Another Testimony of a Former Irate Gamer Fan by marston

Hey everyone. I know new posts have been slow, but the last two videos barely contained content worth bringing up (I'll address them when we get a video with meat to it). Instead, here's another fan contribution. This one coming to us from TVTropes user marston. After I showed him the blog, more specifically, Robert's testimonial back in October, he wanted to share his own story on how he fell out of favor with the Irate Gamer. Enjoy.

Back in 2007 when I was age 12 years old, I discovered YouTube for the first time and had loads of fun with it, especially when it came to watching videos about various Video Games. I came across AVGN's Friday The 13th review and absolutely loved it. I watched it along with all his other videos that were out at the time. There was one point for a while where he stopped uploading the reviews on YouTube and kept them on Screwattack.com. Before I got the totally ingenious idea of just going to that website and watching his new videos {From my experience, when your young enough you don't always have common sense}, I started looking up other "Angry Video Game Reviewers" and came across people like Wizwar100 and Armake21, finding them just as hilarious as AVGN. Eventually I ran into Irate Gamer's videos, and that's where this story really begins.

When I watched Irate Gamer's videos, I thought the guy was fantastic. The random jokes, the edits he'd make to video games, the fast-paced Family Guy style of humor, even the side characters {Yes, I liked some of them, with Evil Gamer being my favorite one out of what I thought was a colorful cast of quirky and funny characters}, I loved it all. I would get excited whenever he released a new video. And much like fellow ex-fan Robert, I also believed IG whenever he said a game was shitty. I really did think that Super Mario Advance was better then the "Crappy" NES version of SMB 2, just because IG said so, even though in the end the only huge differences between the two are updated graphics, some voice acting and the ability to save your progress. He's also the guy who got me into Indiana Jones via his video on the Temple Of Doom video game, as I was inspired to check out those awesome films because of said video.

There was something that annoyed me though. Something that, in hindsight, I really should have listened to much earlier. A lot of people were accusing Chris Bores of ripping off AVGN. I didn't take them seriously though, and there's another reason for that besides my blind fanboyism towards IG back then. See, back in 2007-2008, there were a LOT of douchebags in YouTube comments who gained the insulting nickname "AVGN Nazis". These people were fanboys who would go and accuse nearly any Angry Reviewer, and possibly even just any video game reviewer in general, of being an AVGN rip-off. Even if your style was different and you didn't take a single joke from the Nerd {Or even cover the same games as him}, you would get accused of ripping his show off just because you reviewed a video game. I remember that at one point even James Rolfe himself told these guys to knock it off. As a result of these annoying twats combined with me hating when people bashed something I liked, I didn't take legit criticisms towards IG seriously and just wrote them off as being more AVGN fanboys. There were some signs that should have been telling, however. I use to follow a ranter known as BigAl2K6. One of the subjects he ranted about was these very same AVGN fanboys. Yet he also did several rant videos on IG and detailed how the guy really was ripping off James as well as giving examples of how he blatantly lies in his videos {For example, Big Al is a huge fan of Kinnikuman, and he showed actual proof on how you can do way more things in the NES game based on it then what Bores showed off}. But being the huge fan of IG I was, I didn't listen to him or even watch more then one of his IG Rant videos. I was baffled at Al's supposed hypocrisy on the matter. "What, he hates AVGN Nazis and yet accuses poor Chris Bores of ripping off the Nerd? Why do so many people hate Irate Gamer? He just wants to entertain people just like AVGN does!" were my thoughts at the time. Looking back now I understand the whole situation, but that's the power of hindsight I guess.

I continued watching IG's videos for a long while after that. I can even name what were once my favorite reviews of his too {Jaws, the Temple Of Doom, and Tetris, especially since I grew up with that last game and the fact that his review of it was actually positive}. At some point though, I just kind of stopped watching his videos. Not for any particular reason that I can remember though, I just stopped going out of my way to watch any more Irate Gamer stuff. Somewhere down the line due to my lack of interest in IG now, I finally started listening to the negative things people had to say about this guy, and not only did I find myself agreeing with them, but also shocked at how much of a douche Bores really is, especially with that message that showed how huge his ego is and even accusing AVGN of ripping HIM off. I think it might have started when I watched some videos from the "I Can't Believe It's Not AVGN" riffing series. The whole reason why I've even been looking up more stuff about Irate Gamer lately is because I recently not only watched a ton of those aforementioned riffing videos, but also due to watching Third Rate Gamer's hilarious parodies of IG. As for Irate Gamer himself though, nowadays when I look back at his series, these videos I once use to love and laugh at, my thoughts on it are similar to how people view the terrible Monster A Go-Go movie that the MST3K crew mocked: It's completely unwatchable without someone riffing on it. None of his jokes are funny, most of the characters are annoying, and his acting is absolutely terrible. And nowadays he's been bashing even more classic games just because "Wah, it's too hard, I hate challenge!". And I've noticed just how badly he's ripped off AVGN too, especially with those terrible DVD's of his. I can't believe that I use to actually like this asshole.

I can thankfully say that I'm still a fan of AVGN though, even to this day. His acting, comedy, insight and just about everything about him is far better then what IG has ever done, including James Rolfe being a far nicer guy then Chris Bores. I still watch his videos every now and then and get a huge kick out of them. Even most of his new stuff is still good too. Maybe someday I might even buy some of his DVD's. That's far more then what I can say for Irate Gamer, who as I said before I won't even touch with a 10-foot pole unless it's a riff video. It is kind of sad though, having once enjoyed IG's stuff. His actions as well as me growing up over time ruined my view of him being a hilarious guy who just wanted to make people laugh. If he had changed his style and wasn't an asshole, maybe I would still be watching his stuff to this day. But he's mostly been just doing the same thing since 2007, and I outgrew it. Nowadays when I watch a funny reviewer it'll be someone like Cinema Snob, Linkara or the aforementioned Nerd. I doubt I'll ever watch an un-riffed Irate Gamer video ever again.

Sorry if this story isn't as insightful as the previous ex-Irate Gamer Fan. My memory isn't as good as his, and both his story and mine cover some of the same stuff to begin with. I will say this however: I've noticed that a fair amount of his current fans are roughly around 12 years old or younger just like I was. This was even pointed out in one of the "I Can't Believe It's Not AVGN" videos. They might annoy you severely, and you can get pissed at them {IG fans or not, kids on YouTube tend to be rather annoying}, but keep in mind that they're tastes will likely change over the years. It happened with me, after all. Try not to hold it against them. Hindsight and Growing Up can really help people see things in a different perspective. They might end up going through something very similar to what I did. Thanks for reading my story.

  1. Sadly, BigAl is now an Irate Gamer apologist. He's been one since 2008, when he claimed the Uncensored Net Noise interview "Didn't expose dick" (his words, not mine).

Also, Bores is behaving exactly how he did in 2009. Reviews even fewer than ever, continuing to make promises he can't keep on when to expect certain reviews, etc.

  2. I used to be the exact same way. I used to really love watching the Irate Gamer with my brother, since I was so much younger at the time and didn't think the criticisms against him were valid. But looking back on it, I *really* lacked the critical thinking skills I needed to see Bores for who he really was. This very blog even helped me see his true colors, and BatDan's posts are all FAR more entertaining than the videos themselves. I guess it means there's hope that the rest of the 12 year olds who watch him can see it the same as well one day.

  3. You know, at this point I'm seriously starting to wonder if it's even logically possible for Chris Bores to make a good video. Not good as in not as many problems, I mean good as in legitimately interesting to watch. Honesly, as long as he never even tries to improve his skills or deflate his ego I think it's mathematically impossible for a legitimate good video to come from Chris.

  4. Could someone tell me the name of Bores' pre IG channel, or the name of one of the videos? i feel like torturing myself a little and i can't find it.

  5. I already wrote my testimony in the last post, but I was an IG fan up until I was informed about all the stuff going on behind the scenes. The truth is for IG, his videos don't have to be great. They don't even have to be good. For him, as long as he makes money off of it, that's all he cares about. That and his ego. I commend him for finding ways to make money other than slaving away at a job, but he's very dishonest and acts unethically. For those of you who are into the Pickup Industry, it reminds me of certain companies that try to act as if the guys running them get laid by a bunch of really hot women when really they're just making up and regurgitating theory to make money. I'm just glad Chris never got into the Pickup Artist community. Then again, he'd fit right in.

This is ridiculous, Youtube has lost itself over the last few years, and I say, this scares me, seeing my favorite YTers being removed on unjust claims in a cinch due to an algorithm.
Witnessing this, EVERY YouTubers are all at danger, and we must take a stand against this injustice. I've been on YT for 5 years, but this has been a major and recent happening within the last few months that must be resolved. Also; the whole saga with Daddy Derek was bullcrap, especially given that video he made trying to justify those phony copyright claims he made (which IHE and Your Movie Sucks promptly refuted) against his movie (I checked it out due to morbid curiosity; I found the writing, acting and production values to be atrocious; and nothing about Cool Cat Saves the Kids made any sense. It's called Mortal Kombat XL and of fucking course they're releasing it when the game hasn't even been out for a whole fucking year. Oh, but do you want to know what the best part is? Mortal Kombat XL is only being sold for Xbox One and PS4, and the PC port isn't even getting the Kombat Pack 2 period. I know the PC port was a train wreck, but this is just fucking ludicrous.

The dad, Richard Heene, is obsessed with becoming famous, and tried for years to sell reality shows before the hoax, and has drummed up a bunch of asinine schemes and business ventures since then. This game, American Chilly, is in fact a merchandising tie-in to a bizarre stage musical starring Balloon Boy & his brothers that they mounted last year. And this is far from the strangest project Richard Heene has attempted to sell the public on.

I can't believe they and Bores found each other. They... have so much in common.

    2. To be fair, I suspect that has to do with a practice I've seen with other (better) youtubers. Basically, the theory seems to go that update videos, vlogs, or previews are now irrelevant - after all, what good is an E3 video promoting a game that's been out for 2 years or something like that? The idea is to clear away glut like that and keep the channel focused on things that are still relevant to have on there and can be rewatched more easily.

    1. Well, this year he gave abysmal reviews to techs that no one cared about and he also badly "reviewed" Lego Dimensions. And in December, he reviewed the Latest "Tales Of..." game and released the latest "History of Badly-convincing-my-haters". So, yeah, you didn't miss much.
      ^-^

    2. So after 25 days into 2016, the only review he posted still is Lego Dimensions. Yeah, I didn't miss anything. :D

    3. Damn. Really looking forward to this game; and this really isn't helping.

    4. Oh, come on! I know Miyamoto said that a delayed game is eventually good, but this is ridiculous!
      -_-

    5. Inafune says the Pc port has bugs and they have to fix it. At least this time there's a good reason for the delay. Better delay than be the next PC port of Arkham Knight.

      Delete
    6. Yeah, that was a fucking mess with how it got pulled from Steam and resulted in many refunds (and made me question the validity of a "PC master race" when the PS4 version has been much better-received; even selling a million units its first day on the market and getting its own bundle. It's one of the games that has me thinking about a PS4 in the near future).

    1. It was amazing. I may not be a fan of the Panthers (apparently they made it in; I was just waiting for the new X-Files to start), but they really made a good TV spot which is already getting traction online before the game next month. #Pokémon20

    2. It was great, yet I still hate how everything was Gen I except for Lucario. Why does GameFreak try to shove him in particular down our throats so much ?

      Delete
    3. He's personally my favorite; doesn't mean I'm always right. I don't get everyone's obsession with Flygon when I find Hydreigon to be more interesting.

  27. Speaking of the Super Bowl, who are you pulling for-- Denver or Carolina?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ugh, seems FNAF World got pulled from Steam. This is a mixed bag for gaming today. For everything good like that #Pokémon20 spot for Super Bowl L; there's been shit like this and the Mighty No.9 delay. Think I'll go try some of the Amiibo Challenges in Splatoon and vent over it while my brother is out of the house for a while.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, it's a good that FNAF World shit was pulled. It was released too early, and even the fans hated it and found it hard to look at. Hell, the review that was declared most helpful on its Steam page at the time was just the word "No."

      Delete
    2. Scott Cawthon allegedly pulled it himself due to bad reviews, and negotiated with Steam to allow refunds to everyone (even though outside the window), so that he can polish and rerelease it.

Based on what I know (having not yet played the games, only watching a couple let's plays), I think all of them were really rushed out. Several sequels came out while I was still trying to find time to play the first. With so many indie games that are in development for several years, I just wondered why four games released in barely over one year wasn't all the same game.

I do give him props for acknowledging his mistakes, trying to improve, and making efforts to appease the customers.

    3. So, looks like it was an Obvious Beta situation then. Thanks for the warning; especially since this isn't the first time something like this has happened. I don't think it's even been that long since that whole debacle with the PC version of Batman Arkham Knight (while my computer could probably run it; the whole mess has me instead seriously considering a PS4 in the near future, since that version had an edge over the XB1 version).

    4. At least Scott Cawthon acknowledges his failure. Unlike the hacks at Digital Homicide.

  29. So, I'm definitely enjoying Splatoon so far. While I was looking for something Zelda-related to tide me over till the Pokémon 20th Anniversary New 3DS comes out, I am glad that this new IP has proven its mettle as the antithesis of every other shooter on the market. There were only so many times I could shoot up grimdark environments in dingy fatigues; so I found splattering everything with neon colors in quasi-90s clothes and running shoes to be a refreshing change of pace. The graphics and gameplay are topnotch to boot, too. As for Boring Man's "Crazy" "review," (sighs) I can officially say it makes me want to splatter him with my Roller. Acting that made Torgo look like Laurence Olivier, trying to pass off basic gameplay mechanics as special moves (since shapeshifting into your squid form is required to refill your ink gauge) and having no clue how the Amiibo challenges worked (I still have quite a few Pikachu bred in my X and Y games who'd give him an Electro Ball up the yin-yang if he told them to go to Hell) all made it an abysmal video. Lastly, I still find the "squid fetish" line particularly tasteless given the amount of Squid Kid Rule 34 there was even before the game came out (when I look for fanart of it or anything I'm into, I try to keep it under PG13 for obvious reasons).

    1. Crisbo cared more about stupid jokes than actually reviewing the game. And given what he thinks a "review" should have, it was pretty inevitable that it was going to suck.

But yeah, Splatoon is the opposite of all those shooters and is proof that you don't need to be gritty or "realistic" to be a good game. Now, where are those fans of Children's Online Daycare that complained about Splatoon winning "Best Multiplayer Shooter of 2015"?
      ^-^

    2. I also managed to set another record on the drinking game; capping the conditions for the Mountain Dew at 0:54. Chris is seriously lacking in "freshness," given how great Retspurae's live riff of the review was (I already have a good amount of weapons; clothes and shoes even after just a week of playing. Definitely plan to do more of the Amiibo challenges and single-player missions soon.).

  30. Of all the characters played by Bores (in other words, not Wise Sage), who do y'all consider the most tolerable? I personally think Devil Bores is the most tolerable. He's still a terrible character, but he's not as terrible as the rest.

  34. So, another Tuesday of nothing. At least my Dr. Mario Amiibo Amazon exclusive came; and I've been working on training with it (I have called him Dr. House). My Lucas is still on order; and Fox is on his way with some DVDs. They should be here on Friday, I guess we'll see what happens then.

  36. I might be a little nitpicky but does any of you notice that Bores really likes to clap his hands a lot? Especially in his non-retro game reviews? I notice this a lot everytime he starts a tech or toy review and also his recent Let's Play video of American Chilly and Revolute.

    2. He occasionally claps his hands, usually when being sarcastic (one example was when he beat classic mode in Smash Wii U). Trust me, it sounds very, VERY grating!
      -_-

      Delete
    3. DSP also clapped his hands over finishing in first place in some Grand Prix matches during the launch weekend of Mario Kart 8, as well as during the launch of Splatoon to mock Nintendo when he felt the matchmaking or connection issues were the company's fault.
It's very irritating to listen to (even during the TIHYDP videos) as it just shows how big his ego is.

  38. So, anyone else see the Detective Pikachu trailer that just leaked? I think it might be an interesting game; and I seriously hope it gets released stateside, since there's definitely a market for it. As for the fact that Pikachu can talk: I'll just deal with that as it comes, as well as all the Sherlock crossover memes I'm seeing right now.
