You Gotta Fight For Your Right to Mario Party! Oh Wait, It's a Dud

Before we tackle the Friday video, here’s a short write-up about the Wednesday video

Bores has started a new “series”, “Best of Irate Moments”. … Can’t you write “Irate Gamer Moments”? Why are you so opposed to writing Gamer?
As the title suggests, it’s Bores showing what he believes to be his best moments. Rather, it’s Bores over-explaining his jokes!
Here, he showcases his parody of the G.I. Joe PSAs from that same review. Prefacing the short scene by explaining how G.I. Joe had PSAs! I know I’ve asked this before, but do you really take your audience for idiots Chris?
He also claims that there’s not many pictures of Flint on the internet. … I can Google “Flint G.I. Joe” and find a lot of pictures. Flint wasn’t some obscure one-shot character, he was a main Joe. Were you just being lazy? Did you just type "Flint" and hope that was good enough? You need to be specific for names like that. He's not someone like Monkey D. Luffy where the name is unique enough to know what you want.

Can’t wait to see more self-indulgent “best of” moments.

Anyway, the Friday video.

It’s actually a Neo episode. Holy crap they exist! His first one since South Park: The Stick of Truth back in … March 2014. Shit, it’s really been a year.
I recall that he said on Facebook that even making IG Neo was “too much time”, after having said Neo videos were “low effort” and he could “easily whip them up”. Pick a story and stick with it! I guess we’re back to “low effort” now.

What game will he look at? Mario Party 10. Whoa, really? That only came out a week ago. That’s a pretty speedy turnaround for Bores.
Going by the title though, this sounds more like “Amiibo featuring Mario Party 10”
Also, I think this is his first review of a Nintendo title in a long time. Wii U titles beforehand were third party (Sonic Lost World, Rayman Legends). *checks* Yep, last Nintendo title was New Super Mario Bros. 2 back in February 2013.

The video opens and look at all the Amiibo on his desk. I hope those were obtained out of pocket and not given to him. I see he added “Smash Bros” Yoshi, “Smash Bros” Bowser, “Super Mario” Mario, “Super Mario” Luigi, and Toad.
He says there’s actually two reviews. One on YouTube, and one on GotGame. Shit… didn’t expect to pull double duty. Not sure why the actual game review is GotGame “exclusive”, it’s also uploaded to YouTube. Albeit unlisted. Maybe his contract only allows him to review modern games at GotGame? No… he’s posted modern game reviews to YouTube as well. He’s just inconsistent and weird.

The YouTube only video will be his overview of the Amiibo that work with the “Mario 10 game” (his words not mine).
He goes over how Mario Party 10 came with a new line of Amiibo, how the Mario figure is exclusively bundled with the game.
“You can’t buy them individually until… mid-April sometime” Actually it’s April 3rd, NoA announced this yesterday. You would know this if you followed them on Twitter.

Blah blah blah…
Different games have different bases. He mentions the rumored Splatoon amiibo. “I have no idea what that game’s about” YOU WERE AT E3 LAST YEAR! They had the game! How did you not see it?! Oh right, he was probably too busy in the Skylanders booth…

He states that nine Amiibo work with the game. Kind of… You have the six new Mario characters, but then there’s the six Smash Bros versions, plus three others that only have Smash Bros Amiibo at the moment (Rosalina, Donkey Kong, and Wario). So it’s more 15.
The non-Mario Amiibo are “Read Only” and merely provide Scratch Tickets that give bonuses. Reading this off the Amiibo wiki (yes, it exists),
“They released five new ones” Incorrect! They released SIX new ones! Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, Bowser, and Toad. This isn’t counting the Golden Mario.
He even lists the characters, and somehow doesn’t realize it’s six. Also, he just calls Peach “Princess”. What is his aversion to saying “Peach” and “Zelda”? He always just calls them “Princess”.

He states he picked up Luigi because he didn’t like the Smash Bros version. What? How can you not like the Luigi Plank?
He says “five” again. MATH!
He has the Golden Mario! That also better be out of his pocket. If he’s going to start doing this, he has to pay for his Amiibo like the rest of us. I pre-ordered my Golden Mario, I got mine!

He cuts to gameplay. With face cam.
Hold on, is he recording the TV with his fucking camcorder? HE’S GOING BACKWARDS!
He just explains how the Amiibo work. If you care, you can obviously find other BETTER sources.
After that, he just drones on some more … mentions Toad is hard to find (I hear he’s getting easier now) and that’s essentially it.

Right then, onto the actual game review.

0:05 - 0:18: Instead of sitting at his table, IG is on his couch, filmed in a little square over his TV in the background. … He’s going even more backwards! This is a terrible way to film your review.

0:19 - 1:12: The face cam then cuts to the corner and he really is filming the TV with this camcorder. GotGame… how have you not dumped him?
IG starts by reading off the menu options, he goes to Bowser Party and is “unsure” about something. Yeah, this is the worst possible way to do a review. Off-the-cuff “impressions” as you play.
He shows the Bowser Party games, and picks Jewel Drop (a Puyo Puyo knock-off). Instead of explaining what Jewel Drop is, he brings up that Mario Party… is a Party game. What gave THAT away?
Also, the TV cuts to a different segment while he says it. I don’t know what’s going on.

1:13 - 1:50: We then get another cut. He says there’s “two main modes” with Mario Party and Bowser Party. … Wait, shouldn’t this have gone before the Bowser Party segment? Did you even script this? I mean, there’s editing so he did put it through post, but did he plan this out in any way, shape, or form?
He mentions it’s a “group experience” again. Was the Bowser Party segment an unused take he forgot to remove?
He lists the stages because… that needed to happen.

1:51 - 2:53: He starts trying to explain the game. It’s a board game with mini-games. He doesn’t mention the stupid car mechanic they introduced in 9. Then again, that would imply he played any of the previous Mario Party games. R.I.P. Hudson Soft…
“What’s interesting about the Wii U version is that the Game Pad… is a new feature on this” … He seriously said this. This is yet another reason he fails as a critic, he is way too fucking obvious in everything he says! No shit the Game Pad is “new”, it’s the first Mario Party game on Wii U, the console that attempts to make use of the Game Pad. Even at this point when Nintendo knows they screwed up, they’re going to keep making use of it (like with Splatoon and the now delayed Zelda).

IG enlarges his face cam to explain how the Game Pad functions. Charge your Game Pad Chris! I can see the red light!
Anyway, he explains how Bowser is locked up in the Game Pad and the locks correspond with dice rolls and he can get free

2:54 - 4:13: He goes over some of the mini-games… I don’t care…
He says things are a lot more fun with more people, and you can “duke it out” and “trash talk each other”. Thanks for telling me what I can do in local multiplayer Chris. I was so lost without your benevolent wisdom.
Blah blah blah blah blah…

4:14 - 4:47: He cuts back to the main menu and gives a boring explanation on how Bowser Party works. Zzzzzz

The video ends back at the main menu.
IG says the game is an “experience”, and then claims that “every game for the Wii U is based on the family experience”. Are you kidding me?! Zombi U, The Wonderful 101, Wind Waker HD, Bayonetta 2, Lego City Undercover, Shovel Knight, the upcoming Xenoblade Chronicles X and Devil's Third, these are games that don’t have multiplayer OR are not appropriate for “family experiences”.
Then he says he tells people “don’t get a Wii U unless you have many people to play with” *headdesk* His ignorance is limitless. Even the games with multiplayer like Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, and Super Smash Bros are fun on their own (the latter help thanks to online… which Bores likely never uses). Even in videos as boring as this you find ways to piss people off!
“If that’s your demographic, that’s great. If not then go with the PS4 or Xbox One”. Show me where I can play Nintendo exclusive titles on those Chris? Oh that’s right. Especially when more and more games are being released in an unfinished state. That's why the Wii U Zelda was delayed, they still had work to do and felt like they couldn't finish it this year. Plus the mountain of disappointments like Titanfall, Destiny, Evolve, The Order 1886. At least Bloodborne is awesome.
This feels like more “Nintendo is kiddy” garbage.

EDIT: I went to check on the video to see the dislikes (it has a lot). I read through the comments (there was barely any) and one mentioned a "disappearing Game Pad" at 5:04. I checked and there's a Jump Cut where the Game Pad disappears from Chris' hand. More sloppy editing. You really couldn't do the line in one take?

This is an odd video. The middle is extremely boring, but there’s the major editing problems in the beginning, and his ignorance at the end. I’m just at a loss for words.

Monday then? Maybe?

  1. My word this was a massive trainwreck. I imagine that unless he can keep up with his new obsession, he'll probably do more Skylanders and stupid skits. Be seeing you, Dan.

  2. Wait, Zelda Wii U is being delayed? FUCK! That was one of the major reasons I planned to buy a Wii U this year. First Mortal Kombat X on PS3 and now this. Why must we have the bad now, but the good later? Oh yeah, cause then the games are fucking shit...like BORES'S REVIEWS!!! (Insert MLG montage here.)

Also, I doubt Bores even has a PS4 or Xbox One, so he's one to talk. Unless GotGame gave him one or even both of them. Seriously, how unpopular are they to resort to Bores? Oh well, both consoles are not worth buying anyway.

  3. To be fair, I also prefer the Mario series Luigi pose over the Luigi plank. And I was also able to pre-order Gold Mario, I was lucky enough to check while eating lunch the very first time they went up.

Really getting sick of the "Nintendo is for kids" attitude. It's obvious they're making efforts to change this false perception about them, and I haven't heard anyone call Nintendo for kids in a while until now.

    1. Appreciate the sentiment heaps, as a Nintendork. It's an unfair stigma that has stuck just because of arseholes hating Nintendo's main franchises.

I'm spewing that Australia misses out on some gold yet again -- very bitter pun intended. I do not expect us to see Gold Mario on these shores.

    2. At least you're not missing out on Mortal Kombat anymore.

    3. I'm not even sure where the misconception of Nintendo being a kid's company comes from. Just because they have some popular franchises that aren't vulgar or needlessly complicated, coupled with distinctive cartoony graphics and whimsical music, doesn't automatically mean they're childish. Not to mention a lot of these games, like DK and Mario, are still very challenging in terms of gameplay. If anything, it's a lot of other games that think the more swearing and gore and tits they throw onto the screen the more mature they are, or pretentious emotional fiat shite like David Cage's work or a lot of the histrionic toss that ended up ruining large parts of Mass Effect's sequels (not least the ending of the trilogy), that are the really childish experiences. Games that think if they're making some really obvious, usually misguided and one-dimensional political or social commentary created in an echo chamber of non-diverse ideologies, or games that just up the violence even though violence is already over-represented in games, are becoming really puerile in my eyes.

AVGN hypothesised that it began with Mortal Kombat having the blood removed on SNES, even though the Genesis version also had the blood turned off albeit there was a code to put it back in. I don't know if this is a commonly-held view or not because I didn't have an SNES growing up and didn't really get into the debate as to which console was better, but it seems possible. Either way, Bores has clearly just accepted this intellectually lazy myth at face value because he thinks it'll make him look more grown up, when it does the exact opposite. I refer back to the CS Elliot quote I think I posted here a few years ago, the sign of maturity is to not feel insecure or the need to overcompensate by dismissing things as childish.

  4. Oh my goodness, the stupidty in these two videos is killing me. *sigh and smh*
    Where do I begin?

    Mario Party 10 Wii-U & Amiibo Review & Thoughts:
    - While you can use your Mario Amiibo figures from Smash Bros. for Mario Party 10, Bores fails to say that by doing so, the saved data of the Amiibo for Super Smash Bros. will be deleted (Amiibo figures, to my knowledge, can only carry data for one Wii U-compatible game at a time).
    - How does Bores not know what Splatoon is? It was one of the most original and creative games at last year's E3 event. Nintendo Treehouse Live @ E3 showcased it and the game also made an appearance at PAX East.
    - As Batdan said, there were 6 new Amiibo figures released for Mario Party 10, not 5 as Bores says. The Nintendo Direct video from January 14th confirmed this.
    - Is this the first time Bores has called Toad by his real name instead of Toadstool? That's surprising...
    - Once again (during the Amiibo Party mode of Mario Party 10), no mention of how using Super Smash Bros. Amiibo figures will override their saved data for that game. Goodbye level 50 Amiibos, along with any equipped gear and customized movesets.
    - He says you win by collecting the most coins in Amiibo Party. That's only half-true when it comes to Mario Party games prior to Mario Party 9 and Island Tour. In addition to coins, you are supposed to gather the most stars across the board (you can clearly see a star at 4:55).
    - I think it could have been worth noting how the Toad Amiibo can also work with Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (according to the aforementioned Nintendo Direct video).

Mario Party 10 Wii-U – Irate Gamer Neo Video Game Review:
    - I love how he glosses over the minigames on the main menu. You'd think he could have put a little more effort in explaining each one instead of just the Jewel Drop one, but when has Bores ever bothered to put in extra effort?
    - Mentioning Mario Party mode and Bowser Party mode twice in less than a minute? I think it was a mistake on his part and/or he didn't care.
    - Weird how he doesn't mention the (controversial) party bus/car mechanic that Mario Party 9 implemented, considering how many comments I've seen in the past from people that have bashed the game for using this mechanic.
    - Bores just explaining the board game mode to us. Has he ever played a Mario Party game before? We don't need everything explained to us (e.g. how spaces work, how dice blocks), especially since millions of people are familiar to the Mario Party franchise prior to this video.
    - That was the WORST explanation of minigames in a Mario Party game I've seen experienced. Aside from Bores sucking terribly at them, he treats his audience like idiots? A free-for-all means every man for his/herself? 1 vs. 3 means one player goes solo against the remaining three? Wow, thanks Bores. I never would have guessed otherwise. Also, I once again love how he simply glosses over a few minigames without giving them any additional details.
    - More basic explanations about how a Mario Party board game is played, because he thinks we're idiots that have never played a single game in the franchise before.
    - No mention of how unfair and one-sided the Bowser Party mode can be?
    - Wait, no mention of the Amiibo Party mode? Yes, I know he briefly mentioned it in the former video, but why not review it here? If you are calling this a review, then you should, you know, REVIEW it by talking about all the individual modes and features.
    - There are plenty of games for the Wii U that are not based around the family experience. ZombiU is one of them; I have had so much fun with it and I hope Ubisoft will make a sequel.

Wow, two videos in one day and they were both full of fail. Who knows when we'll see something of this caliber from Bores next, if ever.

  5. While he could've done better researching dates by a simple google search, your twitter comment is pretty stupid in itself. You act like He or anyone else HAS to follow their twitter.

Your "mountain of disappointments" list is funny as well, last time I checked most of those were critically acclaimed...sounds more like you're a Nintendo Fanboy. (see how easily I can do that too?)

    1. Aggregate reviews for each game you mentioned (MetaCritic and GameRankings):

Titanfall - anywhere between 87% and as low as 70% for the 360 version
      Destiny - around 75%
      Evolve - around 75%
      The Order 1886 - 64%

This suggests 'generally mixed to favourable reviews', none of which constitutes a 'critical acclaim' consensus with the possible exception of Titanfall on PC. Besides which, the critical consensus has been generally dismissed as a source of authority by gamers for years now. They have financial agendas and cannot be considered truly objective in most cases, often playing the appeal to the authority of developers and publishers much like you yourself are playing to the media's authority now. All four of these games received huge amounts of criticism by consumers when they were released, either for misleading advertising, an unfinished product, or locking large amounts of content behind microtransactions and overpriced DLC. None of that necessarily makes them bad but it does, in fact, make them disappointments. But hey, if you find it 'funny' that customers continue to get fobbed off with rushed releases and are expected to pay to have the buck passed to them, good for you. Maybe your opinion will change if you ever have to be fiscally responsible for your own games, though.

    2. And just so you know, I don't own a Wii U and am not particularly a fan of Nintendo. I'm just tired of bullshit logic like yours that if you're critical of something, that means you must be a blind fan of something else. It's tiresome.

      Delete
    3. Among that list, I think Titanfall was probably the least disappointing. A bit bare-bones in terms of content, but it at least felt like a finished game and was still incredibly fun.

      Delete
    4. Hurt feelings much?

You post metacritic ratings, yet proceed to say that gamers generally don't use critic reviews..make up your fucking mind.

Lots of stupid fucking assumptions too, I see. Get off your fucking soapbox.

Wanna talk tiresome? You and your fucking high horse and biases.

      Delete
    6. You actually believed the critics' reviews? Pfftt...

Titanfall is a disappointment because there's no actual campaign mode. The mode that is mildly considered a campaign is only 4 hours long, and multiplayer feels shallow because despite having different gameplay elements, it still feels like every other multiplayer shooter.

Don't get me started on Destiny. I did try out the game myself at my cousin's house and wow...it was BORING. The gaemplay feels like every other shooter, it takes FOREVER to kill bosses, it's easy to get lost and separated from your teammates and collecting money (I forgot what the currency in the game is called) and items is TEDIOUS.

Evolve is also a major disappointment because like Destiny, it's easy to get seperated from your teammates, it takes a LONG time to find the monster/hunters when the match begins and in-game purchases are a joke.

And finally The Order 1886, despite looking beautiful, the AI is IDIOTIC and majority of the game isn't actual gameplay, just Quicktime events which now at this age, is a joke in video games.

  6. Regarding Bores's clip collection series, I'll actually play devil's advocate here and mention that NC, Spoony, and AVGN (well, Mike Matei on AVGN's behalf) have all also released self-indulgent clip collections or "my best reviews/best jokes" videos. However, at least they credit the audience with the intelligence to already understand the jokes and talk to the fans on the same level. Bores was just congratulating himself for what he thought was a great joke that nobody would get without his insight. He was wrong.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah, that last part is the problem.
While there have been self-indulgent clip shows from better reviewers in the past, they had the decency to respect their audience. The only "explanation" given was the episode name the clip was from so viewers can have context (and in case someone hasn't seen the episode).

Bores on the other hand was just stroking his ego over a joke that wasn't funny in the first place, and has been done so many times before. Pork Chop Sandwiches anyone?

    2. And the Nostalgia Critic made a hilarious joke about those clip shows in the beginning of his Battlefield Earth review.

    3. Exactly . Fensler Films did much better PSA parodies with their gag dubs. Also, it sucks about the Zelda U delay, but I think Wind Waker HD and Hyrule Warriors should satisfy me till then, not to mention the original game on Virtual Console for a $5 spot.

  14. This is off-topic but I would like to mention it to you guys. It's regarding AVGN.

In the most recent AVGN episode "Hong Kong 97" they mentioned the word "octodecillion." I thought this was just a made up number they pulled out of their rear until I found this article:

    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_large_numbers

I didn't even know that the number scale went up that high. It is 10 to the 57th power. Is there a way to type that? I can't find a way to shrink the 57? Why we would ever need a name for numbers this big is beyond me. I did the math and even the estimated size of the universe is not even close to 1 octodecillion of any unit of measurement let alone septendecillion.

As far as Bores coming out on The Irate Gamer Game? I smell a rat. His story isn't lining up as usual. He claims it came out last summer, no fall of 2013 if I am not mistaken. And as far as him being scammed, I think it had more to do with him rushing it to release to compete with the AVGN Adventures game by Screwattack. Chris found out that it was coming out soon so he told the team to hurry it up and get it out before/around the same time of the AVGN Adventures release. They cut corners and used reskins over building it from scratch to get it done on time. Chris acts liek he doesn't know what happened to it. I am assuming Apple told them they are removing due to copyright infringement of Commander Cool. Chris has been online as Ladybuggin trolling people spreading this rumor.

    1. When you don't have the ability to superscript numbers, 10 to the 57th power would be written 10^57, using the carat symbol (Shift-6). A googol, of course, is 10^100, and a googolplex is 10^(a googol)... try and visualize THAT bastard.

As for this newest video, I see him trying to have it several ways in his favor... he makes a non-apology apology (I was deceived!), he gets to sell a new product at a massive markup (The whole game including the art maxed out at 5 bucks; now the art alone is $9?), and he gets to fill his three-videos-a-week quota with another stream-of-consciousness soliloquy and minimal post-production.

    2. Mixing up the release date was probably due to Bores' crappy memory. He never remembers anything right and he doesn't do much research.

    3. @Harrod Graham's number makes googolplex look extremely puny by comparison. It's so big that it would be impossible to write the damn thing in scientific notation (it would take up all the space in the observable universe, and even then you'd be nowhere near close).

@fusioncode9 Bores' memory capacity is so bad that he even forgets the names of key characters on his show (he once called Eric Allen "Blue Sage" while posing as his mommy).

    1. Could you provide some proof? I did some math at one point and I think 1 decillion centimeters is equal to about 93 Billion Light years, the estimated diameter of the universe.

  16. How much truth do you think there is to his soliloquy? I would say that he is again fudging the facts.

    1. I can't trust any first-hand account from him after last year's "opening up" video. "I later found out the contest was rigged, and I'm sure James had a hand in picking the winner?!?!" With no corroborating facts?

    2. And again, I'm supporting Mike's comment of how the contest WASN'T rigged. Especially considering James isn't egotistical enough to do something like that.

BTW, how many big-name users are also falling for the Bores' lies?

    3. I didn't wait for Mike's comment to doubt Bores' claim. Even if I trusted Bores like family, my reaction to the revelation of a rigged contest would be "Holy shit! What did you find out, and when and how?" And I'd urge him to make a video airing all the dirty laundry and exposing the fraud. Think we'll ever get a scrap of evidence from him? No, just "I found out the contest was rigged... moving on to another topic."

He usually comes off as a serial liar, but the contest claim raises the slight possibility of a paranoia/persecution disorder.

did you screencap Mike's comments debunking da bores?

    1. If you're talking about what he said on the "Truckload of Crap" post, I capped that.

  18. The guy who write the batdansuck blog did a good job debunking the Bores. He has a slightly different perspective on him that is equally interesting to read: https://batdansucks.wordpress.com/

  19. He says he is selling prints.... can he do that? Seeing how he definitely didn't draw them, and judging from how little he knows about the game's fate... he probably didn't consult the artists about selling it.

    1. The game publisher's website is down, and they were an overseas company anyway, so I don't think this will be his ruination.

  20. Haven't watched the video about his game, I'll wait for BatDan's breakdown.

What I don't get, why did Bores even deal with Mad Media Labs anyway? He already knows DatBoiDrew who could've made a better game, and it certainly wouldn't have taken three years.
Hell, in three years Bores could have learned to program and made the game himself. Using something like Multimedia Fusion or RPG Maker would have taken even less time than that.

    1. Chris is busy hunting ghosts. He has no time to learn a programming language, let alone make a game with one.

    2. Even if he did, Bores' laziness, unwillingness to do research, and the fact that he can't even remember the names of certain characters of his show sometimes means that he probably doesn't even have the mental capabilities to do so.

At best, he would create the "Hello, World!" program and put it up for his fans to download while claiming it to be groundbreaking and advanced. Something tells me that even if he did get far beyond that, he'd probably use it only for ghost crap.

  21. Ironic that it seems like Chris is the only one with all these problems. James is able to get his work/products out in a timely manner despite setbacks, unexpected delays etc. Either Chris is the most unlucky person in the world or he is not pulling his weight. I prefer to believe that latter.

  24. New video up. To sum it up, it's just "Hey everyone, check out my green screen that I use. I only paid 2 bucks for it at Wal-Mart!"

    1. And so uninformative. James would explain why a cheap tarp works just as well as a Hollywood green screen, how to light it properly, and he'd show us on his computer exactly how to process the raw footage. Bores assumes that his viewers know what a green screen is to begin with, and I'm sure many do, but he doesn't get into any of the technical or insidery aspects of it. James talking about fixing an imperfect shot in Photoshop (Making of AVGN) is much more informative and interesting than the small amount of data Bores gets out.

At least he's making his 3-a-week quota so far. Being this prolific could hypothetically lead to overall improvement of his skills, if he was committed to improving. This situation is as likely to lead to burnout and exhaustion.
