Spoopy Remakes and Going Down to the Port

E3 is upon us! It’s looking like one hell of a show this year. I’ll enjoy the brief reprieve between the show’s ending and Bores uploading his half-assed content. But before we can get to the main event…

What did this week bring?

Tuesday saw the return of movie reviews. After the return of the Summer Movies list, I felt this wasn’t far behind. When was the last time he reviewed a movie? Let’s see… Man of Steel back in July 2013. Jeeeeez…
So what’s he going to look at? The recently released remake of Poltergeist. Odd first choice for a review. Especially since he’s never reviewed a horror movie before, I have to wonder if he knows what makes good horror or if he thinks “jump scares am good enough”

I haven’t even clicked on the video and already there’s a problem. He’s now calling himself the “Irate Cinema Gamer”, or just “Irate Cinema” if the title card is anything to go by. There’s way too much wrong with both of these. First off, something feels off about “Irate Cinema Gamer”, like he’s not someone that reviews movies. Rather, someone that reviews games based on movies, or games that try too hard to be like movies *cough*David Cage*cough*
Even if we look at his shortened name, Irate Cinema, that still feels wrong. Irate Gamer makes sense as “gamer” is an interest and adjective. Cinema isn’t a hobby, there are so many other adjectives he could have gone with. Irate Film Fan, Irate Cinephile, Irate Moviegoer.
Or maybe he could switch the two words around. Cinema Irate, no that’s still stupid. Let’s get rid of the “irate” altogether and replace it with something like “Snob”. … Wait.

*reads the description*
“I'm trying out a new style of reviewing movies, I hope you enjoy!” Another new style? I get the feeling Chris is really desperate to find his own voice, but is unable to do it so we’re getting a shitload of style changes. Even so, his Splatoon “CRAZY” review felt way too similar to the crap PewDiePie does.

Let’s see what his new style is.

A few seconds in, there’s a lot of rapid jump cuts. I swear I’ve seen this type of video before… from so many other YouTube users.
“Why they felt the need to remake it I don’t know” Because Hollywood is a creatively bankrupt cesspit of producers that are more concerned with having enough money to do cocaine off a hooker’s ass than if a movie is actually original or creative.
He brings up the RoboCop remake for some reason. “Replace the old piece of shit” Hey, both the original Poltergeist and RoboCop were great movies.
He says to “run away from this movie like it was a ghost”. That’s advice for people watching right? Because you would probably want to chase that ghost.
He mentions that the original movie still holds up to time… and then we get a picture of a distorted clock and the Macintosh computer start up noise (at least something that sounds like it). What was that?
He goes over some more of the movie, lots of jump cuts, there seems to be a new thing where it cuts and suddenly there’s a filter, likely to signify this is “wacky”. He says “the plot falls flat on its face” and it cuts to him (with the filter) falling forward (with his mouth open for some reason…) This is really stupid.
“Watching this movie is like being eye-raped by the Creature from Black Lagoon” … What? Is the movie bad visually? He doesn’t say.

He brings up aspects from the original. After he mentions one, we get the “wacky filter” repeating it in fear. Then for some reason windows are next to him. What is this? What is the point of the windows?
He keeps going then gets to a spoiler alert, which he signifies by shouting “SPOILER ALERT” with sirens blaring and a red filter over the screen. Then when he says the spoiler, the “wacky filter” gasps in shock and he yells at himself.
I haven’t registered a god damn thing he’s said about the movie.
At the end he says do something else and mentions “go play Dungeons & Dragons”. … Why that game specifically? Then “wacky filter” asks about… Pogs. Why? Just… what?

So from what I got, his “new style” is a lot of frantic editing and fast cutaways. With “jokes” that go by so quickly that you don’t have enough time to register if what you saw was funny or not.
However, this “new style” is even less original than the one he used for the Splatoon review. This is exactly like Chester A. Bum, or Black Nerd Comedy, or many of the other YouTube reviewers that use a lot of fast-paced jump cuts. Even non movie reviewers like Nigahiga or RayWilliamJohnsan or any of those guys that were popular long ago. Another example of Chris jumping on a bandwagon, only this is YEARS late. Hell, this type of video making is ridiculed and mocked for how terrible it is (such as DasBoSchitt’s YouTube AVE series).

Friday’s video is another Top 5 list. People love lists, that’s why his last one got soooo many views. Oh wait no, it somehow got less than Splatoon, Spy Hunter, and that Charlie Charlie video.

This one is about Chris’ favorite Arcade to NES ports. Strange choice for a list.
He’s doing this because Spy Hunter. Huh, I guess he’s not going to do a Let’s Play then.

First is Contra. I will never understand why he reviewed it as if it were a bad game, he keeps putting it on his “Games I love” lists.
“I played this long before anyone knew about the ‘Up Up Down Down’ code” It’s the Konami Code Chris. The KO-NA-MI Code. Also, suuuuure you did.
“It made it so much cooler because you could get much further and see the ending” Or you could practice and get to the ending without using the code. It can be done.

Second is Paperboy. If he ends up reviewing this for some reason, will Third Rate Gamer come out of retirement?
Not much to this one. Says everyone had it, describes what you do in the game.

Third is Tetris. HOLD IT! Tetris didn’t start as an Arcade game. It was first released on the Electronika 60, a Soviet computer. It was then released to multiple computers like MS-DOS, Amiga, ZX Spectrum, Atari ST, MSX, and many others.
Well, the Tengen version did start as an Arcade game. But that’s another version entirely. Not to mention he’s showing the Nintendo version in both his hand and in the gameplay on screen. That DIDN’T start as an Arcade game.
“… the Game Boy version” HOLY CRAP HE KNOWS IT EXISTS! I mean, his entire Tetris video he didn’t acknowledge the most popular version of the game. Seriously, how does he miss so many crucial statements in his reviews? It’s like he wants the world to see him as an ignorant moron that shouldn’t be taken seriously, yet at the same time wants people to take his ghost crap and history lessons at face value.
Blah blah blah it was so amazing blah blah blah

Fourth is Gauntlet.  He’s holding the cartridge upside down…
“It allowed for four players at one time” Uhhh no it didn’t, not the NES version at least. Are you confusing it with Gauntlet II? That was compatible with the Seattleite and Four Score.
He complains that there’s no ending. Actually, the NES version does have an ending. It’s just that the game has 100 levels so it can feel like there’s no ending. Unlike Spy Hunter which legitimately doesn’t have an ending and you made one up just so you could have a reason to destroy the game… your logic makes zero sense Chris.

Fifth is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game. HOLD IT! Didn’t you say in your review that the game was “terrible”, that it looked like a “pixilated nightmare” and that the extra levels were pointless? I still remember how you said they should have removed the extra levels and focused on making the game look closer to the Arcade version, showing how much of an ignorant asshole you really are.
“It did pale in comparison, but it was still cool” That is NOT what you said in 2007. Is this an attempt at damage control? Pretty fucking late on that.

This was a joke.

The E3 festivities start Sunday. Bores will likely be there as GotGame is still putting him up on a pedestal (for some reason). Who knows if we’ll even get any videos over the next week?

  1. I think it might be possible that GotGame is doing all this shit for Bores so that more people notice him and so that he embarasses himself even more. That's the only logical explanation I can see.

Also, let's hope that Egoraptor doesn't ruin the Nintendo World Championships.

  2. Yeah, definitely too little ; too late on that, Chris . I will always remember the TMNT II review as the one that got me to hate you. At least he agrees the Poltergeist remake sucks and was unnecessary . So, onto E3. Looking forward to Yooka-Laylee, Star Wars Battlefront, Star Fox Horizon, Guitar Hero Live, Rock Band 4; and countless others I expect Boring Man to totally gloss over.

  3. Contra: Well, shit, he admitted that he could never finish Contra without the code, and that may be the closest we'll get to honesty, humility or class out of him. But he spent about 30 seconds talking about the game. James did a seven-minute video on specifically his own memories of Contra, and it was all so much more interesting than this.

Paperboy: "And I believe it was first... uh, an arcade game." Well, don't look it up or anything. That remote point is pretty tangential to the topic of this particular video. Also, "Everyone that I knew had Paperboy. It was just one of those NES staples that everyone had." So here's the premise of that wildly popular title with zero critical insight. "And hopefully they'll keep subscribing to you..." YouTubers, write your own joke.

Gauntlet: "I remember spending a couple mornings playing for four or five hours straight trying to see if I could get to an actual ending, and I never did find one, so I don't think there ever was one." OK... eight to ten hours of play means you've probably 100-percented the game and found everything that can be found. That he doesn't look it up speaks to his laziness, and that he still as an adult doesn't know speaks to his small circle of friends (at least gamer friends). I sometimes feel bad for Bores, for reasons like this. Even the AVGN's encyclopedic knowledge of games comes partially from James' friendship with Mike; having few friends is sad on its face, and I know from experience that creating quality in isolation can be a tough game. But Bores burns through a lot of that pity by pretending that he IS an expert.

TMNT: I would love for an interviewer to pin Bores down and ask, "What do you think 'iconic' means?" And give him a good two minutes to try and answer.

  4. Coming soon: Irate Teley-Gamer's Top 5 best Video Game cartoons
The contents are Sonic Boom, Mortal Kombat Defenders of the realm, the Legend of Zelda, Saturday Supercade and of course, Captain N the game master.

    1. Personally, I think Sonic Boom is decent as Sonic shows go; being an action-comedy mix of Teenage Mutant Ninja Hedgehogs (the irony was not lost on Black Nerd Comedy or VG Cats). I was trying to remain optimistic about the demo, but Shattered Crystal seemed kind of floaty in terms of physics. It's a bit more action-oriented than AoSTH; but sillier than SatAM, and it's definitely better than Underground was. Also, they're apparently making another handheld game in Fire and Ice. Hopefully there won't be as many hilariously-bad glitches (looking at you, Knuckles jump).

      Delete
    2. I honestly hate Boom with a burning passion. It expects you find everything about if funny, explains next to nothing about itself and has one of the most unlikeable leads I've ever seen. And I'm not even going to mention the large amount of insults it makes to Sonic and his fandom. I'm fine with people liking it, it's just most fans never shut up about it.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, it also really says something about how Cartoon Network is treating action shows lately (screwing it over to a graveyard slot make me thankful for online streaming). I'm also seeing the subs of Sonic X on Hulu; which make me glad the company that forced the edits upon it (and openly admitted to knowing Jack about the franchise) is bankrupt. My favorite Sonic show is still SatAM for its dark tone and how it approached the characters. Too bad it didn't last too long; but I'm glad the comic is still running (even though it's had its ups and downs, much like the franchise itself).

    5. Yeah, that one hasn't aged well at all (the once state-of-the-art graphics of the games may be 90s, but the gameplay still makes DKC one of my favorite SNES games). Plus, the writing wasn't as good as its contemporaries in that time; like Reboot or Beast Wars (Dinobot's death in that show has the honor of being the first time a TV show made me cry).

    2. I didn't know it ended. I'm kinda sad P&F ended. I did enjoy it, at the beginning. Admittedly, the show declined in quality, but it was enjoyable. There were great moments and it was full of heart and even when the show started to get stale, it wasn't mean-spirited and hateful like shows tend to get when it lasts too long. For all of P&F's faults, I will miss it. It was a tiny ray of sunshine of heart when cartoon shows tried to be "cool" or "extreme".

      Delete
    3. New one on me. I was a bit late to the party on that one (watching it online); but I guess it had a good run. So, I guess I'll start binge-watching it on Netflix to see what I missed while I wait for new episodes of Gravity Falls and Star VS The Forces of Evil.

      Delete
    4. I remember watching P&F and liking it. Over time I grew tired because it was getting repetitive. Plus Gravity Falls came out so I put WAY more attention into that than P&F. At least it had a good run.

  6. What a way to lie to your fans, Chris about you hating TMNT II: Arcade 8 years ago and now you admit that you like it.

I wouldn't be so surprise if he brought up Turtles in Time the Arcade game and he admits by saying:

"I forgot to include this in my old review cause it was a screw up on my part, right after I got mountains of e-mails of my fans for saying that Turtles in Time was an arcade game first before being ported to consoles. Not to mention, Turtles in Time Re-Shelled is a remake of the original arcade game."

    3. On the comments page, Diederik jansen says:

"I thought you hated TMNT arcade port on the nes??!?"

      sfighter00 says:

"That was his character "The Irate Gamer" that said that, not the real Chris Bores who made this list. He wasn't in character."

      Diederik jansen:
      -....

Yeah but his character Irate Gamer is basically based on his own childhood experiences as a gamer... So I would expect that if IG says he hates something, the real Chris Bores hates it as well."

      Stephen Paget says:

"He has stated that he doesn't really hate all the games he plays as well."

So....does that mean...every game he reviewed in the past didn't suck...and that he likes them but only said that they suck while being in character mode?

That's like me saying, if I was a game reviewer, "Batman: Dark Tomorrow is a shitty game", when my fans know that I secretly like it because I was being my own character but in reality like the game. NEWSFLASH: Dark Tomorrow is still shittiest Batman game ever made. The only two things I like about the game are the music and cutscenes. Everything else is awful, including 89 attempts to pass the Hang gliding stage in the Himalayas without dying and the fact that fuel barrels only kill me but NOT the horrendous A.I. goons that stand right near it. In previous Batman games, like Batman: Vengeance, you can kill goons by pushing them off ledges or kicking them into fire without using handcuffs to keep them down. Dark Tomorrow only tells you to handcuff the goons and they'll be down forever.

    4. @ SHIELD. I know. It garnered the first of many "Shame of the Month" awards in EGM (a dubious "honor" reserved for each month's worst game). At least Rocksteady used that premise to make what are easily the best Batman games in the Arkham Series (Arkham Knight looks amazing). Even so, Bores doesn't seem to understand that it's wholly possible to just give a good-natured ribbing to something you like (ergo, a flawed, but enjoyable work in some way) or a straight up positive review. Somehow, I don't see attaching electrodes to a game and blowing it up as a method of showing you like it after all this time. Seeing as how it's one of my favorite NES games ever; the TMNT II review is the one that made me hate IG. It only went downhill from there.

  8. So, anyone else see Jurassic World last night? I personally thought it was a marked improvement over the previous sequels; and probably the best film in the series since the first one. I was wondering how Colin Trevorrow was going to transition to big-budget action fare (go watch Safety Not Guaranteed if you haven't already); but he easily washed away my disappointment with Jurassic Park III. Of course, Chris Pratt was great as the raptor trainer; and the characters I didn't like, as usual, got thankfully eaten or crushed by the dinosaurs. I'd definitely recommend it.

My first thoughts were "OK he said the game was terrible in his review in his 2007 review because it's not a direct emulated arcade port but he put it as number one?" Just, a What the serious hell? His earlier review of Ninja Turtles II just makes it further proof that he bought all his games off ebay to make money off of James Rolfe's idea.

  13. If putting Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game at such a high spot on the list truly is an attempt to cover up the hypocrisies and idiocies from his original review in 2007, then it really is too little, too late. He had a lot of time to say something about this matter in the last 8 years; why didn't he say anything?
As for E3 this year, I would say I'm looking forward to it but fact is, I'll be leaving early tomorrow morning to serve as a summer volunteer at a retreat center and thus won't be able to hear anything about the expo until September (a.k.a. LONG after people learned about news from it and stop caring about it). This means I'll have a LOT of catching up to do when I get back in the fall.

    4. It was pretty bad. Star Fox was cool (although some troubling previews are starting to hit), the new Zelda game was nice enough, and I'm looking forward to the new Mario & Luigi/Paper Mario crossover.

But otherwise, it sucked, and to me it was a pretty clear confirmation that the Wii U is dying fast. I'm not surprised but it still sucks.

And that new so called "Metroid Prime" game is a joke.

      Delete
    5. I wouldn't have minded the new Metroid game so much since perhaps the multiplayer aspect still has potential. However, my few issues are:

      1. Prime Hunters didn't fare well for me for FPS on a handheld. I remember getting cramps on my hands for the way I was trying to use the controls of that game. Thankfully the new game being on 3DS means we have the analog stick but I still imagine it to have awkward controls.

      2. This is the first Metroid game we're given in so long and this is all we get. Seems to be devoid of Samus, although I still see this as part of the franchise. I just wish they had made this further down the line after we've had a new major Metroid game whenever the hell that may be.

      Delete
    6. True, while it sucks it may not be a "proper" Metroid game; I think it should still be pretty fun. As for the Wii U: not a fat lady in sight yet. Granted, I don't have one yet; but I'm being given yet more reasons to pick one up compared to PS4 or XB1 (though the latter two are starting to make more arguments for me).

  21. Can someone explain why some people are so cynical about the FFVII remake. I mean sure some things will be screwed up because of the compilations and to some it won't be as good as they remember but come on it's VII one of the best in the series. And before some says anything I'm not using nostalgic googles I never actually beat VII till last year(I've played before just never finished it) so the game is fresh in my mind. But again it's not like they can destroyed the game or anything it's just somethings will be a little screwy(the crossdreassing part is something I don't think will work right in the remake), so again why are some people so cynical?

Also now people are being stupid about the VII remake because it was announced things would be different, if your someone complaining about remakes changing things than don't go crazy about getting remakes. I really don't even know why people are so upset on one hand remakes for games have proven they can be better than the original like Metroid Zero Mission or the Resident Evil remake, and really as much as I love VII and think it's a amazing game there are some things that should be changed and or removed which I hope are done in this remake.

  22. I know people are excited about the Final Fantasy VII remake, Doom and The Last Guardian right now.

But what's even more exciting? Shenmue 3 is going to have a Kickstarter campaign!

    1. Also, Star Wars Battlefront looks absolutely gorgeous.

But note to EA, don't make this another Battlefield Hardline or The Order 1886.

    2. Even though I've never played either Shemmue games I though the reveal of 3 was the most surprising at this E3, really who saw that coming

    3. That Kickstarter set a new record, it seems. I definitely want the new Battlefront to be more than just Battlefield with Star Wars on top of it. The Last Guardian does look amazing for all the work Team Ico has done on it.

    4. Judging by the thing at the top of eastarwars.com, I don't think the new Battlefront is going to be any good.

    5. @Rosello
Actually, that's a hater website. The official Battlefront website is starwars.ea.com.

    6. No, I know it's not the official website. My point is that the table at the top is accurate.

  23. It's now past midnight on the East Coast, and Bores hasn't posted anything for Tuesday.

    1. Onto Friday then. Given last year, my expectations for his E3 coverage are even lower than past years.

    2. While we wait, this segment from E3 2013 is perhaps the Boresiest thing ever:

    3. That view count and subscriber count after all this time is just sad. Even if the Treehouse event is not what many of us were expecting, at least the livestream got more views than than that.

    4. I added a comment on my own on there. Seeing how few comments exist on the video, it will surely stand out.

  24. ...And the first E3 video is here. Surprise, it's about Amiibo.

    1. Worse. It's about Amiibo AND Skylanders.

    2. And he's not at E3.

But this video was late anyway.

      Even after the trimmed-back schedule.

    3. Everything that was announced in the last few days and he starts with Amiibos...sure why not.

    4. And of fucking course that douche bag has Greninja.

    5. Also JRizzle, Bores has clearly shown over the years that he cares more about toys much more than he does games (which is none). You're surprised he brought up the Skylanders/Amiibos?

      Delete
    6. well actually I was trying to be funny though I do think it's sad how far down hill his E3 videos have gotten, say what you well about his earlier E3 videos but he at least tried to cover everything

  25. So, who else isn't looking forward to Yo-Kai Watch coming stateside? Personally, I can't stand the anime; and that's dragging down a lot of potential enjoyment of the game. If it outsells Ni No Kuni, Level-5's amazing game with many of the same themes; I will be very sorry for the state of the industry. I encourage everyone to go play Ni No Kuni instead, it's a better game that's already out here. #YoKaiWatch

    1. I don't have a XboxOne or PS4 so I didn't really care too much about everything announced for them(outside of Fallout 4,RareReplay,and FFVII remake) not saying it wasn't good stuff it's just when you lack the proper system it's hard getting too excited(for me anyway). And while it wasn't Nintendo's best year I was still please with what they had to offered. So I say good year mostly for Microsoft and Sony fans and okay year for Nintendo fans(though 2016 should be better).

    2. I saw gameplay of Halo 5, Doom, and XCOM 2, so I'm fairly satisfied.

    4. People are saying everyone sucked this year but I found Sony's to be enjoyable. I mean, c'mon, FF7 is enough hype for the whole thing, and along with that we even got The Last Guardian and Shenmue 3. Amazing.

I also enjoyed the KH3 gameplay we saw and the new Star Ocean looks really good.

Nintendo was disappointing, but I can't wait for Mario and Luigi Paper Jam, it looks great.

    5. I hate to say it, but it made me want to get a PS4.

    6. Not sure. No time to play video games anymore, let alone go to a major convention across the country related to them.

      Delete
    7. I know I might get some flack for this, but I don't think Nintendo actually did that bad. Yeah, they should've reveled more stuff and focused less on pre-reveled games, but the only game that truly disappointed me was Metroid. The others ranged from meh to looking really great.

      Delete
    8. Yeah, that is true. It actually surprised me though that Jim Sterling thought that Nintendo won E3. However, when I heard from him that it was because Nintendo had the greatest emphasis on fun, I remembered why they are one of the few companies that do not majorly contribute to the death of the gaming industry. At least the Wii U games we will get all look great. And hey, it finally convinced me to buy a 3DS. Though, I probably won't buy Smash on it, as I already have the Wii U version and I would hate to have to rebuy the DLC.

    9. Definitely a lot more exciting than last year. 2014 was a disappointing year for video games. Thankfully E3 2015 revealed a lot of good anticipated games like the FF7 remake, Kingdom Hearts 3, The Last Guardian, SHENMUE 3, Star Wars Battlefront, Doom and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. All these reveals gave me hope that there are better video games to come in the future.

    10. The problem is E3 isn't the time to announce your "meh" games. The only game Nintendo announced that was a hit was Star Fox, and that was at the very beginning.

      Delete
    11. Actually, most of the games they announced looked pretty good. The only bad games Nintendo announced were Sonic Boom 3 and Metroid Federation Force, and the only meh game was amiibo festivel, which has been sort of growing on me.

  27. I saw his Amiibo news video. Who else thinks that his reason of not going to E3 is bullshit? It sounds like GotGame finally got tired of him and his shitty E3 coverage over the past years and decided not to send him to E3 anymore.

    1. I'm not surprised that's the real reason. Gotgame got fed up that Bores only talks about Skylanders and not or barely talk about other games that gamers care and know about like Alien: Isolation, The Evil Within, Bioshock Infinite, Dishonored and The Last of Us.

      Delete
    2. The main problem, besides making relatively few (actual) videos and sucking ass in each of those videos, is that Chris now only reviews/talks about Nintendo games and accessories, with a majority of it being about old games that everyone knows about by now/doesn't really care about too much (like the Skylanders and Amiibos). And seeing as how Bores probably expects GotGame to buy him a PS4 required to play the games that you just mentioned, then there is definitely no reason to keep him on a modern gaming website if he has no news to report.
