There will be a Year End List

I am aware Bores posted a new IG videos the other day, however it's really more of an advertisement than an actual video so I feel it's not worth covering. Just Bores gushing about an Arcade replica of Dragon's Lair. It felt like Chris Neo again. Dull and not worth it.

He also did a short video for some no-name author about his book on NES games. In it he says "Super Mario Bros changed my life". *shudders* Moviebob flashbacks.

But yeah, I will be doing a year end list for the first time since 2016.

Sorry for the zero-effort post. Also, quit arguing with each other.

    1. I saw the video. I honestly think the older AVGN Simpsons game review was better.

-Salty Posts in the facebook group
    -The lackluster crossover
-Chris making George Floyd's death about himself and claiming he heard I can't breathe the day he was murdered.
    -The Paranormal Pandemic video

    1. Just for the hell of it here’s mine of the top of my head:
      10 underwhelming avgn crossover
9 dragons lair arcade mini pimping as ig episode
      8 tmnt/robocop vids (recycling)
7 ig arcade to console ports vid (errors)
6 fb post exaggerating ig fan vs ig “haters” “war”
5 fb post about getting booted from ghost group
4 ridiculous response to batdan’s comment on one of his ghost vids
3 ghost/paranormal stuff coming back so hard
2 fb post implying he might get killed if he reveals behind the scenes info about yt gaming with ref to debunked t hanks is a pedo conspiracy

    2. Actually I’d replace ten with the abundance of dick/jizz jokes in new ig vids. And for the hell of here’s my top ten best ig moments:
      10-5 ummm...uhh.. well...
      4 Simpsons treehouse
      3 avgn in puppet Steve
      2 ghostbusters
      1 dick Tracy
Ok so I could only come up with 4, and not saying those are super great, more like least bad, at least he put some effort into those 4

    4. The people that run Cinemassacre now are VERY picky over what is said in the comments. I was banned a couple years ago when I asked about Kyle Justin.

    5. Business is strictly business, Prince. It's very unlikely Cinemassacre would disclose serious business affairs to the common audience.

But as for why Justin left, imo, I'm guessing it could be a lot of reasons (eg like Bootsy, payment rows). One reason I heard though, it's because he wanted to dedicate more of his time to his family, which is fair enough.

You could try asking Justin himself about this, if..

      1. You can get past his agent.
      2. He's not bound by any legal contract to withhold revealing Cinemassacre's business affairs to his fans. (I'm inclined to believe that he is, but I'm not certain)
      3. He even feels like talking about it. And even if he did, you'd most likely be getting just one side of the story.

Do you know much about entertainment business, Prince, just asking?

But he's no longer affiliated with AVGN and hasn't been for years.

Probably why we hear variations of the theme song and not the original.

      Delete
    10. "New nerd room"? You mean the current one used for the last 12 years? I could believe that. He also helped with the Video Store room and the set for the "Jekyll and Hyde" trailer. As for him leaving, his original song is still used in some episodes (the Christmas variant was just used in the latest episode) so is it really monetary issues that caused his departure?

    2. I don't think Mike leaving necessarily means he had a falling out with James. Maybe he didn't want to work with the Screensaver guys anymore. Maybe with Covid it was too difficult doing videos with multiple people. Maybe his income from streaming has grown and it would be more profitable for him to do that than continue with Cinemassacre.

I am not going to pretend to know the details here but I do know I have been involved with group projects before and have seen people move on. I have moved on myself a couple of times. I'm all cases these separations were amicable.

  32. For the readers of this blog, which period do you think is AVGN’s peak vs the downfall where he wasn’t as good. Fir me 2006-2010 was the peak, 2011-2014 there were still good episodes but they weren’t as good (an exception being Ikari Warriors), 2015-2017 was a downhill slide with occasional good episode and 2018-present is where we are now with Screenwave.

  34. I might have said this in a previous comment but does anyone else think that LJN gets unfair shit sometimes because first off, they just publish every game and second some LJN games aren’t as bad as others say. Jaws is boring, Nightmare On Elm Street and Roger Rabbit are actually fun if the game’s RNG works in your favor, and The Punisher and Maximum Carnage are actually good.

    ReplyDelete
  35. It seems that James Rolfe and everyone else who acts like LJN the worst thing to ever happen to the video-games industry completely forget that (even before it became a front company for Acclaim) LJN was a publisher, not a developer.

In fact, the one thing which James should remember from his review of Beetlejuice on NES is the majority of horrible LJN games that he has slagged off were developed by legit companies which included the likes of Atlus, Beam Software/Melbourne House (who also made the WCW SuperBrawl game on the SNES), Sculptured Software (the people responsible for the 16-bit WWF trilogy), and even freaking Rare.

Sure, for the most part they deserve their bad reputation as garbage merchants, but it's a tad bit unfair that LJN gets solely blamed for this, and that no-one has ever criticized any of those developers for willingly churning out such poorly-made licensed shit for a quick buck.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Remember that AVGN is a character and it's all "part of the humor." I'm sure James Rolfe has known that LJN is a publisher for a very long time.

      Delete
    2. And yeah, like you said, LJN should've at least known better to NOT publish all those shitty games that gave them a negative reputation. Imagine if Chris Bores wrote a ghost book series and a publisher kept putting his books on the shelves despite their shit quality. I think it'd be pretty clear that they're a terrible publisher.

      Delete
    3. That got me wondering-- what are some other 3rd-party developers from the NES era that are known more for shitty games than good ones? Besides Acclaim and LJN, I'd say THQ and Bandai are up there.

      Delete
    4. Also Ocean @Andrew Schroy

      Delete
    5. @PrinceMario - Just realized that. Also, FCI put out a fair bit of garbage games, including Hydlide. (You could definitely argue either Bandai or FCI could be the Japanese LJN and Ocean.)

    6. I’ve said some of this before but here goes:
Of course tastes are entirely subjective, but I just looked up list of nes games on wp and sorted it by publisher to jog my memory, here’s what I think of the pubs mentioned plus some others I think are bad (nes-wise):
Ljn: 26 games, 4 are great 10 below average/bad with 7 that will (shameless self promotion of one’s shitty YouTube channel warning:) make it into my top 100 worst nes games video, 12 avg/good
Thq: 13 games, 2 are bad but I’ve grown to like them (both waldos) 2 are above average 9 are below average/bad with 5 of them making my 100 worst list
      Acclaim: 29 games, 5 great, 17 average/good and 8 below average/bad ,7 bad (all 7 in my worst 100)
      Ocean: 8 games, 3 average, 5 below avg/bad with 3 making my 100 worst
      Fci: 17 games, 3 great, 13 avg/good, 1 bad enough for my top 100
Bandai: 22 games, 6 great, 15good/avg, 1 bad enough for my list
I’ll save the other publishers (American soft works, hi tek expressions, Sony imagesoft, hot b, koei, mindscape, virgin interactive, maybe some unlicensed publishers if I’m feeling wacky) for later I need to go eat or sleep or something , oh yea I like jaws and hydlide

      Delete
    7. Yeah, the more I think about it, Jaws, while very flawed, was one of LJN's better NES games. I'd play that over Sharks on the Action 52 cart any day.

Going into 2021, I have said this before and I’ll say it again, Chris should try to evolve with the times and try to reach out to more modern gaming content creators such as Scott The Woz, Nathaniel Bandy, Tyler from Generation Gap Gaming, or he could even try Arin Hanson as he is very similar to Bores in terms of hating on beloved games. Sure most of them would likely say no but Chris can get a lot of new fans if he reaches out to just one of them and does a collaboration like he did with James Rolfe.

On top of that, Chris is terrible at making spontaneous commentary. Such a stream would certainly be entertaining but for all the wrong reasons.

    3. The AVGN Movie is not what you'd call a conventionally good movie. It's a B-movie that throws a lot at the screen, probably too much, and doesn't worry a lot about rules or logic. I enjoyed it based on a history of watching AVGN, knowing the in-jokes, liking James and being happy that he got a full-blown movie made. He'll make better movies, but this is a fun one to turn your brain off and marinate in.

Enough talent went into the film that, had Bores made it, the general reaction would be "where was all this talent over the last decade?"

      Delete
  45. I have a copy of the AVGN movie. As mentioned above, it is not a good film in the traditional sense but I find it passable as an homage to the schlock movies that James clearly loves. I will even give James credit that it is remarkable considering the budget behind it.

Chris on the other hand - he has no experience managing a project of this size. He would be in over his head, attempt too much work on his own, micro manage what he delegates to others and may end up violating copyright law by inserting other media into his movie.

It would simply be a terrible movie and I say that as a person who has a soft spot for low budget films.

    1. Thinking deeper, you know what? James' movie might be unusually good considering it's independent, crowdfunded and a directorial debut, though I don't study these things. A Bores 90-minute production of any kind would likely struggle to be considered an actual movie. Movies hinge on stories; Bores makes bunches of stuff happening.

    2. Also who would Chris get in his movie if he made one? Eric Allen and Brad Harp seem like they want nothing to do with Chris anymore and I have no clue what Scottie's situation is.

    3. So I have insight on Bores friendship with Eric and brad but no nothing about what’s up with Scottie? What makes you seem to think that about brad and Eric? Because they don’t appear in his videos? If that’s the case then the same observation would apply to Scottie. If it’s not or more than that what makes you seem to think that?

    4. There's also his friend who appeared in his Geektime podcasts (don't remember his name).

    5. If Chris made a movie, it would probably have a budget less than Birdemic. Even though Chris has a small fanbase, most people don't care about him or even know who he is. Any attempt at crowdfunding would bomb for him. And he doesn't get nearly enough views to save up for even a decent low budget movie (on Puppet Steve AND Irate Gamer). Needless to say, his E begging spoof would REALLY come around to bite him in the ass.

  46. This is off topic but what are your thoughts on the DMCA bill that Senator Thom Tillis wants to get through congress? If that bill is passed, it can negatively affect Chris’ videos for sure.

  48. Can't belive he didn't make a Home Alone 1&2 NES review with Macaulay Culkin from Cameo.com, yet he honored the 30th anniversary of Dick Tracy, a film nobody remembers nor cares about!
