It has been reported that Ralph Baer, the father of video games, creator of the Magnavox Odyssey, had passed away. He was 92.
Baer's contributions helped form a hobby that is enjoyed by millions, and even in his last days he was glad to discuss his time working on the Odyssey.

Oh crap, that's sad.
ReplyDeleteMy condolences to his relatives.
I'd rather you hadn't mentioned Bores here, it doesn't seem appropriate to use someone's death as a catalyst to attack IG. We all know he sucks, that's why we read the blog. We don't need to be reminded of it in everything. This entry really should have just been the first paragraph.
ReplyDeleteRIP Ralph Baer.
Alright
Deletethanks for editing the article man.
DeleteWait, there was more to the article? Whatever, if he edited it from the suggestion someone gave than Batdan probably didn't feel too strongly about it either.
ReplyDeleteNonetheless this is incredibly sad, he brought a great contribution (or pioneered it, at the least) to people around the world, and indirectly got many people through tough times or rough patches in their lives. Bless him.
(Also long time lurker first time commenter, regular stuff like that, hello everyone!)
I became a gamer since 1989 when I got my first console: the Nintendo Gameboy, followed by an NES after that. I didn't hear about Ralph unitl G4TV's annual video game awards and I became fascinated to know more about him and found out that he's an amazing person.
ReplyDeleteReally sad to hear the news. R.I.P
The video game community has lost a great pioneer and the entire world has lost an amazing human being.
ReplyDeleteRIP Ralph Baer.
Damn. Just damn I will miss him and all he has done for the gaming community my thoughts and prayers go out to his family
ReplyDeleteR.I.P Ralph Baer
You've done the right thing, Batdan. I also want to make it clear I wasn't being critical of you in my previous comment, I just think we can all sometimes get our perspectives a little confused and occasionally forget what's really important. And, without wanting to be a hypocrite by bringing up you-know-who (especially as this can apply to a lot of internet personalities and people in general), it's good to see someone who has the humility to recognise when they've made an error and rectified it. This article is now what I'm sure you always intended it to be, a nice tribute to someone who had a big part in videogame history.
ReplyDeleteOf course, if Bores does in fact make his own post about the subject (or his lack of one within the next week or so, or he does one three weeks after the event), then it will be entirely appropriate to call him out on it.
I'm curious to know if other game reviewers such as James Rolfe, Pat the NES Punk, and Angry Joe will do a tribute to him at some point this week...
DeleteOne of my old (unfinished, unreleased) RPG Maker games featured a character named after him. The character was an eccentric scientist with an equipment upgrading shop. Later in the game I thought he'd be able to join the party as well. I still would like to use that character someday.
ReplyDeleteI also remember at "Video Games Live" in Tucson, AZ.
DeleteThey got him on a Skype call on the projector and he talked to the audience. He seemed like a cool old guy. He was proud of the advancements in gaming, not at all bitter about the growing amount of violence in video games.
Goodbye, Ralph Baer. Without your contributions; the video game industry as we know it would not exist. You will be sorely missed.
ReplyDeleteR.I.P Mr. Baer. Your contributions to technology were amazing.
ReplyDeleteRest in peace, Ralph Baer. If it hadn't been for you, the video game industry would not be the same today.
ReplyDeleteNot just wouldn't be the same. It just plain wouldn't BE, probably.
DeleteVideo games would have come along, I have no doubt; but Ralph still started it all. In 1970 there were games played on oscilloscopes at universities and computer labs, but Ralph's brown box was literally the first game played on a TV screen. If the Odyssey hadn't been made, and Nolan Bushnell hadn't ripped off Pong after seeing it at a trade show, the industry would have gotten a late start. For one example, we never would have gotten Pac-Man, because when Toru Iwatani glanced at that pizza with a slice missing, there'd have been no industry demanding new ideas- or a different one that wasn't ready for Pac-Man yet.
DeleteThe perfect song for Baer... RIP. :-(

Farewell to the pioneer of the pioneering age of video games. Thanks for all of the grand games that followed from his efforts.
ReplyDeleteInteresting video from the Archfiend and what he apparently really feels about AVGN and IG:

DeleteI apologized for the last comment I made. It was really gross.
DeleteBut the truth is I despise Archfiend and I swore to myself that I would never watch another video from him again.
New AVGN episodes are up! As part of the "Twelve Days of Shitsmas* marathon.

BTW, some of the comments on the second video are rather immature... XD
I just watched the Lethal Weapon review. My sense of humour kinda sucks but I did laugh at the ending.
DeleteHere's a review of a book he wrote: http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/vgbooks/vgbooks-inthebeginning.htm
ReplyDeleteThe AVGN movie is finally available on Blu-ray, but international shipping is not an option

I've already ordered my copy. I already bought the digital version, but aside from liking to have physical copies of things, I'm excited for the bonus features, and ESPECIALLY excited about the Nostalgia Critic review.
DeleteHmm, maybe they'll be selling copies at MAGFest next month.
DeleteDamn IG either killed him intentionally to silence the truth or IG's retardation gave him a heart attack
