Did the Impossible Happen?

Not much to 2020 yet. No GeekTime for starters (now watch as soon as this post goes up, a new episode appears)
That promised video about ghost hunting shows? Delayed or cancelled because, according to him, he got another opportunity to pitch a ghost hunting show of his own. Yeah, this proves that a lot of his anger and bitterness came from jealousy of not having a show.
At this point, I'm convinced that Puppet Steve is nothing more than a tactic to fund his ghost garbage. Even though a real show would have a producer...

Speaking of Puppet Steve
On January 13th, he uploaded a video about mini Street Fighter cabinets. During it he had a dumb segment involving Ryu and Ken action figures. However, the voice of Ken sounds a little familiar. A certain Philly accent.
One quick look at the description, and you realize... it's James Rolfe. Yeah, the Angry Video Game Nerd has appeared in a video produced by Chris Bores. What the hell?

Clearly, we don't have the full story.
I don't think this will lead to a full-blown crossover. Screenwave likely sees Chris as a total nobody now and won't bother to bring him in for a video.
My guess? Chris contacted James using his Puppet Steve name, and asked to record some lines as Ken from Street Fighter for a "popular kids channel". James, being a nice guy, recorded it without knowing it was Chris. He's too busy to look it up.
But until we get answers, all we can do is speculate.
What's weird is that Chris also credits "the Irate Gamer" in the description of the video. Even though Steve and IG are the same person. We're not dumb Chris.
Also, he doesn't credit him as James Rolfe, but as "AVGN". Really?

A shame the ghost rants got delayed. I had popcorn and everything to see him lose his shit over a couple dumb shows, and not in a funny way like Mike Stoklasa talking about Ghost Adventures.

  1. Funny, I was just going to say that the Street Fighter Pubba Steve video was worth a new entry.

I have to wonder what caused James' change of heart after Boring Man mocking him in the Story Arc finale and demonizing him in his Opening Up (a drum of bullshit) video. But like you said, it's more likely that James didn't know that Pubba Steve was Boring Man and was just trying to help out a fellow YouTuber.

  2. Minor geography quibble: James is from and in Philadelphia, two states from New England.

    1. You're right. I'm in the midwest so I assumed that everything in that upper part of the country was "New England". Turns out it's only six states. Fixed it.

    2. New England consists of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Just sayin'. :-)

Dan, I'm sure James' agent would have done the research and warned him about Chris if they really weren't on good terms. Also I think James is smarter than that, considering how he never engages with angry haters or politics on the Internet.

I don't really know what to make of this to be honest. Maybe Chris and James have somehow made some peace with each other but don't take my word for it. Without knowing for sure about anything, it's anybody's guess why James would help Chris.

  5. My best guess is that Chris contacted James with an alias that James wouldn't recognize and since James is a good person, he decided to do the voice. Either James didn't know Chris was Puppet Steve or completely forgot about the Irate Gamer.

  6. I think it is easier to believe that James is over the controversy from 12 years ago and the two have buried the hatchet.

    1. Well, Chris only made his Opening Up video 5 years ago. But I guess 5 years is long enough to move on. Honestly, it's not too difficult to believe that Chris made peace with considering he stopped caring about his angry gamer persona a long time ago. These days, he only seems to be "enemies" with the Ghost Hunters.

    2. I agree, it makes more sense than the more (for lack of better term) conspiratorial ideas being bandied about. Who knows though? I’m sure more info will surface.

  7. I finally got around to watching the Puppet Steve SFII video. That has to be some of the sorriest Street Fighter II gameplay I have ever seen. I'll give Chris half a pass because it must suck playing the game on those tiny controllers but... damn. Chris does not really understand the fundamentals of Street Fighter II.

Old news, I suppose, since this video went up on 12/23, but just watch the beginning of this and count how many times he says the word "Groceries."

    1. I get annoyed watching the videos. He has to point out every damn detail including very arbitrary things like copyright imprinted on the back of an action figure or the UPC label on the back of the box or the twist ties the figures are tied to in the package.

    2. Anything- absolutely anything- to push the video past ten minutes for whatever monetization reasons. "And, as you can see, there's that famous MacFarlane Toys UPC label, on the bottom of the card as usual! And here we've got those two narrow vertical lines in the far left, and then we've got a, eh, kind of a white gap after that, and then a medium-thickness line and another thin line! Then there's- WHOA! Look how thick THAT line is! Wa-ha, that's crazy! Then another medium line..."

  9. What's kinda funny is the line at 6:05. Those voices sound very familiar, it's like they're rivals sfrom a previous life or something.

  10. OT - What companies do you speculate will go out of business this year? My guess:

    1) Sears/Kmart
    2) GameStop

  12. Another FGTEEV video. Damn, Chris made Duddy into a complete shit. The comment section is also disabled, he knows that the kids are no longer fall for fake cameos.

    1. That video actually got COPPA'd. The way to tell is the "Save" button being grayed out and inaccessible.

    2. Now you can comment. Also yesterday it paused when you swiped it down and you couldnt play it while it Was in this state. There was also a notification because it's a Video for children. But now it's full with ads so chris Marked afterwards it as a Video Not intended for Kids.

    3. I didn't noticed the "save" button, kinda overlooked it, sorry about that. And yeah, the comment section is back.

    4. He starts the video with "Hey Kids," and then marked it as Not For Kids. I guess Chris is perfectly okay with a potential fine.

    5. Is this a moment of truth where he has to decide what Puppet Steve is just to have a chance of it surviving on YouTube?

      Delete
    6. Much as I'm not a fan of Puppet Steve, he could always move the series to either DailyMotion or Vimeo...

      Delete
  13. Wait....what?! Chris is making videos about toys that are clearly intended for kids, addresses his audience with, "hey kids!", has had comments from viewers who claim they are as young as 5 or 6 and he is labeling said videos as not intended for kids?!

Chris... you are playing with fire. The fines for violating these rules can be as high as $42,000 PER VIDEO. You have a family to support. You cannot afford these fines. Don't do this.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The 42K fines are probably only to scare corporations out of uploading hundreds of offending videos, and not something that will be levied against the common YouTuber. But Bores won't get unlimited second chances either. He needs a plan, or an all-new revenue stream. As he has a family to raise, I'd suggest finding work that's only on the technical end, but only he can decide.

I wonder if he's considered letting his kid or kids write scripts? Producing them on weekends could be a family project when his money-making work is done. Then he's making an honest living, getting the entertainment bug out of his system, spending quality time with the family, and teaching his offspring both a skill and a creative outlet. And maybe a series that's not drenched in formula and immediate mercenary concerns would build an audience.

    2. I wonder, is there a way to report the channels who obviously infringe this law?
Just saying because i couldn't find anything helpful somewhere.

  14. I've always wondered this but how would a Down The Rabbit Hole video on Irate Gamer play out?

  15. Watching the Puppet Steve Street Fighter II video now. I myself wonder how Boring Man was able to get James Rolfe to portray Ken... perhaps someone should ask either of them for answers.

    1. Mike Matei would probably be the best person to ask. Either James didn't know that Bor-ess was Pubba Steve or they've let bygones be bygones.

      Delete
    2. Not sure about Mike, but given James' level of fame now, I'd say the closest you'd get to contacting him is his agency.

As for Chris, I'm not sure if he even has one.

    3. Alex makes an attempt in the video, but is told "Well, you can forget about that, because this is the Puppet Steve show."

Yes! The Rise and Fall of Channel awesome is happening and I'm in the middle of writing the script. One thing I'd like from you guys is some suggestions of what particular things to include in the video and if you do I'll credit you in the end credits.

  23. It's now over four years since the last "History of Video Games" installment (Part 10, Intellivision). The final sentence of that video, and thus the last thing spoken in any HOVG installment, is "The Golden Age of Video Games was about to begin." How perfect is that?

  24. Just to let you guys know! I just got done with filming The Rise and Fall of Channel Awesome and I expect to take about 3-4 days to edit. I also expect it to be much longer than my other two Rise and Fall videos are. I try to keep these videos as neutural as possible so when it came to any drama the site and Doug has had, I don't go super in depth or take any sides. The video should be up at the end of the week.

    1. Honestly don't fucking care about Nostalgia Critic. Just as an example I don't just bash on Chris Bores/Irate Gamer, I hate Nostalgia Critic quite a bit and find him overacting and near the equal level of cringe as Irate Gamer. IC's cringe is just done in a different style.

      Delete
  25. Dead on GeekTime. Not very surprising. Bores always gives up on something that has no popularity. The problem is you Chris, anything you start does not get any fans at all, maybe a few haters and critics but you can't take the backlash of course so you have to run away.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I can't find his Geektime videos anymore. Someone needs to save and record everything Chris has done otherwise he deletes them from the face of earth. No doubt his Ghost Doctor series and current IG videos will disappear as well. I'm guessing he's going to put them into a DvD to try and shill and make it so this is the only way you can watch them again.
