More Pointless History...

The end of Summer is fast approaching. Kids are going back to school, the weather is getting cooler, TV shows come back, but one thing that remains constant is Chris Bores’ lack of talent.
There was no video Tuesday, but we’ve got one for Friday. Remember how he was so dedicated to three videos a week, but then went down to two, but now he can barely do one.
It’s a new History of Video Games, hoo boy. Four months after the last one. At a length of 5:18, it won’t make a dent.

*reads title* “Atari Console Video Games 1978-80” Okay good, he’s not going to do just 1978 like he said he would in the last video. Maybe he realized that covering a single year was a beyond idiotic idea.

0:03 - 1:14: It’s 1978, mentions how Atari spent $5 million on marketing (citation needed), shows some modern stock footage when he mentions the $5 million, shows a bit of the Atari commercial with Pete Rose. Nothing too horrid so far.

He starts with Basketball, shows a bit of it, and fails a half-court shot.
He moves onto Hangman. He manages to get two A’s leading to the puzzle looking like this “A_A_”. He tries “Adam” but fails, then he tries “Atam” (that’s not a word Bores!), then he tries “Ajax”, and then just keeps guessing random letters until he loses and learns it’s “Away”. For some reason this shocks him (it’s not a rare word Chris, I’m sure you hear it all the time from Toys R Us telling you they don’t have new Skylanders in stock) and he calls the game a “piece of crap”
He also points out that there’s something coming out of the Hangman’s crotch and “blah blah kids game”. Pretty sure that’s meant to be a building in the background. That’s my guess. Atari didn’t put dicks in their games (that was Mystique).
EDIT: Turns out that's supposed to be a tail, as the "Man" is really a monkey. That's kind of clever. Thanks to Harrod for pointing this out.

1:15 - 1:57: He brings up Breakout, plays a bit, loses.
Then he moves onto Night Driver, mentions that it has a “first-person view” (really early first-person), remarks that it’s like “driving his own car” and of course he sucks at the game. With terrible over-the-top screaming and montage of him crashing that goes a bit long.
He gives up, then the car from the game hits him. NOT! FUNNY!

1:58 - 2:45: Onto 1979, Atari released more sports games. Leading to a reaaaaallly dumb bit.
He mentions Football, and gets hit with a football. He mentions Baseball and gets hit with a baseball. He mentions bowling, and a bowling ball tries to hit him, but he dodges it, taunts the game, and gets hit with a bowling pin. Ugggggh.
Really? You really thought it was a good idea to recreate “Real Real Gaming”? One of the lowest rated videos on your channel because it was a dumb predictable joke (and made you look like an idiot when you responded to “Welcome to the show” with “Welcome”)
Also, two of those games came out in 1978. Only Bowling actually came out in 1979.

More stupid bits. He looks at Human Cannonball, where he inserts himself into the game and gets fired out of a cannon. So are you going to explain how any of these games work or play?
Then he looks at Sky Diver and inserts himself into the game. Then he looks at Canyon Bomber and does the exact same fucking thing. WHAT IS THE JOKE CHRIS?!

2:46 - 3:15:  Onto Superman! Which he claims is the first video game based on an established franchise. Well, Death Race the arcade game is based on the movie Death Race 2000, and while that didn’t become a franchise until later, I still think it counts.
You fly around, you pick up enemies, and you can… “check out the sexy Lois Lane” *looks at her sprite* Her?
This leads to one of the dumbest bits I think I’ve ever seen him do. He dresses up in what’s possibly the laziest Superman costume possible. He didn’t even get a Superman t-shirt or tape the logo on. It’s just a blank blue shirt. And I’m pretty sure his cape is a blanket. You use blanket capes when you’re eight! Not thirty-something!
Then he uses his “X-Ray Vision” and I swear the effect he uses came straight out of MS Paint. He uses it on the Lois sprite and her green dress “disappears” as Bores essentially colored the entire sprite the same brown color as her skin. Then Bores curses the pixel limitations.
…. I’m done. I am so fucking done. I am more done than done! I am a well done steak! *walks away*

*returns with a medium-rare steak* Just two more minutes.
Also, what is it with Bores and doing the laziest Superman possible? This reminded me of the very first Chris & Scottie video (the really old one that looked even worse than usual) where Scottie was Clark Kent and he turned into Superman by taking off his fake glasses and putting on his beanie. He didn’t even have a Superman shirt or anything. How is this so difficult Bores? You can find Superman shirts everywhere.

3:16 - 4:48: He mentions that Atari ported more games from their Arcade “li-bury” like Circus, Steeple Chase (thankfully he doesn’t do a stupid minute-long bit where he pretends to be a bunch of horses) and Outlaw, leading to a bit where he tries to shoot the other guy, hits the cactus instead, and loses. How can you fail so hard? Also, more of that annoying fake “Game Over” text. Stop that Chris, we can tell that’s not from the game!

He then brings up how Atari licensed other games to bring to the system, noting Space Invaders as one of the big titles.
EDIT: Something is wrong with the Space Invaders footage. It's too colorful, the Atari 2600 version only had one color pallette at a time. Here in the AVGN's Atari 5200 video, you can see him playing Space Invaders on the 2600. Look at how there's only one color.
Here it looks like Bores is playing the Arcade version, which does have a color version contrary to what he says in the comments about Space Invaders only being in black & white. http://imgur.com/PPck7v8
Why would Bores lie again? Why does he keep lying? If this is meant to be educational, why does he keep getting things wrong?
Thanks to Hunter the Hunter for the image.

Then he mentions how Nolan Bushnell wanted to make a new console, but the higher-ups didn’t, he got fired, and went on to create Chuck E. Cheese. I love how he never mentions specific dates for any of this. The video mentions 1980, but Bushnell’s termination happened in 1978. Wouldn’t it make more sense to mention this first then move onto 1979 and 1980 games? Am I just crazy?

The video ends announcing the next part will be about the Intellivision.

Despite its short length, this is probably one of the worst parts, mostly for how utterly terrible the sketch bits were. This might be some of his laziest comedy yet, it’s like he has no idea how to be funny. He’s like an alien trying to understand the HU-MAN culture.
Plus the history is all over the place. As I said in the last point, he brings up Bushnell’s firing last like it took place in 1980, when it didn’t. He doesn’t seem to understand how to structure this, he should be going in a linear order. Start with 1978, then 79, then 80.
Maybe Chris originally planned for the video to be ONLY 1978 but didn’t have enough material and only filled out the middle without adjusting the ending. Who knows…

I’m not quite done. Couple of things I wanted to mention.

If you go to the Pursuit of the Paranormal site, you’ll see the title of Chris’ book. It’s called, and I wish I was kidding, “Ghost Hunting 2.0”. Seriously?
There’s an article that describes the book too.

“Chris Bores is a leading paranormal communicator.” Source: Chris Bores. Show me someone that said this that isn’t a family member or close friend.
He goes on about his psychology and “ancient texts” and all that bullshit that wouldn’t help anyone find ghosts.
He also has a list of questions he claims the book answers. My favorite asks “What do aliens have to do with the paranormal?” No Chris, no. Aliens actually have a possibility of existing (our universe is vast, they could be out there). Ghosts aren’t real.

The cover is pretty bad too. I can barely tell what it is. It looks like amateur photoshop, which given the average age of Chris’ audience, it probably is.

The other thing I wanted to mention involves the Outnerd the Nerd contest, yes the one Chris claims he entered and got “snubbed”
Thanks to Ben and his searching skills in the Wayback Machine, we now know the rules for the contest and can poke a few more holes in Chris’ story.
https://web.archive.org/web/20070908210958/http://www.gametrailers.com/usermoviecontest.php

The contest ran from August 20th to September 16th 2007. Chris only uploaded one video during that time, his TMNT “review”. That could possibly explain why it’s similar to the AVGN’s video… but it also shows that he was lying when he said all the videos he made in Summer 2007 were made for this contest. The MUSCLE “review” was released August 17th, so there was no way it was made for the contest, or any of his other ones.
It’s likely that Chris broke one of the contest rules. “ Movie submission must be an original, not previously published segment and cannot use any or all of anyone’s User Movie that has previously been posted on GameTrailers or any other website.” Since those videos were posted on YouTube beforehand, he was likely disqualified.
There’s also this rule “All entries must be uploaded via the GT User Movie Submission tool”. It’s likely Chris didn’t upload anything to GameTrailers, another reason he likely lost.

Something tells me his entire story about the Outnerd the Nerd contest was fabricated. Just one of the many lies he told in that video.
Once again, thank you Ben for finding the rules.

EDIT: My informant found some "interesting" comments I feel need to be addressed.
One user asks how long it takes to make an episode. Bores responds "too long". Bullshit, this video feels like it was rushed in a few days. If it takes a long time, surely you could have gone into more detail, surely you could gotten a Superman shirt.

One user bitches about how the fans love the History videos, but hate the Skylanders videos. Oh booo hooooooooo! He responds claiming that he has "a lot of crowds to please". What crowds? You barely get any views! Playing along, the most you have is two "crowds". Video games, and Skylanders. What are you talking about?
You said yourself in the announcement of the book video that your channel "isn't as big as it used to be". Then he contradicts himself as "Linda" by saying he's still immensely popular and the haters are just "jealous". I'm starting to think Chris might have dissociative identity disorder, it would explain the completely different attitude when he pretends to be his mom.

One user asked how many times he's going to use the "I regret nothing" line. He responds "As many times as it takes" So Bores knows he repeats the same tired jokes but he doesn't care. Good to know he's accepted being an unfunny hack.

This one pissed me off. One user claimed he learned so much (I don't believe it) and Bores responds "excellent, probably shows that I love teaching" ... NO! ABSOLUTELY NOT! You are not a teacher! You are not educational! You misconstrue facts, you get things wrong, you outright lie! The only people that believe you're actually educational are unwashed ignorant fools that don't know any better!

And what's worse, he contradicts himself again! One user pointed out that the man in Hangman is really a monkey. He responded "yep, but I had to do something with it". So he willingly admitted he lied! That is not how you teach! If you want to teach through comedy, you have to use the truth! Oh my god! How does he keep getting away with this? Why is nobody calling him out? Why do I feel like I'm the only one calling him out? Where is everyone? What the hell is going on?!

*sighs* Sorry, I'm just stunned at the idiocy displayed.

  1. So let me get this straight, Chris's terrible videos never even had a chance of winning "Outnerd the Nerd" in the first place because he couldn't even follow the simple rules for entry? I think he may be one of the dumbest human beings in existence.

  2. *Looks at the comments on the new HVG video*

How? No really, how? How can Chris's fans actually find this series educational, entertaining or even good at all? All it is is him using video games to make short, unfunny puns and is never even focused on history, as Chris thinks he needs to be funny in order for his video to be good. News flash, Chris: DOCUMENTARIES ARE MEANT TO EDUCATE THE VIEWER ON A PARTICULAR SUBJECT, NOT TO TELL JOKES. The same goes with your reviews too, as they are meant to describe your thoughts on a piece of media rather than tell terrible jokes that anyone can make. And when his fans are presented with reasons as to why his work does not qualify as reviewing or documenting, they just say "who cares? He's still funny." Logic is just dead on this channel.

Why do these kids even care about seeing obscure video games that were over a decade (or even 2) before their time. I don't think even half of us on this blog care much to learn about each and every single games Bores covers in this series. All of this general history about the people like Bushnell and Baer and about the consoles is interesting though, but he just delivers that info so poorly and brushes it off to the side so he can mug to the camera so people will think he's funny. And all of this general info that I mentioned can be summed up in one single video. Whatever, I'm done ranting.

  3. So minus the skits Chris basically waited 4 months to do a video listing some games released in the span of 3 three years....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................wow is that lazy. This easily the worst History of Video Games because he did nothing worthy, say what you well about the other parts but at least he gave facts, sure most were false but still. The only facts he gave could've been covered at the end of the last time he covered Atari, which I think was last November.

  5. Great post BatDan, this has been one of the most entertaining blogs yet (imo). I love it that someone found an archive of the outnerd the nerd contest rules. I'm sure there is more evidence that Chris is a liar about that whole ordeal somewhere in cyberspace. As far as the episode of HOV, pretty typical work of Bores, but what really shocked me was the name of the book and some of the details about it including: "What keeps spirits from being captured on film?" Maybe it's your amateur filming skills Bores that keeps spirits from showing up on film or maybe it's because you're the most loathed person on YouTube.

  6. Yeesh. That hurt my brain just thinking about it. I watched just to see what you meant and I wish that I hadn't.

And I gotta be honest, I'm on a small budget and I could come up with better "special" effects with that! AND a better costume! (Got a Superman shirt. I'll cut some fabric off of a red curtain from the thrift store and attach it to the shirt. Not perfect, but I'd say it gets the job done and makes me dead sexy)

And a GHOST HUNTING book? There's better market for a Monster Girl novella than for something as controversial and, frankly, boring subject matter as ghost hunting. And I don't refer to ghost hunting as portraying the people who are interested as paranoid, superstitious people. Rather, as people who believe in ghosts. And those people who believe in ghosts don't necessarily watch ghost hunting. Asking if you believe in ghosts is another matter entirely--I might as well ask if you believe in reincarnation--but ghost HUNTING? In the same vein as psychics and fortune tellers, if you ask me.

I wondered whether he'd do an awful Superman sketch for that era of Atari, but i deliberately said nothing on the off chance it would alter his plans.

Second random references and unfunny jokes is not educational. Third what is Bores's thought process where he teaches his audience about video games where he thinks the SNES came out before the Genesis? The whole video was further proof that he is a lazy asshole and he is not going to reach the NES for another 3-5 years if he's even still around for that long. I bet we'll all be old men when he reaches the Wii U.

  15. Just to chime in a bit... During the bits where Bores is "playing" Breakout and Night Driver, he's using the standard Atari joystick... which is the wrong controller. Both games are played using the paddle controller. It even says so on the front labels.

  16. Once again, this part is loads of missed opportunities to talk about the origins of well known classic games like Breakout. If he can go into detail about Spacewar, why doesn't he do the same with other games like Space Invaders and Breakout? Does he not known that these games are the main reasons why people like Shigeru Miyamoto and Keiji Inafune entered the video game industry inthe first place?!

It really shows that his main priority with this series isn't talking about the origins and history of video gaming at all but just showing off pointless shit.

  17. Considering the errors in the description I am pasting below, getting through this book will be very tedious. Bores is not a very good writer. One would think that after the poor performance of his movie that Chris would be smart enough not to double down on host hunting media. 2016 will be amusing as he resorts to even more cash grabs that are poorly disguised as "reviews".

Bad writing here: "Here it is, it is almost here! I’ve been working on a book that will revolutionize the entire ghost hunting field forever. Ghost Hunting 2.0 will lay the foundation to make that happen. I have just sent everything in and it’s a pretty decent sized book. Here is the description of what you can expect to read about:

Chris Bores is a leading paranormal communicator. By using a new approach that combines together psychology, philosophy, ancient texts like the Tibetan Book of the Dead, quantum physics, and more, he is able to shed light on the paranormal in a way never that has never accomplished before.

By bringing these tools to the table, finding the next level of ghost hunting is finally achieved. Learn about his approach to the spirit world, how he classifies spirits, and stories of him interacting with each type."

    3. "Here it is, it is almost here!"

Contradicting statements. It's either here or it isn't.

"I’ve been working on a book that will revolutionize the entire ghost hunting field forever. Ghost Hunting 2.0 will lay the foundation to make that happen."

Again, contradicting statements. The book, "Ghost Hunting 2.0". Does it revolutionize the field forever, or does it lay the foundation? It's one or the other. "Forever" isn't necessary, we could assume that the field will not be temporarily revolutionized.

"I have just sent everything in and it’s a pretty decent sized book."

Again contradicting the "Here it is" statement from earlier. Sending the manuscript is a completely different thought that the size of the book, just they're mentioned together. Also, what qualifies as a "decent sized" book?

"Here is the description of what you can expect to read about:"

It's a description of the book, not a description of the reader's expectations. This is poorly structured all-around.

"Chris Bores is a leading paranormal communicator."

By what/who's standards? Any credentials? There's a sudden switch from writing in the first person to writing in the third person. He probably copy-pasted his synopsis from the back. If so, that means the perspective switch isn't actually an error. If this is from the synopsis, that makes the following errors much less forgivable as it's expected to appear on the final published product, not his personal blog.

'By using a new approach that combines together…"

      Just "combines". Not "combines together".

"psychology, philosophy, ancient texts like the Tibetan Book of the Dead, quantum physics, and more,"

Examples included in the list is poorly structured, "the Tibetan Book of the Dead" should be mentioned outside the list, or moved to the end, otherwise it seems as if "quantum physics" is one of the "ancient texts". Also, I doubt he knows what most of these are, much less how to research and apply them.

"he is able to shed light on the paranormal in a way never that has never accomplished before."

Does he mean "has never been accomplished before"? Watch out for those missing words. Also, didn't the "ancient texts" shed light before this book?

"By bringing these tools to the table, finding the next level of ghost hunting is finally achieved."

Poor grammar. Actually mentioning Chris in this sentence would specify that he's the one bringing these tools to the table. Alternatively, changing "achieved" to "achievable" would remove the verb and replace it with an adjective, eliminating the need for a target for that verb.

"Learn about his approach to the spirit world, how he classifies spirits, and stories of him interacting with each type."

Are we going to learn about stories of him interacting with each type of spirit? If the verb "learn" isn't targeting the noun "stories", then it should be in a separate sentence, or a new targeting verb should be included.

      F - -

      Held back.

      Repeating the third grade.

Every sentence has errors, this give very low expectations for the readability of the final product.

    4. Here's an proofread and rewritten version. Chris, feel free to use any or all parts of this rewrite, no credit required. A second proofreader might help as well, I don't claim to be a professional writer.

I've been working on a book, "Ghost Hunting 2.0" that I expect will revolutionize the field of ghost hunting. I've just sent the final draft of my manuscript to the publisher.

      Here is the synopsis:

By combining research from several fields (including psychology, philosophy, and quantum physics), and ancient texts (such as the Tibetan "Book of the Dead"), author Chris Bores is able to shed new light on the paranormal.
Learn about Chris Bores's unique approach to the spirit world, and his methods of classifying the sprits he's encountered and communicated with. Hear about his first-hand experiences interacting with each of his classified types of spirits.

  22. So I notice he keeps mentioning the Tibetan Book of the Dead when talking about his ghost-hunting endeavors. Out of curiosity, I decided to look up some information about this book. My findings have shown that this book is a TERRIBLE source for Ghost Hunting.

First off, the original text, the Bardo Thodol, is mostly an ancient self-help guide on how you should progress towards your next reincarnation during your own post-mortum state of conciousness. It also teaches meditation techniques for guiding you through other living states of consciousness. It does briefly talk about rituals for identifying states of death, but not in a context that benefits ghost-hunting. The book is also a religious text for a specific brand of Buddhism.

With that in mind, the Tibetan Book of the Dead is a very inaccurate translation of the Bardo Thodol from the 1920s that is littered with random Hindu terminology. It was written by a Theosophist who had no understanding of Buddhism or Tibetan culture whatsoever. The biggest thing that this book is famous for is inspiring The Psychadelic Experience, a guide for personal enlightenment through LSD trips.

The point is, Chris's biggest reference material for ghost hunting is a bad American translation of a Buddhist self-help book that is only tangentially related to the field of ghost-hunting in the first place. That'd be like if I used a Spanish translation of Dianetics as a primary source material for UFO research

    1. No, this book is going to transform the field of Ghost Hunting. The field will basically be unrecognizable after the revelations in this book. I mean, it's going to tell the world whether spirits can float. It may still be called "Ghost Hunting," but the field of study will be kicked to the next (i.e. second) level on publication day, hence the title.

    4. Serious question here,
Why do you like Doug's videos?
I tried watching them a few times both his old and "new age" videos and he just comes off as unfunny to me. Basically, all he does is sit and scream shit at movie clips or do lame sketches with poor comedic timing without really getting much into the actual reviewing aspect of the whole thing.
I need to say that I don't hate his work, I simply don't care about it, it's just that I can't comprehend why people like him.

      Delete
    5. Even if you don't find any of his jokes funny, you have to admit that he puts a lot of work into making a video with so much content every week, and you can really tell that he has a passion for TV shows and movies when he's talking about the ones he likes.

      Delete
    6. Oh, I do know he puts work on his videos, that's not the issue here. I simply want to know why people here likes his stuff so much, because like I said I simply can't find his sthik entertaining and I am curious.

    7. I guess because it's different. All the people on Channel Awesome (content creators like Linkara, not the viewers) say that NC's reviews are more comedy/humor based while everyone else's are more analysis-based. Doug's reviews aren't rich in analysis, but they have just enough to mix in with the comedy. Unlike Bores, he can actually have balance between comedy and analysis/information.

    8. I see. Thank you for your reply, I guess you do have a point.
I'm afraid I can't comment on the other contributors of Channel Awesome since I don't watch their videos (well, I saw a few from Angry Joe, but they left me with a very poor impression) so I don't think it would be correct to say anything else about Doug's site because I'm not very familiar with it.

    11. I really like what I have seen of this guy so far (Third Party Controller): http://channelawesome.com/thirdpartycontroller-how-the-80s-changed-gaming/

One of the problems I have with Doug Walker's: channelawesome.com is that there is so much content on there it's hard to keep up and learn about all the people posting content on there. I do like it better than his old thatguywiththeglasses.com site. That was even more cluttered and trying to find them on Blip was a hassle. I like the way James Rolfe has his website organized the best. Regardless of how much content he puts on there it is always easy to find things and you always get sense of direction and control with his site with his blog being on the front page and all the content being accessible from the top with the drop down menus. That is something that Doug Walker is lacking with his Channel Awesome site. Don't get me wrong he's got drop down menus, but his lack a sense of focus. I think a central blog like on James' site posting news and updates would help. But Doug has a lot more people posting content on his website which makes it harder to organize. James just has himself & Mike mostly posting content so it is easier to keep track of the content on cinemassacre.com compared to channelawseome.com. I have no idea how many people are on Channel Awesome posting content. If somebody would like to help explain Channel Awesome to me I would appreciate it.

As far as you "Guru Larry," if you can link me people you think are better than Doug Walker & James Rolfe I would like to see them. But for now Doug & James Rolfe are two of my favorites. But I would agree there are a lot of good video bloggers on the internet. Just imagine how many more there will be in 10 years? Look at how much video content has changed on the internet in just the last 10 years.

    6. Except that's not even true. The entire movement was started because a game developer broke up with her boyfriend, so he spread lies about her and her profession out of spite. 10. Saying a sucky game sucks isn't sexist just because the developer has a vagina.

When she, or her supporters, ignore legitimate criticism and claim all of her critics are sexist, it's no different than Bores and his fans ignoring legitimate criticism and calling us all haters/trolls/AVGN fanboys.

      Delete
    11. Except they're not just saying that her game sucks. If they were, this wouldn't be an issue. The problem is that they are claiming that the only reason her game did well in the first place was because she offered sexual favors to every journalist who reviewed it. The only reason anybody is even considering that idea is because "there's no way a game that I don't like that's made by a woman could be praised by its own merits, she must be fucking the critics." That is sexism.

      Delete
    12. I'm speaking for myself. When I said her game sucked I was accused of being sexist by dozens of her supporters in a matter of minutes.

"She must be fucking he critics." doesn't come nearly as often as "she and her supporters cry 'sexism' every time someone gives her criticism", which is actually true.

So many people support her game and attack anyone who dislikes it, assuming they hate the game because of cooties or some shit. I bet nine out of ten of them (the supporters, not the critics) don't know the game's name, much less played it to see if it's as shitty as those meanie-head boys say it is.

I believe the game, like all games (regardless of the sex of the developer) should be judged by it's own merits. Zoe's supporters claim that's what they want, but what they really want is for the game itself to be ignored and for it to be praised entirely because she's female.

By the way, have you played the game?

      Delete
    13. I have played Depression Quest. It's a visual novel, so admittedly there isn't much to get out of it gameplay-wise. However, its narrative is expertly done and I feel it is a very good and accurate portrayal of what someone suffering clinical depression would go through. It is a great tool for people with depression to understand that they aren't alone in the struggle, as well as helping people who don't have it understand what they go through. That said, it is a VERY non-traditional game, and it's not for everyone. I can easily understand why certain people wouldn't enjoy it. Even I found it to be tedious at times, but that's part of what the game was trying to accomplish. It isn't trying to be a fun experience, it's trying to simulate what someone suffering from a serious disease is going through. All-in-all it's a pretty subjective experience.

And as for people crying sexism, can you can fucking blame them? For the longest time, the majority of the people criticizing it did it solely because of the "Quinnspiracy", so clearly criticism of that game is a touchy subject. Feminism is a very touchy subject for a lot of people, and for very good reason since everybody overreacts to everything related to and against it. If it wasn't for the bullshit her ex-boyfriend started, I doubt people would have even noticed that the game was made by a woman. They would've just called it overrated, and left it in a forgotten, obscure chunk of game history.

When you criticized the game, did you just say "It sucks," or did you write your actual reasons for it? The people who accused you of sexism were likely extremist trolls anyway, which make up roughly 80% of the entire internet.

First, Eron wasn't lying. If he was, there wouldn't have been a need for Zoe to go have an illegal gag order taken out on him. For any interested, here's a link to his post, if you haven't seen it yet.

      https://thezoepost.wordpress.com/

As for saying that GamerGate isn't about ethics in games journalism.

      deepfreeze.it

Also, the newer updated ethics policies of many of the sites these people have written for, proves otherwise.

As for Zoe Quinn's game, it does suck. It sucks not just because it's not really a game period, but it doesn't even get depression right. As someone who suffers from depression, this was more a slap in the face than something that's going to help people understand what I'm going through. Depression hurts, which is something that was completely missed with this.

Maybe, you should actually come back with actual facts. Then again, you try legitimizing people calling people sexist because they saw right through this "game" that Zoe Quinn made.

You also came here to defend a movement that is currently defending a pedophile to keep their narrative going, and is now giving other pedophiles a safe space to where they can come out. Let that sink in for a moment.

    16. Did you seriously just call me an SJW just because I think gamergate is bullshit? I mean, I'd think the fact that I am a "White cis-hetero man" who thinks Anita Sarkeesian needs to calm the fuck down disqualifies me from that sort of thing, but whatever. You know what the difference between you and me is? I'm not offended by the fact that some people don't like this game, you're extremely offended by the fact that some people DO like the game. Also, Visual Novels aren't really games? Wow, Japan and Steam are going to be so disappointed by that. By the way, I have depression too, and I felt the game covered several aspects of it very accurately. But hey, depression is a subjective illness that everyone who has it experiences differently, so what the fuck do I know? Finally, I already linked information detailing why gamergate is mysogonistic at its core. But you want more facts? Fine.

Fact: This entire movement started because some guy decided to slut-shame his ex-girlfriend on every forum site that he could think of.

Fact: The claims that Zoe Quinn slept with critics to boost review scores for a game that was distributed for free has been proven false.

Fact: I do not condone the actions of pedophiles.

Fact: One pedophile is not indicative of an entire group. But since some people seem to think it is...

Fact: You came here to defend a movement that's based in an online community that literally believes that rape and pedophilia are a joke.

Fact: Zoe Quinn had to flee her home because gamergate supporters sent her death and rape threats after exposing her home address.

Fact: Anita Sarkeesian had to cancel a college appearance and flee from her home because gamergate supporters sent her death and rape threats after exposing her home address.

Fact: Felicia Day made a single blog post expressing concern about how female gamers feel about gamergate. In response, gamergate supporters sent her death and rape threats after exposing her home address.

Fact: Former NFL player Chris Kluwe posted a scathingly brutal criticism of gamergate. In response, gamergate supporters shrugged it off and left him alone, because apparently having a penis means you're allowed to have an opinion.

But please, do go on about how gamergate isn't sexist in any way and is actually about "ethics".

Maybe they just say that about people who don't like ALL of Chris's videos, because it is they who worship the true asshole who doesn't give two shits about them. 7. By the way, all signs are in place that this new book is indeed self published. There is no mention of being able to buy the book at Barnes & Noble, Walmart or anywhere else that sells books (though I am sure he will peddle some copies at the several ghost tours and hunts he scheduled for next month.) There isn't even a mention of a Kindle version on Amazon and it is very, very easy to get a book on Kindle. There is no link to a publisher website either.

In fact, the shopping cart you use to buy the book is simply named "Christopher", which is the same Paypal shopping cart used by theirategamer.com.. He mentioned he is willing to sign copies which means he will have a supply of books instead of stocking book stores and doing a tour.

To be clear- there is nothing wrong with self publishing but with the glut of self published books out there and lackluster marketing Chris has guaranteed that the audience for this book will be very small. If he is smart he will get a Kindle version up and the book on Kindle Unlimited.

That said, it is obvious the book will be of very poor quality. Note that he had to get a copy of it in his hands before he realized he needed to set margins. That is one of the things a writer sets up very early in the process.

You want to know how shit it is? Read his posts promoting it. That's how shit it is.

Would you pay money to a game developer to play a game just to see how shitty it is, when the free demo crashes on launch? Would you pay money to a filmmaker to see how shitty their movie is when you can't stand to sit through the trailer?

It's your money, do what you want, but I'd implore you to spend it on things that might not be shit. $14 for a book that you know is shit by someone who's famous for being talentless and unoriginal should actually go to someone who has talent and deserves success.

Why not find a good KickStarter and send the money that way, or find a good charity?

    1. If Chris would have listened to this Blog he would have a lot more subscribers & views than he does now. If he would have buckled down and kept up with the History of Video Games series from the beginning he would be doing so much better now.

      Delete
    2. Here's another thing! Bores refuses to evolve with the time and still thinks game reviews and ghost hunting shows are just as popular in 2015 as they were in 2007. Since he doesn't evolve with the times he does not get any new viewers. AVGN has evolved with the times and does more James and Mike videos (even if you don't like those videos you have to admit the insert to fucking box was clever). Overall this blog can help him more than harm him.

      Delete
    3. The only way that Chris has changed is he has become more Skylanders focused/action figure orientated and it has created little or no new viewers, and probably costed him far more. '80s nostalgia might be waning soon as well. I have been talking to a lot of people about '80s nostalgia and it sounds like a lot of people are getting sick of it. I might be wrong though. I love anything '80s nostalgia and early '90s nostalgia, but it may start to be running its course.

    4. I'll say this: at some point he learned something about production value, and his reviews don't look like something a high school student would be ashamed of. Also his angry face doesn't look like he severely needs to take a dump. My biggest peeve is when he just button mashes his NES controller and shakes it willy nilly all the time. He looks like a dumbass when he does that.

      Delete
    5. That's part of the wastefulness evident in his career; he's shown proficiency on the technical end, and could probably have a nice busy career behind the camera if his ego wasn't in the way. He wants to be a star badly enough to lie and steal (and waste time babbling about topics where he's not an expert) as a means of getting there. And his social skills are perhaps too retarded to allow him to network and meet other videographers as a path to a sensible career. It's hard to think of a likely path to redemption for him; Notwithstanding people's predictions, this blog may have reasons to exist for a very long time.

      >>My name is Chris Bores, I am an up and comer in the field of ghost hunting. I have worked as a ghost hunting tour guide for a while now and my new approach to the paranormal has been highlighted on local television, the reality show Hardcore pawn (within the next month or so), and I have lined up a publisher for an upcoming book. I have been able to classify spirits, communicate with them, and can get some great interactions with them to occur on camera that have never been seen before.
We use psychology, philosophy, and more to get our results. This is the next step in ghost hunting. No one else has been able to take this field to the next level like we can. Everyone else keeps doing the same thing while we have been getting things to continuously happen that people have never seen before. All the other shows are child’s play compared to this. 44. Sooo... This was a little weird. I'm preparing dinner with my girlfriend as she's watching Chinese television. It's a singing competition show.
As the host is talking to the crowd before the singers come out to the stage, it played the Irate Gamer theme in the background.

    ReplyDelete

    1. You expected originality from Bores?

      Delete
    2. It has already been proven that his theme song was stolen from another source.

    3. I think I know what your girlfriend is watching. It's called The Voice of China.

The show is very popular here in Singapore. As well as Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

      Delete
    4. I know he didn't write the song. I think it was from a royalty-free music site, and the song was intended to be used for sports videos.

Should be noted that royalty-free does not necessarily mean credit-free. Does Bores credit the songwriter on his videos?

Also, usually royalty-free content is only free for non-profit use.

@Sovereign - I think that is the show she was watching, or some spinoff of it. All the singers were wearing really weird costumes.

      Delete
    5. Shaolin Dave - Really weird costumes? Yeah, then I don't think it's Voice of China. Sorry.

      Perhaps it's China's Got Talent.

      Delete
    6. Voice of China is the one with the four judges in the rotating chairs facing away from the singers, right? This wasn't like that, but it looked like the same stage, which is why I thought maybe it was a spinoff.

On another note, I was trying to find pictures on the weird costumes and accidentally found out that Hong Sheng, the god of war, looks a lot like Strong Bad.

      Delete
    7. The song Bores uses for his theme is called "Blind Pass", it's from a now out-of-print collection of royalty-free music called StackTraxx from the company Digital Juice.
Cinemassacre used them too, sometimes you'd hear similar music in their videos and IG's videos.

Basically, Bores was so lazy that he used a piece of royalty-free music as his theme song.

      Delete
    8. If Bores doesn't know how to create music or know anyone who's able/willing to do it as well, I don't see any problem with using other music.
Using it without giving credit is where the problem lies.

      Delete
    9. On that note, does Cinemassacre give proper credit?

      Delete
  45. I'm looking forward to Monster Madness. Does anybody know what the theme might be this year? I'm hoping it is more '80s and early '90s Science fiction horror based movies. I don't know if there are many of movies like that, but Mike Matei once said if he could do anything he wanted on cinemasscre.com he wanted to do a Sci-Fiathon.

  49. So, this is super off-topic, but has anyone played Undertale? It's an RPG that was just released two weeks ago, and it is AMAZING. It's been getting 10/10s from most major reviewers, and even beat MGSV as the best PC game on Metacritic.

The game is only $10, an extra $10 if you want to buy the soundtrack with it, on both Steam and the game's official site. I'd go into more detail, but this is one of those games you ABSOLUTELY have to go into blind for it to work its magic. If anyone here likes RPGs, it is HIGHLY recommended.

Also, if you're still on the fence, there's a free demo on the game's official website to try, which runs the start of the game up to the end of the first major area.

On the other hand, how in the fuck does he expect anybody to realize what kind of sound quality comes from that speaker with a YouTube video? Any output from the speaker will be distorted by his microphone and post production. As if that were not stupid enough, he actually reviewed headphones. Other than looks and durability you won't get useful examples of audio quality with headphones out of a YouTube video.

I am skeptical of the quality of these products anyways but I haven't used them so I am in no position to judge.

    3. My observations after the first viewing:

      - Well, Chris, I see your priority is still trying way too hard to be funny with random sketches and then failing rather than actually delivering real information.

      - Fuck you Bores, just because Gilmore Girls is more aimed for females, that doesn't mean that it's bad or that males can't enjoy it too. Besides, it has a higher rating on IMDb than Hell's Kitchen.

      - Wow, another joke about committing suicide to something because it's "girly." First off, this makes you look even more like a hypocrite for what you said about Justin Carmical. Second, way to make yourself look more and more like a sexist asshole. Third, just turn it off if you don't want to watch it. Fourth, GUNS DON'T HAVE CORDS ATTACHED TO THEM!

      - God his acting was terrible on the Celine Dion part

      - So, the headphones make your head explode if they're on too loud? What's that? They don't? THEN DON'T FUCKING PUT THAT SHIT IN YOUR "REVIEW" AND GIVE US SOME REAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE DAMN PRODUCT!

      - I find his choice of music playing when he talks about the headphones questionable.

      - What the hell was that "joke" with the plug? It's not funny, and says absolutely nothing about the product. Also, just take out one of those other plugs to put the product's plug in, you're not using your NES anyway in this video. Hell, you must have a power strip lying around in your house or something? This is not fucking rocket science.

      - For fuck's sake, it's Red XIII, not Red. If you really were a FF7 fan, you would know that. Also, the music playing is the Cosmos Canyon theme, not Red XIII's theme, they're technically different songs. Also, this is a remix of the song, not the original song that can be found in the game, which you failed to mention.

      - What the hell was that bit with the glass of water? There was no transition to it and it came right the fuck out of nowhere. And it's very obvious that you're shaking the table to make the glass of water fall off rather than the speakers doing that. You didn't even increase the volume of the music at that part. And again, since the product can't do this, DON'T MAKE IT LOOK LIKE IT FUCKING CAN, EVEN AS A JOKE!

Good God, this is probably the worst "tech review" he's made yet. Sorry if I did your job for you, BatDan, but it was just so bad.

  53. Some brief Chapter 1-5 excerpts, posted for critical discussion and review.

    "I interview ghosts." (opening line)

"It is interesting to watch others attend my lecture and try duplicating my results later on. They are often met with failure. Taking ghost hunting to the next level is not a skill that can be easily replicated. Dealing with the spirit world often requires a systematic approach with a certain level of finesse." vs. "So to all the critics out there, I offer you this, use the same tools, head out to the same haunted location, and ask the same questions I pose to the spirits. I guarantee you will get the same reactions that I have gotten." (contradiction on same page)

"It seems that everyone is still trying to collect more data to confirm that spirits exist, when we have successfully done that already."

"Many evenings we found ourselves surrounded by huge crowds of people that happened to overhear our conversation and stopped by to listen. Since we talked about subjects that were considered nontraditional, we were quite the attraction." (Chris & Alan "hanging out at the local college restaurant")

"I handed off my video camera to another team member who was refusing to take it." (Jennifer, erased from history)

"I love a good mystery and this one was calling out to me. It is something I am sure even Scooby Doo and the gang would also have trouble solving."

"I felt like Batman trying to solve one of the Riddler's enigmas."

"I began singing the alphabet song. I felt very stupid doing so in front of everyone. As I finished the song however, my stupidity paid off." (my favorite line so far)

"Another ghost hunting staple is the flashlight. When investigating at night, you are going to need this item to illuminate the room."

"In 2010, I had become the 55th most subscribed channel on all of YouTube. This title came with certain responsibilities."

"Everyone knows that capturing ghostly activity on film is next to impossible. Why? This is because of a theory that exists in quantum physics called the uncertainty principle. (Shows a formula here, which is not explained.) This principle states that the observer collapses the quantum state. What exactly does this mean? It means that any area being observed by a human is solidified into solid matter. Anything not being observed can exist in a state of unsolidified matter. Since no one is observing it, the area is not solid and can change at the quantum level." (Oh... my...)

"I have seen a few shadow people in my life."

"There is no other force in the world that remedies a dark spirit better than religion can."

"Forbidden knowledge is forbidden for a reason."

"The only reason the names Schrodinger and Heisenberg hold a lot of weight in the world of physics is because both men came up with theories that revolutionized the field of physics."

"Even Isaac Newton studied ancient texts that enlightened him on creating his laws of gravity. In this book, you will find that for the first time ever, ancient texts like the Tibetan Book of the Dead and Egyptian book of the Dead have been decoded through the eyes of a ghost hunter. Doing this helps us achieve the same kind of enlightenment that Newton did."

Also, as I said before, it reminds me of Larry Sellers' D-grade history report. "Use a dictionary, spelling, who is he?" The difference is that Larry is a 15-year-old written by two of my favorite screenwriters and Boring Man is a 30-something that can barely write about old video games; much less something he actually seems to care about, if I may damn him with faint praise on that last one.

And you will be essentially powerless to remove blatantly-untrue bad reviews of yourself. Amazingly, this is even WORSE than it sounds when you dig deeper.
