An Atari Artbook Because Nobody is Watching

Another week goes by where he doesn't make a video, leading to a two week wait. No excuse again, and "fatherhood" is still not an excuse because he posted 13(!) Puppet Steve videos in that time. Two were about cereal. I am not kidding, even when trying to hide his past, he still does stupid things from that time.

New video, and it's not the final part of Mario Game Genie. Those videos can NOT be hard to make, just put in the code and record the results.
Instead we get: Atari VCS Video Game Art Book - History of Cartridges, Flyers, Games 2600, 7800 Chris NEO
Ah jeez that is a messy title. Trying to stuff as many trending words as possible?

Video is a little under seven minutes.

"I know I like to spend a lot of time on the NES system" Redundant. Nintendo Entertainment System System? Should have done a second take Chris.
Says they're going to check out something cool for the Atari and holds up a 7800 controller. That's false advertising, he's not looking at a game.

Intro

Claims that the Atari was one of the first systems he ever "picked up and played" I don't believe you.
He shows the book. See the cover? Now look at the thumbnail Chris chose for the video. Why didn't Chris use the book's cover? Why did he go for the controversial E.T. game? Is it part of his weird clickbait strategy? "Nobody will care if I use the cover, but if I show one of the games I reviewed in the past and one that's notable" Please, it's not like anyone is watching this.

He comments that they had "the most amazing artists" do the artwork for the covers. While showing Atari 7800 games in grayscale, which do not do a good job of showing off the artwork. Dumbass Chris, could have gone with 2600 games but instead did something stupid. As usual. Not to mention his copy of Centipede has a huge rip in it. Not even a minute in...
"If you pick up any of these titles, you'll just be blasted with it" This is referring to the "cool art". Does Chris ever look over what he writes?

Blah blah blah blah...
Oh wow he brings up History of Video Games. Good thing that's dead. Why bring that up but refuse to mention Irate Gamer by name?

Oh... I see what this video is. He's done videos like this before. All he does is skim through a book and occasionally comment on something. I know he did that with an Assassin's Creed art book.
Yeah, this isn't worth covering. I'm sorry.

I think it's safe to say that "Chris Neo" has been a bust. The views have been abysmal, he barely gets comments about the videos on Facebook, the schedule has been inconsistent, even his websites are dead. As in they've been suspended.
Why did Chris even bring this back to begin with? Apparently people have been begging for it, but now that it's back, nobody is watching. Hell, it took over a month for his Thanos video to get over 10k views. Maybe people don't like this even more boring direction? Maybe people heard that Chris is a crazy conspiracy theorist and want nothing to do with that? Who knows.

Sorry for the weak post.

  1. That “NES System” thing is why I have a problem with people calling the Human Immunodeficiency Virus the “HIV Virus.” Wouldn’t that stand for “Human Immunodeficiency Virus Virus?”

  3. E.T isn't really the worst game ever made. The reason it's given that title is because of a 2003 or 2004 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly. This video from Teh2Dgamer should explain more. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tM4mu2lbfs

Besides, Joueur du Grenier showed that there was a Strawberry Shortcake game on the same system that was much worse!

And are people saying they'd rather play Ride to Hell instead?

  4. I think Chris Neo is proof of what most of us have known for years. Chris is a low quality content creator. His "fame" as Irate Gamer came about because of the plagiarism accusations along with YouTube executives promoting his channel. Since then Irate Gamer fizzled out along with HoVG, Irate the 80's, Haunted Investigators, Alpha Bunch, Ghost Hunting 2.0 and now Chris Neo. We are already seeing Chris lose interest in the show as he is returning to a haphazard schedule. The only successful show Chris leans heavily on a character from one of the most popular video games in the world, features toys which is an extremely lucrative segment of YouTube and most tellingly - is on a channel where Chris is afraid to show his face or even announce that he is the producer.

  5. Chris did not promote the newest Chris Neo video on his Facebook page. Normally I would wonder if her forgot but he did post about it on Twitter. Why would he promote the video in Twitter but not Facebook.

  6. Random, but there's one thing I've been wanting to ask for a while. Remember that Puppet Steve video from a long time ago where Steve does an "interview" with a Lego figure of Deathstroke? I remember BatDan calling the video insulting and one of the worst videos Chris has ever made. I have a confession to make, I know absolutely nothing about Deathstroke. I don't read comics and I never really watched the original Teen Titans show. So I don't know anything about what Deathstroke is like. What is Deathstroke like and how was Chris' portrayal of him insulting? I'm just curious.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I am not a huge comic book reader but my understanding is that Deathstroke was a soldier who underwent an experimental process to increase his strength and endurance. He can also use much more of his brain capacity than the average human. He is an intelligent villain capable of forming complicated plans and carrying them out as well as leading villain teams to against hero groups like Teen Titans. Chris portrayed Deathstroke as, "Kill! Kill! I love to kill!" He made the character extremely one dimensional who gets of on killing people.

      Delete
    2. I think that whenever Chris sees any costumed character who is cast as an antagonist and wields various firearms and other weapons, he always assumes that they want to do nothing but kill people.

      Delete
  7. I have a feeling he records the puppet Steve stuff in advance. Maybe he dedicates one day a week to film them and then one day to edit them. Most of them are short and not much effort or research is put into them. Plus, he does have a baby now so it would make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Good lord, how many times can Chris describe something as “iconic”?

  14. I have a question for everybody. Is it really a big deal to suck at video games? Like let's say you enjoy playing video games, but just happen to be terrible at most of them. For instance, I love Smash Bros, but people always kill me instantly when I play it. There's a lot of games I enjoy playing that I wouldn't consider myself good at.

I'm just wondering because Bores has been insulted on this blog several times for his terrible gaming skills. Not defending his terrible videos, but is being bad at video games really something that people feel the need to insult others about?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A gaming video blogger really ought to have a proficient level of skill at the games they play and review. Bores fails in other areas besides this one, but it speaks poorly to his supposed expertise that he becomes bored or frustrated a short way into the game, relies on cheat codes or Game Genie, or only plays for an hour before handing in a review. It (among other deficits in his videos) suggests he's pretending at being an authority or even at having played these games for very long during the '80s- one wonders exactly what he likes about these games he's so bad at, and it contributes to a feeling that he's trying to mimic James Rolfe's success rather than pursuing some passion project. No one has to, or is supposed to, be good at games, but if you're going to make videos about them supposing a position of authority, crummy games skills are a fatal flaw- people watching documentary videos just want to see experts. Stripped of apparent expertise, his videos only have the comedy skits, which present a separate set of problems.

      Delete
    2. There’s a difference between terrible and claiming you’ve been playing a game for 20+ years when it’s obvious you’ve only heard about the game when watching Nick Arcade back in the 90s and finally got to play it through the convenience of the internet and third party platforms. Plus even the people who are the worst at playing Megaman wouldn’t resort to game genie cheats like moon jumping.

      Delete
    3. There is nothing wrong with being bad at video games. I myself am not very good at some games - multi-player shooters, for example. My K/D ratio is pretty atrocious. It is fine for me to still enjoy playing these games and share my experiences if others find it entertaining. However, it makes my ability to critique multi-player shooters questionable. You need a degree of competence with a medium to be able to effectively review it.

When somebody attempts to review a product without knowing what makes it good or bad or even a basic understanding of how it works, well, it leads to nonsensical things like lamenting the two bonus levels in TMNT The Arcade Game for NES and saying he would rather the developers use the extra room in the cartridge for a 4-player mode and arcade graphics or not being aware that Tekken is a tournament fighting game and failing to review its primary mode in favor of story mode.

Instead of being honest about his lack of gaming skills, Chris attempted to pass himself off as a longtime gamer who knew the ins and outs of these games while not knowing how to pull off certain moves in Tag Team Match M.U.S.C.L.E. or that Toad has worthy abilities in Super Mario Bros. 2.

In short, there is nothing wrong with being bad at video games but that does limit one's ability to provide a fair and thorough review - even if someone like Chris was willing to put in the required level of effort.

You can get over a reviewer being crap at the games if they are knowledgeable or have shown that they enjoy it even if they're not good. Bores is not only bad at most games but he's also ignorant about them and treats them like a chore instead of something he likes to do.

The store is near my company's home office and I don't get out here much, they fly me out every couple months but last time I didn't make it by the store. So, it sold sometime in the last three months or so? That means it was on the shelf for about 27-30 months (IIRC I gave it to them in January 2016)

    3. People aren't not buying the book because of higher ups...they're not buying it because it's poorly written, egotistical mess.

    4. That would imply that people are actually aware of Ghost Hunting 2.0 and took a look at it. No, people are not buying the book because they do not know or even care that it exists. The market for well written ghost hunting books is quite low and practically non-existent for low effort work like Chris's book.

      Delete
    5. @EdgeXL "That would imply that people are actually aware of Ghost Hunting 2.0 and took a look at it"

Every time I check back at that store I'd find the book in a slightly different spot on the shelf, or on a shelf above/below in the same section.

It would seem that people are taking a look at it, and actively deciding it's not worth buying.

I can't remember the price they put on it, but it's just a few bucks (they might've even dropped it to $1)

      Delete
    6. The book is still there. To be fair, most of the free stuff is still there. I guess I'll take it back, maybe I'll donate it to Goodwill and see how long it stays on the shelf there?

      Delete
    7. @Dave. Fair enough, I was speaking in a general sense, though. I mean, I have read the book on Kindle Unlimited and took a Kindle copy when Chris offered it for free so obviously I have looked at it. That said, I would wager that if I were to go to a paranormal convention most people would never have even heard of Ghost Hunting 2.0. There was no high level conspiracy to "suppress" Chris's book, most people just don't care. I mean, it is difficult to give away your old copy of the book for free.

    9. @Radio White Base Okay, I’m sorry if the question I asked sounded oblivious, especially from someone like me who used to watch it a lot and was obsessed (the keyword being “was”). If you hate this eighties overload and want something from another era, that’s fine. It’s just that anytime someone looks at an episode of the show like that, even when I agree with them, I can’t help but feel that they over analyze too much to the point of nitpicking. I don’t want to make any negative comparisons and say that you’re just like him, because just know you’re more reliable, but just watch any episode of Animated Atrocities that targets the show and Mr. Enter’s mannerisms can show what I’m talking about. Also, I tend to feel that some YouTube channels are also fetishists in their own way, but don’t get criticized as much. Examples include:

•Game Xplain, because they only cover games made by Nintendo or other companies made famous by Nintendo, like Capcom and Konami, who were only featured on the channel because their most famous games (Mega Man and Castlevania) were released on NES, or Sega and the PlayStation one mascot games, because the commercials they had outright challenged Nintendo. The only licensed games they ever cover are Marvel vs. Capcom, because they only care about the Capcom part, and Kingdom Hearts, because they only care about the Square Enix part. (Okay that’s not entirely true, but that’s how I feel.) What makes it more aggravating is that they rarely ever say anything negative about the games they cover, especially those by Nintendo. Not to mention that a lot their update videos tend to not be long and only cover individual things in certain games, like Donkey Kong’s updated nose design in the Switch rerelease of Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze. The worst has to be one on Kingdom Hearts III. It’s just telling us the fact that the game finally got release date, and it’s only 50 seconds long. Does that really warrant an individual video?

•Pretty much the entire cartoon community in general, with some exceptions, because the cartoons they talk about are almost always currently running children’s shows. They tend to critique them without really keeping the target audience in mind, and jump to conclusions about their development without looking them up first. TheMysteriousMisterEnter is easily the most notorious.

In conclusion, I accuse YouTube channels for having fetishes for certain things in the same way Seth MacFarlane is an ‘80s fetishist. Yet those channels don’t get as much nutoriority. And that really grinds my gears. You know what else really grinds my gears? You, Chris Bores! Fuck you! Dianne?

      Delete

    10. Actually, I just realized that those channels aren’t as well known. I apologize if my previous comment sounded like an unfair comparison, though my opinions on the channels still stand. They souldn’t have grinder my gears as much as they did. If you ask me, Family Guy’s seasonal rot didn’t truely occur until halfway through season 7, and season 10 was when everything came full circle. The Life of Brian trilogy from season 12 only made things worse. I don’t just hate the later seasons for their overuse of offensive black comedy, but also because of the flanderization of pretty much the entire cast of characters. Quahog is now the home of the most unhappy, miserable, and just downright mean ensemble cast of one dimensional stereotypes I’ve ever seen.

    11. The only family guy joke that actually made me laugh recently was the one where Peter and Cleveland did a parody of a typical MTV reality show and called it “douchebags” where Peter craps off the side of an interstate overpass and right onto Lois’s car, completely traumatizing Stewie.

    12. Honestly, I'm so sick of the Family Guy hate bandwagon! Not only has this crap outlasted the Sonic hate bandwagon from 2005-2010, but like Spongebob, the show has gotten better in recent years. No, not seasons 1-3 "great", that'll never happen again but almost as good as seasons 4-7. Seriously, just saw the trailer to season 17 and it doesn't look that bad. Quagmire is actually being nice to Brian, for once and lot of the violent or unnecessary unfunny humor has been toned down, compared to seasons 9-14.

  21. Honestly, I'm getting tired of seeing his fucking ugly gaping mouth and face at every thumbnail. I don't know if he thinks its a funny face or he is just so egotistic that he posts his face everywhere. Is that suppose to draw me in, it makes me want to not watch his videos. If he loves that stupid face he makes, why not just cover the damn thumbnail with it?

If Friday goes by without a new video from him then Chris will have gone 3 weeks without any new content since the Atari art book video.

  25. Personally I don't think he will. The views aren't there, and if every other video is going to Mario/Game Genie crap, Chris Neo will only die faster.

  27. Off topic: This is very old news, but I want to add this because no one here is willing to talk about anything other than internet phenomena involving Nintendo games and currently running/recently canceled family oriented children’s animations.

The fact that fast charging is considered a “feature” on the next iPhones is absolutely pathetic.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xDqmz8jTJSw

Also pathetic is the fact that the Lightning-to-3.5mm headphone adapter is Apple’s second best selling product at Best Buy.

    Seriously, what happened to Apple?

As for Apple, overcharging for products and adopting features years after the competition is nothing new for them. Nothing happened to Apple. They are simply doing business as usual.

    3. Didn’t you actually watch the video? Just because he didn’t get to follow through with his kick starters doesn’t mean he’s a scammer. He’s still like the nicest guy in prison for all I know. Also, how come you didn’t mention this the last two times I mentioned him on the blog?

    4. Actually, never mind. Don’t answer. I don’t want to end up turning this into another heated debate.

      Delete
    5. No worries about a heated debate - it won't get heated. I am very capable of discussing this topic dispassionately. Believe it or not, I don't actually read every comment on the blog. I may have missed the earlier times you posted about him. As for Rich, let's start with that Patreon scam. Rich promised two live streams per month and then suddenly announced he wasn't doing them anymore. If he had simply done the livestreams he owed his patrons at that time and then removed that promise from his Patreon campaign I would have no issue. However, Rich chose to deny his patrons the content they paid for and he STILL has livestreams as a goal on his Patreon campaign. He is literally still promising a reward he has no intention of fulfilling. That alone makes him a scammer in my book and I haven't even gone into the other reasons I think he is a scammer.

      Delete
    6. That’s fine. I get how one thinks he’s a scammer. From what I looked up on Wikitubia, he has indeed caused some great controversy, but like I said, in my mind, he is kind of like the nicest guy in prison, like a not so good asset flip game sold on Steam that doesn’t make people want to jump out of the nearest window.

Also, I was worried about starting a heated debate, because I have a bad habit of becoming really defensive of my opinions.

    1. I don’t know why so many people knock this movie. I’m a huge Star Wars fan and I enjoyed it overall. I think Star Wars is just one of those tainted franchises where every movie except those in the original trilogy is going to get bashed no matter what.

      Delete
    2. @MacDragard I don't hate The Last Jedi like some do though I think it is fairly middle of the road as a Star Wars movie. I still think the prequels are worse. I also think that the spirit of the original trilogy can't quite be replicated - that was catching lightning in a bottle.

      Delete
    3. Edge, very true. Even Indiana Jones gets the same treatment and when the new one comes out people will be bashing it I’m sure. However I thought temple of doom was the absolute worst.

    4. Just an opinion (a popular one), but I think Episode VIII was the worst of all Star Wars movies (though it has been a long time since I saw the Ewok movie and I never saw the holiday special).

There was a lot wrong with it, but what really irked me was the maker's response to criticism basically calling everyone who hated it a sexist and racist.

I actually really liked Temple of Doom, though I'd say it is the weakest of the original trilogy. The forth is bad but not as bad as people say, it'd be an easily forgettable popcorn movie if it didn't carry the Indy name.

I wish they would've just made the originally planned parts 4 and 5, even if they'd have to do them animated as Phoenix passed away and Ford got too old.

ESB: "Vader's torturing my friends! I have to do something!"
ROTJ: "Vader isn't beyond hope. There is still good in him."
TLJ: "Go away, I want to die."

Also, SuperLeia is the new "Indy and the Fridge".

    7. Ok. People get old and they get depressed, especially when tragedy befalls them. It happens to people all the time in real life and so there’s no reason why it doesn’t happen to fictional characters.

As for Leia, all she did was breathe in space for a few seconds before floating down to a ship, which nearly killed her. Maybe there’s some plothole there but it’s not that far fetched. At least she didn’t take down an entire FO flagship with her force powers. That would have been more ridiculous.

    9. I despise the Canto Bight segments - they were overly long and took time and resources away from aspects of the story that needed more attention. However, I can see the CONCEPT of Canto Bight belonging to the theme of the movie which if failure. All of the major plot points of The Last Jedi saw the characters failing. Luke failed, Finn failed, whats-his-name pilot failed, Rey failed, Rose failed.

There are people out there who can tell effective stories with even less resources than Chris had during the years he produced Irate Gamer season 4. Case in point, James Cameron was living out of his car when he wrote The Terminator.

  31. My Facebook informant told me Chris posted an article talking about how Hollywood celebrities like Will Smith are finding a new home on YouTube and "pushing out" new talent. He then complains about how things have changed and the algorithm has screwed everyone and it's impossible to start a career now.

I don't know, you seem to be doing well with Puppet Steve. Targeting lucrative kids.
And once again, Chris complains about YouTube changing yet doing NOTHING to improve his channel. Yes, the changes YouTube made are ass, but you've done nothing to combat them or adapt to them. You're sounding like a bitter Fox News viewer (which wouldn't surprise me if he was).

    2. There are problems with YouTube's algorithm- and better, smarter YouTubers have struggled to explain them. Trusting Bores to either understand or coherently explain these problems is hopelessly naive. If his description is accurate, he either guessed right or read something by a writer who happened to be correct.

    3. Once again Chris wants to shift the blame so he doesn't have to take responsibility for his failings.

What's really hilarious is that Chris says he noticed this back in 2012 and you had to be able to post a video a day to remain relevant on YouTube. Let's set aside the fact that Chris pretty much does exactly that with Puppet Steve...

Chris claims he saw this in 2012 yet still took about 3 and a half years to complete his "movie"! How many months went between IG episodes back then? In fact, it has been three weeks since the last Chris Neo video!

On the other side of the coin, the man who inspired Chris - James Rolfe - changed his output to match changing tastes on YouTube. James & Mike Mondays is arguably the flagship show for that channel and AVGN is more of a recurring thing.

I would be very interested to see who Chris blames for the performance of Chris Neo.

Youtube is changing for the worst, but it's not because of "Hollywood lib tards". It's because of Youtube. Just becasuse someone is famous, doesn't mean they are a "lib tard". Political parties are really ruining American politics. We are treating them like Sport team. This isn't a Bears game, it's the real world.

I learned of this practice in the You Know What’s Bullshit episode on DVDs, when James was talking about a Bruce Lee collection that doesn’t have Enter the Dragon, but instead Game of Death II. Everyone knows that Bruce Lee died before completing the first Game of Death. Even Game of Death II’s DVD claims that it stars Bruce Lee. It’s false advertising. I also learned about Bruce-sploitation by watching the Cinema Snob. I didn’t know that Peter Sellers also suffered from the practice.

I just got to watch a few of his new videos more closely, and one thing I found crazy was that in the Sewer Shark video, he not only compares (as Batdan said in his original post on the video), but says that the effects are "On par with Star Wars and Captain EO", that a bit ridiculous. At the beginning of same video, he also says welcome to Chris Tube (or something), which sounds pretty dumb now that the channel is called Chris NEO.

  34. As of this writing Chris has gone 4 weeks since posting a Chris Neo video. (He technically still has almost an hour and 40 minutes to post a Friday video but I doubt he will.)

I looked at his other channels to see how many videos he posted in that same four week time frame. Any videos YouTube lists as a month old were not counted.

    3 Zombie Steve videos.

    31 Puppet Steve videos.

No videos posted on the Alphabet Bunch channel and for the sake of discussion I will assume Chris does not have yet another channel we haven't discovered yet.

That makes 34 total videos posted since the Atari art book video. Pretty clear that Chris has little interest in the Chris Neo show.

    3. @MacDragard Chris Bores has never been a "mature adult." He has always been an immature crybaby.

      Delete
    4. There's also nothing really to "admit." Anyone who cares can just tell. I doubt Bores regards Puppet Steve as some great identity bamboozle; it's just a revenue stream.

      Delete
    5. I’m going to play devil’s advocate here for a bit.

There’s nothing wrong with creating revenue streams just to earn cash to make a living. I’m considering doing it myself. Yes, there’s a lot of poor execution, lack of worth ethic and inauthenticity on Chris’s part and he probably can’t even get a job in a professional career field, but truth be told the corporate world sucks especially nowadays when many major companies want to bend over backwards and hire lazy and entitled people from younger generations since they’re “the company’s future” and it makes a manager’s job 10 times harder because they can’t fire them for poor performance without risk of facing legal retaliation.

      Delete
    6. I certainly wasn't attacking the revenue stream for being that; in fact I was describing it as something ordinary rather than a component in some secret-identity scheme.

      Delete
    7. I don't think it has to be an "identity bamboozle". The situation is not complicated. Chris does not blatantly associate himself with Puppet Steve because he fears "haters" are going to derail his efforts and let's face it, the success of Puppet Steve is vital for Chris - especially considering he is married and has children to look out for. He'll never admit publicly but Chris is even aware of the toxicity around the "Irate Gamer" name. That's why he would only say things like "The return of IG?" or "my previous show".

I don't think it is any great surprise that Chris Neo gets mediocre views or that Chris considers that channel to be a low priority (though I do wonder what that sponsor thinks).

The tragedy in all of this (IMO) is that I truly believe that Chris could be an integral member of a creative team. I don't think he is a good writer or an actor but if others took those roles and Chris handled the editing, lighting and logistics then a good product could me made consistently. Unfortunately, Chris would never be able to contain his ego enough to tolerate not being front and center.
