Chris did however post an 11 minute excerpt on his YouTube channel. *looks at dislikes* Ooooooh daaaaaaamn.
That title? "The JOKER Movie SUCKS!! Get This Away From Me! (GEEKTIME TNG)"
That's clickbait. See, Chris confessed on Facebook that episode 4 was recorded two weeks ago. The new Joker movie officially came out yesterday. Meaning this "critique" is based entirely off the trailers. Real bad move there.
I'll just note that I haven't seen Joker yet, kind of want to wait until the hype dies down. Just for the sake of disclosure.
Basically his issues are "It's not like the comics, there's no Batman, Marvel does it right". It's not meant to be any of that. It's meant to be a psychological thriller showing how one man can completely break and become a mass-murdering crime lord. It's a story you can even tell without involving the Joker, they're using the character because they can. Think of it like an Elseworlds story. An alternate take.
Tim also refers to the movie as "artsy fartsy" because it got a standing ovation at the Venice International Film Festival. Yeah I'm sure that's exactly what we'll get from the man that gave us the giraffe decapitation in The Hangover 3.
Though some comments agreed with him, some state he missed the mark big time. Of course, a lot of those were deleted, and that's from people that actually bothered to watch the whole thing. A lot of them gave up because of the TWO MINUTE INTRO. It involves playing that terrible theme song in its entirety, along with some extra introduction stuff. Keep in mind the video is only 10:52 long, so for two of those minutes to be taken up by an annoying intro, you're going to lose viewers. Also, any comment that called this out as clickbait got deleted. Smooth.
On top of that, Chris put in SIX AD BREAKS! For an 11 minute video! Why do you think people use Adblock Chris?! Because of shit like that!
Let's face it, GeekTime has not launched well. Most of his fans don't seem to like it. They want Irate Gamer. It also doesn't help that Chris won't put the podcast on YouTube. They don't want to leave YouTube.
Who knows if people will even listen? Especially when they spout such incredible ideas like "The BurgerTime chef should be in Smash Bros instead of Terry Bogard". Along with "Marvel Marvel Marvel Marvel. Also Star Wars".
So Chris. Going to give up on the terrible podcast idea now?

ReplyDeleteThis episode of GeekTime is akin to that Irate Gamer 3-in-1 review - the one where he talked about Tekken 6. Both show that Chris has no idea what he is talking about.
ReplyDeleteI just listened. It's not bad. It's more opinion than anything, and as stupid as it may seem it's still just opinion and not to be taken seriously. I think it's a step up from the stupid Pubba Steve videos where he feels the need to point out things like the UPC on a box of cereal and say it's super cool.

I'm surprised my comment saying "This video is an example why your channel has fallen downhill" is still up. He probably doesn't care knowing how my video and Ben Phillip's documentary overtake Chris' content when searching for his channel and I don't see Chris' video in the results when you search "Geek Time"

So today marks the series finale of MLP G4. What are your personal thoughts on the series in general since it began in 2010?
ReplyDeleteI outgrew it early in the fourth season, so I haven't been keeping up.
DeleteHonestly better than it probably had to be. They did a good job of creating characters and having them drive the humor and stories rather than have a bunch of blandly similar characters dealing with blandly similar situations every week. Thought it lost a bit of its charm after in the 2nd half of the show's run.
DeleteAnd it is weird for me to think this much about a show about candy colored ponies.
Saw it with my fellow brony group on that day. We all loved it and had a finale party where we made a toast to 9 years of the show's run. We're looking forward to Season 10: The comic book series, where I am assuming it takes place before "The Last Problem".
DeleteNot to mention, BronyCon also ended this year, breaking the attendance record to over 10,200. Sucks it ended but there are still other small brony convention out there.

ReplyDeleteI think the AVGN needs to hang it up at this point. James is going to turn 40 soon and he's married with kids. It's gonna be sad when he's 45 and still using the same language he used in his 20's.
ReplyDeleteI am not thrilled with modern AVGN but I think it is silly to say it is time to hang it up. The channel shows very strong growth - currently 3.13 million subscribers - and AVGN episodes still pull in healthy views. In less than a month the recent Jurassic Park episode cleared over a million views. There is clearly a market for these videos and literally no business reason to shut down the operation at this time.

DeleteThis one was not as bad as some of the more recent episodes like Life of Black Tiger but it still seems to be missing the humor and charm of earlier AVGN episodes. This episode had a nice looking set and it was impressive that James carried the whole video in a single long take - very unusual for YouTube skits. I still think James is a better director than an actor though.

I just thought of this but another likely reason why Irate Gamer went downhill is due to Chris's inability to evolve with the times. He believes the only game reviewers out there are AVGN and Armake21 but he could've tried to collaborate with more modern reviewers such as PeanutButterGamer, JonTron, Nathaniel Bandy, Nintendrew, Generation Gap Gaming, or Scott The Woz. Sure all of these people would've likely said no but Chris at least making an attempt could've revived IG.

ReplyDeletewhile still generally enjoy AVGN, it's apparent James himself doesn't give a shit and is just acting at this point. The jumping the shark moment is probably when it became noticable he was just mouthing what those disgusting Screenwave guys wrote. For example, Kingdom Hearts. Or even the most recent halloween episode where you can tell James is just reading a script.
DeleteI think AVGN wore out on me in around 2017. With the two years prior there was occasionally a funny episode (Hong Kong 97, and Seaman to name a few). I think now it's strictly Mike Matei and Screenwave's channel and I think James obviously doesn't enjoy AVGN anymore but can't throw in the towel because he still makes boatloads of money from it. I think it's gonna be sad when he's 45 and still using the same language he used in his 20's.

Nowadays it's just way too acceptable to be an angry gamer. Gaming has just gotten too popular that if you're not gaming you're the outcast/loser.
DeleteThis just came to me but I have a theory that maybe Chris has wanted to do Superman 64 on IG but couldn't because he was pissed he couldn't stick an N64 cart into a Game Genie. Also I would cut Chris slack if he used Game Genie every once in a while like AVGN does rather than for every game. Like Battletoads is the only game for the NES I've never beaten without using Game Genie.

DeleteWhoever Tim is a lot more acknowlegdable and a lot more passionate about the things they talk about. Which isn't to anyone else's surprise. The show is called Geektime yet Chris wants to declare out Tim as a geek with his nerd alert sound effects. This guy is absolutely hopeless. A show that should make all geeks feel like at home. True it's all endearing and in good fun but it feels like Tim should be running this show. Chris is a nerd no doubt but he's very insecure about this which makes him not a very good host. Also why the hell are they calling it something that Chris liked watching before? What if the previous owner of Geektime comes back to claim copywrite just because he can (I mean Chris would never make Geektime become worth anything but still). Then in one of their episodes, Chris whines about how movies are taking the titles of big franchises like Ghostbusters but not making it anything like the original then why they even use that title just be something else new. Kettle calling the pot black so to speak.
