of prizes, what should you do?

I don't want to jump the gun before I do anything. I'm just trying to think of ideas.

    1. Are you crowdfunding for a book?

Technically the funds for the prizes should come from the donations, if you already have the funds for prizes, then that should go towards whatever you're kickstarting (which is why the "prize isn't worth the donation" argument that so many rabidly anti-crowdfunding people make is pretty dumb. If you're giving them something worth $10 for a $10 donation, what's left for the actual project?)

There's some non-tangible things you could provide. Some examples I've seen/thought of for game prizes would be allowing them to name/design a character, or name/design a character after them. You could also sell advertising space. You could also offer a limited print of some sort, maybe with a variant cover or an extra chapter. Offering digital copies for lower-tier donations is good, too.

    2. I'd feel guilty asking for money and not giving something in return. I'm no beggar and don't want to be considered a charity case.

    3. You want to avoid things that are heavy or oddly shaped as they can be expensive to ship (and that takes money out of your crowdsourcing campaign.) Also avoid things like "your name on a special donor page at the back of the book." Nobody cares enough to actually read those.

Is it a book? Rewards might be a free e-copy at one tier, a free physical copy at a high tier and a free signed copy at an even higher tier (though if you're not a big name you won't get many of those pledges.) You can also offer prints of art from the book, possibly signed. Make them small and get 2-packs of 6x9 mailers from the dollar store. Without knowing what the product is it is hard to make suggestions but try to keep it tied to the product. If it is a video game maybe offer the soundtrack or exclusive in-game item. Also look at crowdfunding campaigns for similar items and see what they offer.

    1. Well Dan said in the Muscle post that he played it and found the graphics to be painful. He shouldn't stick to Chris Bores' level. Oh by the way, Chris took his new intro from Blue Television Games, unless anyone can use it.

  6. Blogger eating my comments:

I'm at the airport now and will be spending the next week at my company's home office. I'll likely have an opportunity to swing by the bookstore, any bets on if Bores's book will still be there?

off-topic been watching a lot of Derek Alexander's stuff lately (HVGN/Stop Skeletons From Fighting). I really got behind but his videos seem good as ever. I never understood why James didn't endorse him more or officially make the HVGN the brother of AVGN, but I guess it's good because his stuff's probably much better on it's own anyway.

    1. Yeah, I should start watching Derek more often. I loved the video he and James did on Loopin' Louie, though! :D

    3. Derek got quite a bit of promotion early on by winning the Outnerd the Nerd Contest (the one that Chris Bore-ess claimed was rigged). I have enjoyed some of his videos but really I am just worn out on people who think reviews need skits.

      Delete
    4. Derek is a good reviewer and he has diversify (no not that type) his style after retired the HVGN moniker, which was meant to be his own thing anyways after its original conception, i like SSFF (Stop Skeletons from Fighting).

buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut he did one fuck up awhile ago, the fact that he went for the normie opinion on gamergate in his Mighty n9 video, yeah.

I am willing to keep supporting him as long as he doesnt fuck up again or at the very least keeps his opinion on politics for himself and doesnt go the way of ProJared, MovieBlob, pretty much many of Channel Awesome and RebelTaxi

      The Virtue Signal way.

    5. Just rewatched the video. He does sort of gloss over Dina.
He briefly mentions GG when describing the backlash against her without any mention of her anti-GG views, or how she promoted them when harassing backers and abusing her position.
But the mention is so brief that it seems maybe he was trying(failing?) to keep his opinions unknown?

If I abandoned every entertainer that didn't share/express the same opinions as me, I'd pretty much have nobody to follow.

  8. Tuesday slipping away with no sign of "might not be able to finish till Monday." He's really crafting this- refusing to compromise his vision to meet a deadline. I think we just might be in for the greatest game review video in history.

  9. I'm betting he'll play the retirement card again...

    2. When he said he was coming back, I secretly guessed that it'd be two reviews and either be done or go on an indefinite hiatus.
I was pretty much right, count his unnecessarily split "Sewer Shark" as one, and don't count the shill videos, and he's only done two.
(I probably wouldn't win the pool with that criteria, though).

      Delete
    3. He hasn't quit, though. He said he thinks he's finally getting a handle on the feel of the new show- it just takes longer in the editing. I don't know if even Bores can back out after a tease like that. While he does love to promote upcoming things a lot more than he likes delivering on them, he has shot and is editing something. I say it drops Friday.

      Delete
    4. He says he has shot and is editing something. He also said he lost a contest because it was rigged, he invented a new branch of psychology, and everyone reading this blog is a devil worshipper.

      Delete
    5. Definitely on the same page there. This just doesn't smell like a complete lie to me. Typically, when Bores promises something great soon, it's bad and late, but it does come.

      Delete
    6. I may have overestimated him- he's uploaded two things today and neither are Chris Neo.

What's especially odd is that one is a review of bootleg Cuphead figures- it would make more sense that he feels the need to promptly fellate a company that sent him free stuff, but these are Mexican knockoffs.

I still hold out hope that we'll soon discover this "feel of the new show" he's talked about.

    2. It wasn't horrible, and I'll admit I didn't know about world 9-1 so I guess that's pretty cool.

His rant about Super Mario Bros. 2 - That's his opinion. Ok, whatever.

Super Mario Bros. 3, he mentions all the hype surrounding the game before it even came out but doesn't even mention that much of the hype came from the movie The Wizard.

    5. Good God... I mean, the childhood stories Chris tells here strike me as genuine. Everyone know Chris is a pathetic poser when it comes to retro gaming, but if ANYTHING were to ever be true it'd be getting an NES for his birthday and playing Super Mario Bros. The only issue is EVERYONE has an experience like that! It's not unique or interesting, no one needs to condescendingly explain Mario 1 to anyone ever! Even a complete dipshit like Bob Moviebob Chipman knew to root his godawful Mario 3 book in his own personal experiences growing up, because everyone's played the damn game. Also, freaking out about being able to get to level 9-1 with a Game Genie is stupid. The thing's a hex editor. Calling 9-1 a "hidden world" is like saying there's a hidden mustache on the Mona Lisa that you can uncover with a magic marker.

      Delete
    6. Next episode promises "all kinds of other worlds we can unlock" in SMB, and to "explore SMB in a way you've never seen before." I take it he means World -1 and that place you can overshoot the flagpole and run forever?

      Delete
    7. weird thing: i had a SMB cart where you COULDN’T jump over the flagpole. if you managed to jump that high, it’d just act like the flagpole was higher.
i thought people who claimed they jumped over were lying. after witnessing my friend do it, we used game genies to enable moon jump on both our carts. his you could jump over, mine you couldn’t.
i wish i’d kept that cart, it was probably a super-rare revision, but it looked like a regular super mario/duck hunt

      Delete
  22. I wasn't paying close attention to the video so there are probably more errors but a couple that I have noticed...

Mario did not come from Super Mario Bros. He was around before that.

Ghost N Goblins did not suck. It is actually very well designed. It is just hard as balls.

The "Nintendo" did not come out in fall of '85. The NES did. There were plenty of Nintendo home products released before then such as Pong consoles, Game N Watch, etc.

There was no crash for the entire video game industry. Those who played video games on computers or in arcades always had new games to play. It was only a console game crash and only in the USA.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. TRON came out around the time of the crash. Arcades were hopping.

      Delete
    2. I'm bugged by his claim that SMB was what changed everything. The NES changed everything, and SMB was a good game that made an apt pack-in for the new system. Bores speaks as if including, hypothetically, Tetris and Duck Hunt would have kept video gaming at a dull 1983 level, I guess forever.

      Delete
    3. The Nintendo is a nickname for nes.

      Delete
    4. @Anonymous Blogger

Is it? Why aren't the Game Boy, SNES, Virtual Boy, N64, Gamecube, GBA, DS, Wii, Wii U, 3DS or Switch also called the Nintendo?

It's sloppy writing on Chris' part at best.

      Delete
    5. It’s just not as used very often as NES. I should have said that I was speculating. It’s just that whenever The Nerd says “Nintendo game,” he usually means a game released on NES, not a game published by Nintendo themselves. Also the SNES is sometimes called the Super Nintendo.

      Delete
    6. As in just leave out the words “Entertainment System”

      Delete
    7. Havn't watched the video yet (might not at all)... but:

      1) Yeah Mario was a playable character in many games before SMB came around, and even had some cameos.

      2) The quality of Ghosts n' Goblins is subjective. I personally think it's a masterpiece. I could respect legitimate criticisms against it but "it sucks because it's difficult" is not really something you'd hear from a legitimate gamer.

      3) Everyone referred to the NES simply as "Nintendo" for years. I don't think it was until the GameCube came out that people didn't automatically know you were talking about NES if you just said "Nintendo".

      4) You're right that the crash was pretty limited. I was pretty young back then but my grandfather and uncles had me playing a lot of C64 and took me to arcades a lot, there was no shortage of new games. The computer gaming market might've actually surged about the same time. The homebrew scene certainly did.

(laughs) That's right, Zombie Steve! We're gonna be talking about video game history, which, uh, means it happened a long time ago! Video games all started when William Higginbottom from Livermore University programmed "Pong" in an attempt to make the most iconic video game that ever existed! "Iconic" is a fancy word that means super cool! It wasn't long before the nation of Japan decided they wanted their own Pong, which turned out to be Pac-Man! Bluh-hwa! Soon video games were so popular, they were building coin-operated ones so you didn't have to stay home to play video games! Now video games are everywhere- at home and in arcades! Maybe one day they'll invent a video game you can play while riding the bus! If that ever happens, your old pal Puppet Steve will be nineteenth with the news and act like he's first!

  26. "Super Mario Bros." wasn't the first game with worlds and stages in each of them. Capcom's "1942" (released in 1984) had eight islands, and four stages in each of them. The last one was the hi-point stage, and every other island, the 3rd stage, was against a giant plane. Namco's "Metro-Cross" (released earlier in '85) had 32 Rounds (four rounds in each "world") and the fourth round used the remaining time from the previous three.

And no, there are no new puppets, new letters taught, new educational techniques, or point to it all.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I am not as critical as The Alphabet Bunch as Irate Gamer or Chris Neo or Puppet Steve. For one thing, Alphabet Bunch has considerably more effort put into it than the other shows Chris produces.

That said, Chris needs to bring in some more voice talent. He simply does not have the vocal range to portray many different characters. Obviously he needs to create more Alphabet Bunch videos consistently but that is a consistent problem for Chris. The exception is Puppet Steve which is also right up there with Box Wars as one of the worst shows he has ever made.

      Delete
    2. I'm way harsher on Alphabet Bunch. It's not just more segments he needs- a good Sesame Street segment will last 20 years or more. If this were a project worth doing, he would need to get more puppets depicting more letters instead of spinning his wheels with M, T, and H whenever he feels like that's what he wants to do. But it's really pointless to make these anyway because they aren't his characters, the original 'Letter People' videos are better, and still-better stuff than the Letter People has existed since before the Letter People existed (Sesame Street again).

It's bad enough that he's re-chewing old cud on video game facts that have been widely known for decades and packaging it as a big exposé that he uncovered, but when a toddler can watch your videos and say "YEAH, WE KNOW" because this is the fifth video about what starts with M, you're significantly failing as a creator.

His voice talent isn't non-existent, though, and if the other problems were solved, his voice plus the audio modifications he throws in might be enough.

Doesnt help that he's been rebuilding his fanbase since GamerGate mostly consisting on shitposters and newbie normies, and now he claims that he has no ill will towards James Rolfe.....right, teh fact that he is buttbuddies with Alan Redigg (Bigal2k6) to try to win sympathy with people, really tells you the integrity of both, hell most of his former friends and followers from before he harassed Kyle (not Kyle Justin), left him, even the ones that were playin dumb and white knight his attacks and campaign against James Rolfe for 2 years, none of them look back at him afterwards, even recently, Razorfist (who i admit that i enjoy now to some extent, particularly his politicomedy videos) call him out on his manipulative double faced behavior when Emer passed away (and allegedly is no longer associated with him, Good!), and yes, just like with JFreedan, Asa was being a two faced manipulator then as well, and now he wants to go after people who had something negative to say about Emer.

I know there are several people on YT, like me, who watched them regularly. Your commentary was funny and on point, and you put a good deal of work into them. 1. Not surprised one bit. The guy playing him isn’t anything like Harrison Ford, but seeing that Harrison Ford hates Star Wars, I’m not surprised he wanted absolutely nothing to do with this movie.

    2. Shame on Kathleen Kennedy for taking away Lando's masculinity. That's the ultimate crime.

    3. For what it's worth, Harrison Ford enjoyed Solo and praised its lead actor:

    4. I’m still going to see it. After all it is Star Wars, and I never trust what critics say about Star Wars movies anymore because they made a commitment to bash every new Star Wars that comes out regardless.

    5. I found it to be a middle of the road Star Wars movie. Not the worst but far from great. It is pretty much Fast & Furious with Star Wars trappings

    8. um, guys... SPOILERS?!?
the movie just came out, could you wait at least until it’s out of theaters?

    9. To be fair, he did have a spoiler tag on his. I was neglectful and did not put one on my post. I will delete that and replace it with a new post. Sorry.

    10. @MacDragard. *SPOILER*

The character you speak of has appeared in other Star Wars media. There is a backstory there.

    11. Waiting until it's out of theaters is overkill. But I'd wait until Memorial Day weekend is over before dropping egregious spoilers, or only use the strong spoiler tags that must be clicked to read the content (not available on Blogspot as far as I know).

    12. I didn't even see the spoiler tag on the email notification of the comment, it just kinda bended in with the other info before the comment itself.

  37. 11 minutes of Hello Neighbor merch by Puppet Steve today. I despair of getting the new Neo today.

  39. Hmmm, he claims he couldn't find anything on those worlds on any internet forum. How hard was he looking? It took me only a few seconds to find world 9 videos on YouTube posted as far back as 2007. GameFaqs has a whole page of Game Genie codes including the YSAOPE+YEAOZA+ family.

  40. Good lord, Chris is milking this Game Genie thing for every cent he can get out of it. 3 parts for a Mario “””review”””? Really?
