Holy Crap a Skylanders Review + Ghost Hunting 2.0 Follow-Up

It’s been an eventful couple of weeks hasn’t it? Mostly around Bores releasing his book, the negative reception, and “Linda’s” damage control. I’ll get to that at the end.

But first, what did this week bring in videos?

SKYLANDERS! FUCKING SKYLANDERS FOR BOTH DAYS!
Actually, the second video might be worth checking out.

First video is another checklist, which seem to be the only thing on his channel that still gets views. The last checklist video he made now has over 133k, which is way more than the two preceding videos. His Donkey Kong review with a little under 60k, and the Lego Minecraft video with 27k (sounds like his first Minecraft video was a fluke).

The second video is a REVIEW of Skylanders SuperChargers. After skipping over Swap Force and Trap Team, Bores finally “reviews” a new Skylanders installment. From reading the title, “Skylanders Superchargers The IG Video Game Review, Missteps and more”, it looks like he might actually show some reason and not make this a biased gushfest. But I get the feeling the missteps will be minor, or things that are common in other games. We shall see.

The video is more of a vlog with edited bits in so… no timestamps.

Right into the video, no intro.
In fact, this seems to be a continuation of the last video as he opens saying “Alright, now that I’m done talking about the figures…”
He shows that the version he got is the PS3 version. Well I imagine he got the Wii U and 3DS versions too since I can see the DK and Bowser figures. But from the looks of it he’ll be “focusing” on the PS3 version. This tells me that he still doesn’t have a PS4, GotGame likely depriving him of one because he won’t make them videos.

He mentions that the figures no longer come with cards. To any Skylanders fans reading, did anyone care about the cards? They probably got rid of them because nobody cared about them.
All the footage is from his previously posted videos at Vicarious Visions, at least it’s not a camcorder pointed at the TV.

He said he didn’t like the vehicle segments. Sounds like Arkham Knight.
So will he explain?
He says he got into Skylanders because it reminded him of Gauntlet and Diablo (no pointless God of War comparison?) but “it was for kids”. Gauntlet was considered safe for kids too, it wasn’t bloody like Diablo. Just saying.
Also, “it’s for kids” feels like code for “It’s easy because I’m really a total scrub”
He says he didn’t like the added stuff like controlling robots or vehicles and all he wants to do is “smash through the level”. So you just want a super easy game with no variety or challenge? Shit, you really are a scrub. I’m pretty sure all the “extra stuff” was added so the sequels don’t get stale.

He keeps going on about wanting to go back to basics, how he wants “element doors” like the first game again. Saying that he loves how water Skylanders walk through water, and fire Skylanders walk through lava. I don’t know why, but I find this part insulting.
He wanted them to “expand on that”. How? There’s only 10 elements, there’s only so much you can do with that. This isn’t Pokemon where the Rock-Paper-Scissor mechanic comes into play.

He likes the story and characters, but won’t say why. Of course…
He’s also glad there’s no larger figures. I remember he didn’t like the Giants back in that review (for the dumb reason of “they don’t fit in my storage case”) but I guess he also complained about them during Swap Force and Trap Team. Again, I don’t watch 99% of his Skylanders content so he could have brought this up multiple times for all I know.

Blah blah blah blah I don’t care.
Barely a review, more complaining that things aren’t like they used to be, whatever this franchise is stupid.

Onto the ghosts!

Ghost Hunting 2.0 has been out for well over a week. Reception has been… justifiably negative.
As of this writing, there are four reviews on Amazon. Three negative 1-star reviews, and a PITY review. The latter is someone outright saying they didn’t even read the book (no joke) but still giving it a 5-star rating because he feels bad for Chris. Pity reviews aren’t going to change the fact the book is unreadable trash. If anything, outsiders will see the majority negative, see the only 5-star didn’t even read the book, and realize that this is not worth looking at.

For the record, the people that did review the book did not buy it, rather they used Kindle Unlimited, or borrowed the book through Kindle, negating any possible sales for Bores.

The first review, from Anthony Devon, called it “Hopelessly amateur and poorly written”. Shaolin Dave got in touch with Anthony and asked how he came across the book. Seems a friend recommended it to him as a joke, he had no prior knowledge of Bores before that. This man went in completely blind, and he still found the book terrible. That says a lot about Chris’ writing. For the record, Anthony has written a few books under different pen names, two of which have sold 54,000 and 124,000 copies each.

When the review was copy pasted to the GH2.0 video comments, “Linda” had this to say.

Thanks to Harrod for capturing this.
Note how she’s bragging that Bores sold… 18 copies. How is that worth bragging about? That is abysmal no matter how you slice it.

The second review from Constantino Rivas Rangel brings up something interesting. The book’s title is likely a reference to (or jab at) Grant Wilson’s book, “Ghost Hunting: True Stories of Unexplained Phenomena from The Atlantic Paranormal Society”. Kind of shows where Bores placed his ego.

The third review (technically the fourth but I’m not counting the pity review) came from reader Chico Edge. I applaud you Chico for managing to make your way through that egotistical wank.
Remember in the video he said that hopes a new branch of psychology is formed from his book? Yeah, I’m still laughing. Well, his ego has gotten so massive by the end, he outright claims he created a new branch of psychology. The delusion is fucking real!
He also brings up a humorous bit where Bores asks the readers if they want their spirits to leave their bodies through their sex organs. You know, if the peanut butter bait, singing the alphabet, the Scooby-Doo reference, and the comparison to Batman didn’t convince you this was a joke, then surely that line sealed the deal.

Basically, this book won’t convince skeptics, and it might crush the beliefs of potential ghost hunters.

I look forward to more negative reviews in the future (if any are made).

There is one more thing.

Thanks to reader You Tubed for this image. “Linda” has clearly lost her god damn mind (more so than usual).

Seems I’m on the same level as Christopher Harper-Mercer, the man responsible for the massacre at Umpqua Community College in Oregon last week. Yeah… screw you Chris.
First of all, I don’t like guns. I will never feel the urge to grab one and go on a killing spree. That is horrifying.
Second, going by the date You Tubed posted the screencap, this was three days after the shooting. Too soon.
Third, you’re using a tragedy to forward your agenda of trying to make me look like a complete monster. It’s rather sad and pathetic that you go so far as to compare me to a killer.

And Chris, if this really is your mom and not you pretending to be her, how about having a  talk with her. Her behavior is getting worse, she is beyond batshit insane now. Maybe tell her to stop listening to Alex Jones.

And to my readers, this will not go on the Year End list. I really wish you guys would stop saying “This should go on the list or that should go on the list”. I will decide what goes on the list. Of course this year I’ll have waaaay more options to choose from but that’s still two months away and who knows what will happen then?

Have a good weekend everyone.

  1. Chris/Linda will probably double down on this and stop at nothing to try and ruin your life. All because you criticized him. Nothing short of despicable.

  2. I'm not going to give you any suggestions for the year end list BatDan, but I will say this. Given Chris's output this year, the list should at least be a Top 20.

    1. If this were on a top 20, it'd be number 11-12. If BatDan did qualify the thing mentioned for the year end list, it'd be competing with promoting off nimoy's death for the number one spot. As I said that is if he qualified the Oregon thing for the list.

  5. LOL, I was the one that wrote the pity review. Actually I read a few pages of the preview and figured it was a good enough effort to get a pity review.

  6. Allegedly reviewing a book based solely on the first few pages? Wow! That'd be like playing an hour's worth of a ten hour game and making a five minute "review" based on that!

Sarcasm aside Chris recently reviewed a book when he was only halfway through it so, breaking news, he might be a hypocrite.

I'd have to invent a whole new branch of psychology to properly understand why he keeps making these horrible decisions.

  7. I think when Chris was born he got legally certified insane by Keith Moon because there is no way BatDan would go killing people or is even like the Oregon shooter. Maybe this proves that Chris/Lina is a pathetic asshole that only cares about making money. He does not give a shit about his fans and he shouldn't be comparing critics to a massacre especially on one of the biggest sites in the world where someone like You Tubed can easily screen cap the image and spread it around. All I can feel sorry for is to BatDan and You Tubed for being compared to the Oregon shooter and not to Bores for his shitty book selling a few copies (as we all predicted).

Come one, come all and see the spectacle of a lifetime! Only in these modern times could the C-list owner of a dwindling YouTube channel set out to write a book. Only through the miracle of self-publishing could a man with a command of the written word so poor that he would flunk a middle school English course actually request payment for the dubious pleasure of reading his magnum opus. You will see these horrifying sights and more and it will only cost you… nothing. Don’t waste your money on this dreck. If you must read it then do what I did and find it on Kindle Unlimited.

Several years ago the author was a source of- ahem- controversy. If you didn’t know that Chris Bores once had the 55th most subscribed channel on all of YouTube, don’t worry. He will mention it no fewer than three times in Ghost Hunting 2.0 (and what a drab title. Was Ghost Hunting for Dummies already trademarked?) With all of that said, I will leave the author’s misdeeds as a video game reviewer properly buried in the past and review the book on its own merits (or lack thereof.) If you don’t like long-winded rambles I will save you some time right now. It sucks. I’m the guy who sent copies of Michael Bay’s Transformers movies to people I hated and even I wouldn’t give this book to a fellow human being. I regret reading Ghost Hunting 2.0 and rarely do I feel this way.

The first problem with this book is the layout. Spacing between paragraphs is inconsistent- even between paragraphs on the same page. The wrong lines are indented. There are enough grammar errors to guarantee comas if you are playing a drinking game. Would you like to know the worrisome part? This broken mess is apparently the corrected version according to the author himself or so he said on YouTube. Even worse- the writer commented that he wants the work to appear this way. Self-published books rarely have extensive editing but in this case it is obvious the writer didn’t even have an adequate outline. I can’t even call the book’s layout bad because that would at least imply there was some forethought applied to the design. It is simply haphazard. The writer’s girlfriend has children and I am certain they could have done a better job of preparing this manuscript for publication.

    3. 2/2

A couple of years ago Chris Bores released a movie called Pursuit of the Paranormal. If you haven’t seen it that is alright- it appears not many people bothered with it. In that movie Chris claims to have engaged in a 90 minute conversation with the dead. Not content to let the story of his trip to the St. Augustine Lighthouse die (pardon the expression), the writer again strokes his ego by repeating it in this book with a strange and boring explanation of his spirit classification system crammed in the middle. It is all rather pointless as Bores tells us that spirits are prohibited from telling humans details about the afterlife and they will be punished if they do. Predictably, the author does not provide any support for that either other than his assurances.

To conclude this review, there are better uses for your money and more importantly, your time than this book. Even the smut section of the Kindle library is likely to be more entertaining and certainly more educational than Ghost Hunting 2.0.

Boy, did I come at the right time.

For a while, I wanted to start doing video reviews of various weird or obscure media. When I found out the Irate Gamer was publishing a book about ghosts, I thought that would be the perfect starting point for a possible series.

The review is here by the way. Just to warn you, it's a bit on the lengthy side.

    2. Watched through the video. Very nice job Lucas.
I'm stunned at all the contradictions, and the part where he outright tells the readers to "look up the info online". That is beyond poor form.

Interesting note about his "a hundred paranormal shows" hyperbole. He would use that same "number" when confronted with the fact he stole from the AVGN. Saying "there were hundreds of other guys doing these videos on YouTube". Of course he never mentioned any by name, and in his big "opening up" video from last year he only listed like 6 people. Who were the rest?

Another note, about his investigations into Mansfield Reformatory (I can't believe he explained what a prison is) and Longwood Manor. Those were subjects in his first major attempt at ghost hunting with the show "Haunted Investigators". You can watch them and other episodes (including the Haunted Hydro) on his YouTube channel. He neglected to mention that there was a third hunter with them. His (now ex-)girlfriend Jennifer Schippell.

    4. He actually did make a couple of references to Jennifer but he severely diminished her presence. The fact their relationship ended doesn't mean that she doesn't deserve recognition as part of the team.

      Delete
    5. Gotcha, thanks for the clarification.
It sounds like most of the book is about Bores stroking his own ego. Does he mention what Alan did at all? How he contributed to the team? Outside of "being a Buddhist"?

      Delete
    6. A remarkably thorough analysis, Lucas. The video length will probably work against you as I can't imagine many people will care enough about Chris Bores or his book to watch a 50 minute YouTube video but thanks for your effort.

The spirit classification was excruciatingly boring. I considered quitting the book twice during these chapters.

To expand on your thoughts about buying the book- I don't even think it is worth pirating. The bandwidth could be used for something much more entertaining and I firmly believe most readers will hate the time they wasted reading it.

      Delete
    7. @BatDan,

Actually, he does credit Alan more than Jennifer. Alan was typically written as walking around, talking to the "spirits", holding flashlights for the spirits to turn on and things like that. It was typically Chris who was presented as having strokes of genius about communicating with ghosts, using the K2 meter to measure how much space Eliza occupies, etc.

A point I left out of my review- his account of the lighthouse study and Eliza pity hinges almost entirely on Matt the tour guide. Even if you want to believe the ghost of a 15 year old girl resides there the entire incident depended on Matt's presence and not the techniques Chris usesl

    8. Thanks for the feedback everyone! I was kind of worried that the length and the informal setting would scare people off, but I'm glad you guys liked it.

I honestly don't even remember Jennifer being mentioned in the book, and searching her on Kindle doesn't give me any hits. It's pretty sad; you'd expect a non-fiction writer to look at things objectively, but then again GH2.0 is the furthest from non-fiction.

As for what Alan does, according to Bores he mostly asks basic questions and does a few things, like put a flashlight on a table and asking a ghost to turn it on. It's mostly Bores making the big discoveries and asking the hard hitting questions.

Didn't know the Mansfield and Longwood investigations were released as their own thing. I'll definitely take a look at the Haunted Investigators episodes. It'd probably give me a better idea of how these ghost hunters operate (And a couple laughs).

I've been throwing around the idea of making a shorter version, but the thing about reviewing a book is that there's a lot more content to get across and no way of visualizing that in an interesting way. At least with a movie or a video game you can have the footage playing in the background. I guess the video in its current state will have to suffice for the time being.

      Delete
    9. Here is one reference to Jennifer but you wouldn't know it if you haven't seen the Mansfield Reformatory video-

"I handed off my video camera to another team member who was refusing to take it. To this I replied, "I'm paying for the evening, take the camera." (Location 379 on the Kindle version ).

At locations 616 and 625 he mentions his "girlfriend" but not by name.

  11. By the way, something seeds odd about the ghost of Eliza affirming that Matt is her boyfriend. Did teen girls from the 1800s refer to boyfriends? I am by no means an expert on courtship protocols from that era but I would have thought a girl from back then would be more formal. I could be wrong on that though.

Also, off topic but since BatDan did mention Arkham Knight.,....I understand why people dislike the Batmobile segments because adding driving segments does take away most of the stealth elements. But personally, I actually like them.

Okay well aside one Riddler time trial that made me very frustrated and experiencing the same glitch THREE TIMES with the Batmobile during my playthrough, I still enjoy it. I find some of the riddles that requires assistance from the Batmobile to be creative and it does feel satisfying to take out enemies and tanks with the Batmobile's cannon and also running over them.

  28. Instead of contradicting the mindless cyber bullies that are still jealous of Chris's online success, nor mentioning that all the one star reviews have a common theme as if they are written by the same script. I'd rather tell about a fun read from an author that has more integrity and personality then his "haters" want you to know. I've had the pleasure and opportunity to ghost hunt with Chris at the collingwood arts center. The first time I saw Chris break out that peanut butter I was like " what the hell did I just pay for"! Then came the results. I was amazed at the conversations he was having with an unseen source. He had questions I would have never thought of asking and the answers kept coming. I was a skeptic and I was very impressed ( BTW: I was there because my Wife dragged me into going). Dont think its all mindless yes answers he was getting. Chris was applying his technique to get the answers that amazed the entire small group I was with that night.
I'm about a third of the way through this book and I really like it. Mainly because I know it's coming from someone who is honestly sharing his experience. Chris, I'm looking forward to "Ghost Hunting 3.0". Get writing!

  31. My word. I think I now have a new worst moment for this year. There's no way anything else will top this. It's one thing when Boring Man fails to stick to a schedule HE set for HIMSELF; but comparing a critic to the man behind what happened in Roseburg is totally uncalled for and actually a very weak argument in itself. I was just getting home when I heard the news (I live in Oregon myself); and the tragedy is also causing me to amend most of my plans for the rest of the year. See you all Tuesday, but I don't think anything Chris does the rest of the year will be worse than this.

    1. And what "Linda" said is what we on the Internet would probably refer to as SLANDER. Seriously, that's just messed up.

  32. @Batdan, I sent you some mail. As for IG's book, I wonder what other paranormal investigators think about it. Obviously, Chris has no respect for them and their methods (eventhough they do the exact same thing as he does) except for Chris claiming that he can swoon the blinking lights better, I mean ghosts.

  33. I think the main problem why Skylanders is being milked at this point is because there's TOO. MANY. CHARACTERS.

At least in Star Wars, each character, major and minor, does something memorable and in Pokemon and Transformers, every now and then, they would reintroduce an old character from the past which they felt they haven't been using for a long time.

Skylanders however, once a year is over, they would introduce even more characters in the next installment and now completely disregard the old characters. Think about it. Spyro was the main character of the first game but in the next installments, they never use him anymore. Hell, they didn't even reintroduce him in Superchargers. And the Giants, Swap Force characters and Trap Team characters? Once the year, they are all completely disregarded. You never see the Giants again in any Swap Force trailers and gameplay videos and you never see the Swap Force characters again in any Trap Team trailers and gameplay videos.

  34. Two more 5-star reviews showed up on the book.

    From Mr. S. T. Dodd:
"Great book that really gives a diverse take on the paranormal. Love bores's sense if humour too. Recommended!"

    And from Scott Mahoney:
"Instead of contradicting the mindless cyber bullies that are still jealous of Chris's online success, nor mentioning that all the one star reviews have a common theme as if they are written by the same script.
Get writing!"

When the hell was Chris ever successful?

"I'm looking forward to Ghost Hunting 3.0"

He knows this book is not a sequel or a continuing series right? God, he's an idiot.
