It has been slow around here hasn't it? Very few videos from IG. Even the superfluous stuff like contests or update videos are nowhere to be seen. I don't feel like doing a redux recap now so here's some updates and other stuff I noticed. If you read the comments, you will have probably seen this.
From Facebook:
Bores mentioned that his upcoming IG video will have him play around 15 characters. Jeez, overkill much? I'm aware that some people require themselves to play multiple characters as they don't always have other people around to help. Take Linkara, he doesn't always have his friend Will around to play Snowflame or the Gunslinger. However, AT4W is put out on a weekly basis and only has a limited window to get people. Bores takes MONTHS at a time to put an episode out, and during this time he seriously can't get other people to help out? Take on a couple of roles?
He claims the reason that Brad Harp didn't reprise his role as the Genie is that he moved away, and found it easier to do it himself. Is that hard to call him and ask "Are you free? Want to spend a couple hours filming some lines for my review?" and then work the schedule around to do it. Especially when there's huge gaps in releases.
Maybe Bores is scared that people will like the other actors better than him? He seems to have that problem. That's why I'm suspicious that he wrote out the Wise Sage, or plans to push Eric Allen away and play the Sage himself.
Up Up Ubi:
Earlier this year, Bores did a "review" of the iOS game "Up Up Ubi", created by his (former?) artist DatBoiDrew. When I noticed that Bores removed the review and the link to Drew's site, I contacted him about it, wondering if he's still involved. Drew said he hasn't been in contact for a while and pointed out something interesting. Bores reviewed the TRIAL version of Up Up Ubi, not the full version. The game only costs $1 dollar, so Bores couldn't even bother to pay one measly dollar to support someone that helped him.
The review is back up now, but I get the feeling he also pushed Drew away. Not a good idea Bores. Very few people are willing to help you, and it's not going to get better if you push them away.
Skylanders Giants:
Bores actually did upload a new video the other day, but it was so damn boring that I can't bothered to write a recap on it. It's another preview of Skylanders: Giants. All that happens is Bores listing off the new figures, mentioning some E3 stuff, and some of the SKUs that will be available. It was a selfish video too as Bores even mentioned in the description that it won't appeal to everybody but he really wanted to make it.
He was right about one thing, that not everybody will like it. So much so he lost over 80 subscribers because of it. People on his Facebook even said "I'm unsubscribing". That's harsh.
One of my readers, Doresh, brought up a good point about his Skylanders obsession. He calls out Nintendo for being "too kiddy", yet here he is making multiple videos on a toy/game combo made specifically to drain money from kids (and parents). I'm aware that Skylanders has a massive adult following, but they know when something is intended for kids but can appeal to everyone. Unlike Bores who is all "Nintendo is kiddy" now. *rolls eyes*
The Future:
A couple days ago, Doug Walker announced that, after five years, he's retiring the Nostalgia Critic. He won't be gone forever as he'll do a video on a rare occasion, but the weekly format is done and he'll focus on other projects now.
This makes me wonder, what kind of future does Bores have? A lot of internet personalities seem to have it set. Gamers like Derek Alexander (HVGN), Joey DeSena (CotGW), Joe Vargas (Angry Joe), John Bain (Total Biscuit) and others all have reporting and reviewing jobs that can last a long time (look at Jeff Gerstmann). Movie people like James Rolfe (AVGN/Cinemassacre), Brad Jones (Cinema Snob) and Doug Walker (TGWTG) all have bigger plans as well, two of them have movies coming soon. Lewis Lovhaug (Linkara) is making a lot of connections in the comic book industry. Some already have steady jobs like Chuck Sonnenburg of SFDebris (he's a teacher) but he still gets paid plenty for his Star Trek and Sci-Fi reviews.
Where is Bores going? The gaming community treats him like a joke, he's an incompetent film "director", and I'm not sure about the paranormal community, but I get the feeling they treat him like a joke too.
My only guess is that he'll be forced behind the scenes, working under people that won't allow him to stick stock explosions in every shot. Maybe GotGame will save him.
Linkara, Brad, if you're reading this, think you can weigh in?
That's it for now. I recommend people play Tales of Graces F on PS3. Why? Because it has an awesome battle system and it's better than Final Fantasy currently is.
EDIT (9/22): Bores posted an update to his site yesterday.
New episode of
the irate gamer show is well underway. Finished taping a few days ago and
into the post production stages now. Suffice to say I played about 15
different parts in this one which oddly enough didn’t give me an identity
crisis lol. Stay tuned for more!!
game on!
Once again doing the identity crisis joke. Reminding us he's playing 15 characters. Going by this, expect it early October.
It is kinda sad to see Bores in this position. Wait, what the hell am I saying?
ReplyDeleteThis doesn't have much to do with anything (aside from the closing comment), but out of curiosity, what are your favorite Final Fantasy games, BatDan?
ReplyDeleteIV, V, VI, and IX. XII is pretty decent.
DeleteOh crap, I think I know why Bores' next review takes so long: Every one of his 15 characters probably has a different outfit, so he's probably constantly switching costumes.
ReplyDeleteThat might not make sense if these are just different personalities, but he probably thought that the audience wouldn't notice if he changes his personality. Seeing his usual acting, I can understand this.
And speaking about ToGF: Why do some JRPG developers feel the need to give their battle systems increasingly strange names? Atlus used the same (tweaked and improved) battle system for every main console entry in the Shin Megami Tensei series since Nocturne, and I don't think this battle system even has a name Oo
Anyways, the description of this game makes it sound like they borrowed from FFXII's Gambit System - which I think is the only somewhat brilliant aspect about FFXII that makes me wonder why nobody thought about borrowing it before, since it basically solves every problem people have with AI companions oO
As to SMT, I believe the system is called the Press Turn system, since using an enemy's weakness grants you extra turns. I'm not sure if this is the official designation. Your point still stands, though.
DeleteRight, I forgot. But I could swear it was not named in the Persona games Oo
DeleteStill, it sounds less insane than "Style Shift Linear Motion Battle System", "Active Dimension Battle" or "Battle Exalted Action Type".
I also don't get how Bores repeatedly insist "Nintendo is kiddy", yet he's fallen in love with Skylanders, which cost $60 or so for the game, the "Port Hole" of Power (really?), and three figures, then about $6 a figure after that. I grudgingly admit that seems like a cool idea on paper, but I'm still reluctant to join that crowd (I played the old Spyro games on PS1, and I think I'll get them on Playstation Network Store if I can find my PSP). Nintendo, on the other hand, has offered great games consistently for the past 27 years (31 if you include their arcade titles). I'm looking forward to Pokémon Black and White 2, the Zelda Wii U game, the Super Smash Bros. 3DS and Wii U games, and New Super Mario Bros. U. I'll look into that Deluxe Wii U with more memory, Nintendo Land, a dock for the controller, and some Nintendo eShop store credit when the price goes down and more people have them (I often find out about how new consoles work out at family or friends' houses before I get one myself).
ReplyDeleteAs for Bores' future: it looks bleak. Doug Walker just finished five years of Nostalgia Critic, and is starting a new show called Demo Reel (which is a movie-related show that looks at both old and new movies, and will have more contributors than just Doug on a regular basis). He even bought a studio so he won't just have to shoot behind his desk anymore! He also has some other projects down the line that I'm looking forward to. Lewis has met a few comic creators (He met the guy who made Booster Gold in the most recent storyline, and the guy who wrote Mightily Murdered Power Ringers apologized for making it in the review of said comic), and keeps expanding his show. The AVGN movie is just about finished, and the Schwarzenegger Games review has about 1.6 million views while the Silver Surfer IG is still not past 100,000. The Super NES vs. Sega Genesis retrospective as James himself has a combined 1.2 million views, the Fairchild Channel F History of Video Games also isn't past 100,000.
With Bores constantly backing away from the people who want to help him, taking months to upload a video that's only 5 minutes or so (I can upload videos that little within a day, if not several a day; and I have for my YouTube channel), and this plan to portray 15 characters alone, I can see him burning out pretty quick. The best I can hope for him at this point is to maybe get a job at a video editing company, since that seems to be his one strong suit; but I'm doubtful of who would want to hire him. It's really not a good sign when Eric "Wise Sage" Allen, the last person willing to appear in his videos besides himself; is seemingly no longer affiliated with him.
I haven't really played that many Final Fantasy games, but I've been trying to find a copy of The World Ends With You for months; as well as the DS port of Chrono Trigger. My opinion of Square Enix has gone down considerably. I heard Mind Jack was really stupid, and I'm also not looking forward to the Tomb Raider reboot. The best things they have going for them right now are Kingdom Hearts 3D Drop Distance and rescuing True Crime Hong Kong and rebranding it as Sleeping Dogs.
That will be all. See you later, Dan.
That looks bleak indeed.
DeleteAnd Squeenix didn't have anything to do with Mindjack, since it was developed by a small company called feelplus. Then again, they published it without any kind of quality control because they are apparently desparate to publish more and more Western-style games...
And the Tomb Raider game is made by Crystal Dynamics, which was bought by Squeenix (similar to Eidos) in order to act as their Pixar to their Disney. They don't actually develop all that many games themselves anymore, which makes it all the more baffling why their own games get progressivly worse Oo
Bores definitely is running towards a dead end. The "Angry Review" trend is starting to die out in my opinion. The genre is over-saturated and Bores is not going to stand out from the crowd of hundreds of people who are in on it.
ReplyDeleteTo conclude, everyone else will move on to bigger things, however, Bores will most likely get nothing out of being the Irate Gamer. It brought him nothing but infamy and ridicule, and to add insult to injury, his most well known fans consist of pre-teens who are obviously not very demanding when it comes to entertainment.
Once the genre finally drops dead, Bores will probably continue to make videos without an audience (or at least a very tiny one) and will be trapped in this limbo forever, and only then will he realise just how little he got out of his e-fame.
Yikes, that sounds like a fate worse than hell.
DeleteI actually hope he goes somewhere afterwards (like into video editing, because I can actually see him doing pretty well in that). Then again, Bores is a guy who follows fads. He will probably attempt to create another channel based around something else. However, without YouTube's help this time around, it will probably go nowhere.
DeleteAlso BatDan, how would GotGame save him? It's a website that would be devoid of traffic if it wasn't for Chris. So when he falls into obscurity, what exactly can he offer them?
That's a very good point you make about Bores's future. He's 30 years old now and it seems all he has ever done is sit at home doing crappy videos. In fact, we have never seen him step outside of the house (Except during E3 and the Gotgame sketch video). Does he have any plans for the future? Is he really going to make crappy videos til the day he dies? That's a sad life right there.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm glad to know you are playing Tales of Graces F, BatDan! :D I love the game a lot and I'm shocked that Gametrailers gave the game a mediocre rating.
Actually I believe he runs a business (or at least that's what he said in his net noise interview or maybe it was one of bat dans earlier posts
DeleteI talked to people who knew Bores growning up, one of which had proof.
DeleteBores claimed to be a professional videographer after failing out (or possibly being kicked out) of school. He had one gig that he screwed up royally. He never went as far as to apply for an LLC (hell, I don't even think Y2B or Irate Entertainment were ever legit "companies")
Aside from that, I also heard he works at a failing (or already out-of-business) Arts and Crafts shop, owned by his family.
I figured that all the Y2B Productions flaggings were illegal. I looked up to see if there was a copyright on it and found nothing.
DeleteI get the feeling that his mom was behind those flaggings. Considering how we see her react and respond to haters, this wouldn't surprise me.
If you're looking for a good RPG that isn't Final Fantasy, I can greatly recommend Baten Kaitos Origins for the Gamecube. Engaging story, unique battle system, awesome art style - it's an amazing game.
ReplyDeleteSee, it's funny that you say I'm "making connections" in the industry, since I don't really see it that way. XD
ReplyDeleteI've been extraordinarily lucky that several in the industry have seen my videos and like them. Most of the time, it's been people who have done one aspect of it - for example, the cover artist to Nightcat - not involved with any of the actual creative decisions of the book, but still did a kick-ass cover. Dan Jurgens, as far as I know, has not actually watched my show. He's always at FallCon and SpringCon (I'm pretty sure he's a local boy) and he was nice enough to take some time out to film that with me real quick, and I've met him several times before at the aforementioned conventions. Most recently, Jay Allen Sanford, who was the CEO of Revolutionary Comics after Todd Lauren was murdered and was the writer of the Vanilla Ice comic, commented on the videos and liked them, providing history about Revolutionary that I wasn't aware of. I'm pretty sure he's not the most active in the industry (beyond promoting collected reprints of the better biography comics Revolutionary made).
The highest profile people that I'd say I've had say they like my show were Gail Simone and Sterling Gates. And even then, I wouldn't say I'm on a basis where I can say I'm "connected" to them. ^_~ Sterling originally saw my Athena review and LOVED it and I'm pretty sure he's seen more than that, but I've only ever talked to the man once and he's a pretty awesome guy who donated the trades of the New Krypton arc to me. With Gail, it's much harder to say. Back when she was on Comic Book Resources, she made a thread about how awesome the show was and thought it was hilarious and nowadays seems to rarely, if ever, speak to me. It's possible I offended her (though I doubt it - Gail is not one to be quiet about such things) or there's just never been any opportunity for us TO actually talk to one another or the like beyond tweets or her forum. I'd say a more likely explanation is that since I have a tendency to be loud and harsh and criticize DC for its mistakes, she probably doesn't want to make a big show of the fact that she likes my work, since it could be interpreted as a sign that she agrees and, well, office politics and all of that.
But as I said, I honestly don't know and anything I say on the subject is purely speculative. If there's one other person who's SLIGHTLY more high-profile that I've actually talked to more it's Tom Waltz, the author of Silent Hill: Sinner's Reward, Silent Hill: Past Life, and the writer of the Silent Hill: Downpour game. We've never had a spoken conversation with one another, but he liked the brief Sinner's Reward review I did a few years back that he donated some more of his comics to me and we've exchanged several e-mails, most recently I'm waiting to hear back from him on some questions I had about Downpour's story.
For length limits, I'm going to talk about my thoughts on internet reviews in the next comment.
Lewis, if you ever get the chance to write Teen Titans, promise me you'll retcon the shit out of that title
Delete@BatFlashLantern:
DeleteI fear the almighty editors will only allow him to make an Elsword story -.-
Then again, you'd basically have to retcon half of the new continuity to make the original Teen Titans work again.
John Bain is the real name of TotalBiscuit.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why you would choose to say that you don't know his name, instead of doing a quick search on Google, but now you know it.
Thank you.
DeleteAnd now we come to the topic of the future. See, here's the thing - I don't entirely agree with Doug's decision to end the Nostalgia Critic, but hey, it's armchair quarterbacking and I don't know the long-term business plans of Channel Awesome nor do I contend that I know better. I would've probably waited until Demo Reel had established itself, maybe take a month off from Nostalgia Critic first and churn out a buffer of episodes so he could then devote a lot of time to Demo Reel, if he needed to, and THEN end the series. However, from a story perspective it made more sense to end it with To Boldly Flee, but again, not my show, not my decision, and I look forward to where things go.
ReplyDeleteSee, Spoony talked about this briefly during his commentary and it got me thinking a little, and it got viewers thinking about it with the end of the Nostalgia Critic - this question of "what are you going to do when the bottom falls out of this?"
My question is: why is everyone ASSUMING the bottom is going to drop out on this? New Media, and by that I mean internet-based programs, are barely ten years old, right? Television has existed for about 70-80 years. Movies for about a 100. Radio even longer than that. Comic books have existed for about 80 years. And we just assume that our medium is going to end soon?
Ummm... no. We have not even BEGUN. Review shows are not going to go away, either. Television shows reviewing material exist in various forms. Hulu & Blip are both working on creating original content that's strictly web-based. Rooster Teeth is arguably the most popular independent new media company (I don't have figures, so I could be entirely wrong there) with a show that has lasted, what, ten years? I don't watch the Guild, but that's still around, isn't it? While James Rolfe is a filmmaker, that hasn't stopped him from producing fairly regular web content for several years now and I'm pretty sure he will continue to make regular web content for years to come, a lot of it being reviews in various formats.
The reviewer landscape is changing, with less emphasis on angry viewing, but people still watch the reviews of bad media if they're entertaining, it's just there's a growing need for full analysis in it alongside positive reviews, as well. Mystery Science Theater 3000 lasted ten years of riffing on bad movies and Rifftrax & Cinematic Titanic have proven that people still love making fun of crap.
Congressional bills attempting to control the internet will continue to come and we will continue to fight them - the price we pay for the freedom we possess is eternal vigilance. In the end, they WILL lose. The MPAA and the RIAA WILL lose. Smarter heads will EVENTUALLY prevail as new generations rise who understand this stuff better, whose attitudes have shifted as they have watched the world they're inheriting be forced to change its ways.
In the end, even if SOPA HAD passed, it wouldn't stop what I'm doing and it wouldn't stop me from ripping bad comics to shreds - it'd just make me even more determined. NO ONE ELSE decides when I'm done. *I* decide when my show is over. *I* decide when I want out. The only other problem is when the audience moves on, but it's my responsibility to always entertain them so they'll never WANT to move on.
In short, you want my thoughts about our future? I think we've got a long one ahead of us.
Thank you for your input Lewis.
DeleteOne day, we'll get the point where a younger generation will take over the MPAA and RIAA and properly consult how the internet works to all the old farts that are angry their toilets have to be covered in gold instead of platinum.
Thankfully, I don't see a day when we'll have something like the FCC on the internet. "You cursed! $50,000 dollar fine!"
Yes, The Guild is still going. According to Wiki, a new season is coming in October.
On your "connections"
DeleteWell, to some those can be seen as connections. It's probably a wise idea to keep them in mind for the future. Who knows when they'll come in handy?
I think Lewis makes a lot of good points, but I think what BatDan meant with this post is that the angry reviewer genre is getting stale (which I agree with).
DeleteAnd Lewis, may I suggest joining Facebook if you want to make more connections in the comic book field?
No, I was thinking of the future of reviews in general. Not angry reviewers.
DeleteThough, thinking that reviewers are done in general is ignorant.
DeleteWhat I mean is the people that have currently built a name for themselves. There's always potential for new reviewers out there. What's the future of people that are doing well right now. That's what I was referring to.
Reviewers who are just 'angry' went out of fashion ages ago. The ones who have endured are those who take the time to articulate their genuine misgivings so that they're not just screaming a torrent of abuse. Bores primarily relies on pulling faces and using stock effects, and very rarely even attempts to construe a point that's unique or relevant to the game he's reviewing. When he does, it's almost always a positive one anyway, which obviously goes against the whole 'Irate Gamer' thing. Spoony, NC, AVGN, Angry Joe etc all get angry and scream at the camera and swear and so forth, but they're always screaming ABOUT something, something demonstrable and something explicable. What it boils down to is that a review has to be a review first and foremost - style alone (or lack thereof) cannot a good show make. In all honesty, it's amazing that IG has lasted as long as he has done with so little variation in his material, so I guess he deserves credit in a bizarre way.
DeletePersonally I think reviewing has a pretty secure future, as for 'Angry' Reviewing I guess like movie genres it will pass in and out of fashion. Personally I enjoy a bit of fulmination now and again and if a joke is good it's good.
DeleteThat being said a lot of people will of course try to ride the bandwagon, and when it gets overexposed and people tire of it the weaker elements will drop off and majority of internet personalities will move on to the next trend. However the hardcore fans of angry reviewing will remain and therefore the demand for such people will persist.
It's somewhat like WWII FPS games, you have a period where they're everywhere during the period of 1998-2007 and then Modern Warfare comes along and changes everything. Now there are very few WWII based shooters but generally speaking the ones that do come along are fairly good like Wolfenstein and Red Orchestra, and certainly one can't deny that the period is still popular in the strategy game market.
In conclusion, it's not over yet.
I guess it depends what you mean by "reviewers".
DeleteIf by "reviewer" you simply mean "someone who reviews things", yeah they'll be around forever.
If by "reviewer" you mean "someone who reviews things as a character, with integrated storylines and unnecessary cameos and crossovers", then I think we've got enough already.
I'm not saying that review shows should be barebones and without creative and unique aspects, I'm just saying review shows shouldn't try to all be creative and unique in exactly the same way (obviously counter-productive).
I think this talk about future is less about the disappearence of internet reviewers in general and more about whether or not the current internet reviewers have any backup plans in case their fame is waning.
DeleteLots of reviewers have other skills (Spoony has a CS degree). At very least they can work fast food or retail.
DeleteBores has one skill, editing, and even that he's not exactly pro at. At future job interviews they'll wonder about the long gap in his employment and lack of training, then they'll look online and see a man notorious for his questionable ethics and move onto the next application.
Doesn't Bores have another job, can he really support himself off of YouTube alone? Especially since he's not that popular anymore?
DeleteI won't say internet reviewers will be done for but when it comes to the whole angry reviewing/character portrait for reviews, I feel the ideas have dried up. Nowadays I much prefer watching those that put informative at the very top and put humour/individual sketches within a review at a lower priority. The level of sketches in the Jimquisition I feel is more appropriate and at the same time I can listen to what he says about the subject at hand. I feel I couldn't get the same from Nostalgia Critic's final review with Scooby Doo. That to me was completely cluttered with all the gags in the review. Had it not been for the past and future Critic as well as the guardian angel returning, the review would have only been half as long.
DeleteI gave up on Nostalgia Critic about a year ago when his ongoing jokes simply went on for too long and found them to be more and more distracting in his reviews. I also felt the show was running out of ideas for what to review. When you cover all the really bad stuff such as Batman & Robin, Super Mario Bros. The Movie, Garbage Pail Kids, Battlefield Earth and many other notable bad movies that he's covered, what else is there to go for? This is the same reason why I lost interest in the weekly reviews from Linkara. Not only was I not a big fan of comic books to begin with, I felt by last year all the bad stuff was covered and anything else I'd see wouldn't be so much of a shock. This is no offence to you Lewis but I was entertained by your videos back in the day but now I feel a weekly review that's usually 20-30 minutes long is some heavy watching for me, especially when I'm not always keen on the review's subject.
As for Doug Walker giving his Nostalgia Critic videos a rest, I have to give him respect for knowing when the show needs a long break. While one could say he should have stopped in 2009 or something, we'd only say he should have continued for longer than that. I don't know what to expect from Demo Reel but if this is more sketch-based then don't expect me to tune in that often, especially since I really can't stand those anniversary specials.
@Fattoler: And then you have angry gamers like El Presador who do review modern shooters and such, and they still manage to get a dedicated fanbase. Presador had a bunch of people going for his gimmick for a time, especially when he acted like a big PS3 fanboy for a while. Then he pissed off a ton of PS3 fanboys when in one video he basically said "You thought I was serious? It's just a console, guys!" That was unforgettable.
Deletei am cerebro500 and i think is the first time i comment here although i always read the articles and the comments.
ReplyDeletei think internet reviews will exist forever like comic books and videogames. the problem is that there are people like the irate gamer that are only doing this for money and not entertaiment.
even the archfiend (even if people like him or not) entertains people. i am fan of this blog and i hope it would continue for a long time. good work batdannight.
Hey Batdan, I've got to thinking. Have you ever thought about joining channel awesome? You and Lewis seem to be good friends, and you seem like the kind of guy to make, if not video reviews, at least text reviews of things.
ReplyDeleteThat's not going to happen.
DeleteThe text articles have been phased out as nobody was reading them. Plus, they aren't taking any new people for a loooong time. Unless it's Blistered Thumbs.
@BatDanNight:
DeleteThere's also the slight problem that you technically don't make reviews. TGWTG also showed in the past that they don't quite tolerate videos/text with the IG as the focus.
But even if that would not be a problem, there IS the problem of TGWTG being so crowded that you would probably get LESS attention from solely focusing on that site as a newcomer, since TGWTG fans already have a hard time watching the videos of all their favorites Oo
YouTube is doing another purge. IG lost over 200 subscribers yesterday. Yes it's a purge since other channels lost subs yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI'm surpised Batdan. You actually think Chris might not have a future? This is Bores we're talking about man. As time goes on and opinions change, he'll jump onto whatevers popular at the time to keep his "business" afloat. He's like a colony of roaches: annoying, persistent, and adaptable. Even if his account were to shut down today, he'd claw his way back to the spotlight by any means nessicary.
ReplyDeleteHis account shutting down is highly unlikely, but would probably be the death sentence for Irate Entertainment, since he will probably have a much harder time becoming YT partner this time around.
DeleteHe might convince GotGame to take over ALL his videos, but GotGame probably has a slightly smaller audience than Youtube...
Calling someone a colony or roaches is a bit harsh. Chris is bad, but he's not that bad.
DeleteAs for his future he'll probably reach the point where realises he's achieved nothing and move wearily along into middle-age and a mid-life crisis. Or he'll become a video editor and bounce back, not to internet stardom (not that he really had any) but certainly I'm sure he'd feel better about himself.
or maybe he is going to be bad forever
DeleteIf Chris started another YouTube channel, I highly doubt it will reach the "popularity" of his IrateGamer channel. Remember, YouTube helped him all those years ago. I doubt they're going to reach their hands out to him again. He will most likely jump onto another trend only to quickly die out.
Deletehe's like chris-chan
ReplyDeletetime is working against him and yet he thinks he's in the clear even as everything points to a state of emergency
I swear neither of them have ANY CONCEPT of time
Over the next few years I predict he will be nothing but a ghost of YouTube and gaming.
ReplyDeleteBy then more new people will come like Peanut butter gamer (Who is really great at reviewing he is very original) and everyone will have moved on from Irategamer because right now he is losing popularity in 08 he was infamous for the AVGN scandal thing now people say "Oh yeah I think I remember him"
As for Channel Awesome and Cinemassacre I doubt they will lose views or popularity anytime soon all the characters they have are so compelling and the shows are written perfectly, Hell channel awesome even has bought a STUDIO what does Chris have? A basement and maybe 150 games?
Overall it's progress I look forward to the fall of Irategamer in the few years to come.
Right, there are some pretty fresh and new reviewers on Youtube, so I fear the future of this blog is bleak XD
Deletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WR7xnJMDeg Rob's getting out of control now.
ReplyDeleteSeriously? Okay, I love both FiM and FFVI, but even if I didn't like the former as much as I do, I certainly wouldn't be such an obnoxious twat toward those that do. I understand that some of us bronies can be a bit aggressive about our fandom, but I still think assfucks like that tool just as bad, if not much worse! Besides, this is the internet, ponies are definitely not the worst thing that anyone has done with Final Fantasy VI. Also, what kind of idiot names himself after Silent Bob then does a rant video?
Delete@lordlaharl:
DeleteI have nothing against FiM, but man, some people are acting like this is the first cartoon they ever watched oO
And who names himself after Silent Bob and makes videos that involve TALKING Oo ?
"I have nothing against FiM, but man, some people are acting like this is the first cartoon they ever watched oO"
DeleteDCAU FTW, bitches!
But seriously, I think you guys should stop watching this kind of stuff. I mean there's always going to be haters around. I don't like MLP myself, but I know this kind of people and I've found that it's easier to be calmed and indifferent than to be pissed-off.
okay
ReplyDeleteso I had a dream last night that I somehow ended up being a character on the Irate Gamer's show. Upon realizing (in the dream world) the true scope of the horrors I had been forced into, I was afraid to look at comments on Irate Gamer-related sites and the videos that I was in for fear people would be hating on me because I was in an IG video. All I did end up seeing was people criticizing my character's name (which was an awkward, implausible corruption of my real name) so that's fair. But I was angry that I'd been roped into IG's video into the first place (what, was I drugged or something? did I not realize oh hey the guy talking is Chris Bores? wtf dream self) so I set off to fight him, it didn't go so well since I'm a good bit smaller than him and not athletic in the slightest so I didn't exactly get to do much except try to keep kicking him in the balls. (Didn't work too well.)
Anyway then I decided it wasn't worth it? or something, and agreed to stay as a character in his videos. Then for whatever reason he decided to let me write the script for one of his shows, and gave me a game to talk about. As a jab to him I went and did as much research as I could on the history of the game (it was part of a franchise - and no it wasn't a real game so don't be asking for it), detailing the other games in the franchise and how groundbreaking they were before I got into the game IG wanted me to review. That's all I remember from the script-writing.
I do remember though making a second script in case IG didn't like my first one and filling it with as many IG cliches and stupidity as I possibly good. This franchise was a well-known franchise, but the game IG reviewed was a somewhat broken, difficult puzzle spin-off of the game. As a jab to him, one of the lines was "After doing some research, I've found there's a whole franchise based off this! Who the fuck thought that would be a good idea?" For comparison, that would be like taking Pokémon Trozei and then saying "AFTER PLAYING TROZEI I found out there's a whole other set of Pokémon games!" It just didn't make sense which is why I put it in there.
That's all I can remember of that dream. It would be legitimately funny to be in an IG video though ^^ if only
I wouldn't worry too much about starring in the IG show. Characters NOT played by Bores are usually a lot more popular, which is why they appear so rarely :D
DeleteAnd man, what a glorious IG moment this would be.
Speaking of... does anyone think he'd be a lot better if he'd just drop any pretense of being "legit" and just starts parodying his own show Oo ?

ReplyDeleteHi there, dude from the Cynic haters group who think are better than others.
DeleteActually I'm independant from said group
ReplyDeleteI don't think of myself as better than Linkara or anyone else from TGWTG. I just can't stand the fact that the internet treats them like they are gods who can do no wrong and praises every little thing they do no matter how bad it is and even goes out of their way to record it (TV Tropes making Big Lipped Alligator Moment a trope?...oh puleasee. We all know the net has a hard on for Nostalgia Chick but isn't that taking it too far?)
Deletelinkara is the only reason why i enter the thatguywiththeglasses page now that the nostalgia critic is gone
Deleteand you know there are videos of the nostalgia critic and linkara that i like and there are some videos of them that i don't like. not all people treat them like gods . you have to look for them
Delete@Invisible Crane:
Delete1. Welcome :D !
2. Why do all our haters don't know how to properly use the Reply button Oo ?
3. Dough didn't INVENT this trope, he came up with a name for it. Scenes of random nonsense that are never mentioned again have been a stable of cartoons and other movies for years. If you know a clearer, more universally accepted name for this trope, please contact tvtropes.
4. I don't recall anyone here reacting like a fanatical lunatic to Linkara's comments.
And AFAIK, Linkara gets the most flag from the TGWTG fanbase because of his storylines inside his videos, which quite a lot of people seem to hate. Personally, I've nothing against storylines (even though the current one isn't exactly setting my world on fire, but maybe that'll change in the finale).
@Invisible Crane
DeleteY'know, you're the exact kind of prick I was talking about in one of my past comments. You know, the kind who flips his shit the moment anything you don't care about receives the slightest about of praise.
@Invisible Crane
DeleteALL HAIL KING SPOONY!
There's a trope named after a line from Avengers: United they Stand. A show that was cancelled so fast I didn't even have time to form a proper opinion of it before youtube came along. I don't know if that's as big a deal as you think.
DeleteAnd tropes named by Captain Planet, The Care Bears, and He-Man, despite all of these cartoons being mocked more often than praised.
DeleteLet's not forget "Ruined Forever" which comes from the Transformers Wiki of all places...
DeleteThe whole thing about "angry reviewing" is it's really bottlenecked itself more than anything else and it's pretty much down to three things.
ReplyDeleteFirst is saying "shit" and "fuck" to a game degrades it's impact after a while with the viewer becomes desensitized, thus creating the reviewer to try and up themselves each time and there's only so many times one can do this until you're either totally devoid of ideas or reach unacceptable levels of vulgarity. (case in point "The Gaming Rapist").
Another issue is the whole mentality of only reviewing NES games (and to a lesser extent Genesis/Mega Drive and SNES titles), this is really down to the majority of "angry reviewers" being American or Canadian and utilizing their childhood nostalgia, and then being emulated by foreign makers too. There's only so many NES games and literately every single one has been covered now. I'm astounded that virtually no one covers Commodore 64 titles, considering it was the most popular computer system until the advent of cheap PC's in the 2000's, it even outsold the NES!!!
Modern games rarely get the angry treatment, but in all fairness, there are very few games nowadays that are actually "bad" (what is there now? Raven Squad & Turning Point off the top of my head), people confuse unoriginality with being bad now. Which is simply not the case. Saints Row is unoriginal as it's a rip-off of GTA, yet in a lot of respects is superior.
But, There's only so many games you can cover without stumbling on someone elses feet, so The phrase "The Nerd already did it" is now almost as synonymous as animated comedies' "The Simpsons already did it". I know it's a free country and anyone can review whatever they wish, but the issue really derives from there's only so much to say about a game.
Finally, There's the actual knack of reviewing said game/movie/comic as well. A good reviewer will find content/humour to derive from the game to talk and joke about. A terrible reviewer will add totally nonsensical and unrelated sketches/storyline to pad something out that they clearly have no knowledge on, making the whole endeavor pointless and their worth as a journalist irrelevant.
I'm not claiming I'm the greatest reviewer in the world, Hell I've been extremely fortunate to be where I am with my mediocre skills. But that's really how I perceive it in all honesty.
The lack of Commodore 64 reviews astounds me, too. Maybe it's because the stereotypical angry reviewer only reviews console games, and the C64 is more of an actual computer Oo ?
DeleteThis whole "reviewer dibs" thing is incredibly stupid. If anyone would take this seriously it would damage the internet more than SOPA ever could. The only problem is running out of original jokes to make (especially ones about the most glaring issues), and some reviewers get there a lot faster than others (whether they make it intentional or not).
Modern games aren't exactly the worst games EVAR, but at least they feature pretty hilarious bugs and glitches.
To be fair Commodore 64 games are hard to get a hold of. Even if you can get it to run on something like dos box it's even harder to get them to play properly anymore.
DeleteThose games were terribly simplistic and many were multi-player centric. There was a game I liked as a kid called Mail Order Monsters that while there were computer 'encounters' the other player had to play the generic computer monster.
I've been watching through some of Paw's old videos and I just watched his top 9 gaming moments/composers series again. This series of videos did take Paw a long time to make and put together but unlit Bores each one of them was worth the time it took for them to come out. One other thing, all the time those videos were in the making he still produced dozens of other videos between them. All I can say now is that special effects, editing and animation are not legitimate excuses for Bores at all.
ReplyDeleteOne other thing I noticed is that while they took a while to come out each one was loaded with massive amounts of substance! Each section coming in at over 20 - 30 mins. All the time you can see that the ideas of it turning into an epic evolved as they were made but the overall idea is quite obvious after the second video ending.
Just to note-- HappyConsoleGamer did a movie too, but for free. What did you think of it, if you've seen it? (Be warned-- RetroGamer3's in it, and we know how bad his reputation is!)
